News: Pedro Throws Six Innings for St Lucie
By Matthew Cerrone - May 28, 2008 9:32 pm

Pedro Martinez allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out six, through six strong innings for Single-A St. Lucie tonight.

He tossed 82 pitches, 67 for strikes, and gave up all four hits in the fourth inning.

MLB.com and ESPN.com both list Martinez as next Tuesday’s starter for the Mets in San Francisco against the Giants, assuming he recovers well from tonight’s minor league start.

  1. I just hope he’s really ready when he’s ready because his next injury might be “career-ending” since he’s likely to retire after this season.

    Matt,

Has the Met front office gotten to you? Do they make you remove certain comments? Don’t know Mattie.

    • Prismo says:

Matt’s stated time and time again that he solely controls this website.

If he takes down a post or comments it’s because he doesn’t like what he said/posted, and that’s all.

      (Am I hired Matt?)

screw it. when Church comes back, make Tatis the everyday 1B.

I am liking this Delgado free baseball.

  4. stickguy says:

Hmm, wrong thread for that last comment!

anyway, send Pelf to AaA, and move Vargas a day if need be, but that should eb the rotation with Pedro back.

at this piont, maybe they should evaluate trading Perez (if they can get enough talent back), and plugging in Armas too!

  5. JSC1968 says:

You gotta stick w/ Perez, you spent so much time and effort rebuilding him. They need to go to the tape and see what he was doing when he gave up those dingers to Ross. Otherwise he struck out 7, not too shabby.

Santana, Pedro, Maine, Perez, Vargas, not GREAT maybe good enough, better than most. But Braves, D-Backs and Dodgers are clearly better right now.

We should start a thread on starting rotations…

    • kiteless says:

What he was doing wrong? He was grooving hanging changeups to ross on both homeruns. They were middle middle with no break against a swing-out-of-your-shoes type of hitter. I really dont understand why anyone throws that guy strikes or even chances a hanger with him. Get beat on your best pitch, not your secondary junk.

  6. Metsology says:

Pedro looked OK, but was completely outmatched by David Price, last years #1 overall pick. Price pitched six innings, struck out none, and allowed only two hits with no walks. He’ll see AA soon.

Pedro barely hit 90 mph and seemed to struggle against lefties (who hit 2-for-5 against him, but easily could have been 4-for-5).

  7. metsftw says:

so tonight it was david price (rays #1 pick) vs pedro? would’ve been a cool game to go to.

    • Metsology says:

It was - and there were about 500 people there. And Price looked dominant, Pedro looked so-so. I am glad his first start is against the Giants.

      • hot stove chef says:

When you throw 80% of your pitches for strikes, I’d say that’s a little bit better than so-so

  8. D in Ben Lomond says:

I’m glad he is slotted to pitch in SF also, since they are the only games I see in person all year, and he hasn’t pitched here 97.

So Pedro has never pitched in the new SF ballpark. But his career number in SF are pretty damn good. He is 4-0 in SF giving up 17ER in 43IP, and striking out 57. In his last three starts in SF, he is 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 28K in 22IP.

Lets hope he can pitch like he did when he was 24 and that the new field plays like Candlestick. Hell, I’ve seen Trachsel pitch a few gems here. You can do it Pedro! Its a good time to contribute.
