Note: Where is the Bench?
By Matthew Cerrone - May 27, 2008 9:48 am

The Mets are 1–19 when trailing after the sixth inning.

In 2007, on this date, the Mets were 5–15 when trailing after the sixth inning, and were 4–12  in 2006 in the same situation.

Following yesterday’s loss, Willie Randolph said:

“We came out and swung the bats well (on Monday)…I thought the energy was good, we got after it pretty good, but they shut us down after that.  We’ve got to do a better job of sustaining it through the course of the game…I don’t think any one has given up or anything, you just got to finish up strong – you gotta play nine.”

it’s like, every game is last September…and i think that has us all pretty exhausted, in May, fan and players alike…

…the bench has been terrible this season, which is a big part of late-game comebacks, especially with all the pinch hitting that happens because the bullpen is used so much

On this date last season, Damion Easley was hitting .273 with seven home runs, one of which was a walk off, while Endy Chavez was batting .342.

This season, Easley is batting .211, while Chavez is batting just .191.  Marlon Anderson, who hit .267 last April before going on the disabled list, is batting .167 in 54 at bats this season, and is again on the disabled list.

marlon, endy and easley are willie’s three favorite bats off the bench, and they’ve been useless this season…they are a big part of the ‘nine innings,’ which willie is speaking of…and they have yet to pull their weight, like so many other players on this team

By the way, Fernando Tatis is hitting .364 in 11 at bats, Ramon Castro is batting .333 in just 12 at bats, and Raul Casanova is batting .271 in 48 at bats.

Also, 25 games for Triple-A New Orleans, the 30–year-old Val Pascucci is batting .303 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI, while playing both first base and left field.

Man, Pascucci’s tearing it up, huh?

One of Easley and Marlon has got to go. This team has too too many 2Bs being put in the outfield.

    Matt,

Why do you point out what Marlon Anderson hit last April? He wasn’t even on the team!

  3. JefJarrett says:

We can bring Anderson Hernandez up and have him put up similar numbers, while playing MUCH better defense than Easley/Anderson.

Not that I think cleaning house is a good thing…..but does shaking up the bench, shake up the team…..or does it needs to be a starter?

    My thoughts for the bench….
Drop Easley, bring up Hernandez. Drop Anderson (already on the DL). Send down Cassenova (if we’re not going to use Castro as a pinch hitter anyway……..) and replace him with Pascucci.

Keep Endy around…..but only because there are no better OF replacements.

We can’t ride Delgado’s .215 average all season long. We can’t afford to watch our “power hitting” 1B strike out twice every game and be less clutch than anyone in the league. We can’t let Delgado boof little league ground balls to him in the field.

I don’t care how much this guy makes. We have guys who can do better, be a Val Pascucci or a Mike Carp. Give these guys a chance. They want to win more than Delgado. Delgado is done. He is late on every fastball and can’t hit a breaking ball to save his life. Send his dyed goatee and his awful swing anywhere else but Shea Stadium. No team is gonna win with a guy playing everyday at 1B with an average barely over .200.

Omar, Willie, anyone, how long we gonna give this guy? Seriously, I’m tired of hearing “its early”. We’re 50 games into the season now and this guy couldn’t hit a softball.

Castillo is too easy to get upset about, but atleast his D is okay. Delgado has got to go.

couldn’t possibly agree more. This team may be as bad as it looks, overall. The only chance they have to turn it around – absolutely the only chance – is to cut Delgado and send his horrible defense/baserunning/hitting packing.

The mets have never had the the balls to eat a contract and cut ties with a player (except Bobby Bo in ‘99 which he’s getting paid for until 2028). I don’t think the owners or Minaya has the balls to just say “we need to move in a different direction. Now.”

That’s not a good GM then. As a GM, you need to see these things. Sometimes you need to swallow your pride and do what you gotta do. Delgado is not a winner anymore. The end of his career snuck up on him and it’s time to cut the leash. I actually agree with Gammons when he says make a trade for someone like Millar who can bring more to this team that just what he does on the field. But if not via trade, promote Pascucci and see what he can do on the big league stage. I just cannot bare to watch Delgado swing and miss any more. I change the channel when he is up bc i already know the outcome….not what you want from your 1B.

Delgado is not a winner, he hasn’t won anywhere he’s been. He’s is bad for team chemistry and doesn’t care if he wins or loses. You can get a sense of his attitude by things like the whole God Bless America issue when he refused to stand for the song. It’s things like this that drive a wedge between teammates. I think he still doesn’t stand for that song. Notice that the networks don’t show the dugout when the song is playing. I’ve been to lots of games, and I haven’t been able to find him during that song.

        • patrick says:

unlike the Yankees the Mets play God Bless America about four times a year, opening day, Memorial Day, July 4 and Flag day.

No problem winning with Delgado in 2006 when he was putting up the best numbers on the team in the playoffs.

Half the players on the Mets where in the minor leagues if in baseball when Delgado protested standing for God Bless America, you get no sense of his attitude other than what you want to project of imagine, he ain’t hitting the ball and that is the only problem.

        • Mexworshipper says:

No, that’s not the only problem. He can’t field either, for starters. Tell me a winning team that he’s been on……none. I’m not “projecting” anything. Tell me why the media and any other attention gravitates towards Delgado when other teammates talk about players not having any fire or passion. The guy epitomizes the aloof and uncaring attitude that hurts this team. It’s plain to see that win or lose, it doesn’t matter to him.
