In his latest installment of Rumblings & Grumblings on ESPN.com, Jayson Stark discusses how the Mets clubhouse sorely misses Jose Valentin.
Stark quotes a baseball insider as explaining:
“Not having Jose Valentin might be the biggest difference between this team and the 2006 team … He not only played well. He’s a tough guy. He kept other players in line. And he added to the toughness and the winning attitude of that team. You look around that clubhouse now, and there’s not one guy like that.”
In regards to Carlos Delgado, Stark reports that two different NL scouts said it is time for the Mets to give up on reviving him, and one scout went as far as calling Delgado “sad.”
On the trade front, Stark lists a large number of starting and relief pitchers to possibly become available in the trade market.
The list includes the following: Joe Blanton, Rich Harden, Bronson Arroyo, Daniel Cabrera, Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson, Miguel Batista, Jarrod Washburn, Brian Fuentes, Huston Street, Chad Cordero, and Jon Rauch.

i like the “sad” comment. i would feel sorry for delgado if he was wrecking some other team.
Give me 16 million dollars for doing jack sht and you can call me anything you want
good call
I would be pretty surprised if Cabrera is available. He’s still only 27 and he is finally showing glimpses of what the O’s have been waiting for. If he can continue at his current pace, he fills a major hole in the O’s rotation and it would seem wasteful for the O’s to deal him at this point.
maybe they should sell high on cabrera. he’s like 7-1 or something and he has a lot of “crazy ollie” in him.
The return of the stache. Wonder if we are going to see him sometime this year. A couple of decent relievers and SP on that list…hope omar has his blackberry open….
I really don’t see a need for another pitcher at this point. Let’s see what Pedro has first.
Now obviously we still need a LF/1B guy. PLEASE don’t say Nady because we can’t afford the prospects it will cost to get him and he is average at best. We need to focus on someone who will be a FA at the end of the season and will cost near nothing. Like um Ibanez
Yea seriously nady is not coming back…please stop campaigning for this loll
Liked it yesterday. Like it today as well.
I am hoping it will be like the Randolph situation. I will continue posting it until the Mets come out and say that they are sticking with Alou.
Unfortunately, that is more up to Alou than it is the Mets.
Unfortunately, that is more up to whoever has been holding the Alou Vodoo doll this past decade, than it is the Mets.
wierd…i put the word between those 2 phrases and it didn’t take.
didn’t take there either.

“Not having Jose Valentin might be the biggest difference between this team and the 2006 team..”
Lol definatly NOT the biggest difference between this team and 2006.
Delgado and a draft pick for Harden? The A’s need an aging slugger to DH now that Thomas is out.
you can’t trade draft picks.
Nor can you trade Delgado for a player with a pluse at this point.
lol- who needs a pulse? By the way- maybe he if we traded Delgado PLUS EVERYONE WE EVER DRAFTED we could get Harden…
/harden = Mark Prior. He could probably be had for one good prospect. Not that I would want him.
So we can only trade for Del-gotta-go for a dead guy? Depends on who the dead guy is but anything outside of Mo Vaughn, I say we make the deal. No brainer.
Oh wait, Mo Vaughn isn’t dead.
this was a joke right? Not only is it illogical, its impossible.
Some of those names are interesting. I too like Cabrera and and I like Bonderman but I don’t see them needing more pitching actually. I defintely see the coming problem at 1b. Delgado may get 20 hrs and 75 rbi this year if we left him out there but that will be with a .300 OBP and no pop. We need another answer. We are not likely to find what we need out there unless someone is willing to toss us a blocked guy with a decent ceiling or we go after a Kevin Millar type.
I vote for offensive help mostly at 1b but a highly serviceable outfielder will do also.
A blocked guy with a good ceiling = Kendry Morales. It makes so much sense. And since he is blocked , and LAA is competing, we can probably get him for lower level guys, which is all we can afford.
I’ve read on this site that Morales is hopelessly blocked but I know nothing about him or the situation. If he fits the bill, I am all for that.
raul ibanez is a great addition to this team now and for maybe the enxt 2 years..he can play LF and 1b, which we’ll need for next year….
as for the stache, i’ll gladly take him back but who does he replace wehn we’re all healthy?
cant send down tatis, he’s playin so good…
the just gotta sever ties with delgado, sign hatteberg (lefty) when he clears waivers, platoon him with Tatis (righty)…
I suppose if Tatis comes back down to earth, Valentin can take his place. There’s also no guarantee that Alou is going to be back as quickly as he’s currently projecting, and I think the Nick Evans experiment is on the verge of ending. So Stache could always take his place if/when Alou decided he needs 6-8 more weeks of recuperation for his quad.
Evans or Casanova would prob go down
Can they please bring back Valentin as a coach, if not a player?
He was supposed to have been a good influence on Reyes in particular.
How about player-manager? That would be cool, and could be an upgrade.
We are now degenerating into complete madness.
How about this trade?
Sexton and Ibanez for
Delgado, a prospect and cash?
oh man,
sexson might be even worse than delgado. far from the worst idea i’ve read today though.
Your right, I just wonder if a change of scenery for both woudl be good. Especially if Sexson would not mind a platoon.
Why does Seattle make that trade?
