Note: Peterson and HoJo in the Crosshairs

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 2:51 pm

In his recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes that Howard Johnson and Rick Peterson, in addition to Willie Randolph, could all be in jeopardy if the team goes in to another ‘tailspin.’

…i go back and forth on peterson…on one hand, he’s very good at what he does when he has a pitcher who will listen to him…that said, he seems to struggle with the pitcher who doesn’t buy in to his philosophys…on one hand, it would be nice to have a pitching coach who could recognize each pitcher’s strengths and work with him to get the most of the arm…on the other hand, if that pitcher buys in to what peterson is selling it’s hard to argue with the results

…i wish the answer could be as easy as only acquiring pitchers who fit peterson’s mold…however, in this market, you take what you can get

Rosenthal also writes about the upcoming draft, the trade deadline, the Reds, the Rays, the availability of Zack Grienke, and the status of free-agent 1B Scott Hatteberg, who, according to Rosenthal, the Mets like, but who ‘have no place for another left-handed hitting first baseman as long as they remain committed to Carlos Delgado.’

Opinion: Stay Healthy, Pedro

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 am

Prior to last night’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Pedro Martinez will be allowed to throw between 90 and 100 pitches in his start against the Giants tonight.

I keep hearing a lot about expectations for Martinez. Some people expect him to throw six innings, some expect him to do this or that – frankly, I expect him to stay healthy, and be some one this team can rely on game in and game out.

The Mets are 15–7 in games when Maine and Santana are the day’s starting pitcher, meaning they are 13–21 when some else takes the ball.

Given the way Oliver Perez pitched last night, and the way he has pitched in the last month, the Mets, who are struggling to stay above .500, need another stable starting pitcher. They need another guy, besides Johan Santana and John Maine, who can take the ball and be counted on to deliver a stable, reliable, strong outing.

Pedro can be that guy…as long as he’s healthy.

Video: Draft Preview, Slotting System, Mets

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 am

At MiLB.com, minor-league guru Jonathan Mayo still predicts that the Mets will select OF Ike Davis from Arizona State with their first pick in the 2008 MLB Draft on June 5.

from what i can gather, the Mets have been in contact with ike, as well as 18–year-old SS Anthony Hewitt, among others, as they look for a bat, as mayo has been writing for weeks…

By the way, in addition to his outstanding work for MLB.com, Mayo is also the author of Facing Clemens, which will give you a sense of what it’s like to stand in the batter’s box against Roger Clemens.

In the following video, SNY’s Ted Berg talks with Mayo about the ‘slotting system,’ why a team would adhere to it, or not, and who the Mets may select in this year’s draft.

ESPN 2 will televise the first four hours of the draft, on Thursday, June 5, starting at 2 pm EDT, while MLB.com will live-stream the entire two-day event.

Quote: Oliver had a Horrible Night

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 7:05 am

In last night’s loss to the Giants, Oliver Perez allowed six runs on five hits and two walks before being pulled from the game with just one out in the first inning.

what’s up with oliver…this is three starts in a row now during which he could not find the plate, could not crack 90 mph with his fastball he and essentially got torched…in Colorado he walked eight batters, against the Marlins he let up three home runs, and last night, well, last night he was just a total mess

In 12 starts this season, during which the Mets are 5–7, Perez has allowed 43 runs in 60 innings pitched.

Willie Randolph, on Perez, speaking to reporters:

“Oliver had a horrible night. He didn’t throw the ball well…You have to make adjustments, and Ollie didn’t seem to make any adjustments. I don’t think he hit the glove all night. That was disappointing. Even if you don’t have your best stuff, you need to make adjustments. You can’t just haul off and throw as hard as you can, and that’s what it seemed like he was doing…You’ve got to keep us in the ball game, and he didn’t do that. It was a terrible outing.”

yikes…the thing is, he’s right…willie did not look happy when he pulled oliver from the hill…it makes me wonder if perez’s spot in the rotation is a stable as he’d like to think it is…

…you know, if the Mets knew they could trade for a more stable starting pitcher, by using, say, a guy like Aaron Heilman, or a prospect, etc, i wonder if they’d consider trading perez…

…i’m not suggesting they do, but, knowing this team intends to shake things up a bit before the deadline, i wonder if perez is a candidate to be moved since he is a free agent at the end of the season

Buzz: Pagan isn’t Close

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 am

According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Angel Pagan is still unable to bat from the right side of the plate, ‘signaling a return isn’t close.’

again, if pagan is not ready, with Moises Alou due back around the end of the week, the Mets cannot continue to carry Nick Evans, who is beyond overmatched…at this point, Rual Casanova is being used a pinch hitter, which makes no sense either…if casanova has to be on the roster, then Brian Schneider should be starting every game while Ramon Castro is used as a pinch hitter…otherwise, casanova and evans should be demoted, and alou and Val Pascucci or Chris Aguila should be promoted…
