Health: Castillo’s Hip, or Quad, Castro’s Elbow
By Matthew Cerrone - May 31, 2008 10:47 am

Luis Castillo left last night’s game with what the team called a ‘strained left hip flexor,’ although Castillo later told reporters that he hurt his left quadricep.

Castillo will be examined today, with a trip to the disabled list remaining a strong possibility.

Meanwhile, Ramon Castro was hit by a pitch on his left elbow in the ninth inning and underwent X-rays after the game.

Hmm, it will be interesting to see who they call up to play. I can’t really see Easley as the everyday 2B, and if he is, they have no other back up infielders.

Maybe one of the “kids” that did well in ST can come up for a trial? Unless it is A. hernandez (yuck).

    • nomoredelgado says:

why dont you think hernandez is a good callup? at least he can pick up a ground ball.

      • metphan says:

        hernandez is terrible.

        • darkstar73 says:

he’s not terrible, he’s great with the glove, and can bat 8th with Church batting 2nd. For a part time solution, defense is the probably the most important thing. Lest we not forget that in ‘06 when we got off to that great start, Ahern was our starting 2nd basemen.

        • 7-train says:

Rather than Church hit 2nd why not:

          Reyes
          Beltran
          Wright
          Church

          Then you do
(Alou if he ever comes back)
          1B
          Schneider
          AHearn

      • TobeRinkler says:

He’s a great fielder with speed that needs to learn how to bunt for a base hit more often–if not, he’ll not make it at this level.

        • Nate W. says:

If he’s a great fielder how do you explain the 9 errors so far? He’s on pace to make 30 errors!

        • darkstar73 says:

my guess is you’ve made the argument at some point in your life that errors and fielding percentage are not adequate measures of a players fielding ability. Use the stats as you wish though.

    • fivepointspro says:

All you guys are clue-less about A-hernndez,

He might be a great fielder but STINKS at bat.

THIS IS NOT WHAT THIS TEAM NEEDS, WHERE IT HAS BECOME EMINENT THAT THIS TEAM LACKS OFFENSE.

Therefore we need a good 2nd baseman that can HIT and field..

Hernandez is not what this team needs.

btw in AAA he is batting .184

      yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • darkstar73 says:

so….who do you suggest? or are you just going to rip down our opinions and offer nothing else?

  2. drtmuir says:

Classic Mets. He starts hitting, then sproioioioing!!!

  3. BlueTrane says:

We might as well put the whole team on the DL and try our best with some super subs! We might get better results….

  4. keystonetom says:

maybe we can trade Delgado for Kent

  5. jimit43 says:

is it time for us maybe to start holding the strength and conditioning staff accountable? im not talking about injuries where players get hit by a pitch, etc, but the team knows that it has a significant amount of veteran players who need a strong strength and conditioning program and i’m not sure they’re getting one.

    • Hubie says:

Do you think theese injuries are only happening to the Mets? Not the case.

    • KinersKornerman says:

I can hear the “Fire Rick Slate” chants beginning.

    • darkstar73 says:

yes, with a good strength and conditioning program, no injuries should ever happen, in fact, no one should ever get injured, ever, ever ever, ever ever ever.

    • Gina says:

Maybe we keep getting injuries because we have a signigicant amount of players in their 30s, or 40s who were already a little bit injury prone. I mean it’s not like Wright and Reyes keep getting injured. It’s Pedro and El Duque and Alou and now Castillo. none of those guys were iron man to begin with and players generally don’t get less injury prone as they age.

      • 7-train says:

It is absolutely time to look at the S&C program and the training staff.

Sure every team has injuries. But the Mets have had a plethora of avoidable strains and pulls over the past 2 years.

Alou hurt himself just standing in the outfield. I have never seen video or an article on what the Mets S&C program is like but I would imagine it is rigid and traditional weight lifting and not the dynamic motion these old bums should be doing to stay limber. These geriatrics should be a on a sports yoga program too to maintain flexibility. Really everyone should with having to play baseball 6 days a week for 6 months.

        • darkstar73 says:

dude, the older you get, the more likely you are to get injured, thats just facts. We happen to have a few older guys who get injured, it has nothing to do with our strength and conditioning being worse then other teams.

        • 7-train says:

Are you actually a member of the Mets training staff?

I work with a 44-year-old world class athlete who never pulls hammys or quads. He is a fighter and not a baseball player. But he works out 2 times a day including sparring and wrestling. I would venture to say that our S&C guy is better than the Mets.

Alou has a great body and probably does reps with 250lbs but he isn’t in shape. Castillo clearly isn’t in shape. It’s also a possilbility that these guys aren’t drinking enough fluids. I don’t know because I’m not back there every day, but something is being done improperly from the piling up of avoidable injuries.

        • jimit43 says:

Yah, its clear that it’s not just old age. Even older athletes (in their 30’s, 40’s) should be in better physical shape than to be injured this frequently and I believe someone should at least look into it

  6. HOFMets57 says:

If Castillo gets placed on the DL, does that Pedro just takes his spot?

Or would Omar bring up a utility infielder along the likes of…*gulp*…Anderson Hernandez?

    • metphan says:

Bring up Valentin to play 2nd. Between the two of them, hopefully one will be healthy enough to play at any given point.

    • Nate W. says:

re: Pedro. mets.com now lists C. Vargas as the Mets starter on Tuesday.

The one thing they cant do is let lame players (Church, Castillo) stay on the roster while carrying three catchers.

If they dont want to put either on the DL, I would think we could see Casanova DFA and Valentin or Argenis Reyes called up. This gives them the flexability to play with only 11 position players.

We could also see Muniz used in long relief today if Pelfrey tanks. Muniz and Pelfrey could then be sent down and two position players could be called up until they need a spot for Pedro. Endless possabilities really, they have 4 or 5 players who could lose their roster spot today or tomorrow.

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

Why? I’m going to see the Mets in San Diego June 7th & 8th. I was excited to see Pedro start the 3rd and then again in San Diego on the 8th. Maybe he’ll skip the start on the 3rd and take the place of Vargas on the 8th? I don’t know but I’ll be pretty bummed to have to see Vargas instead of Pedro

        • Nate W. says:

no idea, it could be wrong. Pedro could take Pelfrey’s spot which is two days after Vargas. Or he could take Maine’s spot and move everyone back a day.

  7. dave27 says:

Wow, I really thought that whopping 3-game win streak sewed up the division for us. It’s amazing how self-congratulatory this team is…when last night was alot of the same.

I said last week, all Heilman pitching well a few games accomplishes is ensuring he’ll blow another big game down the line. Took less than a week. Bravo. Now with s sure loss from Pelfrey, we’re again lucky to get a split.

Heilman is not an 8th inning pitcher. Scho, Smith. Feliciano, and Sanchez have all pitched circles around him this year, but stuborn Willie puts him right back into that role on the strength of TWO outings? If Heilman could do anything right we’d be right in this thing instead of 4.5 back – of the Phillies now, not the Flukes.

As for Castillo – we need punch if he’s out. Just because the whole team is old does not mean we can discount Valentin as a suitable replacement.

    • NegativeFan says:

Nevermind how self-congratulatory the team is…..the stupid fans who were all running around here like this team was finally going to win something go the cold water to the face they never thought was coming.

People: This team has neither the toughness of the Phillies, nor the talent of the Phillies, nor the youth of the Phillies.

I really do hate our current team. God, I can’t wait until the last of these chokers is gone so I can have a player to root for, instead of just a uniform

      • stickguy says:

The Phillies are not a young team. Utley and Howard are already 29ish, rollins is 30+, although Hamels and Myers are younger (around Perez/Maine age, although Hamels could be slightly younger).

        Pen is old too

In any case, they aren’t quite the Rays or Diamondbacks.

        • donwkim79 says:

I’m not a Phils fan so don’t get me wrong… Baseball Players for the most part start declining around the age of 35…. So let’s not make it out as if ROllins,Utley,HOward are Julio Franco…. They can still bang out hits and Play ball for the next 5 years so don’t hate on Good Baseball Players… Utley is a tremendous Player and Howard is a lethal Power bat.. Rollins is a perrenial all star so let’s not hate on em… Just go Out and Beat em and don’t worry about how old they are…

        • Gina says:

Hamels is 24. But yeah, in 3 years Wright and Reyes will still be younger than what Utley and Howard are now.

Also t we don’t know how much hgh/steroids had/has to do with players not breaking down until around 35. Their seems to be a youth movement going on around baseball.

      • KinersKornerman says:

ESPN”s roster analysis has the average age of the Phillies roster at 30.3 and the Mets at 30.3

  8. NegativeFan says:

    4 years of this!!! YEAH!!!

    Too bad we don’t have a useful bench 2b like a Gotay…..oh wait a minute….

  9. Mr. Bananagrabber says:

In other news, the sun rose in the east this morning.

  10. The Glider says:

    Get The Stache ready.

We have no other infielders in the minor leagues ready. Forget about A. Hernandez. We have pitchers on the team who can hit better than him.

    • ReturnOfTheStache says:

Let’s GO STACHE!! Seriously, i think it’s time to call him up

  11. donwkim79 says:

Let’s Hurry Back Valentin… A Solid Major League Player and a Leader in the Club HOUSE>>..

  12. SantanaCYYOung says:

this will only make the champagne taste that much sweeter.

that must be the most classic line of all

    • KinersKornerman says:

Nice job on the perfunctory cheap shot at Willie post.

    • 7-train says:

Honestly that is one of my favorite lines ever. I said that to a girl in the club 2 weeks ago and she looked at me like I was retarded. We’d just gotten a bottle of champagne at our table and somebody bumped into her and spilled her drink. If she were a Mets fan that would have been magic.

I’m going to find an opportunity to say that somebody tonight.

  13. Nate W. says:

with RHP on the scheduled the next two days Delgado will be holding down 1B (for worse or better) which frees up Easley to play 2B. I wonder if Tatis has played any 2B, …ok he played 2 innings in 2006. I guess they could have him take grounders over there, but he cant be good at double plays.

despite reports that Valentin was going to AAA, he was playing DH for St. Lucie again last night after sitting out four days. Could he really be ready after just 14 AB’s in the FSL?

Argenis Reyes hasnt been hitting that much for AAA, and at AA Manny Garcia is having a bad year. Reyes might be the best choice if they feel they must have another 2B on the roster.

Anderson Hernandez isnt an option. If it isnt his .239 OPB at AAA then its probably the 9 errors in 54 games. Do people even look to see how many errors he has before saying he can pick it? It isnt 2006 anymore people…

Anderson Machado has 7 errors as a platoon 3B, yikes!

  14. MainStMets says:

ok for the un-informed poster who was spewing about how young the phils are; here are their starting lineups ages:

    LF Burrel 32
    CF Victorino 28
    RF Jenkins 34
    3B Feliz 33
    SS Rollins 30
    2B Utley 30
    1B Howard 29
    C Ruiz 29

That lineup is not young at all, in fact some of their “young talent”; i.e. Ruiz, Victorino, are already pushing 30, and have yet to establish themselves over a full season.

    • jerseyhoya says:

      LF Burrell 31
      CF Victorino 27
      RF Jenkins 33
      3B Feliz 33
      SS Rollins 29
      2B Utley 29
      1B Howard 28
      C Ruiz 29

So, you got 2 out of 8…

      • MainStMets says:

sorry i didnt sit and check the month each player was born, just did it based on the year, so a guy born in ‘78 is 30 regardless of what month he was born in

  15. losmets5 says:

    Time for the Stache.

  16. donwkim79 says:

Although Schneider is a fine defensive Catcher he’s offense or lack their of worries me… I wouldn’t mind seeing Razor Ramon starting over Schenider or atleast starting against left handed Bat… I hope Razor doesn’t go on the DL… A Yo…

  17. donwkim79 says:

When are the Mets going to send down Nick Evans??? The Kid is really overmatched and needs to go back to A ball… If Nick Evans is the Best Prospect to be called up beside F Mart OH MY GOD the Mets are in trouble… Nick Evans should be playing for the Newark Bears…. ON the Brighter Side Can’t wait to have Valentin Back with the Mets… Valentin gives the METS leadership in the clubhouse and on the Field… LETS go Stache hurry Back………..

    • Gina says:

They’ll send him down when we have someone else to play that position. Right now we don’t. They didn’t just call him up for fun.

  18. DJ1486 says:

You guys think they are gonna delay the game and try to play it later tonight or a double header tomorrow?

    • Nate W. says:

later today, its Fox’s game they arent going to want to give it away. They’ll make the fans wait and wait and wait, and start the game at 8 pm if they can.

I have no idea what the common off days would be, but I’m sure someone is looking that up as the Mets do not want to play a double header tomorrow with seven more games to go after that before an off day.

  19. koosman says:

any word on today’s game?–it’s raining in manhattan. I guess they usually don’t call them until game time.

  20. drodro22 says:

Rollins a perennial all-star? Has he even started an all star game? Most overrated MVP in the history of baseball is mr. rollins…..Basically the MVP is a home run award, thus Phillies players winning it every year despite not doing anything of note as a team….

    • donwkim79 says:

A Yo the Phils won the Pennant Last Year… Rollins had 212 hits and 30 home runs as a Leadoff Hitter and his team won the Pennant… Thus Rollins is the MVP although I believe Holliday should’ve won for the Rocks… This year it will be either Chipper, Berkman, or Utley… Regardless of who wins the award who gives a crap just go out and win a Championship that’s what’s up……..

      • MainStMets says:

won the pennant? ive always thought winning the pennant meant you represented your league in the world series? could have sworn those world beating rocks swept the phils. hmm

  21. dominicanboy08 says:

    wow…its getting ugly out there

  22. DJ1486 says:

Yeah the forecast is strong storms till about 6… I’ve got tickets and I don’t know if I should go or wait till they make an announcement

  23. backinbusiness says:

For what its worth, my folks in Philly reported it was pouring at 12pm and is no longer raining. So perhaps it is moving through quickly.

On the other hand, Rubin reported yesterday that the Mets are already planning on a Sunday day/nighter should it rain out today.

    • Nate W. says:

Surprised by the day/night plan, I guess there are no common off days when the Dodgers are on the east coast.

by moving Pelfrey into the double header it makes him the likely choice to be dropped from the rotation to make room for Pedro. Having 9 games in 8 days ties thier hands a little bit as far as moving pitchers around and slotting Pedro in where they want.

  24. ReturnOfTheStache says:

We should get Valentine to soak up all the rain with his mustache :)

  25. mrose says:

i dunno, it looks horrible out there and the weather report is rain of some sort till 9pm

  26. koosman says:

At least if it rains they can’t lose. :-)

  27. LIMetfan74 says:

Once again we are depending on another over the hill player in Valentin to come back and help us. Seriously how long till he gets hurt again. This is just an endless cycle. You can not blame this on the strength coach. Omar is to blame for this Senior Citizen home he has put together.

They are going to wait the weather out as long as the can tonight. They def dont want to play a day night doubble header tomorrow then travel to the west coast. They will be shot if they do that.

    • Nate W. says:

platooning Castillo and Valentin will help ensure that they always have a healthy 2B and will lowerer the chances that either gets hurt.

They should platoon at C, 1B, and 2B the rest of the year, imo. And they should find someone for LF…. Ibanez? anyone? A Tatis/Chavez LF isnt terrible, but it almost is.

  28. clarkx14 says:

what do u think of signing kenny lofton for left field
