By Matthew Cerrone - May 27, 2008 6:15 pm

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, the results from Ryan Church’s CT scan were ‘good,’ and revealed that the outfielder suffered no brain damage following last week’s concussion.

great, great news…i was a bit worried, actually…seeing as it was his second bang-up in a few months…great news…

However, the team sent Church home tonight to get rest.

very good to hear. Head injuries are always frightening.

On the baseball side, this is going to be one of those “indefinite” absences. Very, very bad.

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

church has already become a fan favorite.

On another note, i think a trade that will benefit both teams is beltran and castillo to the dbacks for byrnes and hudson.

Right now, byrnes and hudson need to do alot in that lineup so they have a lot of pressure on them.
Beltran will most likely flourish in that environment and castillo needs to go with him bec. were losing out on a lot of talent.
As for the mets, byrnes will be a fan favorite. He wont have to be the man like he was in arizona. Hes not that type of player. Hes more of a complement player.

Beltran has about 4 years and 75 mil left
Castiollow about 4 years and 24mil.
      Byrnes 4 years 40 mil
Hudson in his last year of his contract.

      • Gina says:

Why in the world would the d-backs do this? They’re losing out big time on money, and they don’t need Beltran, especially the way he’s playing now.

        • OrangEandBlue says:

The Diamondbacks would obviously not be responsible for all of Beltran’s money. The Mets would have to pay for a lot of the salary over the course of the contract.

All in all, who knows how Byrnes and Hudson would perform under the NY spotlight?

        • RespectDaBestRM says:

they wont have to be the main offensive players like they are now in arizona. They wont be expected to carry the team like they are now in arizona.

        • Don Hahn says:

Hudson for Castillo I would do in a second, but Beltran for Byrnes? are you crazy

        • RespectDaBestRM says:

one thing with byrnes, he gives 100% all the time and his personality fits new york. Beltran is the exact opposite. His personality is perfect for arizona and we cant say he gives 100% all the time.

        • Don Hahn says:

I like Byrnes alot, but Beltran is a 30 HR 100 RBI guy, gold glove outfielder, Byrnes is more a 20 HRs, 89 RBI guy, I’d love him in left field in NY, maybe if there was another way to get him, But I love Brynes grittiness, just what this team needs

        • NeedAnAce says:

Or what about trading Beltran for Matt Cain and Aaron Rowand?

        • Church says:

or Babe Ruth while we’re at it.

        • dontstopbelieving says:

I still find it hard to believe that people think that Beltran doesn’t give 100% — did you see his catch in CF tonight? Certainly was giving 100% on that one. Just because he’s a gifted athlete and makes things look easy doesn’t mean he’s not trying. Smashing into walls doesn’t makes you a great player. Byrnes had a fine year last year, but he’s no Beltran.

Castillo, on the other hand, I’d trade for 10 new maple bats…

      • dave27 says:

        I’m speechless.

  2. Flushing_is_Burning says:

get better Churchy!! we missed you, big time

  3. squad says:

This injury was handled horribly. This was his second concussion in a short time span and he should have been put on the 15 day DL immediately. Instead they screwed around with him, had him flying around in a plane, and even pinch hit the guy. Meanwhile, the team has played semi-shorthanded.

    Horrible job by Minaya here.

    • Fiya Minaya says:

      “Horrible job by Minaya here.”

In the words of William Wagner: “That’s a Shocker!”

    • Don Hahn says:

Yes, Minaya messed up, but where is the medical staff on this one, they should be advising Minaya on this, a serious medical condition

  4. boozermetsfan says:

so the front office peeps are the only ones with brain damage.

    nooch.

  5. GregB says:

the Mets are giving me brain damage.

  6. ToastyJoe says:

Matt, you should’ve had the cover of Dark Side of the Moon as your graphic here.

  7. Dennis A says:

At the risk of sounding creepy, where does he live?

  8. NeedAnAce says:

Thoughts on Church hitting clean up after his return? Hitting Beltran #2 would get both he and Reyes many more fastballs. It must be frustrating for him to constantly get 3-2 offspeed pitches because Delgado provides no protection. I think it could get him going a bit. I also think that Church can hold down the #4 spot as long as he hits with runners on base.
    1. Reyes
    2. Beltran
    3. Wright
    4. Church
    5. Tatis
    6. Delgado
    7. Scheider
    8. Castillo

  9. Don Hahn says:

how was he allowed to go to Colorado though? that didn’t make sense, I know hindsight is 20/20, but it was his 2nd concussion,

    • Nate W. says:

blatent disregard for his mental health, thats how.

    • squad says:

It’s not 20/20 hindsight. After a 2nd concussion in a short amount of time the guy should have been shut down. Period.

      • Don Hahn says:

so I guess we should start a new campaign to fire Ray Ramirez, just seem like common sense,

      • Gina says:

Or at least not allowed to travel with the team. Even if it was his first concussion concussions and compressurized air cabins don’t exactly go together.

  10. i got a concussion this past saturday and i still am shook.

  11. crazyfan22 says:

yes, rest up. we will defenitely need Church later on in the season.

  12. Nate W. says:

making Church fly to Colorado and spend 3 days in less than normal air while sitting on the bench being dizzy shows that someone in the Mets brass has brain damage… are they trying to damage the guy?

Now they have no Church tonight, a useless Delgado sitting for a couple days, and three catchers on the roster. I think maybe its Omar Minaya who has the brain damage…

DFA Delgado, call up a utility guy so they arent so short handed.
when Church is ready to play have Tatis and Schnieder (or Casanova if he is going to be here) share 1B with Castro getting more time behind the plate, and let Evans and Chavez share LF. (Evans and Tatis can be swapped if Evans is better at 1B)

    • Gina says:

Yeah I’m really not understanding why we’re still carrying two back-up catchers. Did Omar forget Casanova was still up? Did he forget Castro was healthy. Did he forget they’re both catchers?

      • Nate W. says:

There really isnt anyone better to call up… unfortunately. I think they see him as the next best bat off the bench, with Anderson out (not performing) they do need a LH-PHer

I guess Easley and Tatis are the ‘utility’ guys, even though neither is really all that strong defensively. But they do cover the whole field.

  13. Danny1986 says:

    Matt –

where in the hell did you find a picture of a cat scan?

  14. nyleetch2 says:

i’ve been a bit skeptical of using him while hes injured since they cant put him on the DL retroactively. Hopefully this means they won’t have to…

  15. boozermetsfan says:

    burkhardt’s a jackoff. 8PM start my A$$

  16. dave27 says:

Well for anyone who thought this team could play a nine-inning game, think again.

Why is Evans still in this game in the 7th inning?

    • NadyFan says:

Agree, Evans should be out for defense.

The bigger question is: Why is Willie still the manager?

Here are the facts, you decide:

The NY Mets were actually 21 games over .500 last Sept. 12. Since Sept. 12th and after last night’s 7-3 loss to the Marlins, they’re 28-38. That’s 10 games under .500 folks, numbers don’t lie.

With Willie Randolph as their manager this team has been a sub .500 team going on almost a full season now. They lost to the Cardinals (an inferior team in my opinion and many others) in the 2006 NLCS, then they went on to give us the biggest choke in Major-league Baseball history , losing 12 of their last 17 while blowing a seven-game lead.

If a manager can ONLY be judged and evaluated by his team’s performance on the field then Mr. Randolph is falling way short of expectations. Granted, not all of this mess is his fault.

It’s not his fault that Mr. Delgado can’t hit his way out of a paper bag, or that his “Genius” GM gave a 32-year old second baseman playing like he’s 50 a 4-year contract. But, when it comes right down to it, this is a team with the highest payroll in the NL @ over 140 Million is playing like a team with a 40 Million payroll (actually the Marlins have a 40 Million payroll and they manage to be 10 games over .500).

Let’s hope somehow, someway they turn this thing around and soon. One thing I can gaurantee you, the Marlins will not win the NL East, they will come down to earth by mid season. It’s still early and maybe by the AllStar Break all this mess with the Mets will be ancient history. Go Mets!!

  17. yubbajr says:

Wait until you read Wednesday’s NY Times story about Church… All I’m going to say is I really hope that he is back to normal… at some point in his career. The stuff about Corey Koskie is frightening.

  18. Don't mess with the Johan says:

For his safety, he should go on the 15 day DL. Two headshots in 2 months cannot be good.
