News: Wise to the DL
By Matthew Cerrone - May 27, 2008 4:26 pm

Matt Wise has been placed on the 15–day disabled list with a strained shoulder.

RHP Carlos Muniz has arrived at Shea Stadium, and will take Wise’s spot on the roster, as had been reported earlier today by Adam Rubin of the Daily News.

In three appearances earlier this season, Muniz allowed no runs and two hits while striking out two batters.

    Here come the changes!!!!

Seriously, if there is an actual list, the Mets DL is as big as War and Peace already.

    • backinbusiness says:

The Rockies had our equivalent of Wright, Reyes, Beltran, and more one the DL and they still beat us. That is horrifying.

      • metsftw says:

matt holliday, todd helton, and garrett atkins were on the DL when we played them?

        • backinbusiness says:

Holliday, Atkins, and Tulowitski were not in the game.

          Here was their allstar lineup:

          Podsednik
          Herrera
          Helton
          Spilborghs
          Smith, Seth
          Stewart
          Torrealba
          Quintanilla
          Cook

        • whoamar says:

well, holliday did HR, win the first two games against the Mets, so this must be the game 3 lineup from sunday ONLY. gw.

        • backinbusiness says:

yes, that is the sunday lineup. (also, we won the second game, though that may be hard to believe now.)

    • whoamar says:

I’ll hedge a bet to say the Wilpons are making major changes by the AS break. I think he put them both (MGR/GM) on notice to ‘do what needs to be done’ and get into first place by the break. That is what right the ship means to me.

I have to believe that the inept mature of the starters, some of the lineup, and bench hitters are each weighing on one another. Its like an air-borne disease- it’s time to not only clear the air (which has been done yesterday) but eradicate the roster of the bad seeds.

The Mets will become sellers of the toxin and buyers of the AAA variety. The beginning is Evans…if he doesnt stay in place of Anderson, I might stop going to games all year.

  2. Fiya Minaya says:

wise is another player who should be cut. 83 mph fastball with a 75 mph changeup? lol

    • WozzyBear says:

Matt wise = poor man’s Aaron Heilman.

This DL trip is actually a good thing….

      • shinjosplints17 says:

Please don’t come back…Wise you have shown nothing. There is a Locker with the Long Island Duck wating for you. Omar has to take a minus for this one…I’d rather take a shot with Turnbow (if he is still out there.) then ever see Wise again

    • whoamar says:

well we did get rid of mota to get him. he makes much more than heliman, so he mush by comparison be a rich mans’ heine, no?

How can some of you compare a hurt player who hasnt pitched (Wise) , to one who consistently gives up the long ball in crucial late-inning nail-biters (a-run heliman)?

maybe we can send aarun to the braves or phils wher he will be our gopher instead of our competitor’s gopher boy!!

  3. Dirtysanchez says:

    What a surprise……..
Well at least we know whos spot muniz is taking….
Hopefully muniz will be more productive…

  4. phoola says:

And what does that mean for the Marlins?

    (everybody now…)

    BAD NEWS FOR THE MARLINS!

  5. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Seriously? from what? giving up runs?

  6. Danny1986 says:

We should have got some Ussinger’s Sausage and Bratwaurst instead.

  7. egnirc says:

Who thinks Wise keeps punching a wall and getting hurt that way?

    • whoamar says:

maybe he could punch aarun in the face and put him on the FL…that’ll win us 2 games each week right there.

  8. anditsouttahere says:

aww nawwhh, i really liked wise, i believed he was going to help the team now and into the future. say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so

  9. UnclePauly says:

Now if this can somehow get reyes and beltran to hit and del-bum to stop being GAWD awful we’re in business

    • whoamar says:

reyes’ glove is the issue now. he cant turn the inning-ender and it leads to a 6run pelphrey blowup.

  10. backinbusiness says:

Maybe Alou looked at him while he got hurt doing absolutely nothing.

  11. zen says:

    wise decision.

  12. metphan says:

    whats up with this guy?

  13. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Now lets figure out who is going to replace Castillo, Delgado, Hielman, and…

  14. UnclePauly says:

Let the batboy replace del-bum. Let heilman rest for a change and he’ll be fine. and have Mo Vaughn replace castillo…or just start calling castillo Mo, same thing.

    • whoamar says:

heliman can rest the rest of the yr for all i care. he has a fastball? that is great on the RH since it dives in. He should NOT be pitching to LH though-it breaks down and away and he can’t throw into them to start so its a meatball that travels 400 ft. not a good thing.
all these slap hitters that like the offensive double play need to get off the roster. Omar should do his job for once rather than defending willie, give him so players to use in the lineup.

  15. guierllNO MOta says:

this aint 07 people, our bullpen isnt harming us unless heilman comes in and we are down less than 3 runs….

our only concern should be the lack of offense and defense players have exhibited, where are all the Reyes, Wright & Beltran gold glove supporters these days, if one of them doesnt make a costly error tonight I will be flabergasted…i dont even care if thats spelled correctly, just love that word, hate beltrans half-attempt last night, hate reyes’ ole defense lately more, but love flabbergasted.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’m starting to love flabergasted as well, because it is what I consider myself watching the Mets on TV most nights.

Beltran did look like a teen with a tude, or a spaced out loser last night. I hoped someone wispered in his ear after the game. Something along the lines of “Here is a nice capital L that goes on your forehead instead of that baseball cap”

  16. boozermetsfan says:

who’s going to the game tonight? i got my company seats. i can’t pay to watch this team. just $8 beers.

  17. backinbusiness says:

Acc. to Newsday, he has a “weak right shoulder.” WTF?

Something is up with this guy. The Mets are handling him really weird. First he was out for 6 weeks when was playing rehab games and from all accounts was healthy in half that time. Now he pitches 5 innings and he is “weak”?

If the guy has no use, get rid of him.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

it’s all about $$$ man. he’s on major league contract, they can either release him on put him on the shelf

    • the Straw says:

why what do you care if hes on the DL or not. Gotta pay him anyway.

    • Nate W. says:

He’s not going to be released because he good enough that they might need him later. I’d be concerned that he is headed for TJ or rotator cuff surgery the way they handled him though.

I’m interested in what Muniz can give this team. He’s pitched well in lesses spots so far, and has dominated the minors the last two years. So hopefully he can step in and be a factor.

  18. cjscorner says:

Who is the biggest disappointment this year?

    Delgado
    Castillo
    Heilman
    Alou
    Pedro

My vote goes to Delgado because he was the cleanup hitter in 2006. The Mets offense carried the team after Pedro went down. The team lost it’s “swagger” once Delgado’s production dropped.

    • metphan says:

I have to say Pedro. Pretty hard to beat going down for two months on the second day of the season.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Castillo gets my vote for lack of hustle and apparently doesn’t give a crap.

      Delgado a close second.
Hielman a dead heat with Delgado

Don’t think Alou or Pedro should be on the list yet

      • Bruce Boisclair says:

Has to be Heilman. He was being counted on as the 8th inning guy and now he is nowhere near that. If we do come back and get into the mix, we need the Heilman-Dirty-Wags combo to be solid down the stretch.

My second place vote is Alou. I know we expected injuries, but I thought we’d get a few months of him until July…

    • dave27 says:

Where is Beltran on this list? Were your expectations for any of those 5 that high?

    • whoamar says:

well, makes since…what team in baseball wont lose production when your cleanup hitter cant hit?

  19. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

    Wise is our mini-Pavano.

  20. SoDakMets says:

“A weak right shoulder?” I think that having Wise on the 15-day DL will give the Mets just enough time to let Muniz show that he can throw in the regular season with effectiveness.

Here is what I could see happening. Wise goes on the DL and Muniz takes his spot. If it is 15 days from today that puts him out until June 9th I believe. When Pedro comes back on the third, Vargas goes to the pen and if Muniz is effective, Heilman goes down to the minors. If, and it is a big if, Pedro stays healthy when Wise comes off the DL, Pedro stays in the rotation with Vargas being the long man/spot starter to rest Pedro. Heilman and Wise stay in the minors to try to figure things out.

Then they both become trade bait at the deadline.

  21. BlueTrane says:

Wonder if we could trade Wise for some maple bats….

  22. UnclePauly says:

Maybe if our starters could make it through 7 we wouldn’t even care

  23. Oh well, who needs Wise Potato chips. He’s nothing to write home about, no offense. Maybe Muniz will bring something nice to the pen.

  24. D in Ben Lomond says:

Schoenweis and Wise were teammates from 2000-2001 and both started a bunch of games (Schoenweis mostly).

It may seem crazy, but maybe Schoenweis should get stretched.

Throwing that many lefties out everyday could pay some dividends.

Problem is he’s been effective where he is. Though Mets are 8-13 in games he pitches. And he hasn’t been effective against ATL or PHI. He blew the save in an important game in Philly. And all his bad games came against ATL and PHI.

  25. ccmetfan says:

at least it’s nice to see minor league players getting a chance to play in the big league. The team is not winning with its stars so why not let young farm players play instead of signing older FA

  26. Necciai27 says:

For him to be having repeated arm problems and for his velocity to be THAT badly down (Wise usually throws his fastball in the 88-89 mph range), something must be wrong with his elbow or shoulder. We’ve not seen the real Matt Wise, FWIW. We’ve seen damaged goods and him pitching through what is likely a serious injury.
