News: Rubin reports Muniz to Shea
By Matthew Cerrone - May 27, 2008 2:54 pm

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, RHP Carlos Muniz is on his way from New Orleans to Shea Stadium.

Rubin continues on to explain why Aaron Heilman or Matt Wise could be the player Muniz replaces.

In three appearances earlier this season, Muniz allowed no runs and two hits while striking out two batters.

    Hopefully WISE

  2. Church4prez says:

maybe pedro is going this week and pelf is gone

  3. MetsFanInVegas says:

This guy will do no better.

    • anditsouttahere says:

why will he do no better, he came here earlier, pitched four scoreless innings only to be quickly sent back. he’s def worthy of a chance in the bigs

      • Dirtysanchez says:

i agree. Why be negative about a new piece that can help. He has done a great job for us in AAA and when he was up here he did just fine.

        • MetsFanInVegas says:

Triple A is not the Majors. I’m all for giving him a shot and will have no problem with whoever is sent down for him but I don’t see him being that better over a long period of time. We’ve only had a short sample of him. I’d be surprised if he’s that much of an improvement. This team needs more than bringing up Carlos Muniz. Hopefully it’s a start.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

All i am saying is lets stay positive about this and welcome some youth on this team. Hopefully its a trend to continue.

        • MetsFanInVegas says:

          Hopefully

  4. Don Logan says:

Maybe Pelfrey’s going down? Armas has looked good lately if they needed to use him for a start until Pedro pitches.

    • Danny1986 says:

Pelf goes down. Muniz replaces Heilman.

      Heilman to the rotation.

      • Biscuit says:

Makes tons of sense to me….but then again, this is the Mets we are talking about here.

      • metsftw says:

it’d take heilman some time to build up to throwing 5+ innings, so we can’t just say put heilman in the rotation. as bad as pelfrey has been, i’m open to anything to get some f’n innings out of our starters. sick and tired of seeing 5 or 6 IP, 100 pitch outings from them.

        • Danny1986 says:

after seeing him warm up early last night in the midst of another Pelfrey disgrace, I thought perhaps he may be on the Joba plan. Guess not.

But a Santana-Maine-Pedro-OP-Heilman rotation would not be too bad.

  5. Church4prez says:

muniz is useless he will pitch in blowouts anyway

    • Don Logan says:

He’s more useful than you though.

      • therealsince86 says:

I think that this Church4prez guy may be posting on here just to bring fan unity. Because no matter if you are a sunshiner or a doom and gloomer we all can’t stand him.

        • therealsince86 says:

Hey, Gip I have to ask It’s not you is it? LOL Can someone get on this Church4Prez guy? Maybe it’s Vcarver?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

havent seen vcarver post in a while…………..

        • sheaheykid says:

I recently was informed FreeAaronHeilman is in fact the artist formerly known as VCarver

        • anditsouttahere says:

i was informed freeaaronheilman is actually aaron heilman and hes gunna continue sucking until he can go somewhere obscure to be a starter.

        • Danny1986 says:

          and metsftw is pedroissavior.

has go to be. Except he usually says one stupid/arrogant thing and that’s it. Pedroissavior would just go on and on and on and on.

So perhaps Pedroissavior’s balls finally dropped. because as metsftw, he’s showing a little less immaturity.

        • itsmetsforme says:

lucky i dropped by, otherwise no one at all would get your reference. pis was pre-06 bandwagon. but he was classic: if bill james and Rosanne had a child. Only he wasn’t funny.

        • metsftw says:

i’m not “pedroissavior,” sorry. this is the only name i’ve ever used on metsblog. did i burst your bubble? i’m glad you’re thinking about me when i haven’t even posted in a topic, though. not creepy at all.

        • Danny1986 says:

what can i say. it’s you use of vocabulary. it’s unforgetable.

        • Danny1986 says:

and itsmetsforme…..you don’t post here enough anymore. we miss your battles with youngblood.

        • metsftw says:

          haha

          i’m touched, danny.

  6. statnut says:

    I’ll guess Casanova….

  7. dave27 says:

No doubt Pelfrey is going down.

Heilman pitched 2 solid, and ultimately meaningless innings last night, preserving his ability to blow a much clser game for us soon.

Carlos Muniz! Way to jolt the ballclub!

  8. mikescud says:

    Can he manage?

  9. shea_guevara says:

Heilman? They’ve been talking about him accepting a minor league assignment. He looked fine last night, though.

Or they’ve decided Pelfrey’s gone once Pedro returns, so they’re adding another bullpen arm in the interim.

Unless somebody’s hurt that we don’t know about. Woo hoo!

    • keithc says:

If nothing else, Heilman showed that he can handle the Darren Oliver role better than Aaron Sele could last year.

  10. ness589 says:

    God please be Heilman

    • mets2010 says:

i think heilman did great last night, maybe thats a good role for him, to be a long relief, id give him a shot at that before sending him down, big pelf needs some work though

  11. EliPorter says:

you have to imagine that the mets need at least 90 wins to make the playoffs. in order to win 90, the mets need to go 67-46. to put that in perspective, if the mets were to play at that pace for 162 games, they would win 97 games.

    • statnut says:

Just like their 2006 season! Coincidence?

    • dave27 says:

It’s far too early for “paces.” When they left Yankee Stadium they were on pace to go 89-75.

      • dykstraw says:

sorry, but when is it the correct time to talk about paces? when we’re 7 up with 17 to play?

it gets late early around here.

        • metsftw says:

there is never a time for talk about paces, because they’re retarded. a guy had 2 rbi in the first game of the season?! He’s on pace for 324 rbi! wowwwwwwww!!!!!!11

hyperbole, but you get the point.

  12. ccmetfan says:

    Maybe Heilman is going down

  13. nawrockstar says:

Heilman is terrible… If you think his 2 scoreless innings yesterday under no pressure whatsoever were good enough to keep him his job in the big leagues then the Mets deserve to be a sub .500 team. His performance this season has been unacceptable. BRING OUT THE HEILMANS AND BRING OUT THE MESS!!!

    • SheaVendor says:

It was only the 5th inning and they were down by 3. He kept them in the game. Why would you think there was “no pressure”??

  14. Church4prez says:

maybe they are rushing pedro this week

  15. theperfectgame says:

My money’s on Church to the DL. But only because I’m a pessimist and that would be some pretty lousy news. Plus, with starting position players like these, who needs a bench? Yuk, yuk, yuk…

  16. dave27 says:

And if Ryan Church is going on the DL, I can tell you how thrilled I am that he’s had 4 pointless pinch-hitting appearances so he’s basically disabled 25 games.

No, I’m sure it’s another pitcher, because this team would rather carry 16 pitchers than any semblance of offensive options. Let’s keep running usless Endy Chavez out there in right and Nick “I am literally begging Willie to keep me in long enough to misplay a routine flyball into an inside-the-park homer” Evans in left, rather than find a replacement for Alou.

    • statnut says:

Well, in fairness to Evans, if Willie was smart, he’d be trying Evans at his natural position. Lets see if that happens tonight. When is Pagan due back?

      • dave27 says:

Well that’s one hell of an “if” isn’t it?

Pagan appears to be in the witness relocation program.

All this fire Willie stuff is nonsense – if minaya does not pull off any sort of trade in the next 5 days, he should be fired. This team needs a blood transfusion.

    • patrick says:

finding a replacement for Alou is not Willies job, and is easier said than done, Evans has done no worse than Alou would do tracking down balls.

  17. Church4prez says:

Lets get BIG BROWN FIR LF

  18. Church4prez says:

BIG BROWN COMIN TO SHEA TONIGHT!!!

  19. zen says:

geez, former mets pitcher geremi gonzalez killed by lightning.

    rip

    • dave27 says:

Between the current team’s lack of spark and the thunderous blast ARod hit off him 2 years ago, I am certainly going to hell for the wide range of inappropriate jokes I am supressing right now.

It’s a truly a tragic story though – what a terrible thing ot happen to a young guy. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

  20. D in Ben Lomond says:

you guys talking about barry bonds?

  21. backinbusiness says:

Evans and Muniz both up this week is a good sign, guys. Out with the dead wood, in with the youth. In a week when we all have a right to be frustrated, we can be cautiously optimistic about these moves.

  22. Church4prez says:

No Big Brown. He has won more than our 1st baseman ss 3b cf and sp ever has

  23. Flushing_is_Burning says:

aside from Wanger, sometimes Smith and Show (yes, I said it) no one else has made a good impression from the ‘pen. fresh arm is good i guess

  24. Gland says:

Reds designated Hatteberg. Maybe the Mets can take a flyer on him to platoon with Delgado.

    • dave27 says:

It’s a good thought, as sad as it is to take castoffs from a Cincinnati team that has far more prospects than we do.

    • statnut says:

He could be helpful, but who knows what the deal is with him? Did he play like crap cause he was losing playing time, or did he lose playing time because he was playing like crap?

    • kandiman says:

The only problem with that is that I have never heard of Lefty-Lefty Platoon. On second thought, Willie might just be crazy enough to try it….

  25. ToastyJoe says:

    In Homer Simpson voice:

“Please be Heilman, please be Heilman….”

  26. guierllNO MOta says:

actually Heilman has had 2 solid outings his last 2 times out and hes better with multiple innings, since we have no long man, he is the closest we have

the obvious one is Pelfrey, I mean when/if Pedro came back, if they released Claudio Vargas and kept Pelfrey…then I will finally be the last holdout of the Fire Willie and Omar movement…Pelfrey was rushed up 2 years ago and it clearly has not benefited him or the mets.

  27. Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

I wish Delgado was the one going down……

    • JSC1968 says:

He does suck right now no question, but so does everybody else. I want Heilman & Pelf gone bad. Pelf can come back when he used to the pen.

  28. Don Hahn says:

thats Gonzalez story is so bizarre and sad, I was almost hit by lightning, within 3 feet, pretty scary, I would think that the Mets have to send Pelfrey down, he needs work, Vargas at least throws strikes, all those deep counts hurts the defense too, fielders start playing on their heels, no ryhythm, Maine needs to pound that strike zone too, trust his stuff

  29. the Straw says:

    Lets think about this logically.
The current bench (assuming Evans and Endy are starting) is:
Church-bc he can only pinch hit
    Easley
    Castro
    Casanova
    Tatis

Because of this lack of flexibility, if anyone of these guys were to go down Casanova or DL Church, you would have to bring up another fielder. Otherwise the bench would be way too shallow.

So if Muniz comes up its gotta be for a pitcher. Pedro is supposed to be back soon, but not soon enough that he can replace Pelfrey or Vargas next turn in the rotation. So why send either down now for a spot starter, when you can jsut give them one more turn and demote them after it in favor of Pedro.

This means the logically conclusion is Muniz is coming up to replace a reliver. its got to be heilman. Either they are just fed up with him or want him to get stretched out in the minors. Either way, its got to be him.

    • dave27 says:

Why doesn’t Willie give Tatis a shot? He’s hitting any chance he gets and actually looks excited to be here. At least try to ride a few short-term hot bats while oyu can…

  30. Mingo says:

In all honesty, with the Mets going to their farm system, it appears that Omar is under the gun, not Willie. Its obvious the Mets got old and got old fast. They have too many old holes in the lineup. Somewhere, someone has waken up and been told to do whatever it takes to win. This is part of it. Cutting Sosa was also part of it.

Evans and Muniz are not ungodly prospects, but if the Mets have no future in the old guys they have, at least they are working on their future now. And Evans and Muniz will immediately have trade value as well. Its a good move for now and for the future.

  31. Church4prez says:

LTS GET GARRET ATKINS OR HOLLIDAY HERE THEY WERE AVAILABLE ACCORIDNG TO FOX

    • TheIcon says:

You’re getting your news from FOX? That says enough about you.

    • theperfectgame says:

We drafted Atkins initially, but he didn’t sign. I guess it’d be neat for him to end up here. But I don’t think he’s a good fit with the Mets right now. Nor do I think we have the pieces Colorado would want for him. And Holliday is a pipe dream for us. We definitely do not have the means to get him. Plus, I’m not convinced we should be “buyers” right now, Especially given the major league-wide parity. Come July 31, the market might be right to be on the “selling” end of some established-player-for-the-stretch-run-in-exchange-for-prospects deadline deals.

  32. RPsJacket says:

“or the Mets are about to make a series or moves over the next week or so…”

Lets hope this is the case, that they actually talked about a “plan” for turning this mess around after the mutual hugfest yesterday. I would welcome some roster moves, hopefully some position players as well. I want to like this team again.

  33. Johan4prez says:

Like it or not Heilman is a key part of our pen. Does not make sense to demote him now.

  34. Bruce Boisclair says:

I think we may see some changes around the edges. It would not surprise me to see Easley gone soon, perhaps replaced by Valentin. They could sign someone like Hatteberg or trade for a Millar to replace Marlon, depending upon when he may/may not be back.

I like the idea of mixing in more youth. The NY Rangers have done this quite successfully in recent years, but arguably they have a lot of talent to mix in with high priced vets like Jaromir Jagr.

    • Don Hahn says:

great screen name, I was a Bruce Boisclair fan, good ideas too, Valentin would help the clubhouse too, and Hatteberg would be a excellent addition to this team

  35. DMAT89 says:

Well lets see, Church went to see a specialist, and someone gets called up from Minors. I think i found the answer!

    • the Straw says:

you can not put church on the DL and bring up a pitcher.

you can not have a 4 man bench that includes two catchers.
      Just doesnt make any sense.

      • theperfectgame says:

It does when our bench is completely ineffective anyway and our starters are only good for 5 innings a night (if that). Plus, I’m sure some of those bullpen guys played shortstop in high school. Where has making sense gotten us, anyway?

Maybe we could just petition the league to let us expand our roster to 30… and use players from other teams…

  36. Church4prez says:

Marlon cant go he is one of iwllies GUYS!!

  37. guierllNO MOta says:

chruch4prez…for who????? FMart healthy is the only player we have that could get either of those Rockies…and it still prob isnt enough, wed need at least 1 pitching prospect.

  38. Church4prez says:

give up beltran for holliday straight up. And they would do fmart for atkins

    • TheIcon says:

Yeah, that’s the answer. Give up another prospect and forget about the future.

    • Gina says:

Why would the Rockies do that? Beltran is owed 80 million over the next 3 years and isn’t hitting for power any more. Holiday is younger and will probably be cheaper even after he signs an extension.

  39. Church4prez says:

the mets dont make sense either straw

  40. guierllNO MOta says:

theywouldnt take beltran for holliday…replace a guy making what like 10 per year for 2 years with a guy making 20 per year for 4 more? no no no….if the rockies trade holliday it will be for a stud whose young and under contract for years.

fmart for atkins is right, but do we need a 3B, as far as I can tell that is the only position on this team that does not need to be immediately benched or is constantly hurt….ok and catcher.

    • statnut says:

Atkins can play first as well(he has 16 career MLB games there, along with 17 MiLB games there).

    • MainStMets says:

Atkins is capable of playing 1B just as well as his current spot at 3B, if not for Todd Helton he would be the 1B for colorado

  41. Church4prez says:

    he is a 1b

  42. Church4prez says:

FIRE THE JACKET AS WELL!!! HE IS USELESS!!! BRING BACK CLIFFY!!

  43. Church4prez says:

holliday is a FA after this year

  44. GuruMets says:

Maybe last nite was the last audition for Heilman? Could there be a trade in the works here? Hmmm?

  45. guierllNO MOta says:

they still dont want 3-4 years of beltran in return, period. and atkins plays 3rd, helton plays 1st. thats what we need, is another positioon change guy, because of defense isnt already awful (see Wright, Reyes, Beltran, all 746382764 of our LF’s, Delgado)

    • patrick says:

Betlran and Helton make the same money from now through 2011 inlcuding Heltons buyout for 2012.

The Rockies would do that trade in a heartbeat if Helton did not have a no trade clause and the Mets were insane.

Helton is 35 this season, where as Beltran just turned 31, Beltran will be younger when his deal ends than Helton is today.

    • statnut says:

Again, Atkins has experience at 1B, he’s played there before. And he cant be any worse at 1B than Delgado, and at least he can hit.

  46. johnfromflushing says:

what happend to the castillo rally killer thread ????

    • NYMetsGrrl94 says:

i was about to ask the same thing!

      • DK says:

i just dont understand all the castillo abuse… look at his numbers they are not great but certainly not bad… he is a role player. If the rest of this line-up just put up typical career avg’s castillo would never be mentioned. Foucsing on castillo is overlooking the real problems.

        • Don Hahn says:

couldn’t agree with you more, the guy has a .361 OBP, plays a nice 2nd base, he is what he is, a slap hitter, I mean Wright hasn’t been exactly tearing up righties, Church hasn’t been able to stay on the field, Reyes is just starting to show life, and Beltran’s power has been nowhere to be found

  47. Church4prez says:

atkins plays 1b in his career

  48. Church4prez says:

    16 games at 1st

    • theperfectgame says:

      Hey, that’s a full season!

Wait, wait, no. No, that’s football. Damn…

  49. shea_guevara says:

FYI: Rubin’s now saying Matt Wise may be hurt, hence the Muniz move.

  50. NYMetsGrrl94 says:

on surfing the mets it says wise may be hurt again

  51. Church4prez says:

Great signing my Omah. wise is awful

  52. GuruMets says:

Just friggin great… why can’t Delgado be the 1 whose hurt?

  53. OrangEandBlue says:

I propose the Mets make at least one roster changed every single day. Yes, even during off days. Maybe the Mets can keep Delgado on the 25-Man roster but keep him useful by changeing his position. Delgado can be a hotdog or beer vender one night, then a Shea Stadium security guard the next. If he does a good job, then he can play the field.

Substitute Delgado with Heilman, Reyes, Beltran, and the rest of the team then rinse and repeat.

  54. SantanaCYYOung says:

On May 30, 2004, the Mets 49th game was also the Marlins’ 50th. The Marlins’ 8-6 victory at Pro Player Stadium put the fourth-place Mets 6 1/2 games behind. The Marlins led the National League East that day.

The Mets’ and Marlins’ respective records — 23-26 and 30-20 — in 2004 are the same after Monday night, too.

Warning: The Marlins faded and finished third, 13 games behind the first-place Braves. The Mets collapsed and finished fourth, 25 games from first.

Note: Three Marlins from that 8-6 victory four years ago witnessed the 7-3 game as Mets on Monday, and two of the three participated. Damion Easley pinch-hit in both, and Luis Castillo played second in both. Ramon Castro, who had four at-bats for the Marlins in 2004, was a dugout spectator on Monday.

Interesting statistical oddity, but otherwise pointless…unless Art Howe and Ty Wigginton are coming back.

  55. MainStMets says:

right now would even play 1st?

Looks to me like we might be seeing Wright as 1B some time in the next year or so

  56. Church4prez says:

Big brown in a 1b and Delgado to run the Belmont next wekend

  57. guierllNO MOta says:

wise was a bad signing??????? he gets paid nothing, it was a great signing, its when 2MM Jorge sosa signing dont pan out that are bad deals, or 1MM to Dave Williams last year…oh no Brady Clark as a non-roster invite didnt work either!!! terrible Omar!!! how dare you pay 25K to people who didnt pan out, we only want our 119MM beltrans to play like little leaguers!!!

  58. UnclePauly says:

Where’s my boy Nady…a rock like that is badly needed.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      in pittsburg

    • metinDC23 says:

Can we trade Heilman for Nady? Please?

Supposedly the Pirates might trade him and Heilman still has some value.

He can play first for us. Please baseball Gods- you owe us.

      • dave27 says:

I love it…then we can trade Nady back to the Pirates for a struggling Zach Duke or Tom Gorzelanny…and then re-acquire him for Tony Armas Jr. We can keep getting undervalued starters for Nady and then getting him back for worthless pieces!

        • metinDC23 says:

I”m cool with it if you are.

        • dave27 says:

As usual, we’ve driven Heilman’s value down to nothing, instead of using the insight that comes with watching him every day to trade high. The guy is either all over the place, or throwing the most hittable ball in the majors, or both.

  59. Church4prez says:

he cost us a game this year

  60. guierllNO MOta says:

how bout the 3 games in the last 4 reyes has cost us, even the one where he hit 2 HR’s he cost us with his defense.

  61. metinDC23 says:

How about the games Pelfry and Ollie have cost us.

Or that the offense in general has by not hitting.

  62. Church4prez says:

that would be too good to be true

  63. krumbledkookie says:

Perhaps Heilman pitching two innings last nite is a sign that they’ll try him as a starter in place of Pelfrey next go round, and replace him in the pen with Muniz?

    • the_other_matt says:

      That’s a nice idea.

    • dave27 says:

I simply can’t believe there are still people who think Aaron Heilman will ever – or should ever – start a game as a Met.

What are we more likely to see first?
      A. Santa Claus
      B. The Loch Ness Monster
      C. Mets starter Aaron Heilman
      D. A Unicorn

  64. Church4prez says:

Heilman needs to be joba”ed in order to be a sp

    • krumbledkookie says:

My bad, you’re right – I guess there’s not enough time. It is, however, nice idea. Especially if he worked as a starter who we could then trade.

      Thanks.

  65. backinbusiness says:

    Rubin:

UPDATE: Word is Matt Wise is again ailing and is headed to the DL.

    Brilliant!

    • dave27 says:

We should just let him pitch hurt all season and sabotage games like we did with Schoeneweis last year or Looper in 05. Willie trusts his guys, even if they are injured.

  66. UnclePauly says:

Can we send willie to the DL?

  67. Church4prez says:

    What will happen first??
    A.Willie Fired
B.Wright get a 2 out hit with risp
    C.Heilman a Mets Sp
    D.Delgado has a month hitting 320
    E. Reyes admits he is off the crack

  68. JSC1968 says:

I think Pelf is a nice kid, maybe we can turn him into a reliever, put some pepper in his food to make him mean.

BTW, I figured out a way for Willie to get some production out of his players … Waterboarding.

Bad footwork in the infield … waterboarding!!!
    Don’t run out a play … waterboarding!!!

Walk the pitcher with a 3 run lead … WATERBOARDING!!!!

These will guys will start playing some good ball, you’ll see.

Or maybe they will grow gills?

  69. JSC1968 says:

Peterson sucks, has he made a good reliever out of anybody yet?

He helped Ollie for awhile, 3 seasons ago Ollie could not get out of his own way. But, slowly he is regressing as well.

But, if a reliever isn’t good before he gets here, he is not making a transformation under The Jacket’s watch.

    • dave27 says:

Sanchez was alot better in 06 than he ever was as a Dodger, DBack or Pirate. Not sure if the jacket has anything to do with that.

      • JSC1968 says:

Nah, he came out the gate like gangbusters. Last year Joe Smith came out the gate like gangbusters.

This year the gang is just busted.

  70. dave27 says:

BTW – what ever happened to Delgado’s notebook? Have we seen that thing in 2 years?

    • GregB says:

i think they made it into a movie…I think Jim Rockford was in it.

    • Danny1986 says:

ive been asking that one myself. no one talks about that anymore.

gary/keith/ron have been very quiet about it as well.

  71. GregB says:

anyone else think Wise has an odd delivery…and not in a good way?

he reminds me of a catapult…he sort of leans back with the ball straight up in the air and then sort of tips forward catapulting the ball towards home…it seems like the hitter would have a good view of the ball the whole time.

  72. JSC1968 says:

LMAO!!! I know. I guess writing down how much you suck can be painful after a while.

We need this guy to turn the corner. D Wright can not carry the team the way Delgado & Beltran can.

  73. iamatwork says:

They should use big pelf as a long man.

    • JSC1968 says:

Ha. That is a euonym. Long man for Pelfrey.

Euonym is my elevator’s word for today on the captivate network.

(N.) YOO’-O-NIM – name that suits a person or place

Just adding a little edumigation to the diskcussin.
