According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Mets C Raul Casanova has left the team as his father passed away this evening.
Triple-A New Orleans C Robinson Cancel will temporarily replace Casanova on the team’s 25–man roster.
…first off, condolences to raul…i’m so sorry…
…second, according to the rule, a team can replace a player on the bereavement list with any one from their 40–man roster…which begs the question, why are the Mets so hell-bent on carrying three catchers…
…by the way, thanks to james for the bereavement rule…
The Mets (29–28) defeated the Giants (23–36) by the score of 9 to 6 in San Francisco tonight.

It was great to see the Mets rebound from last night’s disaster, even though they squandered an eight-run lead to win by just three – all while Pedro Martinez made his return, not just on the mound, but at the plate as well.
However, in case you missed it:
Despite all of his struggles, Barry Zito still has a beautiful curve ball, which, unfortunately for him, is still not enough to keep him from getting shelled; Pedro Martinez, who is the opposite of Oliver Perez, struggled with his control early, but still managed to keep the Giants off balance, getting weak ground balls and pop ups all night long in a 104–pitch outing; he left the game and was inundated with hi-fives, hugs and smiles from his teammates in the dugout; Ryan Church plays left field like a tight end; in the fifth, Carlos Beltran started an eight-run inning by ripping an RBI-double, which was followed by some shoddy defense by the Giants, an RBI single by Martinez, base hits, walks, and a whole lot of smiles in the dugout; in the end, in a spot when Scott Schoeneweis needed to just ‘let ‘em hit it,’ he did, and allowed a three-run home run in the ninth, meaning Billy Wagner had to come on for a save, which of course he locked down.
The Mets complete their three-game series with the Giants tomorrow, at 3:45 pm EDT, with John Maine facing Matt Cain.
