At MiLB.com, minor-league guru Jonathan Mayo still predicts
that the Mets will select OF Ike Davis from Arizona State with their first pick in the 2008 MLB Draft on June 5.
…from what i can gather, the Mets have been in contact with ike, as well as 18–year-old SS Anthony Hewitt, among others, as they look for a bat, as mayo has been writing for weeks…
By the way, in addition to his outstanding work for MLB.com, Mayo is also the author of Facing Clemens, which will give you a sense of what it’s like to stand in the batter’s box against Roger Clemens.
In the following video, SNY’s Ted Berg talks with Mayo about the ‘slotting system,’ why a team would adhere to it, or not, and who the Mets may select in this year’s draft.
ESPN 2 will televise the first four hours of the draft, on Thursday, June 5, starting at 2 pm EDT, while MLB.com will live-stream the entire two-day event.

June 5th is Thursday, not Friday, and I think that 11 am is Pacific, because the draft starts at 2 pm on the east coast.
You are correct, sir. Thank you.
No prob.
I assume facing Clemons must be like facing the Incredible Hulk but with a worse attitude.
I heard Hewitt wants the bank if he’s going to sign. Does this mean we’re going to against the slotting system this year?
Looking forward to the follow-up book, “Injecting Clemens.”
…and, of course, the third entry in the trilogy: “F—–g Clemens,” by Mindy McCready.
Although don’t get your hopes up for that third installment any time soon. Sources say she won’t release it until she graduates high school.
. . . and learns to write.
nice.
You think we could just skip a step this year and draft someone who has already had Tommy John surgery?
I would say eff the slotting system. Do I really care if Bud Selig is mad at the Mets??
I feel as if Selig doesn’t like any big market teams.
Thanks in part to this site and the success of the Rays and D-backs, I’ve very interested in this year’s draft. Can Ike Davis be ready for The Show in a couple of years? Is is that type of player? Mets need to draft some high-impact prospects.
Pedroia came out of ASU and he ready for the show within 2.5 years at about 1000 abs. They have a great baseball program at ASU. So hopefully ‘Yes’ because I’d love to have some of my Sun Devils on my fav pro team.
Also thanks to the last few years of miserable drafting, outside the obvious (Wright, Reyes and Kazmir) all the other Met current/former prospects are still unproven, washed up, or playing for Bobby V in Japan.
It’s about time this team…..no, organization….focuses on the bigger picture.
Joe Smith was a decent pick at #3 a couple of years ago.
If Eric Hosmer falls to us, we have to draft him.
You hit the nail on the head. I’m crossing my fingers for him. Not only does he fill a need, but he’d likely the BPA if he fell to us at 18.
or Allen Dykstra out of Wake Forest….not Lenny’s kid Cutter, but I’ll take him too.
Just read a SI article on the 08 Draft. They have the Mets picking up Weeks’ lil brother out of Miami. He plays 2B. If he’s as good as Rickie, I’d love to see him at CitiField.
