Read: Carter, Backman, the Old Days, .500, etc.

by Matthew Cerrone on June 1st, 2008 at 8:52 am

In the Daily News, Bob Raissman explains why, “Every time Gary Carter opens his mouth, he hurts his own case.”

Meanwhile, also in the Daily News, Bill Madden considers how the current situation between ownership and Willie Randolph may have been handled differently in ‘the old days.’

According to Kevin Kernan in the New York Post, Wally Backman desperately wants back in to the Mets organization.

Backman currently manages the Joliet Jackhammers in the independent Northern League.

In Newsday, Ken Davidoff explains how, until the Mets are, say, 15 games over .500, a) each loss will take on a story of its own, and b) Billy Wagner will not read the newspaper.

According to Jack Curry in the New York Times, the timing is ‘perfect’ for Fernando Tatis.

Lastly, Filip Bondy of the Daily News looks at Aaron Heilman, who, as he puts it, is ‘caught in the middle.’

Health: Castillo and Church, Castro and Alou

by Matthew Cerrone on June 1st, 2008 at 8:25 am

Ryan Church and Luis Castillo both told reporters yesterday that they intend to be in tonight’s starting lineup.

Castillo, who was able to pinch hit on Saturday, left Friday’s game with what the team called a ‘strained left hip flexor,’ although Castillo later told reporters that he hurt his left quadricep.

Ramon Castro was hit Friday by a pitch on his left elbow, which, though still swollen, is not broken, according to X-rays taken by the team on Saturday.

Matt Wise will fly to California today for a second opinion on his right shoulder.  Wise, who was diagnosed by the Mets with tendinitis, believes it could be nerve damage instead.

Either way, Willie Randolph told reporters that Wise will be out at least ‘a couple of months.’

Lastly, according to the Daily News, Moises Alou will likely be activated from the disabled list when he’s eligible on Thursday.
