News: Willie Randolph is Manager of the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - May 26, 2008 4:36 pm

During a press conference at Shea Stadium this afternoon, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters, “Willie Randolph is our manager.  There is no limbo.  He’s the manager…and I hope he is our manager for many years to come.”

According to Minaya, the goal of today’s meeting was to a) discuss Randolph’s public comments from last week, and b) talk about the current state of the team and what they need to do to get better.

“We had a good, productive meeting,” said Minaya, who noted they all share ideas on how best to make the team better, adding, “Two things, ownership is very disappointed in how the team is playing…They wanted to talk to Willie about those things…Also, about the comments, once we get beyond today, like today is over, those comments are over, and they felt it was important to talk to Willie about it, they’ve accepted his apology and we move on from there.  It’s over.  Let’s go on.  It’s over.  Let’s move forward now.”

Minaya said Randolph has his support, the support of ownership, who did not need to be convinced of keeping him, adding, “Willie’s job was never in danger heading in to this meeting,” which was more about a) last week’s comments, and b) finding a way to play better baseball.

Randolph told reporters that the meeting was productive, adding, “Any time we talk as a group, it’s always about how we can get better, how Fred and Jeff can help to make us better in some way, and how I can help make the players get it done on the field.”

According to Randolph, the Wilpons wanted to talk face-to-face with him about his comments from last week, and, “It was fine,” adding, “The Wilpons are very supportive of me.”

Randolph, having sat at the table for 20 minutes or so, and looking a bit testy and impatient, announced, “Yeah, I’ve got a ball game to manage tonight, so if you guys are done, you know, maybe we can get to baseball…I’ve got to get on the field, man…Like I said, we’ve got a game in a couple of hours, and I’d rather be out there doing that.  So, let’s do it.  Let’s win a game,” at which point he got up, after being dismissed by the team’s spokesman, and left for the field.

…honestly, randolph looks exhausted…he had a look on his face, as if to say, ‘I just want to win,’ enough with this drama…and i totally agree…

…also, from looking at how willie and omar talked, in some cases almost finishing one another’s sentences, it is clear these two are now tied at the hip…from what i understand, this was sort of the case after omar convinced ownership to keep willie last fall, and it looks to be very much the case now…again, that’s just a hunch having watched the press conference with my own two eyes, but i believe i am correct…

…so, there you have it…willie stays…omar stays…and they’re clearly being given time, together, to get the ship moving in the right direction…which is fair, considering there is still 70 percent of the season yet to be played…

…in other news, why did ESPN News cover the most dramatic day of the year, live, while SNY was showing Beer Money…again…

Hope it includes his resignation after tonight’s game.

  2. Don’t hold your breath.

    • ness589 says:

The last thing I’d expect from the Wilpons is to do something progressive.

      • kendychavez says:

Whether this is how you meant it or not, I think this is the main point. I don’t care if Willie stays or goes unless it’s a reflection of a major organizational change. Omar and his people have to go and all new people have to be brought it. The whole philosophy has to change; the entire organization is way too old-fashioned to compete nowadays. If it weren’t for the Wilpons’ money we’d be abysmal.

    • dykstraw says:

i really don’t see how this is pointing to anything but a change in the manager’s office. unless you know something we don’t.

      • dykstraw says:

(unless pre-game press conferences are routine and happen every day. i wouldn’t know. got the impression this was something unusual.)

        • JerryKoosman says:

Almost makes me want to root for the Yankees.

          Same old Mets.

Get in line NOW you SAPS (errr, I mean, loyal fans) to see them next year at Schiti Field.

          I feel so used. F U Fred

        • leonwestbrook says:

To Jerry: Go head on root for the Yankees. You are probally a bandwagon fan anyway.

If you haven’t experienced losing, you aren’t a true mets fan.

        • JerryKoosman says:

          Hey Leon,

I sat in field box section 204 B and had seats 1 & 2 from 1971 through 1989. Go look where they are.

          I’ve been there PAL.

  3. dominicanboy08 says:

so, at what time is the press conference?

  4. dykstraw says:

don’t see why we need yet another press conference if this guy is keeping his job

although i guess he hasn’t reminded me how he’s such a winner in like 3-4 days

  5. EliPorter says:

what the hekc is going on?

  6. heart of the city says:

i cant wait to see this .. willie will obviously be monet as usual about everything … only time i think willie wouldnt be vague about anything is when he gets fired ..

he probably will get real blunt about how he was fired cause he is “BLACK ” ..not because he is unable to coach a talented baseball team

  7. adam11216 says:

it’s live on WFAN right now.

  8. adam11216 says:

“willie’s job was never in danger going into this meeting.”
    - minaya

  9. Maineiac says:

What’s happening? I need to know!

  10. Horseman says:

I have never been the biggest fan of Willie, but, either fire him now or give him the whole season. If the Wilpons are going to keep him the whole season, then tell the press. This is getting old fast and I think it is affecting how the players are performing.

  11. adam11216 says:

    same old, same old.

“you know, we’ve gotta start playing better. ”
    - willie

    • Maineiac says:

Thank You Captain Obvious. What’s next… he’ll discover humans breathe air, and that the Earth is round?

  12. metsreyes7 says:

Boo, same old stuff from Willie. We’re always trying to figure out a way to improve the team. Bring on Bobby V.

  13. dykstraw says:

what a bunch of horsecrap from omar

here’s your headline guys: METS MGMT TO FANS: **** YOU!

  14. FIRE Willie says:

Wilpons didn’t say that Willie has the season. So I guess Willie Watch 08 continues.

    • gomets019 says:

I’m listening right now and Omar is very emphatic that there is no Willie watch, he’s the manager, period. He said Willies job was never in danger, and won’t be in the near future. I’m starting to realize it is the Wilpons that set the tone and this team will be more bad than good for a very long time.

  15. FIRE Willie says:

“I didn’t come into the meeting thinking I was going to get fired.” – Willie “Lucky SOB” Randolph… what arrogance, this guy is either arrogant or oblivious

  16. outsiderz says:

Why are people surprised he’s staying (at least for the next couple of days)? If Willie were to be canned mid-season and before the ASB, surely the press conference would have been earlier in the day.

  17. ccmetfan says:

nothing’s happening. Minaya just said they talked about the state of the team and how they can help it. Willie is the manager now and hopefully for many years. Very broad. Randolph is saying they have to player better, get on track, and do the fundamentals

    • sherlockcollector says:

Did anyone ask Minaya WHAT they plan to do to help this team. These guys all sound like political candidates, stating the obvious and never offering anything concrete.
Look all teams and players go into slumps but this is almost a season long. I thought the understanding was that Willie and to a lesser extent Omar [why I don't know] were given one more chance and that if the season didn’t start off right one or both were to be gone. Big s**t because Wilpon played baseball and knows Koufax he thinks he knows baseball. Hey maybe Sandy should be the pitching coach?? Or maybe they should at least listen to Keith & Ron whose analyses always make alot of sense.

  18. therealsandman says:

mets get swept by the marlins, willie better be gone

  19. soulsea says:

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Their words are hurting my prostate!

  20. FIRE Willie says:

    Same garbage different day.

  21. khmustache says:

    news conference recap:

maintain the status quo…the champagne will be that much sweeter

  22. UncleMuscles says:

HAHAHAHAH you people are ridiculous – Willie was never going anywhere he is here to stay and you should deal with it already. Move on.

  23. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

    Sickening.

  24. FIRE Willie says:

Glad ownership is more concerned over Willie’s stupid comments than how the team is playing. Thank goodness that they were able to meet to discuss his stupid comments.

  25. adam11216 says:

“you go to atlanta, you lose come games…”
    - minaya

really? that’s how you’d sum up that disgusting, soul-crushing display?

  26. dykstraw says:

i can’t listen anymore, and i don’t think i can watch either. good luck guys. hope you all have enough going on in your lives that baseball can take a back seat. because it’s not gonna get any better.

  27. The good news: The extreme Willie bashers who spam this site have lost this battle.

The bad news: They will continue spamming this site.

    • dykstraw says:

because beating willie bashers is more important than beating the atlanta braves.

    • FIRE Willie says:

We “Willie Bashers” wouldn’t bash Willie if he didn’t give us something on a nightly basis to “bash” him about. It’s nothing personal against Willie, it’s just that he’s a terrible manager.

      • I understand the way you feel. It’s just that some of us have a big difference of opinion.

        • Don Logan says:

yes, with no argument to back up your position. Your position is basically, willie shouldn’t be fired. but you never give a reason or well written argument behind it.
willie should be fired for pitching to holliday friday night w/ 1b open. Who cares about his comments last week. the guy can’t manage his way out of a paper bag during a game.

        • You are absolutely wrong.

I have given my position in minute detail on numerous occasions and those who have had back-and-forths with me can attest to that.

        • Don Logan says:

Well I’ve read your inane comments all weekend long and the best you can come up w/ so far is Willie should stay and all the other managerial choices are “terrible.”

        • I haven’t posted any comments detailing my views at all this weekend. I’ve done so quite often in the past.

        • Don Logan says:

What’s the matter, run out of defenses for Willie? So you’d rather just try to irritate people on here?

        • I suggest you go back to some of the past Willie threads and look up my posts if you want to know what I think in detail.

I want to irritate some people in this thread just as much as you want to irritate me.

        • Don Logan says:

You’re too important to add a sentence or two to your posts to justify your opinions? I wouldn’t waste my time looking for your old posts. Nobody cares about your old posts. In the future, justify your opinions or nobody will give any validity to your stupid comments.

        • Bug off. There are other posters even on the Bash Willie side who know very well of my detailed opinions. If you want to know what they are, then you do the research. It’s there. I’m not going to do it for you because you’re not worth it. If you had asked nicely instead of being such an arrogant SOB I might have actually gone back and looked for you. I’ve written a book worth’s of words already on the topic.

If you don’t want to know them then just shut up. I don’t have to justify anything to you, nor do you deserve it. And I don’t care if you never read another post of mine. In fact I’d prefer it if you just skipped over them in the future.

        • And I assume you are one of the Willie bashers because sound do bitter over the news. So, to quote another poster below:

NA NA NA NA NA NA NA Hey Hey Hey

        • And I assume you are one of the Willie bashers because you sound so bitter over the news.

  28. metfanb says:

Apparently Willie is focused on winning and is determined to win. (BS!!!!!)

  29. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

Minaya takes no responsibility for the old decrepit roster he assembled. Everything is “Willie this” “Willie’s comments”, etc.

  30. ccmetfan says:

Hopefully Mets start playing better. If not, at least I got other teams to root for in soccer who r in playoffs. It’s good to be a fan of many sports.

  31. adam11216 says:

i’m not so upset that randolph wasn’t immediately fired. i’m more upset at the tone of the press conference. omar and willie seem to be taking the tone “it’s a bad stretch, no big deal.” where’s the “we’re really ticked off about what’s going on and we’re going to turn it around.”

    • NYMBosco says:

Why aren’t the wilpons giving this conference? No ball$

    • soulsea says:

Didn’t we agree last night that we were gonna manage this team, you know “the three queens”

  32. metsreyes7 says:

His shiny head is irritating me.

  33. MarcRabbi says:

Is there a reason SNY isnt showing this press conference? Is Beer Money really that much more important than this press conference?

So much for being the home of new york sports..

Get your new york sports here ( and some beer money when we have press conferences on our terrible team )

  34. FIRE Willie says:

WHAT NERVE… WILLIE JUST SAID “I’VE KINDA GOT A BASEBALL GAME TO MANAGE TONIGHT AND CAN YOU GUYS GET TO BASEBALL…”

  35. 1994 says:

If this is true that nothing is going to happen than both Omar and Willie have to go and the Wilpons should sell the team.. It’s to bad Mr. Doubleday didn’t buy the Wilpons out instead of the other way around.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

I don’t know why Wilpon didn’t buy the Dodgers. They were for sale a few years ago.

  36. khmustache says:

wow willie’s getting angry…almost…kay not really

  37. UncleMuscles says:

HAHAHAHAHA! you people are ridiculous – Willie was never going anywhere he is here to stay and you should deal with it already. Move on.

    • gipper82475 says:

And this sorry state of affairs makes you happy? Why? 4th place, 5.5 out, following biggest collapse in history of the game? You are content with that?

  38. recoton1 says:

I can’t wait to get my playoff tickets bill in the mail after the ASB when the team is 14 games out. I will literally take a sh!t in it and send it back with the revocation of my season tickets. F this team. Willie should have been fired last year and they keep hoping against hope that he can “right the ship”. It’s been a full season of sub .500 ball from the highest salaried team in the NL on the heels of the wort collapse in MLB history.. yes, obviously a few mores weeks of the status quo is what’s needed.

  39. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

Amateur hour! Minaya with the “um, um ym” and Willie with the “Hey guys, I have a game to manage to manage, can we talk baseball”?

    • NegativeFan says:

“Can we talk baseball, I have a game to manage”

F**king creep…..maybe next time you won’t be so fast to call the fans racist ifyou really want to focus on baseball

  40. FIRE Willie says:

That was bizarre… Willie just left and left Omar to answer questions.

  41. tony says:

Nice coverage by SNY, Beer money hoooray!!

  42. Lets_Go_Mets says:

The only thing Mets fans can do now is turn Shea (and Citi Field) into a ghost town. Empty seats is the only thing the Wilpons respond to.

  43. soulsea says:

Omar, stop saying “you know” you f… No, we don’t know.

  44. adam11216 says:

apparently they’re “trying too hard,” according to minaya. that’s the problem, and the reporters are idiots for not noticing that.

  45. therealsandman says:

    willie is getting pissed

  46. DMAT89 says:

    where is everyone watching this?

  47. therealsandman says:

“i think the players respond to willie”

    um i dont think so

  48. Alban says:

It’s a good thing that Willie didn’t produce a rap album, cause he would probably have been traded to the Nationals after the comments about racism last week.

  49. Mookie 1986 says:

Hold on, you mean Beer Money is on… and I didn’t know?!?

::practically breaks neck scrambling for remote control::

    • therealsandman says:

hey beer money is more important than a mets press conference regarding the team’s future

      • NYMBosco says:

Just like last year after the collapse when sny had street games on instead of live post game coverage

      • crazyfan22 says:

apparently… the wilpons sold broadcasting rights of the press conference to ESPN to make money. The mets, while horrible as a team right now, are still a profitable company. all the games are sell-outs in Shea stadium this year, Mets hats and t-shirts still sell good, etc. The only things they will respond to is fans deserting them and not giving them enough money to pay Santana, etc. ’s salary! until that happens, willie is here to stay.

  50. therealsandman says:

i think i knew what omar and willie were going to say an hr before this press conference

  51. WrightPower says:

You whiners should all put on yankees hats cause you sound just like yankees “fans”. PLEASE! get the f*#$ out and boo another team. LETS GO METS! Lets play willie ball!!!

  52. therealsandman says:

yay the unnecessary press conference is over

  53. FIRE Willie says:

Omar the philosopher… “When your team is winning the passion looks good … when you’re losing you’ve got bad passion.”

    • almar1965 says:

I think Omar is the new latin version of Yogi Berra, but without the likability or championship pedigree.

  54. soulsea says:

“When you loose you’ve got bad passion”
    Omar “you know” Minaya

    Outstanding!

  55. NY Cuban says:

This organization is joke!!! I’m done. I’ll see you guys when he is gone. Call me fair weather, call me a bad fan. But I’m done with these Mets!

    • FIRE Willie says:

      Agreed.

      • DrJohn says:

Why not make a change. Willie has been unable to win since a year ago June. Half the team has completely turned him off. Fire Willie and Omar.

This is what mets stands for right now.

        My
        Entire
        Team
        Sucks

Sad but true. Man up Wilpons.

    • NYMBosco says:

What an embarrassment to the organization. I hope the fans boo them out of the stadium tonight!!!

    • beltran the warrior says:

don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

    • keith is a leader says:

what do we all think of that guy who got fired from the reds being the gm tomorrow?

-I hate willie just as much as the next guy but..

willie didn’t trade jacobs for delgado

      Willie didnt sign pedro

      Willie did not trade Bannister

      Thoughts…

      • NYMBosco says:

Omar should not be in a position to control this press conference…..He should have been thrown out with willie today…………

    • Church says:

Cuban, thats not being a bad fan. I haven’t watched a game in 2 weeks. I check here everyday for news, but why do I wanna watch something that sucks to watch? I still want them to win, but I’m not gonna sit through 3 hours of crappy play to consider myself “a good fan.” I’ll watch once it gets entertaining again.

    • Can this be true? No more spamming by NY Cuban? If for no other reason, the Mets need to keep Willie now!

Buh bye. Keep that promise now.

  56. almar1965 says:

Guys, you do realize that all the “feel good” BS spewed by Omar and Willie today means absolutely nothing. It is called by it’s proper name of “Damage Control”. I guarantee you if the Mets are several games behind first in the bottom of the division come the All-Star game, playing with the same malaise that they have had the past 162 games, I can guarantee you that the Wilpons will fire Willie out of necessity. What do you think the Wilpons told Willie today? I am pretty sure they made it clear to him that the situation needs to improve quickly or else. Don’t fall for Omar’s double-speak.

    • soulsea says:

      So I shouldn’t be placated?

      • almar1965 says:

You can be placated all you want. What I am saying is to not read too much into what Omar says, because the situation on the field will quickly dictate what happens if things do not change in a month.

    • gipper82475 says:

That would be doubly too late. It’s too late already once they didn;t can his sorry derriere on October 1.

This is getting reminiscent of the bad old days. Why must being a Mets fan mean enduring such inanity?

Should be a FUN crowd tonight at Shea. Leave the kiddies at home.

    • Jimmets says:

If they get swept by the Marlins and are 8.5 games out of first, Willie better be gone or else Shea will become a ghost town in its last year. Omar saying that the reason for the meeting was a result of Willie’s comments…what about the boring way they play the game? If I were the owners, I’d want to know how a team with a payroll of $20M is 5.5 games ahead of my $140M payroll team. The Wilpons should have bit the bullet…fire Willie, hire Backman, release Delgado, and let Omar know that it this doesn’t turn around, he’s gone too. I really think that Delgado is a cancer in the way he plays the game…much too cavalier!

  57. 1994 says:

Play ball, what an interesting concept, when do you think the Mets will buy into that ?

This is for you Wrightpower and Willie, Omar and the idiot Wilpons.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  58. NY Cuban says:

ITS GONNA BE UGLY TONITE…EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVE!!!

  59. ctmetsfan says:

    ……………This just in.

To boost his confidence, Willie will be batting Carlos Delgado clean-up tonight.
    HaHa…..(just kidding).

This is gonna be a looooong season.

  60. big shea says:

“It’s about winning ball games.” Oh…you think so doctor? Just f’n do it then!

  61. Maineiac says:

Beer money sucks. It’s a rip off of Cash Cab and SNY really dropped the ball when it came to covering this conference.

  62. VelvetFoot says:

    Plenty of time left.
    Don’t worry, be happy.
    Let’s go Mets!!!!

  63. stickguy says:

    ugh. aonother post eaten.

If Willie is here, lets move on. I want to know what all the wonderful ideas they have to “fix” the team, and am looking forward to seeing creative and constructive player moves shortly!

    • almar1965 says:

I think I have an idea. It involves Omar signing two more 35+ year-old, often injured players that he used to know years ago, along with a pitcher that can throw a straight 95 MPH fastball but has no control.

  64. stickguy says:

OH, and it looks like Matt might have to get a part time job to make ends meet. based on the posts in this thread, there will be a whole lot less people visiting the site now!

    • Maineiac says:

How does Matt make money from us? By selling T-shirts? He is getting paid by SNY regardless of the Mets performance. I know it breaks Matt heart as a Mets fan to see them lose, but it doesn’t hurt his pay check.

      • stickguy says:

Most Web sites like this get paid by traffic. whether hits or posts, if the traffic is down, he will get less revenue.

Sort of like a newspaper. If their circulation goes down, advertisers pay less.

        • Maineiac says:

Okay. I wasn’t aware of that. I shouldn’t judge then.

But he does have a deal with SNY, so even though we impact his website it is not like he will be living in a cardboard box, right?

  65. soulsea says:

I’m feeling “bad passion” on this blog

  66. Gina says:

“He’s the manager…and I hope he is our manager for many years to come.”

of course he does? As soon as Willie’s gone there’s no one else to blame but him.

    • soulsea says:

      sooooooooooooo true

    • almar1965 says:

Omar knows the only thin between him and the unemployment line is a certain manager we all know and “love.”

      • NYMBosco says:

Exactly! Willie is Omar’s scapegoat which is why he wasn’t fired last year after the collapse and why he is not getting fired now. Omar needs his job security and willie will be his next move when the team keepslosing

  67. big shea says:

Willie: “We’re what 4.0 or 4.5 games back I believe?”

THE GUY DOESN’T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY GAMES BACK HIS TEAM IS — AND THEY ARE PLAYING THE FIRST PLACE TEAM TONIGHT NO LESS!

Hey Willie, here’s another stat for you: Your team’s payroll is $115 million more than the team you are playing tonight…yes that same team that you are trailing by 5.5 games.

    • NYMBosco says:

Why should willie worry about how many games they are behind? It’snot like a game or two matters (see 2007 collapse!) when the only thing we needed was one more win….What a jerkkkk

  68. breadclock says:

The Fab Four: Willie and Omar and Fred and Jeff.

Rest assured, Mets fans. The past is the past. We’re in a new era of Mets baseball. One we’re all familiar with. As long as these guys stay intact we’ll never have to suffer through anymore playoff disappointments or worry about choking away division titles.

Next mission: eff up the draft again.

    • Maineiac says:

They’ll sign some relief pitchers, and a future back up catcher from the draft.

  69. Church4prez says:

Be4 tonites game i would like to say that i am officially embarrassed to be a mets fan because what will happen tonight will now put us on the same level as PHILLY FANS! so tonight when the mets are winning, make sure to boo your own team because thats met fans do now we boo. thats productive

  70. 1994 says:

This team will now wonder in the desert for 40 years.

I hope the poor suckers that paid their hard earned money to see these putzs tonight BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the hell out of them Especially the bums delcrappo and castillo…two of Omars homies.

  71. Church4prez says:

Absolutely. I wont tell anyone not to boo, but boo instead of lets go mets chants at first pitch. thats going to help the team a lot.

  72. Jmiles says:

man there are some vicious people here. Why isn;’t it ever the players fault?
Does Willie tell Jose Reyes to swing at the first pitch with runners on base.Does Willie make Delgado swing at bad pitches all the time? I’m upset at Willie as well but as I’ve posted in the past can we get a freakin left fielder who will play 145 ganes a year???
Cliff Floyd,Moises??? How about a second baseman who can play a day game after a night game.Is this what we have with Castillo for 4 years???
I mean this is way beyond Willie.I think we should bring Art Howe back.would that make everybody happy??
    Peace, JM

    • almar1965 says:

You are right. The players do take a slice of the blame of this crap pie. But in regards to players like Reyes or Delgado, why have they not responded to Willie, unless perhaps Willie’s approach is not getting through after a full year of baseball.

It is not that Willie cannot be a good manager. It is that perhaps the marriage between him and the NY Mets needs to end. We will find out soon enough, maybe within a month.

I still think that regardless of today, if they are still playing like crap at the end of June, no way Willie survives the All-Star break.

    • breadclock says:

It’s the player’s faults for being outperformed physically and mentally day-in and day-out. But for the posters who always fall back on the “[fill in the manager's name] doesn’t hit, he doesn’t run the bases, he doesn’t pitch” nonsense, it’s a load of crap. Under that rationale, outside of a full-blown player’s mutiny or the manager committing a felony, when is it ever a good idea to fire the manager?

Why was Art Howe ever fired? He never told Kaz Matsui to stink. He didn’t swing the bat for Karim Garcia. He wasn’t ordering Victor Zambrano to bury the team with a 5 run hole in the first 2 innings every outing.

The manager (like Howe, like Randolph) should be fired when the team is hopelessly lost, and he has hopelessly lost his influence on the team to improve.

      • almar1965 says:

I think that is what it has come to. You basically described the age-old reference to “losing the team.”

  73. Church4prez says:

All mets fans who go to the park to boo have lost the right to call themselves true metfans,

  74. Gland says:

What’s the plan if they do well tonight? Still boo?

    • Maineiac says:

If they do well then you put your hands together like the man on the audio system at Shea tells you to do.

    • NegativeFan says:

If they do well tonight, big f**king deal. Win 6 in a row, win 7 of 10, etc before you dare to act like 1 good game is anything more than a fluke

  75. playmaker3128 says:

If we keep willie and this team turns it around it would be a great story. I’m sure the wilpons realize this as well. Saying how he was on the brink of getting fired and led this team back to where it needed to be. I’m no giants fan, but it would be sort of like what happened when the giants were 0-2 and people were calling for coughlins job. If the mets don’t improve they can just fire him and maybe omar. Who knows maybe we’ll look back and say after almost being fired May 26th this team turned it around.

    • Church says:

Well Coughlin also changed his style and approach to the players. A lot of us think he could be a good manager if he’d do that. But since he wont change his style, he can’t improve. Thats his problem.

      • metsfan119 says:

        Coughlin had a resume

        • Gina says:

Coughlin had(has) probably the best collection of young talent on a d-line in the NFL, all starting to peak at the same time and a HOF DE on top of that. I’m sure that helped a lot too.

        • metsfan119 says:

And Willie doesn’t have talent? Last time I checked his team led the NL in payroll. Yes, Delgado is an abortion, but he still has Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Wagner. Let’s not act like the talent isn’t there.

        • Gina says:

Beltran is still a great hitter but he seems to have no power left, his lack of power, coupled with Delgado’s lack of everything, creates a huge hole in the heart of the order. Is Wagner great, yes, but unfortunately unless all our pitchers go 8 innings we have to go to the not so great bullpen first. There’s talent but there’s serious holes too, it would be one thing if there was talent mixed with average, but we have talent mixed with abysmal which is why we’re hovering around mediocre.

        • Danny1986 says:

Gina, you’re way off base here. To compare football to baseball is a moot argument anyway, but Tom Coughlin had a plan and delivered it. Willie has not once indicated what his plan is to riht this ship, other programed cliches and going out and ‘hopefully’ winning a game.

It’s not about having talent on the roster. It’s about devising a way to have that talent work best togther, and making average ballplayers good, and good ball players great. Willie does not get the best out of his players. Coughlin is notorious for doing that.

        • Gina says:

I’m not disagreeing that Willie is a problem, just that he’s not the only problem. I just don’t think him changing his attitude or even changing managers is the magic answer.

    • almar1965 says:

” Who knows maybe we’ll look back and say after almost being fired May 26th this team turned it around.”

You mean the Collapseâ„¢ wasn’t enough of a shock to the system to “turn it around?”

      • metsfan119 says:

exactly, if Willie hasn’t done anything to turn around this team’s malaise by this point, then there is clearly no hope for him to turn it around now. He has lost this team, the Wilpons are being moronic at this point.

        • almar1965 says:

I think the Wilpons are trying to save face here and hoping to maximize Willie’s portion of the payroll. If they fired him, that would be 3 managers fired within 5 years and that would speak more about their failures as a front office.

          Just a thought.

      • breadclock says:

I think when we look back at that crushing loss to the Cardinals and how we came within an inning of the World Series in 2006, we’ll say that was the turning point for Willie and the Mets. That’s when they collectively grew up and knew that all it took was a tiny bit more focus, a tiny bit more heart and eternal greatness would be in their grasp. 2007 will be the year of redemption. The Mets will now step it up, dominate and learn to finish the task at hand.

Man, it’s fun to play the game of denial.

  76. metsfan119 says:

    What a joke.

  77. Justin says:

I just registered for this site to say this. This whole charade needs to blow over – if he’s not going anywhere, that isn’t the solution to this team, and the fans continuing to carry this on will only negatively affect the teams play. People just want their opinions to be heard, and since the people whose opinions matter don’t agree, the majority of fans are whining and want to see a change that will only distract the team from winning baseball games just to quiet the btching and moaning for another week. If you don’t enjoy watching the games right now, then don’t watch. Everyone still does because your a fan of the team and you take the risk of being disappointed. Every baseball team is gonna lose at least 60 games this year, to be safe. So looking back on this bump in the road with all this unnecessary hoopla is going to be forgotten and at best we’ll be able to laugh at it.

  78. metaje says:

I WONDER IF WILLIE FEELS THIS SERIES IS IMPORTANT EVEN THOUGH ITS MAY….

OR IS IT JUST ONE GAME OF 162 “MAN”

    ONE SERIES “MAN” YA KNOW

GO OUT THERE AND SWEEP….AND LETS ROLL

AND IF PELFREY TANKS…SEND HIS WIMPY REAR END BACK TO AAA…..EXPERIMENT OVER….IM TIRED OF GUYS AT MAJORS WHO HAVE DONE JACK $4IT IN THE MINORS…..

WHICH INCLUDES OUR HOLIER THAN THOU MANAGER

    • almar1965 says:

“HAVE DONE JACK $4IT IN THE MINORS…..
WHICH INCLUDES OUR HOLIER THAN THOU MANAGER”

Actually, Willie didn’t even do anything in the minors.

      Managerial-wise that is.

The Wilpons afterall hired him based on his keen wit and charming smile.

      • metaje says:

EXACTLY MY POINT…WILLIE THINKS HES ENTITLED TO THIS JOB BECAUSE HE NEVER HAD TO RIDE A BUS IN THE MINORS…HE WANTS HIS ROOKS TO EARN THEIR STRIPES BUT HE NEVER HAS…THATS WHY HES SO CLUELESS INCLUDING NOT KNOWING THE STANDINGS

WHEN HE LEFT THE PRESS CONFERENCE HE REMINDED ME OF JACK NICHOLSON TRYING TO LEAVE THE COURT IN THE MOVIE “A FEW GOOD MEN”….HE GOT ARRESTED….WE AS FANS ARE STILL IN JAIL…I REFUSE TO GO TONIGHT EVEN THOUGH I HAD FREE TICKETS…

I FIND WHAT HAPPENED TODAY DISRESPECTFUL TO THE METS FANS….WE ARE THE STOCKHOLDERS WHO SHELL OUT TICKET, PARKING, MERCHANDISE, AND CABLE MONEY.

YOU THINK THE WILPONS RUN THIER REAL ESTATE BUSINESS WITH INCOMPETENT UNPROFESSIONAL CEO AND CFO…..I DOUBT IT

  79. Sasseroni says:

    Mistake. Plain and simple.

  80. Mitten says:

hey listen i have some questions for those who are supporting the idea that its just the players fault that the team is doing bad…

yes, willie cant keep delgado from missing ground balls and swinging and missing…or reyes from hittign the first pitch into a pop up…or heilman for blowing a game, or alou staying healthy…

but he is supposed to manage these people, hench the term ‘manager’. his job is to bench delgado when he doesnt hit, or make sure he takes extra ground balls in the morning…hs job is to sit reyes down and talk over his bad abat, his job is to request omar to get him a different reliever then heilman…his job is to make sure alou is doing every single stretch he possibly can and participates in any activity to make him healthy….

while willie can not peform for this t eam, the teams performance is due to the ways he manages them…and since obviosuly the results havent been good, he obviously hasnt dont his job

    • Gina says:

How do we know he hasn’t been doing that stuff. And who would he have benched Delgado for and who’s to say that was even his final call. We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

      • MudvilleNine says:

You tell him Gina. He’s not suppose to sit down with Reyes to discuss his AB, thats what the hitting coach is for. Maybe he asked Omar for another reliever but Omar decided there was no one qualified that could do better. There are two trainers on staff that are suppose to make sure each player does the proper amount of stretching before each game. Managerial decisions are all on him though thats true.

  81. NegativeFan says:

DEAR SHEA CROWD: PLEASE CRUCIFY THE TEAM TONIGHT.

    THANK YOU

  82. bobbyjonesx2 says:

Figures that Matt doesn’t mention how insulting this press conference was.

Wait a second…. If he did that, he wouldn’t be invited to press conferences and wouldn’t be invited to Spring Training.

    Bias?? “Smells like it”

  83. stickguy says:

Where did the next thread go? I had a nice thought provocking comment there, and the shole thread just disappeared.

Can’t remember what is what it was titled of course…

  84. kjmcc0729 says:

it really is shameful that willie is still our manager. If there is no accountability for the manager, why would the players take any? They commented on ESPN that omar did not say that willie is here for the season, even though he was asked that direct question on several occasions. They also mentioned that when the Carlos’ were asked about whether willie should stay, neither one answered yes. they both deflected the question and responded that they play baseball only.

At this point the onus is on ownership to prove to the fans that they are committed to winning. Willie has captained the ship during the collapse, and now through a stretch of 18 games where they went 5-13, all against sub .500 teams! (the braves were prior to the mets series)
I feel as though the wilpons are taking their fans for granted. If this team does not turn it around soon, they are going to be opening a brand new stadium to the 39% of their fan base who thinks the team is on the right track!

    • kjmcc0729 says:

And another thing, why doesn’t Fred and Jeff have a press conference to tell the fans how confident we all should be in our team? They make these decisions, they should answer some questions! you know Hank would.

  85. 1994 says:

Right Omar, its the media and fans fault this team is sucking the joint out. No , why shouldn’t the media expect the highest paid team in the NL to play better.

Its all the racist, booing fans fault. It’s all the media’s fault for writing what our eyes see. You and Willie are just innocent bystanders here.

Hey Willie they love you in the Bronx and Omar they love you in the DR …bye-bye.

  86. leonwestbrook says:

These comments make me facepalm HARD.

Most of you are probably band wagoners who only conveniently show up when the Mets are winning.

Its only May and they mets are only 4 games out. The World Series wasn’t won in April or May so lay off Willie.

If you have to be upset, be upset at the players.

Still the season is still young.

    • kjmcc0729 says:

Leon, you are obviously a very dedicated, loyal met fan. you will have to excuse the rest of us who have only recently discovered this great sport of baseball. As you so adeptly pointed out, it is early. If I were as much of a fan as you, i surely would not have realized that the Mets are actually 5.5 games out. I certainly would not have realized that June is 5 days away, and in my ignorance I would never have been able to applaud your astute observation that the world series is not won in April or May. If i weren’t such a mental midget, I might be able to point out that while championships are never WON in april or may, they can certainly be LOST! But i bow to your knowledge and loyalty guru.

  87. 1994 says:

This team has played this way since last June….I can only speak for myself but I’ve been a Met fan since 62…no bandwagon here.

  88. 1994 says:

Anybody else get the feeling that if Omar didn’t luck out in baseball that he’d be selling fruit flavored ices on some street corner in Queens? Um, Um Um you know what I’m saying?

  89. NegativeFan says:

    Eh.

Back to GTA4 instead of the Mets….

    • NegativeFan says:

The team doesn’t care and the rest of the organziation obviously doesn’t care either.

  90. 1994 says:

Looks like all the buttkissers from the mofo are here too.

    • patrick says:

least you admit your fun has run out when you are all jerking yourselves off to no end.

      • 1994 says:

At least I have something to jerk, you on the other hand wear those rose-colored jerk glasses.

  91. crazyfan22 says:

i find it ironic that the team with the highest payroll in the NL is about to have its @$$ kicked by the team with one of the lowest salaries in major league baseball!

    FIRE WILLIE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the mets have talent, but willie has to go.

    (feel free to comment)

  92. Danny1986 says:

The decision point has come and passed. The solution to alter this team’s 2008 fate appeared in October 2007.

There are 2 remedies to a traumatic collapse like the 2007 Mets: Major Change or Time.

Since no change was made, the WIlpons/Omar chose Time as the only remedy by default. And that’s the remedy we are living through right now.

There is no magic potion b/c, last October, The Wilpons chose to take the BLUE pill.

  93. boomingranny says:

In Performance improvement you change processes and not people unless absolutely necessary. To build error free processes you need a safe environment. Think about it, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on these guys. They are trying, too much and too hard and not having any fun. How can you win when you’re too busy thinking and not “just letting the game come to them”. Can you imagine being Jose Reyes, being told that if you have a bad day, the team will lose? that the team will only win if he does well? That’s a lot of pressure for a young guy, especially in New york. Classic performance anxiety – the whole team is suffering. A lot of the stupid errors are from double-guessing and self-doubt. I think the Mets need a good Sports psychologist and maybe a retreat (lol)!

I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes for anything.

  94. dave27 says:

And the best part of the night? Aaron Heilman’s 2 scoreless innings, preserving his roster spot so he can come in and blow another game in a big spot.

The Mets are almost twice as close to the Nationals as they are the Marlins.

The last 15 batters of this game were retired in a row.

What is everyone waiting for? This team sucks. This team is not good. This team is relying on the utterly abysmal Mike Pelfrey every 5th day. Even the Yankees were able to put their tails between their legs and send down Ian Kennedy.

This team is utterly unwatchable. If today is the unofficial start of summer, then thanks to the Mets for ruining my summer and the last season at Shea. It’s impossible to feel any nostalgia with this bunch of clowns mailing it in every night.

  95. Lets_Go_Mets says:

    Same old Mets.
