Note: Schoeneweis on WFAN at 12:15 pm

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am

Scott Schoeneweis will be a guest today at 12:15 during WFAN’s mid-day show.

Schoeneweis has not allowed a run 20 of his 23 appearances this season.

i’m happy for schoeneweis…this is a tough town, as it should be…we expect a lot…he struggled, the fans booed, but he took it on, shook it off, and is now pitching well…so, good for him

Quote: Willie was Illin’

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 9:39 am

Following last night’s game, SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt asked Willie Randolph, “It seems like all the things that were illing this club…it’s like they’ve all come together, is it just timing,” to which Randolph smiled, laughed and asked, “Illing?  Is that like the hip-hop term, illin’.  You’re illin’, man.”

Burkhardt, clearly embarrassed, and speaking up over his fellow reporters, who were all laughing as well, said with a smile, “I’m trying to be a rapper at the same time, what can I tell you.”

Randolph, ready to answer the question, continued by saying, “Uhh, well, yeah, we been illin’ for a while,” which was followed by even more laughter from reporters.

great moment…in fact, burkhardt should be complimented for accidentally lightening the mood…nice work…

…at any rate, what a difference a few days make, right…

…oh, and kevin, peace…and word to your mother…

Quote: Church Blames Church

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 9:15 am

Ryan Church told reporters yesterday that he has no problem with the way the Mets have handled his recovery from a recent concussion, during which he has not been put on the disabled list has pinch hit on three occasions while being unable to start due to dizziness.

In fact, according to Church, he probably should not have pushed himself so hard, thus potentially making matters worse.

Church, talking to reporters from the dugout at Shea, prior to yesterday’s game, said:

“They didn’t do anything wrong…When it came down to it, they asked.  I was the final say and I told them, basically, I couldn’t go out on the field and play, but I could pinch-hit.  I told them all it takes is one swing to help this team out…That’s the toughest thing for me to sit here and not be able to chip in and help.  That’s where I think I really got caught up in it.”

if he’s telling the Mets he can pinch hit, i understand them wanting to keep him accessible – seeing as he’s been one of their best hitters…

…that said, it would have been nice to have the additional, full-time player on the roster, especially last week when all hell was breaking loose…

…this was mishandled, if for no other reason than it seems odd to me that church is getting the ‘final say,’ because, a) he is not a doctor, and b) he isn’t team’s general manager…

Though he is still ‘a little woozy,’ Church played catch in the outfield in Shea Stadium before yesterday’s game, and, according to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, looked much better while talking to reporters than he had earlier in the week.

According to other reports, Church will return to the lineup two days after being diagnosed as ‘symptom-free’ by team doctors.

Quote: Nice Job, Vargie, Enjoy the Bullpen

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 8:45 am

Last night in a win over the Dodgers, Claudio Vargas allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one through 5.2 innings pitched.

He is 2–2 in four starts with the Mets, with a 4.50 ERA.

Willie Randolph, on Vargas, while speaking to reporters following last night’s win, said:

“Vargie did another nice job for us.  You know, he made a couple mistakes, but he’s done exactly what we wanted him to do.  It was a great pick up by Omar to add him to the staff.  He’s experienced, he’s a cool customer.”

Yesterday, at his blog for Newsday, David Lennon wrote that, when Pedro Martinez returns next week, the Mets may keep Mike Pelfrey in the rotation and move Vargas to long relief.

…i worry, because vargas seems to pitch to contact…which, as a reliever, could be a problem…we’ll see…i guess if he is used as a long reliever, it could work…

By the way, in Pelfrey’s last seven starts, the Mets are 0–7, during which he is 0–6 with a 6.70 ERA while allowing - get this - 73 base runners in 36 innings pitched.

…i totally agree, matt…vargas is better suited to remain in the rotation…i would love to see what pelfrey can give us out of the bullpen…i believe his stuff is better suited for 1-2 innings right now…you never know, maybe being a reliever is his calling…

Nice: Thank You, Russell

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 8:29 am

Last night, with two outs, the Mets up 2–0, and with Claudio Vargas at the plate, the umpire called catcher’s interference on Russell Martin during a swing that produced a ground ball from Vargas that would have ended the inning.  Instead, Vargas was rewarded first base and the inning was allowed to continue.

Jose Reyes then followed with a single, Luis Castillo hit an RBI double and David Wright hit a two-run home run to give the Mets a 6-0 lead.

Martin, as quoted by the Associated Press:

“I should have known he has a long swing like that.  Take away that blunder that I had, it’s a different ballgame.  I take responsibility for that.”

man, it really is the little things in baseball…i mean, think about it, the Mets won last night, three in a row, we’re talking returned energy, happiness, glee, etc, yet if the Mets do not get that call last night, which was accurate by the way, and then, because the game is closer, end up losing, today is probably a whole different narrative about how the Mets have issues, can’t sustain a winning streak, etc…what a delicate game

Note: David Wright and his Two-Run Homers

by Matthew Cerrone on May 30th, 2008 at 8:16 am

In last night’s win against the Dodgers, David Wright hit two two-run home runs, both with two outs.

both home runs were off of 93–mph fastballs…both hits were no-doubters

Wright is currently on pace to hit .280 with roughly 30 home runs, 120 RBI and 20 stolen bases for the season.

Following the game, Wright told Kevin Burkhardt on SNY that the team is more relaxed now that many of the off-field distractions are in the past, adding, “Now we can just go out and play baseball, which is what we love to do.”

Lastly, in post to his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin reveals to Wright that the third baseman is ‘old,’ at least when compared to tonight’s starter for the Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw, who was 16 years old when Wright broke in to the big leagues.
