News: Delgado Out to Clear his Head
By Matthew Cerrone - May 27, 2008 5:50 pm

Prior to tonight’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Carlos Delgado will be out of tonight’s lineup so he can “clear his head.”

in other words, sit over there young man, and think about what you’ve done…or, have not done

According to Randolph, Delgado may get tomorrow night off as well.

    wow..
    this is actually a shocker

    • RPsJacket says:

It is a shocker. First, that Randolph is sitting him. Second, that he is not covering for him and saying he was getting his “scheduled day off”.

Maybe he heard his post game comments?

      • HOFMets57 says:

That’s the first thing that came to mind when I heard the lineups for tonight’s game.

Michael Kay said the same thing on his show, “If both Delgado and Beltran refuse to stand up for you, Willie, like you have done countless times for them, then quit protecting them. Throw them under the bus and let them take the heat. After all, they’re two of the biggest reasons why you’ve come under fire….”

        I wholeheartedly agree.

        • nomoredelgado says:

          WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

        • Danny1986 says:

Is it just me, or is Michael Kay just slightly more tolerable this year?

Good for him for getting that point across.

          And good for WIllie.

        • NadyFan says:

I almost never agree with anything MK has to say but this one time he is 100% on the money.

Willie is loyal almost to a fault. He protects Delgado especially and Delgado won’t even come right out and defend his manager. The only reason he’s still starting is because of Willie Loyalty to his veterans.

Things will work themselves out eventually though. No matter how much Delgado is making this year and no matter how much Willie sticks up for him, if he keeps hitting around .200 he will be relegated to ride the bench, baseball’s a cruel game, especially in NYC.

  2. TenTonHammer says:

Reyes should be taking a breather too.

Unacceptable defensive and on-base lapses. Screw the home runs.

  3. Runshouse says:

You see what happens when you Mouth off to John Heyman

  4. yawledog08 says:

    Stop the presses!!!

Willie is acually going to bench someone? A guy who could not hit in a key spot to save his life? A guy who acually can not field or run? Who strikes out more than puts balls into play!

    Where was this yesterday?

Thank you Willie for doing your job, even if it’s a little too late, please keep him on the bench.

  5. RPsJacket says:

    Now fix the lineup.

  6. MetsFanInVegas says:

So who is playing first for him? Marlon?

  7. toomanyuniforms says:

I think this will go a long way to clearing my head.

  8. maybe willie was listening to the Fan this morning. They were callig for Delgado’s head.

  9. mikeyrad says:

    Wow, it’s pitch-black outside @ 5:55. I’m praying for rain!

    • boozermetsfan says:

I know. I have the Corp seats but don’t want to leave my apt..

Anyone think it will pour and the game will be delayed? cancelled?

I could live with that as long as i don’t take the long trip on the 7 Train!

    • soulsea says:

Are the clouds real or metaphorical?

  10. Mr. Metster says:

    Plus he’s benching a veteran.

  11. D in Ben Lomond says:

perhaps the world’s first productive meeting?

hard throwing lefty + Johan needs Defense = Delgado late off the bench

    I like that formula.

Who’s in his place? Evans? He scares me out there in left. With Johan pitching, I’d rather see better D.

    • Don Hahn says:

I agree, Johan is a fly ball pitcher, Endy should be playing somewhere, thats a rough outfield, see maybe Easley should be playing the Outfield, and Tatis at first

      • therealsince86 says:

That’s a rough outfield, maybe Easley should be playing OF. Are you sure about the point you are making?

  12. it’s gonna rain?
getting delgado out of the line up is nice; tatis at first i assume?

  13. Tidewater says:

Can you sit an entire roster so they can clear heir heads?

  14. Tidewater says:

    That’s “their”

  15. Don Hahn says:

WILLIE! I’m impressed, you had the guts to sit Delgado down, maybe that meeting had something

  16. boozermetsfan says:

    rainout???

  17. Tonight:

    SS Jose Reyes
    2B Luis Castillo
    3B David Wright
    CF Carlos Beltran
    1B Damion Easley
    RF Fernando Tatis
    C Ramon Castro
    LF Nick Evans
    LH Johan Santana

  18. Phantaroth says:

If you think about it – Willie has actually done a better job this year. He’s become a better manager. He has been less stubborn, and this is another example of it.

He was quick to replace Heilman with Sanchez. He’s batted Castillo 8th a lot.

I think Willie’s done a good job. Maybe the players just don’t respect him, but that could just as easily be a reflection of the players.

Now – I still think you can legitimately make an argument to fire him. But I still think, overall, he is a good manager. Maybe just not with these players.

    • RPsJacket says:

He hasn’t gone far enough, and he may have been forced to make these moves.

He is still too stubborn, I would like to see him do more.

      • Don Hahn says:

I’d like to see him do more too, how about being agressive, he’s like Earl Weaver, always waits for the 3 run homer, he needs a little more ” White Rat” in him

    • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s all about the team’s focus, and the team has no focus. He’s just not right for the team.

  19. GravediggerHebner says:

I thought his head already was clear. Ohhhh, you’re talking about the inside.

  20. RPsJacket says:

Maybe there was actually a “productive” meeting yesterday?

Heilman in long role and kept his job last night…for now.

Wise didn’t, comes down with the mysterious “tired arm syndrome”.

Muniz gets a shot, maybe even in later innings.

Deldago sits to “clear his head”:

Please, please, keep it coming. You want to keep Randolph, fine, but keep shaking things up.

  21. End the season says:

How about clearing a roster spot instead?

  22. cver says:

Willie gave him a day off to clear the head that he’s not paid to think with.

  23. GeorgeThomas says:

FINALLY! If only Omar would show some guts and release him like the Blue Jays did with Frank Thomas.

    • sirk says:

then who plays first? u would rely on nick evans to play first every day rather than delgado??

      • GeorgeThomas says:

why not Nick Evans? At least he’d bring a spark that Delcrappo couldn’t. Then, if he doesn’t play well enough, look for someone at the deadline.

      • Nate W. says:

If Church isnt going to be out long then you could try Evans or Tatis at 1B. Casanova is on the roster (for some reason) give him a look over there. All the Mets minor league catchers play a few games at 1B or LF here and there to get their bats in the lineup, so its not the first time he’s played 1B like Piazza.

Marlon Anderson and Jose Valentin could be the other half of a 1B platoon later in the year.

        • PedroMANIA says:

Oh please. Casanova at first? Hilarious.

And your platoon would work better if Valentin was a better right hand stick than left which he isn’t… great points.

        • Nate W. says:

uh, Valentin (OR Anderson) would be the lefty half of a platoon with Tatis or Evans. Not a platoon with each other… Valentin doesnt need to be a righty bat.

ok with Casanova… but if they have him here because he can hit then they should use him somehow.

having an emergency 3rd catcher, a 1B who cant do anything, and a RF out for who knows how long… you cant play with that kind of a roster in the NL.

      • metz1 says:

i would and let me tell you why first of all delgado is not going to improve and wouldnt it be better to see a young player getting some time under his belt and improving than watching a older player who isnt?

    • twassel says:

And replace him with whom? Don’t say “anybody”, “the ball boy”, or “Lou Gehrig”. Of available options, who should play first?

      • toomanyuniforms says:

A big fat platoon, or Hatteberg, for all I care.

        • twassel says:

Hatteberg plays for another team, and the Mets might be breaking a rule by playing him. I’d have to check. He’s also hitting .173 with no HRs. That’s an upgrade. Delgado, for all his shortcomings, is second on the team in HRs and 4th in RBI’s. Replacing him with a warm body is not improvement.

        • twassel says:

Correction: he has the second most HR’s (he’s tied for third on the team after Wright and Church.)

        • toomanyuniforms says:

          Hatteberg was DFA’ed today.

I’d rather give Evans a longer look at his natural position, spelling him with Anderson, Easley, or Tatis.

        • squad says:

Don’t talk to me about RBIs. He hits FIFTH. With Wright and Beltran, both OBP machines this season, in front of him, he should be FIRST.

Delgado is done. Anyone who watches these games knows he is done. We need someone who is going to put the ball in play. Platoon Evans and Carp, they have to be able to do better than a .215 BA with a .295 OBP.

      • nrmax88 says:

A hatteberg/Evans platoon wouldnt be bad. Hatteberg is a smart hitter and can hit situationally which Delgado cant. We could probably get nice production out of those 2. I know one thing, they will produce more then the .200/.300/.400 Delgado has.

        • nrmax88 says:

twassel, last year Hatteberg posted a .320/.410/.490 line against righties. In 06 he posted a .300/.400/.450 line againt righties. He is a very adequate half of a platoon. Him and Evans would provide very nice 7 slot hitters.

  24. toomanyuniforms says:

Maybe he can spend his day off in a recording studio accompanying Peter Gammons for a stirring rendition of “God Bless America.” They’re both so “decent.”

  25. RPsJacket says:

This lineup is scary in its utter suckitude though. Man, I hope Church isn’t out long….

  26. Wondy says:

This is completely unfounded speculation prompted primarily by wishful thinking but…

Is there any chance they may be holding him out because they’ve got a trade in the works for him?

  27. cjscorner says:

Willie has done his part. Now it’s up to Omar to find a replacement. The Mets need a cleanup hitter.

    Barry Bonds anyone?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      “Final nail,” anyone?

    • twassel says:

NO. I’d rather lose than have that s*bag on the team.

      • nrmax88 says:

God you people are morons. You dont want Barry Bonds yet you complain about the offense. You dont want Barry despite the fact we need a LF and he is a top 5 productive hitter in the world. Then stop complaining and be okay with losing. You hate Barry Bonds because ESPN tells you to. Do you hate every steroid user equally? Oh, no its because Bonds is such a jerk, right? I bet he will come right into the Mets clubhouse and slap Reyes in the face, and piss on David Wrights locker. Give me a break. Anybody that complains about the Mets offense and then turns around and says they dont want Bonds is just a complete and total moron. Yeah, Bonds will mess up this great team chemisty we have right now. I mean, its so beautiful there, with Wagner and Delgado sputing off, Wright getting impatient, Willie on the chopping block etc. Why mess with this?

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You may be the dumbest person ever to refer to others as “morons.”

        • nrmax88 says:

Why, because for some reason, I dont scoff at the idea of bringing in the best hitter of all time who is still a top 10, probably top 5 hitter in the world? How can you complain about this team, and say no to Barry Bonds. It is mind boggling.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Why do you think people don’t want Barry Bonds, genius? Hint: it has little to do with his batting average, and a lot to do with spending money to watch and support the Mets.

        • nrmax88 says:

BTW, When I post something, that I feel is thought out and makes a point, and the response back just calls me dumb, without any reason, I feel I won that little debate. Atleast I tell people why I think they are morons. What is not correct about my post, or what makes it do “dumb?” Give me a legit reason why the Mets shouldnt go after Barry Bonds. And stupid personal cr*p doesnt count. Tell me how putting his .450 OBP and his .600 SLG in LF will somehow be outweighed by his negative presence, or some imaginary distraction?

        • nrmax88 says:

Wow, what were you just refreshing the screen every 4 seconds waiting for me to answer?

“Why do you think people don’t want Barry Bonds, genius? Hint: it has little to do with his batting average, and a lot to do with spending money to watch and support the Mets.”

WTF does that mean? Barry Bonds would definitely make the Mets better. Isn’t that what you want? Or is this some self righteous BS about how people just wont root for a steroid user because we are too noble and classy for that? I dont get it. If you dont like him personally, and dont want him on the team, that is one thing, but to openly call out the idea, and say no way, its stupid, and then turn around and complain how bad the offense is, this is just unbelievably moronic.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I’m referring more to your tone.

If you can’t understand why people could give a rats about Bonds’ OPS (which you might see were he healthy, which you won’t see), why don’t you read the post you responded to? Bonds is a selfish, self-obsessed megalomaniac pushing 45 with pending perjury indictments. Sign me up!

        • nrmax88 says:

The trial is a non issue. That could easily be worked out in a contract. If he goes to trial this year (which there is no chance of) the Mets can void the deal. Do you know Bonds personally? Can you give me evidence that teams he has played on have done worse because of his selfishness? That his ego and selfishness have somehow caused more negative results then his bat has caused postive results? What do you mean he isnt healthy? He is as healthy as he was in 2007, when he was as productive as any hitter in the league. He posted an OPS+ of 170 last year. The guy can still absolutely mash. All I am saying is, if you dont want Bonds in LF, you have no right to complain about how bad the offense is. He would give an unmeasurable boost to this teams offense, that is not even up for debate.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Let’s get this straight: unless I’m OK with an alleged felon who has dragged the sport through slime and tainted its most hallowed records, I lose my “right” to complain about the offense.

This is sort of like saying “hey, if you don’t want the Mets to take HGH, don’t complain about the offense!”

I applaud the Mets for operating within some constraints (not signing Bonds . . . though I’m sure it’s a money/PR issue,) but think they could do a far better job within those constraints.

Let me know if that can’t work it’s way through the several inches of skull, and if not, I’ll write it out in crayon and FedEx it to you. Might make more sense to you that way.

  28. rivertech says:

I wish my boss were to give me a day off so “I can clear my head”. LOL

  29. Mex_17 says:

    Yay Willie!

  30. Flushing_is_Burning says:

This lineup looks a little sad but…, THANK YOU WILLIE!! this should have been done last season

  31. Don Logan says:

This move seems like a behind the scenes, “Omar told me to do it move” more than Wilie doing it on his own.
Why would he do it now after Delgado hit 3 homers in 4 games last week rather than when he was in a 2-40 slump and Willie kept trotting him out there. The timing of this makes me suspicious it’s even Willie’s brainchild.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Fair point, but Omar’s job should be to make personnel moves, not tell the manager who to bench and when. I’d rather Omar spent his time looking for someone who can play a decent first base and be moderately productive at the plate, and not drag the whole team down like this useless pantload we’ve got there now.

  32. Fiya Minaya says:

Good. Now DFA him and fire Bernazard and then we’re in business.

    • nrmax88 says:

How about you lock yourself in your garage and turn your car on and take a nice long nap. Then I will be in business.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

That was a nasty, pointless, and irresponsible post, and you should be ashamed.

And yes, Bernazard should be canned.

      • Fiya Minaya says:

Oooh a big tough internet guy. What? Did I hurt your little feelings? Sniff sniff.

  33. crazyfan22 says:

I hope he stays out of the lineup

  34. Danny1986 says:

I’ve been a Willie basher not because of the many things he does (honestly…not much of a sample there anyway), but more so because of the many things he DOESN’T do. His level of inactivity and the perception of him living in denial with the state of this team is what is so intolerable to me. The image of him as the captain going down with the ship has stuck for months. And he did little to change that in all his cliche-saturated press conferences and calm on-field demeanor.

But things like this benching Delgado decision makes me want to stand up and appalud WIllie. And applaud LOUD. Hell…bench Beltran and Castillo as well. Make Reyes and Wonderboy Wright run laps after the game or do midnight batting practice. Tell Schneider to call a better game. Call out the underperformers in the press conferences and really tell us how it is after each game. Tell Peterson to turn off his IPOd blaring Peter Paul and Mary, stop with the KumbahYa karma crap, and tell these pitchers that they are going 120 pitches minimum and need to tough it out. Stop thinking and phuking pitch. The more often Willie does these things, the more he is going to find that this fan base will quickly get behind him. Because it will become evident that 1) he is trying. and 2) the issue is the players, and that something stinks in that clubhouse Omar constructed.

Willie has dug his grave with the WIlpons and Omar, and now he is operating in survival mode. And when you operate in survival mode….you do what it takes to win. You don’t care who you piss off. And if that is the page he has turned (AND I SERIOUSLY HOPE IT IS), than I am certainly willing to get back on board with Willie and root him on the rest of this season. Because that page turn is exactly what I have been begging for over 162 games already!

And if Willie still fails, well, at least he earned back some respect from us fans and shed light on the real issue with this team.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Clap clap clap….post of the year.

      • phoola says:

oh please, save it for Mike and the Mad Dog – oh wait, they already said this. And I thought it ridiculous the first time.

    • The Glider says:

You guys give Willie too much blame at times and too much credit at others. Who didn’t know that with a tough lefty (Andrew Miller) pitching tonight and Delgado struggling again at the plate that Willie wouldn’t sit him for Evan, Easley, whomever. It just shows that you’re not paying attention or don’t know what you’re talking about.

If that’s a shock to you, then I don’t know quite what to say. Maybe it’s the froth coming out of your mouth. Have you been bitten by a dog lately?

      • Danny1986 says:

You can downplay this all you want.

When has Willie ever announced prior to a game that Delgado was out to clear his head today and perhaps tomorrow as well? This is a benching, not a strategic move to avoid a lefty-lefty match-up. SNY states it. ESPN Radio states it. Practically everyone realizes this, except Glider…who clearly is the one not paying attention.

      • metz1 says:

tough lefty? hes got good stuff no doubt but he isnt randy johnson just yet.

    • nrmax88 says:

Bench Beltran? Yeah, good idea. Brilliant actually. Bench the best CF we have ever had because of his awfully unbelievably horrible 800 OPS in May. Oh, its so horrible. Most teams would kill to have a gold glove CF who posts an 800 OPS, and Beltran’s OPS will be up near 900 before the end of the year. Make Reyes and Wright run laps? That is just straight up laughable. If I was David Wright or Reyes, and Willie told me to run laps after a game, I would laugh at him, then when I realized he wasn’t kidding I would keep laughing at him. And I wouldnt run the laps either. What is he going to do, bench them? Its crazy. This isn’t a highschool team. I agree that he needs do what ever he needs to win, but benching your best player and making your best 2 young players run laps, or embarrasing/punishing them in some other way is just stupid. Mike Francesa really hit it. The problems are 3. No Pedro, No alou, and for all meaningful purposes, no Delgado. If we have 2 out of those 3 things going for us , we will win, if only 1 of them, or in this case, none of them are going, it will be tough.

  35. therealsandman says:

    praise the lord

  36. Boooooo says:

I hope by ‘clear his head’ you mean put a 9mm next to hit and pull the triger until the gun goes click?

If not, then whoopie.. hell be back in two days batting 5th.. instead of 7th which is wehre he was actually heating up.

  37. LGNYM says:

Before anyone goes that nuts, how do we know Delgado didn’t request a day or two off??

    • FireOmar says:

If he did it would be as easy as Randolph saying that. He didn’t and isn’t sticking up for Delgado for once. He is saying what he truly feels. Bench him for the week for all I care – way to go Willie! This is what I want to see – hold your players accountable.

Also – Delgado – don’t mess with John Heyman :)

  38. ness589 says:

Any chance he is clearing his locker as well?

  39. metz1 says:

a lot of good college 1st baseman in th upcoming draft.

  40. metschamps says:

ok I seem to have missed the statements from Beltran and Delgado throwing Willie under the bus – I see ones on anothe thread and they did not seem offensive that way – what else did they say…

    • phoola says:

Nothing. It is just the anti-Delgado crowd here interpreting Delgado’s refusal to get needled by a pushy reporter as somehow “anti-Willie.” It’s as if Mike Francesca sets the talking points for the day and the fans here claim to hate the guy yet parrot every idiot statement he makes.

Delgado is a team player. Makes no nevermind to me what he says to a reporter, production is all that counts. I agree it’s a good idea to sit Delgado against a tough lefty tonight but it’s also clear we need his bat in the lineup – look how thin it is without him.

      • petercast41 says:

The team looked better without him last night. We didn’t miss his pop ups with runners on base or his laughable (clean uniform) fielding. My disdain for him is genuine, not media induced.

  41. fansince62 says:

Delgado is a cancer!! That un-American bum should rot on the bench for the rest of the year! He hasn’t made an entry in his little book since 2006. How many different ways can you write “I stink”.

  42. MetsRunBX says:

HOW about you clear your head in AAA
