Buzz: Mets Consider Heilman to N’Ola
By Matthew Cerrone - May 26, 2008 8:54 am

According to the Daily News, the Mets are discussing whether to demote Aaron Heilman to Triple-A, while replacing him with Carlos Muniz.

ah, yes, the old Steve Trachsel treatmentfrankly, these days, if i were aaron, i’d welcome a week or two away from the Mets, and all that is going on with them right now, while also getting to spend some time in New Orleans…life could certainly be worse

Last week, also in the Daily News, Rubin reported that the Mets have been shopping Heilman for a set-up man.

I think that would be a good decision. I don’t think I can take anymore leads disappearing because of this man.

  2. mavicario says:

Stretch him out and make him a starter? Then trade him?

    • the Straw says:

So he still HAS options. What are they waiting for?!?!?

    • shinjosplints17 says:

i thought it took a long time to change a bullpen guy to a starter but the Joba experiment is opening my eyes, Let him do some long relief down there then give him a start or two in NOLA see what happens can’t be worse than whats going on up here.

  3. Some of us have been advocating this for weeks. Finally. Just do something.

They would be smart to give him the chance to start down there. At the very least, if it doesn’t work, then he will be more satisfied in the pen, knowing that he can’t hack it as a starter anymore but that he got the opportunity to try. But just give him the chance, godammit! They’ve got nothing to lose at this point. They should have done it a year ago.

  4. the Straw says:

They dont need to make him a starter unless they are looking to trade him as such…do we really need another 5th starter?

Pedro is coming back eventually, and then either Vargas or Pelfrey will have to be sent down. Hopefully Pelfrey.

Send him down so he can get his confidence back as a set-up man.

  5. K-Hern says:

Who wouldn’t want to get away from this trainwreck

  6. Dirtysanchez says:

    F-I-N-A-L-L-Y!!!!

  7. JerryKoosman says:

It’s been reported elsewhere that Julian Tavarez wants to pitch for “Los Mets.” Well, Omar, he fits the profile. Sign him up.

I also think part of the problem with the Mets is what I saw above in a comment “Pedro is coming back eventually.” That rhymes with “El Duque is coming back eventually” and “Alou is coming back eventually.”

That kind of thinking from this team, says “hey, let’s stay afloat until everyone is back.”

    Loser mentality.

    “You’ll see…when the GlenGarry leads come in…you’ll see…”

    • sherlockcollector says:

Why do the Mets always think other teams are stupid when they demote, release or otherwise let go of their players. The Mets are either lazy or vain in thinking they can salvage or turn around a player discarded by another team. petersen can always ‘fix’ the problem in 15 minutes. How about doing some work and looking at younger players with potential instead of guys on the downside of their careers. Sorry but I think Pedro is done too.

    • the Straw says:

Im meerly stating that we do not need another back end of the rotation starter. Heilman needs to sharpen his game and come back as a reliever. Pedro or no pedro, heilman probably would not be an upgrade from Pelfrey or Vargas.

    • andyglass1 says:

dont forget carlos d will come around and the $26.0m man will come back to 35-40 sb’s, 100 runs, 180 IF hits while filling the two spot just perfectly !!!

  8. metinDC23 says:

IF they think they can they should trade him for an average first baseman.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Or a RH hitting LF with a history of relative health, unless Nick “the Stick” Evans is the answer there.

  9. metsfansberealistic says:

been saying this for at least a month

  10. krumbledkookie says:

This can only benefit Heilman. And who knows? Maybe we find lightning in a bottle with Muniz.

  11. metsfansberealistic says:

but will they too stubborn not to start him in NOLA?

frankly, giving Aaron the chance to start will be a burden off him and the whole team and if he pitches well (he has been starting in winter ball along) he could start for us after the next few inevitable injuries

  12. Need to trade half the team!!

    • Gina says:

They don’t need to trade half the team, but they need to be discussing more changes than just this. Not unnecessarily trading or demoting/promoting players but things like the batting order and coaches and what not.

  13. EliPorter says:

matt holliday torches us this weekend and then goes on the DL … just before the rockies series with the phillies!!!

  14. krumbledkookie says:

“Derrick Turnbow has “suffered a near-total command meltdown” in Nashville. In 6 outings, he has pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, seven earned runs, and a jaw-dropping 15 walks!”

    - from mlb trade rumors.com

Anyone else glad we didn’t take a chance on this guy?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I was torn a new one on that site for saying that the Mets shouldn’t touch him when he was available, so count me in the glad category, and perhaps the last laugh category as well.

  15. Gina says:

This is unrelated but in discussing changes, does anyone else think that when Church comes back he should be moved to the 4 spot and Beltran to the 2 spot, since Beltran isn’t hitting for power at all anymore but still gets on base. Or even Church to the 3 spot, since he’s been our best hitter this year, Wright to the 4 spot and Beltran to 2.

    • metsfansberealistic says:

      Reyes
      Beltran
      Church
      Carp
      Wright
      Evans
      Murphy
      Schneider
      P

      • GravediggerHebner says:

help me out. Who’s playing 2B?

        • metsfansberealistic says:

Wright – on the job training

would be the least of our problems

we need youth – this lineup would do the trick

        • metsfansberealistic says:

          and to the below

          I AM being realistic

we are f***ed without significant change & youth

this team is lethargy to the nth degree

that needs to be changed and now

      • krumbledkookie says:

Considering your name is “mets fans be realistic,” shouldn’t you know better than this?

  16. bobkooler says:

    Totally unrelated…

But with his totally boneheaded, headscratching play of late, can we now see why Willie Randolph got on Reyes last year? He saw his lack of focus a mile away and now Reyes can’t get out of his own way. Getting picked off, lazy errors, swinging at first pitches and killing rallies, popping up with guys on, not moving runners, not developing into a leader AT ALL.

  17. cver says:

GEE, Let’s not do anything RASH! I begged for this 2 or 3 weeks ago!!! Why does Omar drag his feet on the obvious. The other component which is vital for Heilman is the best sports psychologist in the business, whereever this person is. Bring them down to the Big Easy for a month and let’s see what Muniz can do in the meantime.

  18. metphan says:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Delgado
    Church
    Evans
    Schneider
    Castillo

    Discuss…

    • krumbledkookie says:

You want to hit Delgado cleanup? Are you insane?

      • metphan says:

Unfortunately you gotta play with the hand you’re dealt…. he’s hitting with much more power lately than Beltran….

        • JerryKoosman says:

Sorry for the double post, this ought to be here. Delgado NOT hitting has led to many of the offensive problems. Beltran has had no protection in the lineup, so pitchers can face him without any issues.

Delgado has become Todd Hundley without the booze and funny stories. He’s nearly an automatic out. After Reyes, Church (who’s on his way to a very good year, but will cool off somewhat) and Wright, and an unprotected Beltran, what else is there besides old Expo players in this lineup?

  19. wright worshiper says:

    Another problem with Willie here:

THough Heilman does struggle continuously, Willie needs to see that he is struggling and take him out before any of the damage is done. It’s like willie is afraid to step on the field and call timeout. Willie needs to step up and take out pitchers at the right time instead of sending out Peterson to go out and put his hand on the pitchers shoulder.

    Am I wrong?

  20. sincekindergarten says:

If Heilman is going to be stretched out in N’awlins, and he starts to throw his slider more, I’m all for it.

  21. JerryKoosman says:

    • wright worshiper says:

that’s so right. There is no backing up in the order. The lineup is not solid like it used to be. Castillo is also a big deal because him and Reyes used to be the 1-2 punch and now Church has mostly taken that spot and he is more of a power hitter, not bunts and steals. Good Point.

  22. AlreadyMissShea says:

Since they really aren’t in a position right now to have another meeting that results in the discovery that things need to be turned around, not without doing something anyway…

My guess is Heilman will take the hit when the meeting is over and be sent down today.

Can’t say he didn’t earn it. And the fans aren’t going to rebel over that decision either if it does work out that way.

  23. WrightPower says:

    Reyes
    Wright
    Beltran
    Church
    Delgado
    Evans
    Schneider
    Castillo

If Evans looks good swap him with Delgado eventually…

    Discuss…

    • metphan says:

I just think Beltran should be moved to the 2 spot because he’s not hitting for any power and that’s where he’s traditionally had success. Maybe with better hitters behind him he’ll get more pitches.

Could go Reyes, Beltran, Church, Wright, Delgado….

  24. therealsandman says:

anyone hear about juliun taveras wanting to pitch for the mets?

    • wright worshiper says:

      yeah
      so

      • therealsandman says:

i think its funny how people want to play for the mets after what is going on now

    • JerryKoosman says:

He wants to play for “Los Mets”

      • wright worshiper says:

ha. but you have to admit these people of other ethnicities have some amazing los basebal skills! It’s incredible for how much talent they develop. But still, there are many players in the U.S. that can sometimes triple their skill.

  25. evans
    reyes
    beltran
    wright
    church
    delgado
    castillo
    schneider
    pitchers spot

need to try somone else leading off. take some preasure off reyes.everone has protectionuntill the bottom of the order.
i think right now anything is better than what we are doing!

  26. metsfan1 says:

He has options? He has been on the team for 3 years. If that is the case do it. The sad thing is that 2 years ago, many teams wanted him as a starter and we could have traded him for some really talented players. Now we are looking to send him to the minors to see if he can get his career on track. We probably couldn’t get more than a prospect for him now.

  27. DMAT89 says:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Church
    Evans
    Delgado
    Schneider
    Castillo
    Pitcher

    • JerryKoosman says:

      I’d rather see:

      CASTILLO
      Reyes
      Beltran
      Wright
      Delgado
      Church
      Schneider/Castro
      LF (the kid, for now)
57 pitchers bat here (according to Mr. MicroManager Willie, who manages every game like it’s game 7).

Castillo will get on base. Check his stats, they are not awful. It’s his defense that’s atrocious. Reyes is not suited for leading off, he’s more of a slap hitter and wants to go for the dinger more than he should. He’s a good #2 hitter, great speed. Church needs to hit behind DelCrappo in the lineup to protect and give him pitches to hit.

Waive Alou and let the kid figure it out in LF, put him in the 8th slot till he relaxes. or get J Bay or someone else (I know, I know, in a trade for what? We’ve got nothing to offer in return).

      • JerryKoosman says:

I think Jose Reyes will also relax if taken out of the leadoff slot. But Willie and Omar don’t listen to me. After all, who the heck am I? I’m just a lefthander from Minnesota.

      • wright worshiper says:

Castillo can’t handle the lead off spot like Reyes. He isn’t half prepared. He isn’t a leadoff hitter. He is fine vbatting eighth or second

        • JerryKoosman says:

I disagree. He led off for Florida and Minnesota and has a career BA of .293. His numbers are a bit better than Reyes, but not by much.

I think most people are expecting WAY too much from Reyes.

  28. scottmetsfan says:

did you hear that geremi gonzalez, who pitched for us along side jose lima in 2006 was killed by lightning in venezuela? only 33 years old. how sad.

  29. OrangEandBlue says:

Mets line up should really be

    SS Reyes
    CF Beltran
    3B Wright
    RF Church
    LF Easley
    1B Evans
    2B Castillo
    C Schneider

    • WrightPower says:

      thats pretty good

    • crazyfan22 says:

Why does everyone have so much faith in Evans when he only played 2 games, one of which he went 0 for 4? Easley is horrible, i wouldn’t trust him in the starting lineup. For those of you wo dont know, Delgado has a higher BA than Beltran and is on a hitting streak. We need to trade Castillo for someone better and younger.
      A better order:

      Beltran

      Reyes

      Church

      Wright

      Delgado

for now Evans… Angel Pagan when he gets back

      Schnieder

      Castillo

      (Pitcher)

  30. therealsandman says:

taveras just signed with the brewers, no los mets

  31. metphan says:

The Post is reporting that the meeting is scheduled for 2 pm.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

We should make our predictions here.

I’ll predict that the Wilpons will formally accept Willie’s apology, but tell him they are going to be keeping an eye on things (again). And Heilman will get sent down.

  32. Joe D says:

    Do it already!

  33. Ryan Synagogue says:

Pfft. Screw the meeting. Lets focus on what’s really important: Schneiders Toyota of Manhattan commercial

  34. GregB says:

There are no comments on the manager poll, so i’ll post here.

It looks like Bobby Valentine is the overwhelming choice. I know he won his first few years with the Mets, but his last two were nothing to write home about. Doesn’t anybody remember this guy? His post game interviews make Willie seem personable and forthcoming. Bobby could be nasty, sarcastic and a total ass. I know he’s not coming back from Japan, at least not during the season, but please be careful what you wish for. The manager is not the real problem with the Mets. He’s just another symtom of a disfunctional team.

  35. mrmet1969 says:

Maybe some time away to get mentally and physically right as they did with Tracshel will help. I still think Aaron can help and let’s not forget the great work for the end of ‘06-’07 and it was the end of last year and the start of this year that something is wrong. I say give him a chance to work it out and I believe he will regain his spot in bullpen.

  36. metsfanmurph says:

Does anyone else notice that hitters from other teams fight off alot of tough pitches and have lengthy at bats? On the other hand if a Mets hitter falls behind in the count they usually make a weak out or K.

    • GregB says:

Oh, I’ve noticed…i’ve also noticed that other teams, the good ones anyway, don’t get picked off base every other day, can hit behind a runner, don’t throw 30 pitches in the first inning, can score a runner from third base with less than 2 out, can go from first to third on a single to right, don’t walk the first batter in the innning, hustle out of the box and turn singles into doubles, hit the cutoff man with regularity, can come in from the bullpen and strand a runner, can pitch a complete game, don’t require a IV drip of Geritol to stay off the DL for more than a week at a time, and are even able to string together more than two wins in a row!

      So, yes, I’ve noticed.

  37. Master Neo says:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Church
Wright (he’s in a slump and batting 280 not 240)
    Delgado
    Evans
    Castillo
    Schneider
    P

Tell me what is wrong with this for right now
