The Game:

The Mets (25-26) begin a four-game series versus Dodgers (26-26) tonight at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm EST.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

RHP Claudio Vargas (1-2, 3.93 ERA) toes the rubber for the Mets. Vargas was stellar in his last start on May 24 versus the Rockies, earning his first victory as a Met, allowing two runs on four hit and a walk while striking out three over 7.0 IP. In eight career games, six starts, versus the Dodgers, Vargas is 2-2 with a 4.29 ERA.

RHP Brad Penny (5-5, 5.32 ERA) makes his 12 start of the season for the Dodgers. Penny took the loss in last start on May 24 versus the Cardinals surrendering four runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two over 7.0 IP. Left-handed batters are hitting .361 versus Penny this season. He is 5-12 with a 6.21 ERA in 20 career starts versus the Mets.

The Notes:

David Wright is 25-for-83 (.304) with 4 2B, 3 HR and 10 RBI over his last 20 games. He is batting .529 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 17 career versus Penny.

The Mets bullpen has allowed two runs over its last 17.0 IP and retired 24 of the last 25 batters they’ve faced.

Juan Pierre
is batting .529 (9-for-17) with 4 2B, 1 3B in his career versus Vargas.

Only play Delgado against righties from this point forward, if at all

cockblockandrun May 29, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Love it…. DelCrapo back in the lineup. Hopefully we can pull out 3 straight games.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Considering RHP on the mound and our current team, Delgado has to play tonight. We have got to get another hitter. Believe it or not we need a LH hitter. I mentioned this earlier but Raul Ibanez would be perfect. Plays OF and 1B and is a good hitter. Should come cheap.

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Raul plays 1st?

He hasn’t hit for the past 3 weeks, but getting him in a lineup that isn’t horrific might help.

Seriously, I’m in Seattle now. Just saw them beat the Red Sox. They’re all batting .210.

Gina May 29, 2008 at 6:37 pm

I was thinking the same thing earlier, not about Ibanez, but about us needing a bat. I just don’t see how we have the pieces to get one.

And I wouldn’t say Ibanez plays OF. He stands out there, but have you seen his defense?

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 6:39 pm

We want Adam Dunn. Say it with me now.

Adam Dunn. Adam Dunn.

Nice sound to it, no?

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Who is there to trade? And Dunn would drive everyone crazy in a month if he came here.

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Niese, maybe? Or maybe we don’t make a trade. But Dunn > Ibanez, and probably will cost the same.

He’ll only drive the dumb people crazy. OBP of 400 right now, who cares if he strikes out a lot? Plus, this is very anecdotal, but against us at least, he always does a decent job of driving in runs when the situation calls for not swinging for the fences.

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Dunn is a good player, he has a high OBP, tons of power, it doesn’t matter how else he makes his outs since he’s a run producer, we’re not asking him to move the runner over, and at least he doesn’t hit into DP’s either. That being said, we’re not getting him, the Reds are not selling until the trade deadline. Teams don’t just give up players in May/June anymore with all the parity, and there also is money to be made.

Gina May 29, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I would love Adam Dunn but I don’t think it’s worth it to deplete the farm system any further. Especially if it would cost a pitcher, that’s the last thing we need is to trade pitchers.

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 6:55 pm

you’re right, I should have added as my other caveat to us not getting Dunn is that we have don’t have enough to trade for him, and what we do have, we shouldn’t trade, and the Reds will not let Dunn go for nothing.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Ibanez has played over 100 games at 1B. Plus he would cost us all of about 10 bats.

nomoredelgado May 29, 2008 at 6:25 pm

sucks that delgado is back but i like the tatis/chavez outfield combo

pkpiazza31 May 29, 2008 at 6:30 pm

he’s baaaack

mikey May 29, 2008 at 6:32 pm

you mention David Wright’s stats over the last 20 years as if he is on a hot streak. He has been mediocre at best

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Just compare Wright to this point last year.

nomoredelgado May 29, 2008 at 6:36 pm

20 years? how did he do in YMCA t-ball? I bet it was quite a hot streak

shannon May 29, 2008 at 6:40 pm

he obviously meant games (not years) but your comment made me “lol”

nomoredelgado May 29, 2008 at 6:43 pm

i know, im just a jerk like that…

dave56dj May 29, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Here is Raul’s line 24runs 7dingers 34rbi 1 steal .263
wouldn’t go as far as lumping him in with all the other seattle 210 hitters. He hit 21 dingers last year with 105 rbi’s and 33 dingers the year before. But he is 35 and I’m not sure he comes cheap, but he may be worth a shot if they would be willing to give him up for b prospects.

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 6:42 pm

He had a great 2 weeks early in the year. Since then, he’s been more or less worthless.

His ops year after year is well under .900. He’s certainly an upgrade over endy, but between his defense and the amount he’ll cost, he’s not really worth it. Also, he is old.

Yeah, he is better than the rest of their offense, you’re right about that.

As I said above. Adam Dunn.

metsintexas420 May 29, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Mo Vaughn as a Met >>> Adam Dunn

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 7:15 pm

That’s… not true.

Unless we’re talking pure size, in which case yes, Mo Vaughn is significantly greater than Adam Dunn.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Do you not understand how much more Dunn would cost than Ibanez? Ibanez could most likely be had for a Castillo type package where Dunn would cost FMart.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:13 pm

so after that trade, does that mean you are moving to Seattle as well?

phoola May 29, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Swell, another Delgado-bashing thread. I hope you will all have the decency to swallow your words when he picks it up tonight against Penny.

ParisWilponCOO May 29, 2008 at 7:36 pm

what will YOU do when he goes 1-5, 3K’s, 5 LOB, 2 misplays in the field?

HOFMets57 May 29, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Just 5 LOB? I would imagine that # to be around 7-8, like it has been for the last 3 weeks…

phoola May 29, 2008 at 10:19 pm

2 two-out hits, 1 run, a couple of brilliant defensive plays – I’d gladly take that from my starting 1B – especially when he is putting up decent power numbers. But I suppose you will continue to find some phantom “attitude” issue or some such nonsense. Go Delgado!

metsintexas420 May 29, 2008 at 6:47 pm

I don’t have a problem with Delgado in the lineup vs RHP, but why is he batting 5th?

Don May 29, 2008 at 6:47 pm

i bumbed a light from Lee Mazzillii today. he is much bigger in person than he otherwise seems. he looks pretty jacked. was walking outside my building presumably on his way to the SNY building. I had a butt in my mouth but no light, i was looking for a fellow smoker, and saw mazz. so i asked him for a light. he stopped, looked at me, and then just offered his already lit cigarette. i took it from his hand and lit it to mine and then he said, i’m done with it, and walked away. i bet a ton of those 80’s mets smoke. baseball is the one sport where you can get away with being a smoker.

nova86 May 29, 2008 at 6:59 pm

youre gonna die early

Pacman_Jones May 29, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Dude, that story is so TOUCHing.

ThisIsTheYear May 29, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I enjoyed it.

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Don’t you watch that commercial with the amputated finger lady?

Felonious Monk May 29, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Can we not say “toes the rubber” anymore? I keep getting an image of naked people, and it isn’t pretty.

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:23 pm

That might be the creepiest post ever

adam900 May 29, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Was at that amazing game last night, lets hope they continue it.

Pacman_Jones May 29, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Gotta love how we can never get 20k people in the stands for a weekday game, yet the announcer will say “45+” are in the stands. This will be very embarrassing when citi opens next year and it’s only half full.

Pacman_Jones May 29, 2008 at 7:06 pm

And this is why I will not worry about getting tickets to Mets games next year, unless we win it all this year, even that probably wouldn’t bring out the fans during the week.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Also why the whining by guys like “upperdeckdweeler’ about the reduced capacity at Citi is absurd.

rM teM May 29, 2008 at 7:13 pm

woulda had him

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I swear to god, from now on, 5 infielders against Pierre, I’m so sick of that little gnat

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:16 pm

NICE PLAY!

zen May 29, 2008 at 7:16 pm

endy!

rM teM May 29, 2008 at 7:17 pm

I love that!

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 7:17 pm

EN-DY CHA-VEZ! Clap, clap, clapity clap.

therealsandman May 29, 2008 at 7:17 pm

wow great play by endy, but brian schneider is a beast blocking the plate

MetsFanInVegas May 29, 2008 at 7:21 pm

This sucks. The game isn’t on the Dodgers station, FSN Prime Ticket, which I get here in Vegas and the series isn’t on Extra Innings. Never get it when a west coast team comes to play in NY. I’m stuck watching the whole series on Gameday except for Sunday nights game.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 7:25 pm

They’re on Extra Innings. Or is vegas considered part of Dodgers’ area?

MetsFanInVegas May 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Part of Dodgers area. It shows up that the game is on but when you go to the channel it says “this program is not available in your area”

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 8:06 pm

bummer

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:16 pm

dude…go to a sports book a watch it.

free drinks.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Reyes’ poor defense has overshadowed his bat coming to life the past few weeks.

rM teM May 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm

nice swing

Greg_Jeffries May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

i cant believe he just swang at that, where the hell is easley???

Jefferies 9 May 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

FYI …. It’s Gregg Jefferies*

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

he can’t spell “swung” correctly, either.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Evidently two nights on the pine did nothing to improve Delgado’s plate discipline.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

you can’t improve if you’re finished

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Kinda hard to sit and get your timming back. That is why it is so hard to be a pinch hitter.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:34 pm

what’s his excuse for the other 200 games he’s sucked?

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Hey I never said i liked Delgado. The other 200 AB’s have to do with being old. He’s just not got it anymore.
I was responding to the post commenting that the benching did not improve his pitch selection.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:19 pm

he had plenty of time last night to read his post AB diary entries on Brad Penny.

Just no excuse for swinging at a pitch like that. It’s as if Carlos decides he’s going to swing before the pitch regardless.

mrosey May 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm

that wasn’t just a bad at bat, that was horrific.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

great at bat Delgado, if that third strike was anymore in the dirt it’d be in China

Darryl Strawberry May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

That at bat almost looked like Delgado was trying to strikeout. I can’t believe how lost he just looked at the plate.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I am calling you out tonight. I am going to try and make you a new man.
For every negative post you make you MUST make 2 positive post.
I don’t really think that will improve your view of the Mets BUT it will be so hard for you to find positive things to say you will just stop posting in general. ;)

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

was anyone even surprised by delgado.it would have been shocking if he got on base.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Here we go again. Same old Delgado. The “feel Good” story we had over the last two days is slipping away with the “Human Rally Killer” Mr. Delgado.

Mr. Mets Butler May 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

How pathetic!

Greg_Jeffries May 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

easley
easley
easley
easley
easley

therealsandman May 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

del-god-no

rM teM May 29, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I’m starting to feel sorry for him. That’s how bad it’s gotten.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Don’t feel sory for, feel sory for the team.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I find it hard to feel sorry for a guy stealing 16 million dollars. Shoulda gave the curtain call if he wanted any slack

MetsFanInVegas May 29, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Same here. It’s time to release him. Sad thing is no other team will sign him because he’s finished. Time to retire Mr. Delgado.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Yankees may bite if he goes on waivers.

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 7:34 pm

are there any rumors floating about a new firstbaseman?

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Easley’s been terrible so far this year, too.

Delgado, sadly, is as good an option as we have against righthanded pitching.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:36 pm

You just said in a nut shell why this team is going to have a hard problem making the post seasopn this year if Delgado is the best we have at 1st base………………a power position.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I think with Reyes, Wright, Beltran, and Church playing well, they can overcome Delgado with their pitching. Anyone who came into this season actually thinking Delgado was going to turn back the clock was deluding themselves.

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 7:35 pm

honestly,i wouldnt mind tatis at first when church is back.

Michael.Fidler May 29, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Tatis last night got 1 hit last night, albeit the winning hit, but he was 1 for 5 last night. Matt Lindstrom (former Met) who throws 99 mph made Tatis look like a minor leaguer. Get off Delgados back, we have nowhere to go to get a bat (Scott Hatteberg hitting .175 or some crap). Who is there to bring up? There is no one proven we can put there. So get off his back. Also, the 16 million dollar crap wahh i dont feel sorry for him. He earned the money by hitting 400 plus HRs and 100 plus RBIs a season. If you wanna cry about his contract, contact his dumba** agent or talk to Mike Weiner or Don Fehr. It’s their fault he makes that kind of money

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:37 pm

The only good thing about Willie’s ass being in the frying pan is that eventually he’s going to come to the realization that it’s either kiss Delgado’s butt and go down in flames, or cut the dead weight and try to save his job.

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 7:38 pm

great point

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Self preservation will win out and Willie will bench Delgado if Omar doesn’t do it for him.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I still don’t believe it. I think Willie wanted to bench Delgado all along but did not feel comfortable doing it because of Omar AND because he was too afraid for his job. What would have happen if he was still affraid of losing his job and he benched Delgado and we kept losing? I think his thought process was that mgmt would think he was being unfair to Delgado and not trying to put his best lineup out there.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:45 pm

His best line-up IS with Delgado out.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:49 pm

I agree, however at the time I would have kept running him out there too because of lack of replacement I think at this point a platoon is the next step and then release.

gem779 May 29, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Loney is hitting poorly on the road and great at home. knock on wood.

Jefferies 9 May 29, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Connect Four …. That was a good game …

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 7:39 pm

this conversation between keith, gary, and ron has been classic. talking about roommates on road trips and connect 4

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:40 pm

They are definitely three of a kind.

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 7:40 pm

delgado is gone after the the season,i dont see why willie wouldnt bench him or he goes on the DL

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I personally think deep down inside Willie is hoping Delgado gets hurt and has to go on the DL. That would make his job that much easier.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I read on the Main Page that the Mets are thinking about leaving Pelfrey in the rotation and putting Vargas in the pen. I think I like Vargas in the pen in the Darren Oliver role but it does leave Perez and Pelfrey in the rotation. Both are very shaky and the Mets need 6 or 7 innings from their starters consistently to get on a real roll. Vargas seems to know how to control the game and that’s a trait that Pelfrey and perez have yet to demonstrate.

Any thoughts?

stickguy May 29, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Perez needs to stay in the rotation. IMO, Plefrey should go to AAA to work on learning how to pitch, and Vargas should stay in the rotation, and Muniz in the pen.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Agree. Pelfrey would be the most likely to go down. Although Perez can be awful at times I feel he’s more likely (capable) of throwing a good game wehre as Pelfrey is consistantly bad.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Are we really discussing moving a guy that won 15 games and had our lowest ERA last season to the bullpen?

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Not I. Pelfrey should be the odd man out.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Rather have Vargas as long-man in the bullpen. The Mets haven’t really had a solid one since Oliver and I want Pelfrey to really get a shot this year so we can get a better idea of what we got with him.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I just cant believe how quick people are to jump off the Perez ship. Yes think Perez is very inconsistant but he has the 2nd most talent on the staff. That alone makes him more worthy of trotting out there than Pelfrey or Vargas.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Vargas is just better right now than Pelfrey. We do not need a long man right now. We need fresh arms in the pen. Heilman can be a long man if needed. Our starters rarely go out early enough to need a true long man to pitch 3+ innings.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Perez may never win 15 games again but the issue isn’t putting Perez in the pen.

The Mets are planning, at this moment, to keep Pelfrey in the rotation and move Vargas to the pen. Which means Muniz goes down.

Although I think Vargas would be a great long man, I’m not sure if I still want Pelfrey and Perez as 4th and 5th starters when Pedro gets back because you don’t know what they are going to give you.

One shaky starter is enough when you need to get wins in bunches.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:01 pm

The Mets don’t have a guy who can go 4 or 5 innings in an emergency, they just don’t. All things being equal I’d rather have Vargas start, but with Pedro coming back, I’d rather just use the 5th spot to give Pelfrey time to work out his problems.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:02 pm

We don’t really know what the Mets have planned. If Vargas continues pitching well that would be silly.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:02 pm

How often do they need a guy to go 4 or 5 innings?

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Then you might as well cut Pelfrey because his confidence will be shot if he gets taken out of the rotation again.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 8:05 pm

You have a point there. Besides, Perez is most likely gone next season. Borris is going to ask way too much money.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:05 pm

ooooo, poor baby. You think his confidence would be bad enough going out and sucking each night. I don’t put any stock in that, either he can pitch or not. This is NY and we don’t have time right now to keep running Pelfrey out there to “learn” to pitch and protect his ego when there are better alternatives. It’s the same as the Delgado situation just reversing the ages. This is NY and the best player has to play.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:07 pm

I don’t think it’s worth it, you’re not replacing him with Juan Marichal, it’s Claudio Vargas.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:09 pm

It’s worth it if Pelfrey is pitching the way that he is. Vargas has good stuff and seems to be more consistant. I would at least rid him out.
If based on what we have seen we are counting on Pelfrey to be anymore than a #5 again next season we would be in trouble either way.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Agree, In a perfect world the best player should play, period. But we all know money comes into play in baseball and sports in general. If the best player (player who is performing the best) should play then Delgado should be riding the pine. The Mets will give him every single opportunity to prove he can still play if only because of the 16M he’s making this year. Trust me, if Delgado was just another player making next to nothing he would not be playing.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:11 pm

1 stat,Pelfrey WHIP 1.78, Vargas 1.04.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:11 pm

We can’t have a double standard. We want Easley and Tatis to play because they have shown fire and have earned that right over Delgado. But Pelfrey gets a pass?

We are going to go nuts when we have Pelfrey, Perez and Santana up against the Phillies and knowing we are only going to get one game.

Vargas has shown he can keep this team in games and that’s what you need in the back end of the rotation.

However, I do love the idea of a great long man. It’s an interesting debate.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I disagree, Delgado would still have been playing because he was the best option.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Can someone look and see how many times a starter has pitched 4 or less innings this season?

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Lets take last night for example. if Willie had a long man in the pen then he maybe he takes Perez out of the game after Beltran saves him in the 5th.

So thats your 4th starter, pitching with a lead, having his stuff together for all of 5 innings in a must win game.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:21 pm

You don’t have to have a long man come in in the 6th inning. That could have easily been Muniz or Smith then the same pen we used last night.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:28 pm

True but he may have brought him in the 5th if you knew he could get you to the 8th. Similar to how the Yankees used Ramiro Mendoza. Granted, that is American League but a long man can at times get you to the set up man instead of Willie trotting out 4 pitchers for four innings or Heilman pitching 2 innings.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:32 pm

To a guy who said it was a “double standard,” Tatis and Easley or old players, the point of playing Pelfrey is because he’s still young and can use this experience to grow as a potential top of the rotation starter. Completely different situation.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:34 pm

That just does not happen in the NL when you are down. I understand the idea of a long man but I just think its a wasted spot unless that guy is also a guy you use later in the game as well. Thus to me Heilman can do this just as well.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 8:35 pm

So Metsfan, we should be playing Evans at 1B?

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:41 pm

God, you people and your crappy analogies. First off, Evans is not a top prospect like Pelfrey. Second, you can move Vargas (who’s looking great right now, by the way) to a long-man position, while Delgado really has no place besides first base. The upside of Pelfrey is much higher than Evans.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I’m sorry metsfan119, I thought the point of playing certain players was because they give you a chance to win. Pelfrey currently is not doing that. Why not play the players(old or young) that helps us win?

Pelfrey can pitch in the minors and the Mets could still determine what he his based on his performance. Clearly, the majors has been a tough go-round for Pelfrey.

Keep in mind also that Pelfrey pitched a lot last year and was terrible most of the time and that trend has continued this season.

I agree that Pelfrey has great stuff but there is something missing and he cannot be relied on for wins.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 8:50 pm

By the way, Kuo is the Dodgers long man and he’s pitching in the 5th. Torre has him in there so he won’t use several pitchers in one game. It’s a nice option to have.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Normally, I’d agree with playing the players that best give you the chance to win. However, I think this is a special case. Pelfrey is 24 years old, he’s not going to be a prospect much longer, I think that whatever instant advantage you get pitching Vargas over Pelfrey in the 5 spot is not not enough to warrant sending Pelfrey back down and potentially killing his career for good. Let’s be honest, Vargas has a shoe the size of Texas about to drop, let the guy go into the bullpen as a long-man, if it’s August and Pelfrey still has made no progress, then send him down. I think it’s worth the gamble to let Pelfrey get as much major league experience as he can to see if he can be a young pitching contributor to the Mets (something far more invaluable in baseball than a journeyman starter).

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Granted, that makes sense but it makes sense for team that has 4 solid starters and is a few games over .500. The mets really don’t have the luxury right now to continue Pelfrey’s audition. Even the Yankees sent Kennedy down and went with Rasner because they knew Rasner could keep them in games.

Pelfrey has top of the rotation potential but the state of the team makes his starts must-win games and not a get-your-feet-wet learning experience.

Perez is already shaky, having two shaky starters is not ideal right now.

thebloggersbeat May 29, 2008 at 7:42 pm

We both know bloggers’ importance of wearing multiple hats, in addition to playing a New York style devils advocate; therefore, I’m very much so looking forward to tonites Game-1 versus Torre’s Dodgers.

The dramatic and encouraging win makes us believe that a positive turnaround is upon us. Nevertheless, similar to the importance of shutting down an opponent during their next at-bat following a Mets’ run-scoring inning—is a game after an emotional win. Thus, the Metropolitans have an important challenge ahead of them tonite against the Dodgers.

I believe their first come-from-behind win when trailing entering the ninth in 24-games speaks volumes. And, to follow-up with a win tonite would be inspiring. The game is huge, and I truly believe—in its own way—that it’s a must-win. I’m happy to say that I do expect a solid effort. In addition, I’m feeling like it’s time for Nick Evans to kick the 0-13 funk since his double-happy opening-day and begin building some confidence.

Meet the Mets – Meet the Mets. Let’s Go!

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:48 pm

rM teM May 29, 2008 at 7:49 pm

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I have a feeling Reyes is about to do something.

howellmetsfan May 29, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I think its painfully obvious that Vargas has to remain in the rotation when Petey comes back Tuesday and that Pelfrey needs to be sent down to try an recapture whatever he had that made everyone think he was a great prospect because honestly for parts of the last 3 years i havent seen anything that would even give a hint that he should be so highly touted!

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 8:00 pm

From what I’ve read Pelfrey had a pretty good curveball that he mixxed in with his above average fastball to keep hitters off balance. I think read he was averaging over 9 strike out per game. Then for some reason they made him stop throwing the curveball.

bluecapsonly May 29, 2008 at 8:00 pm

I find it strange that the Mets were so adamant about Jay horowitz wearing that orange blazer again, yet they come out in the horrible bruise caps after winning in the beautiful blue caps 2 nights in a row.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 8:22 pm

The bruise caps have to go!

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:30 pm

HOFMets57 May 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Hojo needs to close Delgado’s stance. His hips fly WAY too early, even on Penny’s 95 mph fastball. Simple adjustment goes along way in a game of inches…

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Someone on the SNY said ( I believe it was Keith) the reason he opened his stance so much (more than usual) is because he needs to cheat due to the loss of bat speed. He’s basically trying to cheat to catch up with the ball faster. That was Keith’s explanation.

bluecapsonly May 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm

woohoo, beltran cleared delgado, thats like clearing the pitcher these days, still is true even though he got a hit. pitcherrs get hits sometines too

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 8:17 pm

BTW, I’d love to get Nady back with the Mets.

Bah. Nady was hitting .160 with RISP when we traded him.

If his name were Bob instead of Xavier, nobody would want him.

Yes, Easley. It worked the previous past two nights.

ok guys, way to explain that before four runs scored!

(i’ll take them though!)

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 8:33 pm

dude, I’m totally with you, I switched over to The Office, and then the next thing I know Castillo is up. I was thinking, “damn, Vargas doesn’t fool around.”

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 8:32 pm

yeah they didn’t explain this either. or they did, but they weren’t on air yet.

ToastyJoe May 29, 2008 at 8:36 pm

That was SO weird. SNY did a FULL COMMERCIAL BREAK after the Vargas “groundout,” only to cut back and suddenly there’s 2 Mets on base. I was so confused.

Geoffrey May 29, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Once the local cable operators take the commercials, they don’t cut out of it, even if SNY cuts out of their own break early. That’s why it looked like we caught Keith in the middle of a sentence.

I was on the phone and casually paying attention to the game… I saw the double play, then Vargas grounding out to end the inning and then they went to a break. A few minutes later, they’re back just as Castillo hits with two on base and they’re still in the bottom of the 4th… and the SNY scoreboard graphic looked different (why does that keep changing?).

I came on here to find out if I was imagining things… glad I wasn’t the only one who was confused.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Wow…best interruption of ads to see a cather’s interference extending an inning….ever!

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 8:32 pm

You know, I get the point of sponsor’s commercials, but COME ON. Can they just cut back to the game when there’s a play going on ?????

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:44 pm

what are you talking about?..I just bought 2 year supply of proceed during that commercial break.

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Catcher’s interference on the Vargas Groundout.

I just noticed that! LOL Actually it sounds better that way reagrding Kent! lol.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 8:50 pm

What?!?!!?

You ever hear of Rogers Hornsby?

I could probably think of at least 10 2nd baseman I would rather have contribute to my offense than Jeff Kent. He’s a great hitter, but c’mon.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 8:53 pm

I’m speaking just strictly going by the numbers. More Homeruns and RBIs than any other in that position. That alone gets him into the Hall. I love Rogers Hornsby! In my opinion I’m with you, I believe Rogers was the greatest. But numbers wise, Kent is tops on the list.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:10 pm

he is the best POWER hitting 2nd baseman. not the best offensive 2nd baseman. more to ofense than just hitting. Kent is a bad baserunner and has no speed.

Regardless I’d still take Hornsby, Sandberg, Morgan, Robinson, and Alomar (cringe) over him. to name a few.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Rogers Hornsby

Hits…………………………….. 2,930
.AVG……………………………..358
OBP……………………………..434
SLG………………………………577
HR………………………………..301
RBI………………………………1,584
RUNS……………………………1,579
SB……………………………….135

Pretty incredible.

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 9:14 pm

hornsby played in a different era when the double play was not emphasized (and also when i believe there were fewer lefthanded hitters) so defense at second base was not emphasized.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:18 pm

yeah, but this convo is specifically about offense.

if you throw defense into the equation, Jeff kent falls further down the list.

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 8:38 pm

SNY really totally effed up there. on DVR you can see vargas hanging out around first strangely before the cut to commercial. then like 3 or 4 spots run, and when it comes back the booth is in mid sentence a full batter later with no mention of the interference or the interruption.

really terrible job.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 8:45 pm

On my feed, they came back in time for Jose and the explanation of catcher’s interference.

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 8:49 pm

DUDE, I HAD dropped it – if you actually read this thread, some fools intimated that all the “fire Willie” people had left.

And, just for good measure: fire Willie! ;-)

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I know you had, read the post below. I was giving you credit for dropping it.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Gip….I turned the page. I am now rooting for Willie. Mainly b/c we all know it will take a big losing streak for him to go, and we don’t want that. But also b/c he is in survival mode and finally doing the things he should have been doing as far back as last summer. I love the benching Delgado move as well as playing the hungry subs.

NadyFan May 29, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Please, Please don’t compare Delgado to Big Papi! Are you kidding me?!

Big Papi is probably one of the best if not the best clutch hitter in the game. The guy always comes up with a big hit when his team needs it most.

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Come on Man go back and Look at Delgado’s Stats and See what he has done in his prime… Look at the Numbers… HOF numbers… Come on Guys show some respect to Delgado, he was a really dangerous power hitter in his prime… LETS GO METS>>>

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Wow, a Feliciano sighting

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I wish Willie had continue to forget about him. He has good numbers this year but they are really misleading.

Dafatone80 May 29, 2008 at 9:14 pm

And pitch who?

We can’t not use guys in the pen.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:20 pm

I know. He should have been used. I just don’t think he has been right for a while now.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

It figures this would be the game the Dodgers broke out of their offensive slump.

adam900 May 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

I can see a tie game coming, WOW!!!!!!

HOFMets57 May 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Here we go, Pedro…

Uh-oh…

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

dang it… do we take out pedro?

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Carlos Muniz??? really????

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Big GAme Boys don’t need a let down after a Great Win last night… Keep the train rolling baby>>>>>>>>>

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:13 pm

oh brother. feliciano has one job to do and he absolutely fails.

only bright note: this team doesn’t score runs, so don’t expect much from them tomorrow.

but we need to get out of this inning and tack on at least one more.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Willie made the right decision to bring in a lefty for a lefty. Pedro just didn’t make pitches.

mrosey May 29, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Nice pitch. All right. Let’s get some insurance.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Great job in tight spot my Muniz.

Keep Vargas in rotation, send Pelf to AAA, keep Muniz in pen.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Agree 100%. Bringing back points guy +10000

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 9:17 pm

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Good pitch, although i’m pretty sure i saw schneider call for a fastball away. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. If he was gonna miss, that was a good spot to do so.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:18 pm

why can’t the Mets hit this guy?

dominicanboy08 May 29, 2008 at 9:19 pm

sosa just signed with the astros, since he left the bullpen has been outstanding!!!…..

eligoodrich May 29, 2008 at 9:22 pm

yea let him go there and throw his poor slider and get rocked.our bullpen is coming together, remember in ‘06. our bullpen was the best

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I can’t wait till I go back to NY… I’m in LA southern california area and trust me People this Place Sucks…. LETS GO METS>>>

eligoodrich May 29, 2008 at 9:22 pm

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 9:24 pm

nice gidp castillo

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Can’t be too much on him after the past 2 games. I guess some hatred will never die.

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:24 pm

what the kuo?

tinathemetsgrl May 29, 2008 at 9:24 pm

LMAO. The Mets must find a way to trade for Hung Chi Kuo.

The Glider May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

The most honorable Hung Chi Kuo san.

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

seriously, this guy has given us trouble ever since 2006, it’s borderline ridiculous.

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:35 pm

AND Blake DeWitt

kendychavez May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

SNY could run commercials of puppies being kicked and it would bother me less than these constant awful Jeter commercials

eligoodrich May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

ha i agree, why would they do that to us.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Well, at least make it kittens.

eligoodrich May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Its Show time

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm

To me that’s on Willie and Reyes. I know that Castillo sucks sometimes but why is Reyes not stealing or Willie not calling a hit an run. Castillo does not strike out. If Reyes is at 2nd then that ball moves the runner over just like it should have. Again, Castillo has to do more but where is the aggressiveness there?

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 9:28 pm

totally agree, there should be a lot more movement with the bat in Castillo’s hands, especially with Reyes on base. Either let Reyes steal, or hit and run. I know Castillo doubled earlier, but the smart play is a hit and run there.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I have seen this over and over, if you are not going to use Castillo as a #2 hitter then there is no reason for him to be there. Castillo keeps taking pitches for Reyes to steal and he just keeps standing there. Why would you not at least hit and run with Castillo every time. It’s not like he is going to line out.

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 9:32 pm

yeah, i mean, one out, castilo at the dish, reyes at 1st, David Wright on deck who is hitting great this game. At the least, you get Dwright up with a man on. Willie needs to realize that Castillo’s wheels ain’t what they used to be and he’s not going to be able to beat out all these DP’s. Hit and run with the man, he’s going to put the bat on the ball, we all know that much.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:33 pm

hold on. what about your lineup earlier today that had Castillo batting 8th against Righties, and 2nd against lefties?

you had me there, TR. Please don’t take it back. that would crush me.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Exactlly. Again, Castillo has to be able to do more and thats on him but you have to be more aggressive.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Danny I still agree that in a perfect world that Castillo would be a better 8 hitter against RHP. But that is assuming that Church is healthy AND Alou or we get Ibanez.
My point was that IF he is going to bat 2nd you have to use him as a #2 hitter and play aggressive infront of him.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:41 pm

100.1% agreement.

now don’t get all warm and fuzzy on me.

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 9:28 pm

we get the point, mrs. castillo

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Why is that anyone that supports another view point has to be insulted? Are you really Dykstra and Strawberry’s love child. Ha ha ha look at me, I am so funny.

dykstraw May 29, 2008 at 9:53 pm

who told you?

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:56 pm

TRIVIA:

who did Lenny hit his first MLB HR against?

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Against the Reds but I can’t remember the pitcher.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Soto…in his second AB of the game. MLB debute.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Good ole Mario Soto. Talk about a guy that would have benefited from pitching in today’s game. The Reds killed him with innings. I think he had something like 20 CG’s one year and near 300 innings. Could you imagine something like that today?

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:33 pm

this is why the 100 pitch count is complete BS.

pitchers nowadays are coddled way too much. it’s maddening. doesn’t have to be how the Reds were with Mario, but it doesn’t need to be so automativ at 100 pitches either.

The Glider May 29, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Castillo has been hitting lately. Maybe the hit and run is the play to call?

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:29 pm

i agree

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

the hit and run is the play right there.

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:28 pm

LEts go ShowStopper>>>

VegasMet May 29, 2008 at 10:04 pm

In an open message to Show…

I’m sorry…I was wrong. You must have had injury issues last year, and you are a great lefty arm out of the pen.

I’m very happy to have you on our team… and to Omar too… We idiots over here have no business questioning your signing him to a 2-yr deal.

Great effort tonight, and most of your apperarances this season. You are a Met…

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

the greatest SHO on earth!

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

good job, Show

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Go Show !

It’s that bag of candy Kevin B. was talking about. Bullpen’s secret weapon…..

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Has Scott Schoenweis become….dare I say…..RELIABLE?!?!??

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Ok so next inning who pitches? I would assume sanchez isn’t available as i believe he pitched in two straight games and also threw two innings tonight. Heilman did as well. If we don’t have to pinch hit for him, i guess we leave scho in to face pierre and eithier, and then go to smith.

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:35 pm

yeah, gotta keep in show for now to face the lefties and then have smith ready

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Sorry i meant to say sanchez threw two innings last night.

stickguy May 29, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Nice Schoe. Let him have the 8th too. The pen was worked hard last game.

Maybe they can blow it open and pile on a few more runs in the 7th to take the pressure off.

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Beautiful AB Beltran.

Delgado’s about vs Beimel should result in either:

a) a weak pop-up on the first pitch
b) a strikeout on a low breakingball
c) a strikeout on a high fastball
d) a single to left

1-4 aint bad

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Carlos selects d)

KinersKornerman May 29, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Hey are they playing the Curly Shuffle again at Shea? That’s the best news I’ve heard all day.

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 9:38 pm

I think Bill R. is going to get us through this guys, just watch.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:40 pm

so do you buy or grow it yourself?

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:45 pm

A more devilish hallucinogen is at work here.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Why are people cheering Joe Torre? Eff him.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:41 pm

I wouldn’t go that far, but I agree, I could care less about the guy

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

EW! Why in the name of God is Torre getting a “nice reception”? At Shea???!???

Ew. Horrible job by those fans.

darkstar73 May 29, 2008 at 9:45 pm

they’re not all real Met fans, they’re fair weather fans

ParisWilponCOO May 29, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I was at the game where he became a “player/manager”. To me, he will always be a Met.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:09 pm

….so you’re the one.

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:40 pm

e) a single to right!

my only other option was delgado hits a deep fly ball but it hits a pigeon like pedro cerrano in major league.

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Way to go Delgado>>>>

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Delgado with two nice defensive plays, 2-3 at the dish. He has a better energy tonight.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Where the hell was that a minute ago with Reyes on base? Good job by Beltran.

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

ENDY! ENDY! ENDY!

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Whatever it takes. Go Endy !!

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

God i love the back-up lineup sh*t!!!

Willie….you’re doing good, my man.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Good ole Endy

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

2 out Rbi’s? Tack on runs. Great bullpen work. Delgado diving at first base and hitting lefties? Who are these guys?

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:45 pm

hahaha – we’re in an alternate universe. And I like this one better…..

donwkim79 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

The Legend Of Endy Chavez LIVES On>>>>

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm

I’d still bench Delgado against lefties

ParisWilponCOO May 29, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I’d still trade him to Toronto for Frank Thomas” leftover socks

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Nice to tack on a run there.

teufelshuffle86 May 29, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Great hustle!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Whoo Hoo !!!!

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:47 pm

2 things

1) it feels like this is schneiders first hit in forever
2) bimel is on the all-ugly team
3) scho deserve this at bat

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:47 pm

thats 3 things oops

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:49 pm

again…good job Willie letting Show bat here. keep the lefty in there against this lineup and a 4 run lead. plus you save the arm.

Plus we get to see the high comedy “WTF!!..I was just called back for a relief pitcher!!!” face from Evans in the dugout.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:50 pm

* plus you save the arms (as in bullpen)

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Bill R. is a great manager, look at these moves – that old guy Willie Randolph would never have done this!

stickguy May 29, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Insurance runs. Just like I asked for.

Even better is the shot of Torre in the dugout, looking like he has gas pains.

Mingo May 29, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Joe always looks like that.

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:52 pm

juan pierre is 9

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Show dawg is somethin else these days

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Bill “all smiles” R. with the timely pull – what a good manager!

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Did they show the catchers interference again?

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Not that I saw on SNY. Just mentioned it again about being a huge part of the that 4 run inning….

playmaker3128 May 29, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Quick question. Correct me if i’m wrong. I know scho throws that slider, but his fastball, when he’s going good isn’t he known to get alot of ground balls with it as it has some sink?

gdfther412 May 29, 2008 at 9:55 pm

clapp,clap,clap

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Today’s Metsblog “Most obscure comment” award.

That is seriously the last thing I would ever expect you to say.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Hey man I am well rounded man. What do you want to talk about next? Politics? Global warming?

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:20 pm

i think we kill eachother enough over the topic baseball.

Besides, politics is a crapshoot and Global warming is a myth contrived by pinko liberal nutcases.

but hey, that’s just one man’s opinion.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Wow, we have much more in common than I thought. Maybe we should have been discussing global warming.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:35 pm

yep. this is getting a bit scary.

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 9:55 pm

no need to overmanage here, willie. have we forgiven schoenweis for the 2007 debacle?

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 9:56 pm

I know matchups there but why take him out there?

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 9:58 pm

i was thinking the same thing.

.500 baseball here we come

****guy knocking on wood

Koko May 29, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Baby Steps. . .

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 10:01 pm

i hate to be that pessimistic bastard but…

i hate the fact this if we will we’ll only be at .500, when that was our “rock bottom” point last week

oh well, lets go mets!

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:12 pm

yeah….but I was more excited about this game with them 1 game under .500, than I was a few weeks ago with them 5 games above .500.

odd.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Not odd at all, we have been playing good baseball. The Willie issue is put to bed for now. Delgado has been benched. Tatis and the bench has been playing great. Bullpen has been great. We have come from behind. Delgado is playing with fire and 1-4 are starting to hit, yes even Castillo is starting to hit.
There is a lot to HOPE for at this point, instead of waiting for the bottom to fall out.

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:21 pm

and fun. they are having fun, it appears. that’s important.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Well truthfully being a coach myself there is absolutely no fun in losing. When you win you have fun.

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 10:02 pm

THAT’S THREE BABY!!!!! A SLAP TRICK, DEDICATED TO BILL R. !!!!!

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 10:04 pm

does joe torre enjoy managing? you wouldnt think so

WestCoastMets_since86 May 29, 2008 at 10:05 pm

man Slappy McSingle is slappin some mcsingles tonight.

Can’t wait till we get Ryan Synagogue back in there!
(props to Ryan Synagogue – love that!)

Not over yet in the 8th, but looking like another solid Mets win. Vargas has been everything you could ask for, and then some.

LETS GO METS!

EliPorter May 29, 2008 at 10:05 pm

these conversations between ron keith and gary get more and more random- “you take route 10″

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Well, I-10 is the major Interstate to the Inland Empire. The fact they didn’t know what the Insland Empire is….was funny.

DMAT89 May 29, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Vargas has been everything you could ask for, and then some????

Guy almost blew a 6 run lead, and probably would of if he had stayed in.

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:12 pm

He’s a number 5 starter.

Koko May 29, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Remember Vargas is the 5th starter and he has out pitched most 5th starters. He’s out pitched the Mets 4th starter (Pelfry) so far too.

therealsandman May 29, 2008 at 10:13 pm

and arent they going 2 send down vargas since pedro is taking his spot next week. i dont see how you cannot send pelfrey to the bullpen or down to AAA.

santana
maine
perez
pedro
vargas

therealsince86 May 29, 2008 at 10:15 pm

No decision has been made yet that I am aware of.

Koko May 29, 2008 at 10:16 pm

I agree.

Go with the guy that gives the Mets the best shot to win a game and Vargas is that guy right now.

I think Pelfry should go to AAA, not the pen, and get a few starts with no real pressure.

gipper82475 May 29, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Vargas has no options, he’d be picked up by another team. They are talking keeping Pelf in the rotation, putting Vargas in pen and sending Muniaz down. Consensus on Metsblog is that would be stupid and instead they should send Pelf to AAA, keep Vargas in rotation and Muniz in pen.

therealsandman May 29, 2008 at 10:18 pm

totally agree

stickguy May 29, 2008 at 10:09 pm

OK Smith, finish this baby out.

I think that Wade kid threw more breaking balls this inning than the entire Mets staff ahs all year. Looks like other teams still believe in the curve ball!

dominicanboy08 May 29, 2008 at 10:13 pm

now that you say that, I think we dont have a pitcher that throws a 12-6 curve, do we?

Koko May 29, 2008 at 10:17 pm

We sort of did until Guru Jacket told Pelfry to stop throwing his curve. . .

stickguy May 29, 2008 at 10:18 pm

best I can tell, Pedro and Duque (remember him?) are the only curves, at least from the starters, and I can’t think of any in the pen either.

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Oh yeah, Smitty baby. Way to finish !!

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 10:16 pm

eck, I haven’t seen the Chavez catch since it’s happened. It just makes me sick to relive that game

Danny1986 May 29, 2008 at 10:17 pm

i second that. have yet to even see the replay.

that, and the GMEN’s botched FG attempt in the 2003 WC against SF. 2 plays I have only seen once, and as they happened.

metsfan119 May 29, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Nice, bullpen is coming through

Ludacrispat May 29, 2008 at 10:17 pm

3 wins in a row!
bats heating up!
bullpen great!
only 4 out of first!

let’s get ‘em.

PS- there are 110 baseball games left! lets go 67-43 and win this division!

MetsFan4Decades May 29, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I hope now Maz explains that whole catcher’s interference play – since I missed it. That allowed those 4 runs to score and was a big play….

Slappy McSingleton May 29, 2008 at 10:19 pm

AND BILL R. LEADS US TO ANOTHER WIN!! THAT’S A STREAK BABY, BILL R. IS THE MAN!!

(Show Dawg and That Kid Smith are nasty as well)

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I like the BILL R.

Metdamage May 29, 2008 at 10:25 pm

For now anyway

VelvetFoot May 29, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Vargas did a pretty good job too.

VegasMet May 29, 2008 at 10:25 pm

And don’t overlook Muniz comin’ in with a 4-pitch punchout with the game on the line…Nice!
