Buzz: Braves in the Pitcher’s Market
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 2, 2008 12:23 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal, in his latest video report for FoxSports.com, the Braves recently contacted the A’s about Joe Blanton, “but do not come close to meeting Oakland’s price.”

Rosenthal reports that it will take ‘a knock-out offer’ to get Blanton or Rich Harden.

In his latest Rumblings & Grumblings for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the Braves are open to bringing back Greg Maddux, who is currently on the Padres.

…so, the Braves are apparently looking for a starting pitcherbecause i love the drama, there is something quite intriguing about having the opportunity to beat down maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz…

According to Stark, Nate Robertson, Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn could all be available as the July 31 trade deadline moves closer.

Remember when we were bracing ourselves for the consolation prize of Joe Blanton?

Now the Braves and the Yankees desperately need someone like him.

    What a great week.

    • adropofvenom says:

Gotta think Billy Beane played his cards right there……moved quickly on Haren and sold him for a boatload of talent, but held onto Blanton until teams begin to get desperate, and someone will get desperate and overpay, just watch.

Only thing that scares me is the Hudson trade, the one time another GM really got the better of Beane in a trade.

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Shiiit, do you remember when we were hoping to sign Barry Zito two years ago?

      What a relief.

    • hbrill61 says:

Ummm….didn’t we just get our asses handed to us by the Braves?

  2. GuruMets says:

    Nail, meet head.

  3. TurkWendell9999 says:

    Clemens hasn’t retired yet either.

    • adam11216 says:

ROGER CLEMENS IS IN TED TURNER’S BOX … AND ROGER CLEMENS IS COMIN’ BACK … OH MY GOOD … GOODNESS GRACIOUS …

      • krumbledkookie says:

It would be more like the Braves announcers to fall sleep during the broadcast than to go crazy for Rawjah Clemens.

      • professor met says:

really enjoyed the opie and anthony analysis of this quote the other morning. hahaha.

  4. LongJohnMaine says:

Joe Blanton is commonly described as an “innings-eater.”

To me, the phrases “innings-eater” and “game-manager” are nice ways of saying you suck. While Joe Blanton may not completely suck, he is nothing special, I’d say he’s average at best. So yes, I hope the Braves acquiesce Oakland with a knockout offer to get this bum.

    • Gina says:

A lot of teams would love to have an average pitcher who can consistently go 7 innings. That’s more than what we’re getting out of Perez and Pelfrey and our 5th spot right now.

Obviously I don’t want to trade for him because it would be stupid with what their asking for, but it’s not like he’s horrible, or wouldn’t improve a team.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Well, that’s my main point, which is what we seem to agree on (and which is why Beane is a smart GM): a team won’t be able to get Blanton at fair market value. If he does get traded during the season, it’s a virtual lock that someone will have overpaid for him.

It’s a little harsh to say he sucks I guess, but I’m not a Blanton fan; probably never will be.

      • Another Matt says:

Yeah but Blanton’s going to go for a package worthy of a #1/#2 starter, when in reality he’s a middle order guy.

  5. Gina says:

I know Rich Harden has nasty stuff, but I would think you would have to be incredibly desperate or retarded to offer a “knock-out” package for him.

    • theperfectgame says:

Maybe the”knock-out” package just means that the other team would have to pick up ALL of Harden’s outstanding medical bills?

  6. C Dubb says:

I know it’s somewhat of a longshot, but if Pedro can come back and stay healthy, and Orlando “Humpty Dumpty” Hernandez put himself back together again, we may actually have a real starting rotation, 1-5.

    Santana, Maine, Pedro, Perez, Duque.

Is it just me, or has it been a long time since we had a rotation with no “fill-in” starters?

And not only that, but then Pelfrey and Vargas would be “depth”! Unheard of.

  7. krumbledkookie says:

I’d love to beat Glavine down too, but given our one opportunity this year, we sucked it up big time. Let’s be careful what we wish for.

  8. krumbledkookie says:

    To heck with Blanton, but…

    Huston Street, anyone?

  9. jamie says:

I’m gonna be really disappoointed if maine + perez = us needing someone like blanton.

  10. ness589 says:

Nate Robertson could be a good pickup. If Heilman improves (there’s a chance), we could package him and some other expendable bullpen arms for him. Tigers have absolutely nothing in the relief department. Robertson has been having bad luck this year (333 BABip). A change to an NL team and better defense would help him.

    • therealsince86 says:

Do you really want to pay him 17 million for the next 2 seasons?

    • ExileInLA says:

Since you know Dontrelle isn’t going to spend the next 5 years in the Tigers’ bullpen, they might consider an even up trade of Oliver Perez for Nate Robertson.

It’s clear that the Mets can’t risk giving OP Boras-$$$ (5 yrs @ $12mm, maybe?), since OP still has his million dollar arm and his ten cent head. Robertson has good stuff, and if he reverts to form, he’s worth the $17mm in 2009-2010; if he doesn’t, he’s only a few million over the “innings eater” benchmark of $5mm/year.

Look at the 2009 staff: Santana – Maine – Pedro – Pelfrey? – Who? – Who?. We’ve seen the danger of rushing a pitcher, so don’t count on Niese. The AAA arms don’t inspire me. So, putting Robertson in there gives you 5 with Pedro, and that means you only need to get someone to be there when Pedro gets hurt…

  11. metsfanmurph says:

I just saw the newest Ozzie Guillen tirade. How funny is this guy?? He said our offense has sucked for a year and a half and called out his GM.

    • nomoredelgado says:

it was hilarious, but he’d better not get fired, because i want many more rants for years to come.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Hahaha I saw that, and then Williams said it’s a bad idea to throw your boss under the bus.

  12. CitizenSnips says:

Oakland’s being incredibly stubborn for having such mediocre pitching. Do they think someone is going to bite?

    • krumbledkookie says:

They probably do. For the record, I do too. He’s not a great pitcher by any stretch, but could put someone over the hump.

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Not stubborn at all, they just know how to play the market. Billy Beane’s a genius, he knows a team will eventually become desperate and will pay up.

  13. donwkim79 says:

The Professor, Glavine and Smoltz beat the Mets Brains in all throughout the 90’s…. 3 HOF pitchers… I’m not so sure I would want Maddux going to the Braves….

    • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

      you are such an idiot…

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Check out his home and road splits. He’s God-awful on the road this year, his ERA is over a full 3 runs higher on the road, and his WHIP is roughly 0.50 higher on the road. He is terrible now. At this point in his career, Maddux is just another mirage of Petco Park.

      • UnclePauly says:

Here’s ur solution to an old and injury prone rotation…go out and find the oldest pitcher available!!! PERFECT. Then all the nice Jayson Starks and Peter Gammons can look at the rotation, think it’s still 1995 and go on about how the braves are amazing.

        • therealsince86 says:

Thing is it is a good move for the Braves. Should cost them almost nothing. He will not block any AAA guys nor are they on the hook for later. It bolsters this year’s rotation with no impact on the future.
Besides that will cause the other 2 Braves fans to come out to support their team which means they will actually MAKE more money than usual.

      • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Sounds just like the Braves team. 22-7 at Turner, 7-21 not at Turner. Why are people still touting them to win the NL East?

I’d love to see us return the favor to the Braves and sweep them at home, but I think the Braves place much more importance on playing us than any other team. Even if we lose the season series to them, we can still control how we do in the NL East this year if we continue to play well against the Phillies and the Fish.

        • krumbledkookie says:

Well, the Mets are one game over .500 and some are still touting them to win the NL East.

          Lots o’ baseball left.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

You know what? I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t even care if the Braves beat us 12 times this year (unlikely to happen anyway), because if we’ve learned anything about the Braves this year, it’s a) they are an atrocious road team, b) their SP leaves a lot to be desired and c) they play harder and better against the Mets than any other team in the NL.

So, the Braves can beat us all they like, because in the end, they will consistently lose road series to teams like Cincinnati and Colorado, while we take care of business against the rest of the NL.

        • cgio07 says:

Uh..not to be a downer..but the Mets lost a road series to the Rockies too…and they lost 2 of 3 from cinci at home..

        • LongJohnMaine says:

We beat Cincinnati 2 out of 3. We beat Cueto and Belisle.

And if the Mets were going into Colorado today instead of last week, I highly doubt they’d lose a series there, with the way they’ve been playing baseball the last week.

        • hbrill61 says:

Yeah thats what everybody was saying after the yankee series…lets see them take 6 of 7 from San Francisco & San Diego before we start printing up playoff tickets.

  14. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Because the words might have been correct in the 90’s, all three of those pitchers are well past their primes….
Maddux is a great 70 pitch pitcher, that gets them thru 4.
Smoltz is now a sidearming reliver who has shown no ability to stay healthy thing year
and we all know about choke artist Glavine, one good start against us does not a season make…
The only reason they Braves are decent is because of Jair Jurgens

    • krumbledkookie says:

I hear Chipper Jones is pretty good too.

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I’m sure Chipper hitting .400+ has something to do with it as well.

When does the recently annual Chipper to the DL take place this year?

      • UnclePauly says:

Chipper? I don’t know no chipper? You guys talking about Larry?

        • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Larry or “Pending the results of a paternity test” as he’s known at Hooters.

        • cgio07 says:

you’re a moron. Chipper is probably the best hitting in baseball right now…its pretty lame that you use retarded claims like that to criticize him. Cant knock his 420 avg so lets make something up…real big of you

        • LongJohnMaine says:

What are you his lawyer? Relax bro.

And he didn’t make that up, you don’t remember when Larry got sued by a woman because he had a kid out of wedlock with her?

        • hbrill61 says:

Yeah and I heard he a thing for Guiseepe Franco!!!

      • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

I was talking about pitching…Larry will be under .400 by the end of the week anyway

        • krumbledkookie says:

          Yeah, so he stinks.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

I can’t believe some people are actually giving Larry a legitimate chance to hit .400. I think Stark said he’d give him a 30%-40% chance.

Keith Law (who is the man) gave Larry Wayne less than 20:1 shot. Sounds about right to me.

        • UnclePauly says:

complete knowledge bomb from Keith Law. Larry is NOT hitting .400 by the end of the season. Jayson Stark go back to Philly where you can continue idolizing that bum rollins

        • krumbledkookie says:

He probably won’t hit .400, but I give him as good a shot as anyone. Mets fans should know better than any that this guy is a great hitter.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Chipper has never hit higher than .340 in his career. He ain’t hitting .400.

        • beltran the warrior says:

the braves’ season rests on chipper staying healthy. if/when he goes, that’s going to place a LOT of pressure on jeff francoeur to be tex’s preotection. i don’t think francouer is that good by himself but withing the context of that lineup when he can be a deadly complementary bat, he fits like a glove.

he’s like pat burrell in that respect albeit with much much better defense.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Francoeur is easy to pitch around, just throw him all off-speed stuff and breaking stuff. All he can hit is fastballs. Which is why it kills me when the Mets throw this bum fastballs.

    • TobeRinkler says:

      Hudson?

  15. mrsparkle6986 says:

Nate Robertson, Miguel Batista and jarrod Washburn all have ERAs above 5.00. Picking them up would be a total waste.

  16. Ryan Synagogue says:

    Mike and the Mad Dog:

A caller suggested trading Wang for Sabathia, he responds with

Ian Kennedy for Sabathia, straight up

And that the Indians would take that in a heart beat.

    XD

    • krumbledkookie says:

      Wait… he was serious?

      • Ryan Synagogue says:

Oh yes he was serious. The reigning AL CY Young award winner for an overhyped Yankee prospect with ZERO wins who cant find the strike zone

    • LongJohnMaine says:

      Jesus, Fatcessa is delusional.

      • adam11216 says:

duncan for sabathia seems like a better deal. indians would be NUTS to turn it down.

        • Ryan Synagogue says:

          Ohlendorf for K-Rod?

        • LongJohnMaine says:

How about…wait for it….Hughes, Kennedy and Melky Cabrera for Johan Santana?? This actually could’ve happened 6 months ago!!

  17. UnclePauly says:

Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes for Branden Inge
