postGame: Giants 10 Mets 2
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 3, 2008 1:03 am

The Mets (28–28) lost to the Giants (25–33) by the score of 10 to 2 in San Francisco tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

This game was essentially over the minute Oliver Perez stepped to the mound, as he allowed six runs on five hits and two walks before being pulled from the game with just one out in the first inning.  That was basically it.

However, in case you missed it:

Oliver Perez was all over the place in the first inning, grooving fastballs that never cracked 90 mph; Claudio Varags pitched well in relief, before being pulled for a pinch hitter; the Mets left the bases loaded in the first inning; oddly, Carlos Delgado continues to play nice defense; Delgado was later hit on the hand by an inside fastball; Jose Reyes tied a team record by reaching base in his 33rd straight game; Ryan Church had two outfield assists, tying him with Xavier Nady for most in the NL; Neither Aaron Heilman nor Carlos Muniz pitched well in mop-up duty; and, lastly, and most importantly, the Mets clearly need sleep.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the Giants tomorrow night in San Francisco at 10 pm EDT, with Pedro Martinez taking on Barry Zito.

    Oh, Oliver. :(

  2. Danny says:

Put it behind you quickly. Win the series.

Is Perez injured? His velocity is very concerning.

  3. signupcall says:

I go out for the night after the top of the 1st and come back to this. It feels like I just came home to a bedroom that looks sabotaged even though you had just straightened it out two days earlier :(

  4. TurboDan says:

At least the loss wasn’t really on Willie, except if you want to argue taking Vargas out did the most damage. The offense didn’t really seem to help the situation, though.

  5. D in Ben Lomond says:

I know Heilman didn’t pitch well, but where is the critique of Muniz? He was awful too. Even more so.

I think it was the cold weather that affected Ollie’s velocity. Today’s high was about 60. And the 7:45 to sunset wind howling from behind home didn’t help. The ball just started dying after sunset.

I’ve got row A seats in the upper deck tomorrow!!

COME ON PEDRO, pitch like its 1996!

    • TurboDan says:

Eh, Muniz is a rookie. Rookies make mistakes, have bad games. He pitched terribly, but let’s face it – this game was over in the first inning. Or, really, the next couple innings when Vargas kept us modestly in it and the offense failed.

  6. D in Ben Lomond says:

I am guessing that Delgado will sit tomorrow. His career #s against zito are pretty bad. 9K in 19AB. .648 OPS.

  7. D in Ben Lomond says:

Most of the rest of the team has very limited exposure to Zito. I hope Zito doesn’t decide to pitch a good game tomorrow.

  8. TurboDan says:

I hate all these excuses…. they can’t play when it’s below 70 degrees, they can’t play after a long flight…. Ugh, can they ever just PLAY?!?

  9. metfaninla says:

i think you mean muniz fell apart. as vargas left the game after being pinch hit for in the top of the 6th with a line of 4 2/3, 3h, 0r, 0bb, 4k.

  10. D in Ben Lomond says:

I don’t think Ollie will even fetch the $/yr he got for arbitration this year? His WHIP, ERA, and BAA is returning to his career numbers. What an anomaly. I am amazed that he is the same person game to game.

I am a lifelong Mets fan and have seen the Mets through good and bad. I just don’t think this team is very good and potentially I have little confidence they will get better in the near future. The organization opted for name veterans who just can’t stay healthy. They’ve traded away guys that have done far better than what they got in return. Yes, I realize this happens to all organizations but the bottom line is that do your decisions produce a winning team? Basically a manager is only as good as his players and the players from the AS break of last season to this point are a .500 team. They have a glaring hole at first base, adequate but unremarkable catching, a glaring hole in left field, a decent but not terrific center fielder and a wobbiy and potential disabled list second baseman. Still it the inconsistent pitching that is hurting them the most. Whether is Omar and/or Petersen most of the guys they’ve traded for have brought little to the team. I’d appretiate others thoughts on this.

      • npanzeca says:

I sadly agree, this isn’t getting better any time soon. We may be in for some dark days in the near future.

  11. The Glider says:

My suggestion is that we collectively let go, emotionally, of this game and move on to Pedro’s start. I had a feeling we were losing tonight’s game anyhow due to the late plane flight.

    Thank you ESPN.

Getting Pedro a win is more important us tomorrow.

    • metsfanatic says:

Can’t really blame this on ESPN. Oliie took an early filight. He is simply a complete head case who cannot put two good seasons together. As stated guys like Santana and Pedro go to the mound with a plan. OP goes to the mound with crackerjacks for brains.

  12. ccmetfan says:

Muniz is getting sent down as Willie already said and they’re keeping both Vargas and Pelfrey. Hopefully Pedro can make a nice comeback and pitch at least 6 innnings. Zito dominated the Mets last season but this offense is more lively lately

    • npanzeca says:

God forbid he goes down early again, since Vargas pitched last night, this could be a disaster.

  13. D in Ben Lomond says:

yes! I’ve gotta sit with giantes fans tomorrow. WE MUST WIN FOR PEDRO!!

  14. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Hey, at least Smoltz looked like sh*t with his new arm slot tonight…

  15. Jmiles says:

Scott Boras must be freaking out.Perez won’t get the money they are looking for unless of course there is some idiot owner who gets talked into the illusion that Perez is a big game pitcher.
I thought he came out a day early to be fresh? I have plans on going to a game in June.I will check to see if he is pitching because I wouldn’t spend $1 to see him.
I will not fault the team on this one.between the late arrival they had no chance.
    JM

  16. ccmetfan says:

I couldn’t believe Perez pitched this bad. He’s had other horrible starts but yesterdays was awful.
Kind of ironic that I was playing MLB08 the show against my cousin and I won with Perez in an 11 inning complete game against the yankees. If only the real Perez pitched as good as virtual Ollie.

    • ToastyJoe says:

You’ll see Carlos Delgado hustle down to first after hitting a fly ball before you’ll see Oliver Perez pitch an 11-inning complete game.

  17. dave27 says:

Just think, you could have traveled 3,000 miles for this stinker like I did!

In case everyone missed it, the Dodgers won 8-2 after making the same red-eye cross-country flight (actually LA is farther than SF from NY). And Ollie traveled ahead of the team. So no excuses for him – just a disaster.

Vargas was great tonight on a night when no one else could get an out. Removing him from the rotation is a mistake.

  18. nagel100 says:

next year we will have the salary of El Duque/Perez/DelGado and Martinez too use on free agents.

that should be around 38 million.

not a bad starting point for some additions.

  19. Ollie is/was an absolute disaster. He’s a mess. It was almost comical. I shouldn’t have laughed, but he gave up a home-run to a guy who has had 5 major league at bats. This loss wasn’t too painful of course, after the way they played during the last homestand, I can’t be too upset. They did have their chances though, not like they didn’t.

First day I saw Church smile, BTW! Haha. I’m really excited for tomorrow. I know Zito’s had two good starts against the Mets last season, and I’m a Zito fan, but let’s just hope he pitches the exact way he’s pitched all season (sans the Marlins start).

    • Koko says:

Actually Zito has pitched pretty well in all of May. He was pretty inefficient, but sported a 3.49ERA that month. Hopefully June is like his April.

  20. terpz06 says:

ok matt now that you’ve played around with the paragraph form of the recap can you go back to the bullet points? thanks

  21. GW says:

We all know how the Mets always make crappy pitchers look like Cy Young so I guess Zito will have a complete game shutout tonight.

  22. KFS says:

“lastly, and most importantly, the Mets clearly need sleep.”

If sleep is what lost the game last night for these guys, this season was clearly over before it began.

I’ve never played MLB baseball and clearly don’t know how big of a toll traveling in luxury takes on these guys but I’m still going to say that is a sad excuse for a bunch of babies. Seriously, I’ve flown red-eye from the west coast to be back at work @ 9am and never complained about it or used it as an excuse for lack of productivity. These guys fly in a private plane, sleep in a Ritz, gain 3 extra hours…yea, way to be a professional.

  23. koosman3669 says:

Instead of calling Ollie out this time, I think Wagner needs to take him out behind the bullpen and pound the crap out of him.
