Quote: Willie was Illin’
By Matthew Cerrone - May 30, 2008 9:39 am

Following last night’s game, SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt asked Willie Randolph, “It seems like all the things that were illing this club…it’s like they’ve all come together, is it just timing,” to which Randolph smiled, laughed and asked, “Illing?  Is that like the hip-hop term, illin’.  You’re illin’, man.”

Burkhardt, clearly embarrassed, and speaking up over his fellow reporters, who were all laughing as well, said with a smile, “I’m trying to be a rapper at the same time, what can I tell you.”

Randolph, ready to answer the question, continued by saying, “Uhh, well, yeah, we been illin’ for a while,” which was followed by even more laughter from reporters.

great moment…in fact, burkhardt should be complimented for accidentally lightening the mood…nice work…

…at any rate, what a difference a few days make, right…

…oh, and kevin, peace…and word to your mother…

I love the stories/questions/rapport Kevin B. brings to this broadcast team. He isn’t even remotely obnoxious as some of these other broadcasters are. Does a good job too of not reporting on the same thing night after night and not asking the same questions over and over - like some do.
He’s got an upbeat personality but is also honest/forthright when asked a question or asked for his opinion.

    Good job! Keep it coming….

    • Castillo643 says:

Agreed, Burkhardt is another piece of that puzzle that makes the Mets SNY broadcasting crew great.

Gary and KB are lifelong Mets fans that truly love what they do, and the team they are working with. Keith and Ron are members of a Mets team that will always be darlings (no pun intended) to Mets fans, regardless of any success we might have down the road.

Plus, while all baseball broadcasting crews are homers - including ours, they have no problem complimenting another team and criticizing the Mets……the dissapointment in Cohen’s voice heard over the past few weeks and the end of 2007 pretty much spoke for all of us.

    • jamie says:

agree wholeheartedly…only a matter of time til he moves on to bigger and better things.

Vanilla Ice on Metsblog, now I have seen it all…

Totally accidental by KB, but this was actually pretty funny. Kudos to Willie for playing it off so well, smooth as ever.

      ny back to willin

i love the “yeah we been illin for a while” line

      • mikey_FF says:

Yeah me too … I also like the “it’s good to see Delgado get his uniform dirty” line that Willie came out with too!

        • Alban says:

Agree. I loved the dirty uniform line from Willie. I hope Delgado keeps playing hard nosed baseball and gives the laundry guy something to do.

        • What was more interesting was that Willie said “His uniform has been pretty clean lately.” Don’t think he was talking about the 2 days off. Sounded like a knock against Delgado to me.

        • Alban says:

Yeah. I caught that too. I liked that he was implying that Delgado WASN’T doing enough… but was quick to say that he is NOW doing more and contributing. So that was good to see too.

          Delgado… the team player!

        • jamie says:

I agree, FAH, and frankly I was happy to hear it.

        • mikey_FF says:

Agreed 100% … I was happy too and it’s about time.

        • Constnza81V2.0 says:

The Times had a quote from Delgado in response to the Willie knock that said, “I’m not going to dive just to dive,” so yeah — I’m pretty sure that was a subtle jab and Delgado remains prickly. It sounds as if Delgado knows he’s being scapegoated here and doesn’t want to deal with it. I just hope he doesn’t go all Bobby Bo on the media.

Next thing you know, K-Burk will be “rollin’, in his 5 point 0, with the rag top down so his hair can blow”

    I can’t believe I remember that . . .

  8. EliPorter says:

    check this out:

last night, the mets 1-5 hitters went

    11-21, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 7 runs

if i was willie, id be in a pretty good mood over that

  9. jamie says:

I’d like to thinnk that if he applied himself, Kevin could do waaayy better than vanilla ice.

  10. Willie seems so much more natural, relaxed and happy in his post-game interviews ever since the meeting with the Wilpons. Somehow it has liberated him.

Don’t know what went on in that meeting but whatever it was, it seems to have done everyone a world of good. Except for NY Cuban, perhaps. But since his self-exile from Metsblog, the Mets are 3-0! Stay away, Cuban!

    • mikey_FF says:

It’s true, I said the same thing yesterday. Willie looks like he just decided to be himself and whatever happens happens. I like it.

      • The change in demeanor is remarkable. One would think that after such a meeting he would be walking on eggshells and looking over his shoulder 24/7. That he would be sullen and on edge, and that the countdown to an eventual mid-season firing was inevitable. I even envisioned the team remaining in its funk. But things are totally different and unexpected.

        • mikey_FF says:

Yeah I recall Heyman saying on the radio that the Wilpons told him they want to see more emotion from him. I think part of it is that and part of it is maybe they told him to play the best players regardless of salary.

      • jamie says:

I don’t know if you guys read joel sherman’s column in the post, but it was pretty interesting. He says willie essentially got permission to treat everyone the same, regardless of salary/history/status.

        • mikey_FF says:

I didn’t read that but that’s what it seems like. If that is the case, how refreshing that is. Letting salaries dictate roles on a team can only do harm.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

He didn’t have “permission” before???? Yikes. What kind of idiotic policy hamstrings the manager like that?

        • mikey_FF says:

Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know if it was a permission thing … of if he just assumed they wanted that … or if it was his decision in the first place. I don’t know the answer to any of that but it’s good to see that SOMEONE is seeing the light.

        • jamie says:

I think it’s probably a pretty common dilemma in baseball: manager may want to play the best guy, but the vet feels like he’s earned his status, even though he’s not performing up to par. I agree it’s pretty dumb that it might be true, but I can see how it could be.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Bottom line, moving forward, is that if Zito needs to go to the bullpen, you send him to the bullpen. In other words, playing time should be determined by things that happen ON the field. . . unless you’re falling down stairs, or some such. . . .

        • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Fact is, there are very few big league clubs that like seeing a player with a $15 million contract rot on the bench, even if it’s deserving. It’s why the Yanks play Giambi and Damon every day, why the Dodgers will play Andruw Jones when he gets off the DL, why the Giants will keep starting Barry Zito…..

        • It’s really unclear. But it does appear that prior to the meeting he felt he couldn’t just bench Delgado if he felt like it.

As for the Wilpons telling him to show more emotion, you can’t fake that. He either feels it or he doesn’t. So I’m not sure his livelier attitude is a result of an edict from the Wilpons or simply comes out of a new found freedom.

And, btw, did anyone else take note of how dead and emotionless Torre looked last night? Hmmm.

        • jamie says:

tmu, agree, but I really doubt that the manager made that decision on his own, per constnza’s post.

        • theperfectgame says:

I think as little of Johnny Damon as the next guy, but he’s actually having a pretty solid year.

        • m00kie says:

          torre looked miserable last night.

      • Only1311DaysLeft says:

Who is this Willie guy you’re talking about? I thought it was Bill R.

  11. murpheeee says:

I think he deserves to be renamed after that….K-Burx maybe?

  12. zen says:

    …straight out of westchester, burkhardt

    is a brotha that’ll buy yo’ mother flowers;
and will make ya sister paper mache towers.

  13. krumbledkookie says:

Burkhardt does a great job, and I almost feel bad for him being so embarrassed.

    Almost…

…but that whole exchange is way too funny.

  14. exteriorhedisonmouse says:

I can think of no one better to remix “Let’s Get Metsmerized.”

  15. toomanyuniforms says:

I’m embarrassed — I thought at first glance that that was a picture of Morrissey. . . . Yikes.

    • beltran the warrior says:

leave morrissey alone. since the smiths is/are my favourite band ever, i will take offense to any negative mention of the last great rock icon.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

I was actually kind of criticizing myself for mistaking Vanilla Ice for a solid musician, which I thought was amusing.

“Last great rock icon” is a little strong, but that’s a debate for another blog. I like me some Smiths.

  16. metsarebest says:

i told everyone to just relax since it is only may and that willie randolph was not going to be fired and i was made fun of for being too positive but look where we are at today !!!!!!!!
we are undefeated since the first full day willie could manage after the press conference where omar officially told everyone that willie randolph has the support of him and the owner !!!!!!!
does anyone have a problem with UNDEFEATED ???????
the only thing i object to is some of the same people who have been down on the mets are now enjoying their success these are the fakest fans of all and are not really mets fans !!!!!!!!!
SEE YOU IN THE PLAYOFFS because this team is going to rocket to first place in the next few days and NEVER LOOK BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Wow. That redifines spin. Win three games and all of a sudden we’re “undefeated” — in ALL CAPS, no less! Eh, .500, 1.000, what’s the difference, right??

And then the idea that if you thought firing Willie would be best for the team, you’re not a “real fan” and shouldn’t enjoy victories? Absolute horse-stuff.

      NEXT!

    • You mean we are undefeated with Bill R. as our manager.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

I see that you are back.

  17. Jova1931 says:

Funny how Willie is getting praised now for his demeanor and attitude, where 5 days ago he was getting killed for it. Winning solves a lot.

  18. Matt, you’ve got it all wrong -

Willie Randolph is our old manager, stone-faced, no emotion, and not a team leader.

Now, we have BILL R. !!!! He is absolutely killin it on the mic, and his players are responding - Bill R drinks champagne for breakfast!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      Um. No.

    • zen says:

when i read your “bill r.” comments it makes me want to play in traffic with a blind-fold on while chewing tin foil.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s kind of pathetic. Nicknames should be spontaneous. Did someone in another thread screw up and give this guy some positive feedback?

        • What are you even talking about - this nickname was spontaneous, just because you didn’t start it or see it first on the internet doesn’t mean it’s not good. Willie Randolph sucked, and Bill R. has been doin a great job.

If you like Bill R. show some love, and if not thats fine, but it’s hilarious you are getting irritated at not even a blog post, but a comment on one. It’s summer buddy, lighten up and enjoy some baseball.!

          LETS GO METS!!
          LETS GO BILL R. !!!!!!!!!!!

        • toomanyuniforms says:

OH yeah — I’m jealous because I didn’t christen the Bill R. nickname.

I just need to mull this one for a while. . . .

Hooboy. . . . This might be a long summer.

        • Flushing_is_Burning says:

he won’t stop. It’s been like this the past few days.

        • mrose says:

Slappy, you really do try too hard to be funny…

Most of us just converse and sometimes you have a good zing….other than that…relax, even make your nickname that isn’t so glaring at an attempt to be funny too

        • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s not the nickname, as much as the incessant campaigning for its adoption. Slappy and Bill R need a week at the beach and a couple of cold drinks in coconuts.

  19. Danny1986 says:

Run DMC should get the props on this one, not Vanilla Ice.

  20. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

word to your mother….I must admit i was a vanilla ice fan back in my jersey days growing up…

    • gomets6091 says:

      • gomets6091 says:

before I get flamed for that, I should note that I’m kidding…I love Vanilla Ice.

  21. boomingranny says:

Any of you seen this skit of Jim Carey portraying Ice on In Living Color? Priceless!

    “Go Burkhardt…work it out!”

  23. Mr. Bananagrabber says:

Actually, I think Run DMC, not Vanilla Ice, was illin’. Kevin Burkhardt would be illin’ if, after last night’s game, he asked David Wright how it felt to score two touchdowns.

Or if he was in Kentucky Fried and ordered small fries, Big Mac!

  24. terpz06 says:

and all the managers say he’s pretty fly for a white guy

  25. It sounds like Willie hungout too much with Lastings Milledge.
