Draft: The Draft is On
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 5, 2008 3:00 pm

MLB’s 2008 First-Year Player Draft has begun.

The Mets have three of the first 33 picks, including the No. 18 and No. 22 overall picks.

Update2:15 pm

If you’d like to watch the draft on ESPN 2, go to MLB.com, as they’re streaming it live.

Update2:17 pm

Why is this even important?

The Draft is extra important this season, because, as SNY’s Ted Berg just yelled in the office, “free agency is dead.”

I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but his point is understood, which is that when teams like the Rays are locking up Evan Longoria and his 80 major-league at bats to a six-year deal, at a low annual salary, it means the emphasis on home-grown talent is more important than ever.

Couple that to the fact the Mets have not had a first-round pick in two years, but now have three of the first 33 picks, and you’ve got a some-what important day here.

Update2:25 pm

To follow each pick, go to MLB.com and load their Draft Tracker.

Update2:30 pm

The Royals just selected 1B Eric Hosmer, who was among the highest rated players in the draft, a Scott Boras client and a player who likely command a large signing bonus.

And so, if the Royals are not fearful of the Commisioner’s Office, and the slotting system, the Mets should not be as well.

According to Peter Gammons on ESPN, Hosmer could end up becoming the best power hitter in the draft.

Update2:44 pm

The Mets were said to be looking to draft a college bat.

So far, of the first six picks, only one has been a pitcher.

Update3:00 pm

C Jason Castro has been drafted by the Astros.

ESPN and MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo had suggested the Mets may have drafted Castro had he been available.

Update3:40 pm

The above statement can also be said for 1B Justin Smoak, C Brett Lawrie, RHP Ethan Martin and 2B Jemile Weeks, who were all just drafted.

The Mets are on deck, and should be making their first pick in the next 10 minutes or so.

Update3:45 pm

The Blue Jays have selected 1B David Cooper, meaning the Mets are officially on the clock.

Update3:50 pm

The Mets have drafted 1B-OF Ike Davis from Arizona State with their first pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

For more on Davis, see my post here.

Update4:00 pm

I would like to see the Mets go for another bat, thus maximizing their chances of developing a hitter.

Then, if he’s still available, I am really hoping they can select 2B-SS Cutter Dysktra, Lenny’s son.

Update4:16 pm

The Mets have drafted SS Reese Havens from South Carolina with their second first-round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

The Padres then selected Allan Dysktra, who is not Cutter – they are two different people.

Update4:32 pm

Jordan Zakarin, from MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com, will be blogging on this post from this point forward.

Update5:15 pm

The Brewers have drafted Jake Odorizzi with the third pick in the compensation round, which means the Mets are on the clock.

Update5:15 pm

The Mets have drafted RHP Brad Holt from UNC-Wilmington with the third pick in the compensation round.

Update6:45 pm

The Mets have drafted OF Javier Rodriguez, from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy High School, with the 22nd pick of the second round.

The Mets need young hitters, especially at 1B. Lets hope they manage to snag some. But I’ll hope for best available athlete early on.

  2. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

Oh yeah…can you feel the excitement?!?!

  3. Ryn05 says:

I’ll say it again, there’s a very high chance of a top 10 prospect making it to us at #18 due to money.

We better man up and give them the big bucks.

  4. dominicanboy08 says:

I just hope for another superstar like reyes and wright or an ace pitcher…

  5. CaseStreet says:

Why is this so exciting? I can’t explain it. I’ve been obsessed. Thank god it’ll be over soon.

    • Ryn05 says:

We essentially have 3 first round picks. This could be a huge part of our success in the future.

    • CaseStreet says:

      We’re going streaking!

      • theperfectgame says:

haha, saw that too, but figured it was obvious he meant streaming… pretty funny though

it’s funny, when you have too much to drink, you usually end up doing both

  6. altru426 says:

big money big money no whammies

  7. statnut says:

Good news, the Mets drafted P/1B Robert Scott.*

    *Negro League draft :)

  8. shea_guevara says:

If you’d like to watch the draft on ESPN 2, go to MLB.com, as they’re streaking it.

So do I need a credit card and password to view that site?

  9. vinluvr says:

Mets on the clock in about 1.5 hours

  10. hbean says:

    MLB.com is going streaking!

    whooooooooooo!!!!

  11. theperfectgame says:

Ha. MLB.com and CBSSports.com had their draft trackers updated before ESPN.com… and the draft is on ESPN!

  12. matlack says:

Justin Smoak has a great handle for headlines: ‘Justin Smoaked two homers”, “Smoakin”.

Does Wayne Hagin actually sound dissapointed the the Mets come through?

  13. CaseStreet says:

Thanks for the explanation Matt, but my boss isn’t buying it.

  14. dominicanboy08 says:

why they dont introduce the selected players for each team? they just say their names, thats it?. I think in football and basketball they introduce the players, right?

    • theperfectgame says:

Here’s Tim Beckham. Remember him, you’ll see him again in 2013…

    • Gina says:

Only if the players are in the green room, which is usually like the top 5 prospects or so.

  15. dave27 says:

I love when people make statements like “free-agency is dead.” Teams never locked up young players before? I seem to remember the Indians locking up all of their young studs in the early 90s, and yet I also remember a big free-agent hub-bub surrounding Manny Ramirez, and Albert Belle, and Jim Thome, and on and on. There will always be free-agents – even deals like Longoria’s will expire.

    • statnut says:

True. But most of those players hit FA after their prime. Thome hit FA at 32, Albert Belle at 30. Manny was 29. It a dicier proposition now, especially with revenue sharing, as teams have a little more money to lock up their young early. The days of Maddux hitting the market at 26/27 are largely over.

  16. JohnMilner says:

Boy, I just looked at the Mets’ #1 draft selections in the 90s. Oy.

    1998 Jason Tyner
    1997 Geoff Goetz
    1996 Robert Stratton
    1995 Ryan Jaroncyk
    1994 Terrence Long
    1994 Paul Wilson
    1993 Kirk Presley
    1992 Christopher Roberts
    1992 Preston Wilson
    1991 Alfred Shirley
    1990 Jeromy Burnitz

That’s some fairly slim pickings, and I don’t mean the actor!

  17. dominicanboy08 says:

dominican talent all-over, pedro alvarez is a dominican-american, the next arod

  18. SoCalMetsFan says:

It feels weird seeing that the top pick was born in the 1990s

  19. dominicanboy08 says:

erick hosmer went to the royals, someone predicted he will go to the mets

    • therealsince86 says:

That someone must have been insane.

      • Ryn05 says:

I’m guessing you saw Porcello going 28th last year too?

        • therealsince86 says:

No but that was a completely different situation. There was no way that the only true power hitter in the draft was going to fall to 18th.

        • Ryn05 says:

It’s not different because he’s a hitter instead of a pitcher.
They were both top 5 prep talents. Like Callis and all the talking heads were saying, teams are stepping up and taking the high priced players THIS YEAR unlike the past.

      • Metdamage says:

Controlling the most talented players is the life blood of the small market teams. They have cash so they aren’t going to worry about slotting.

  20. Ryn05 says:

    There goes Hosmer =/

  21. CaseStreet says:

Mayo is 3 for 3 so far.

  22. backinbusiness says:

Not to start a whole production, and this might not be in the Mets interest, but what is the explanation for the Latin American (actually, all international) kids not being in the First Year Player draft?

Just seems to create an apartheidish (please, obviously not) system whereby a prospect like F-Mart gets a lot less cash than his US HS counterpart.

Also, what are the rules for signing international FAs vs. HS players in terms of age? I assume a US 16 year old cannot sign…

    • Metdamage says:

I thought a US 16 year old could sign an MLB contract. I know the Mets have the Academy in the dominican and cannot sign those kids until they turn 16 but at a much cheaper rate. The fact that not a lot of info is available about that Academy is kind of alarming.

  23. dominicanboy08 says:

anyone knows what pick was david wright?

  24. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Whats up with saying all of these guys full named. If I were a Giants fan praying for them to select Buster Posy and the first words out of Selig’s mouth was “the San Francisco Giants select Gerald D….” I might have had a heart attack.

  25. CaseStreet says:

Now Mayo is four for four.

  26. Gina says:

It looks like we’re not even going to get an opportunity to go above the slot, who else was expected to fall?

  27. sheaheykid says:

DAMN! alonso is gone… this is shaping up exactly how i didnt want it do

  28. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Odd pick of Alonso. If I remember correctly, Votto can play corner OF, so I really don’t think they will have a problem finding room for both of them, but Gordon Beckham seemed like a much better fit for them.

  29. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, Smoak watch begins. Fall, baby fall!

  30. murdertron3000 says:

Interesting that the Marlins took Skipworth over Yonder.

  31. sheaheykid says:

cmon justin we wanna smell what you’re smoakin!!

  32. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

By the way, nobody is slotting….even the Reds.

If Omar has a chance to take a stud but doesn’t and slots, he needs to fired. Today.

I seriously think the Mets may be the only team left “slotting for Selig”

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, stop complaining about slotting. There is not one guy who we’ve passed up since Omar has been GM because of slotting. We just havnt had first round picks.

    • Metdamage says:

Clearly the trend of this draft so far is f-slotting so the Mets had better follow the trend.

      • Gina says:

I feel like the trend is f-mets. we finally have a first round pick, two in fact, and every team decides they’re going to ignore slotting rules.

  33. CaseStreet says:

Well, there goes Mayo’s streak. He had the Reds picking Gordon Beckham.

  34. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Good, bye bye Gordon.

  35. statnut says:

Starting to think Ike Davis is who the Mets will end up with.

  36. sheaheykid says:

Smoak on the watttter, gordon picked by Chi….

  37. raylyman78 says:

What are the odds of Steve Phillips finding a way to bash the Mets when the Mets are on the clock?

  38. statnut says:

What are the odds of the two guys with the same last name being taken in the Top 10, and not being related?

  39. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    YES!!

  40. Santanaman says:

    Hold your breath on #9

  41. Santanaman says:

Nationals took Crow, Smoak is still there

  42. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, so there are three teams who could resaonably select Smoak ahead of us. Houston and Texas with the next two picks, and then Toranto with the pick before us. Hold your breath you guys.

    • Gina says:

I don’t think he gets past Texas. They need pitching bad.

      • sheaheykid says:

so you mean you think he WILL get past Texas? Smoak is a first baseman…

        • Gina says:

Ugh I’m horrible with names. I must have seen him and some pitcher mentioned together and decided they were the same person.

In that case I think he’ll get past them. A friend of mine is a huge Rangers fan and according to him they have hitters for days in the minors. They just have no pitching.

    • statnut says:

Because they’re the Mets, he’ll go to Toronto.

  43. JohnMilner says:

What about Ron Davis’ boy, Ike?

  44. Santanaman says:

According to Mayo, Brett Wallace may be possible now if Smoak goes

  45. Gina says:

This seems to be going really slow.

  46. Ryn05 says:

    Woah, reach for Castro.

  47. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    YESSSS!!!!

  48. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, now I’m starting to believe.

  49. backinbusiness says:

Good, we won’t get another backup catcher Castro.

  50. theperfectgame says:

    Adios Castro

  51. metsfan42793 says:

Thats odd that the Astros picked Castro. Weren’t we projected to get him?

  52. JohnMilner says:

Ah, Jesus Flores, where have ye gone? That was truly a blunder…

  53. hyperion4 says:

Astros took Jason Castro. I’m glad — I didn’t want the Mets to go for him.

  54. sheaheykid says:

what’s with the run on catchers overall? aren’t they typically the most difficult position to project?

    • statnut says:

The scouting reports all say that each of them should remain at catcher, and that their hitting skills are top notch. All were projected first rounders. So in this case, its not out of the blue.

  55. sheaheykid says:

damn, im so fearful Toronto will take our boy Smoak… any word if Wallace is as nice?

  56. Ryn05 says:

    The A’s scare me here.

Whoever they choose is going to be a stud.

  57. CaseStreet says:

You’d think they’d want some pitching.

  58. Metdamage says:

Castro is gone. It looks like the talented armsare falling while the position players are getting gobbled up.

Tanner Scheppers was supposed to be gone by now. Same for Gerritt Cole so the Mets may have to look at pitching.

    • nrmax88 says:

Not true Metdamage, Cole was expected to fall way down, similar to Porcello. Wants a lot of money and I think he is repped by Boras. Scheppers wasnt expected to go yet either after his recent injury. I would love to scoop both of those guys up. They both have the talent to have already gone but it is not surprising to me that they havent gone yet. Scheppers would be gone if not for his injury.

      • Metdamage says:

I didn’t know Boras had Cole. I knew Scheppers had an injury but i saw mock drafts that had him going 9th. If the Mets can get either then that would be great.

  59. nrmax88 says:

Guys, the stros just took Jason Castro, which is absolutely amazing. I am so happy the Mets couldnt pick this guy and then tell us it is because they stuck to slot and got a catcher to move quick. Great news, did not want Castro at all. LETS GO BEST AVAILABLE TALENT COME ON WE CAN REVAMP OUR SYSTEM TODAY LETS DO THIS FRED AN JEFF AND OMAR!!!!!

  60. CaseStreet says:

Please let Smoak and Weeks drop. Smoak at 18 and Weeks at 22.

    • nrmax88 says:

Smoak never was going to fall to us. Weeks could have been nice, but I like Havens ALOT. This guy can play and will move fairly quickly through the system. I know he is listed as a SS, but I think he will be a good 2B. He reminds me a little bit of Dustin Pedroia or Placido Polanco. I also heard that some teams like him as a C, but I think he is more suited for 2B. I dont know as much about Ike Davis, but I hear he can also move quickly to the bigs, and can possibly even replace Delgado next year. LF is another possibility for him. I think these 2 picks were going to be the best college bats that fill needs, which I dont agree with at all in theory, but I do like these 2 picks, especially Havens. We’ll see if they take some guys who drop to them with their next few picks.

  61. JohnMilner says:

Y’know, one of the best things about this draft is seeing that Atlanta has no pick until #40. And, of course, that Tommy G. provide two of the picks to us.

  62. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Damnit!

  63. Ryn05 says:

    There goes Smoak

  64. Gina says:

=/. So Ike Davis it is?

  65. Metdamage says:

    Smoak gone

  66. Santanaman says:

    Smoak is gone to Texas

  67. sheaheykid says:

damn… up in a cloud of smoak

  68. metfanb says:

NOT IKE DAVIS HE SUX. i think jamiele weeks. they are comparing him to chase utley with less power but faster. he comes from the university of miami which is a great baseball school

  69. Maineiac says:

    IKE DAVIS!!!!!!!!!!!

    :(

  70. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I have zero interest in Ike Davis. We have three of him at AA already (Carp, Murphy and until recently, Evans.) All tremendously low celling corner infielders and corner outfielders.

  71. Don't mess with the Johan says:

I was hoping Smoak would go to Tampa bay or SF.

    Smo-o-o-oak on the water!

  72. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Damnit….

  73. KFS says:

Aaron Hicks is a stud. Might be available at 18.

  74. metfanb says:

    nvm there he goes

  75. theperfectgame says:

    damn you billy beane!

  76. metfanb says:

Now i am really going to cry

  77. sheaheykid says:

its like looking into the future when the A’s pick… you know he’s gonna be sick

  78. Philnym31 says:

    Maybe we go starting pitcher?

  79. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

    BYE BYE WEEKS

  80. hyperion4 says:

Gerrit Cole is still on the board. I wouldn’t overlook him.

  81. Maineiac says:

This is crap, we’re gonna end up with another Pelfrey and Humber or Mike Carp!

Does every team hate the Mets?

  82. metfanb says:

NO PITCHING… WE DNT NEED ANOTHER PELFREY

  83. sheaheykid says:

cbs has jemile weeks listed as OAKs pick… which is it him or hicks?

  84. i wanted Jemile Weeks :( Speed FTW!

  85. theperfectgame says:

Yeah, I’m starting to think a pitcher is the way to go. But really they need to just go BPA. (It’s just looking like that’s gonna be a pitcher, based on how many hitters are lying off the shelves.)

  86. metfanb says:

Now we need anthony hewit. They say he is the next hanley. he plays like david all out. he has power and speed.

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Yeah, but there are just as many scouts who hate the kid. We can’t use our first pick on a huge question mark. Maybe if he slips to our of our supplemental picks.

  87. so i’m still guessing we’ll pick Ike Davis…

  88. Metdamage says:

OK the Mets need to take pitchers 18 and 22nd and if Davis is there at 33 then take him.

  89. mex84 says:

I’m thinking we get Brett Lawrie, anyone else?

  90. metfanb says:

No ike davis. we should not get someone because they will be ready sooner.

    • theperfectgame says:

yup, BPA… no matter when they think he’ll be ready… you can always find a stopgap on the FA scrapheap, we don’t need to draft one…

    • npanzeca says:

This year is different because we really need to have young players who are ready to come up sooner so we don’t have to carry 3 catchers like this year because we have no mlb ready players to come up.

  91. metfanb says:

    who is brett Lawrie???

  92. Santanaman says:

The next best 1B just went in Wallace, this sucks

  93. metfanb says:

no pitchers i think we should go for power. we have speed in jose. we have no power. look for a first basemen. how about… (Fill in the blank)

  94. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Please fall, Aaron Hicks. BUut again, its a longshot.

  95. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

If not him, I’d rather have Brett Lowrie

  96. Gina says:

ugh did he say a run on relief pitchers.

  97. MudvilleNine says:

    Plenty of relievers left

  98. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    GODDMANIT!

  99. metfanb says:

I wouldnt give up hope. Pujols went in the 13th round and look at him. Maybe just this once we get a good pick

  100. theperfectgame says:

    and Hicks is gone

  101. npanzeca says:

    so much for Hicks

  102. Ryn05 says:

…and the New York Mets select Joshua Fields.

    • mex84 says:

The Braves tried to sign him last year and failed, how ironic would it be if we got him for Glavine!

  103. metfanb says:

We just drafted a relief pitcher last year. We got eddie kunz it would be a waste to get another reliever

  104. Dirtysanchez says:

    hicks gone

  105. Metdamage says:

Does anyone have anything on 1B Jason cooper?

  106. sheaheykid says:

SON OF A… damn, wanted hicks if not someone better

  107. Maineiac says:

What about Dykstra’s son? Is he in this draft?

  108. backinbusiness says:

Hicks could have pitched and then moved to OF as a defensive replacement for us!

  109. KFS says:

Hunt or Fredrich at this point

    • Ryn05 says:

His biggest adjustment will be learning to trust his stuff so he can keep his pitch counts down. He flashes a plus changeup in the bullpen, though he doesn’t use it much in games.

Sounds like a Met pitcher to me.

    • Santanaman says:

      Good call, I’ll take Hunt

  110. Ryn05 says:

    Hopefully:

    Tim Melville
    or
    Gerrit Cole

  111. npanzeca says:

Is there even anyone left that would be over slot? There has been a lot of talk about this and it may not even matter.

    • Ryn05 says:

      Not really.

Shooter Hunt if he fell to us would be the only real drop, BA had him as the 11th best prospect.

    • KFS says:

there are no small market teams anymore. it’s over.

    • sheaheykid says:

i think there must be a pitcher who would be over slot… how has there been only two pitchers selected in the one draft we were targeting position players… typical

      • MacD81 says:

Tom Glavine’s revenge. Somewhere he is laughing at us whilst twirling his wife’s mustache.

  112. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Is it just me or does Selig look drunk and have no idea what he is doing?

  113. Dirtysanchez says:

    martin to dodgers

  114. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Lets get Gerrit cole with that 22nd pick.

  115. metfanb says:

Ethan looked pretty good. Now we should go for a pitcher. absolutley no more hitters. tim meilville would be awesome is he fell to us.

  116. statnut says:

I’m thinking the Brewers take Lawrie here.

  117. Santanaman says:

Christian Friedrich is the second best Lefty avail. according to Mayo and he is still there

  118. Dirtysanchez says:

    alot of relief pitchers left………………

  119. KFS says:

Zach Collier could be worth a flyer with the 18th or 22nd. Apparently took Hicks deep when they played against each other.

  120. why does selig pick his nose after he annmounces every pick? :o (no pun intended)

  121. krumbledkookie says:

    Lawrie’s gone.

  122. backinbusiness says:

so whats the deal? canada is in the draft but puerto rico is not?

  123. the Straw says:

Wow a ton of catchers gone. I just dont understand why. How many Brian McCanns are out there???

  124. Santanaman says:

    FRIEDRICH is my call

  125. Ryn05 says:

We’re in a good spot, Cole or Friedrich.

    • Ryn05 says:

Cole is the best righthander out of Southern California since Phil Hughes starred at Santa Ana’s Foothills High in 2004.

    • Ryn05 says:

Friedrich operated in the mid-80s as an undrafted high school senior in the Chicago area before blossoming in college. He now maintains solid-average 89-91 mph velocity throughout a game and can touch 94, but his money pitch is an over-the-top curveball with huge 12-to-6 break

      • theperfectgame says:

Damn, if he was an undrafted high school senior in the mid-80s he’s older than I am! Stay away Omar!!

      • Gina says:

If his money pitch is a curve ball we definitely shouldn’t draft him.

  126. oh boy we’re next…i’m scared :(

  127. mex84 says:

Jays missed on their Canadian boy Lawrie.

  128. huge_mets_fan11 says:

ESPN has been praising everyone’s pick so far, watch when we pick they will bash it.

  129. statnut says:

Another guess: Jays take Casey Kelly, which would be out of character for them.

  130. AzMetsFan says:

whats the time frame between picks?

  131. metfanb says:

I agree with Zach Collier. the only problem is that he is an all out guy. hr or out like adam dunn. he has great speed so that would be a great asset. very young. they say he is a carlos beltran with more power and less contact

  132. WrightsRight says:

Mets should get Ryan Leaf. I hear he’s good.

  133. Ryn05 says:

We could really end up with 2 good pitchers at 18 and 22.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I agree. I know that the mets people know much much more about this than be, and I have no right to be saying this, but if we take Ike Davis, I’m gonna freekin flip.

    • theperfectgame says:

or a middle reliever and a future fourth outfielder!

  134. Metdamage says:

Mets will have their pick of the pitchers. Either Cole, Melville or Joshua Fields is going to be a NY Met.

  135. Santanaman says:

Cashner is also there, it looks like we have to go with pitching which is not a bad idea

  136. sheaheykid says:

damn im so nervous… its so funny too bc in football im just curious to see who gets taken… here im so nervous it will be a (what my non-scout mind deems to be a) bad pick

  137. gipper82475 says:

Let’s Go Mets! On the clock!

  138. AzMetsFan says:

Get ready to hear the name we are going to be lovin or hatin for the next decade

  139. sheaheykid says:

agree with above, please no ike davis

  140. statnut says:

I’m hoping the Mets take Melville, but I bet Davis is the pick here.

  141. napes22 says:

    Take Gerrit Cole :D

  142. Ryn05 says:

CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH, LHP, Eastern Kentucky DO IT OMAR

  143. sheaheykid says:

not that i thought we’d take him (cooper), but hilarious another first baseman is taken.

  144. krumbledkookie says:

Wasn’t Hunt supposed to go pretty high? HIgher than this?

  145. hyperion4 says:

I’m shuddering at the brickbats that will fall from this forum if the Mets don’t make a good (or popular) pick . . .

  146. MudvilleNine says:

I just want to see who I’ll be watching in Brooklyn

  147. Dirtysanchez says:

AND THEY ARE ON THE CLOCK!!

  148. statnut says:

Of course, if the Mets take Melville here, and get Davis at 22, I’d be fine with that. Or vice versa.

  149. metsfan119 says:

    Gerrit Cole still available

  150. CaseStreet says:

    Wallace?

  151. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Omar might get killed here for not taking offense, but by far the best players on the board now are pitchers. Lets go, Omar.

  152. AzMetsFan says:

    Just pick a Superstar!

    • theperfectgame says:

Yeah, I don’t care who it is, so long as he hits like A-Rod and pitches like Santana.

  153. metfanb says:

IF WE TAKE IKE OMAR SHOULD BE FIRED. IKE DAVIS IS EVERYTHING I DNT WANT. HE IS THE NEXT DELGADO!

  154. Who ever we pick, we must remember…they better be a superstar or else…

  155. Metdamage says:

    Gerritt Cole f the slotting!

  156. GravediggerHebner says:

    Please no college relief pitcher

  157. Philnym31 says:

Lets take a pitcher here and then draft a hitter next turn

  158. statnut says:

If the Mets are willing to go above slot, maybe they take Casey Kelly?

  159. Horseman says:

Should we start booing so the new guy gets use to the fans?

  160. Santanaman says:

    Can’t stand the wait!!!!!!!!!

  161. krumbledkookie says:

    Damn.

  162. CaseStreet says:

    Friedrich

  163. mex84 says:

    Ike Davis!

  164. Maineiac says:

    SOB

  165. theperfectgame says:

    saw that coming………………..

  166. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    oh screw it!

  167. Metdamage says:

    Ike Davis

  168. AzMetsFan says:

Are we the first team to have our 2nd pick?

  169. statnut says:

Mets fans just jumped off the bridge.

  170. KFS says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  171. Ryn05 says:

You have to be kidding me.

    FRIEDRICH!!

  172. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Congrats, we just got Mike Carp Jr.

    …I hope I’m wrong.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I was thinking Carlos Delgado Jr. but then I saw Ike’s picture, Carp Jr. it is!

  173. metsfan119 says:

It’s all a crapshoot anyway, but still, don’t let the slotting BS dictate what you do

  174. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Get Cole at 22 and make up for this pick.

  175. MetLifer says:

Anybody seen the mock draft from mymlbdraft? They had Friedrich going at #10 and he’s available.

  176. Horseman says:

Can’t wait to see him fouling off pitches in the majors.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Is that a reference to his MLB.com prospect video where they showed him hitting a foul ball? If so, I was just having a huge laugh about that.

  177. MacD81 says:

    “I like Ike.”

Worst quote in the new Indy movie or worst quote by Omar? You decide.

  178. metfanb says:

i am going to hang myself. c ya guys good luck with the rest of the draft

  179. Ryn05 says:

The son of former big league reliever Ron Davis, Ike was not a scouts’ favorite coming into his junior season. A decorated high school career that included a star turn with Team USA’s youth national squad and an MVP award at the 2004 Aflac Classic, and his pitching family pedigree, had most scouts regarding him as a pitcher out of high school. He decided to go to Arizona State rather than sign as a Rays 19th-round pick, and he started on the mound and batted cleanup in his first game as a Sun Devil. He struggled with wood in the Alaska League in 2006 and in the Cape in 2007, when he cut his summer short to have right wrist surgery. He returned to the mound as a closer in 2008 and played first base to keep his arm fresh. He also worked to incorporate his lower half more and was having a banner season, leading the Sun Devils in the triple crown categories as well as saves, before missing time with a ribcage injury. Davis has excellent raw power, comparing to former ASU star Jeff Larish, but he’s a much better defender with a better swing and better pitch recognition. Davis is above-average at first base and should be able to play an outfield corner as well due to his plus arm; his below-average speed could limit him to left.

  180. Airfeet says:

    come onnnnnnnnnn

  181. Ryan Synagogue says:

lol even the scouts are like “meh”

  182. Philnym31 says:

    I hope Gerrit Cole lasts

  183. sheaheykid says:

    Davis? F#$% me man. seriously

  184. Airfeet says:

I dont know anything about these players but its funny how everyone said dont take Ike Davis and of course the mets take Davis

  185. Maineiac says:

    Mike Carp
    Nick Evans
    Ike Davis
    Ryan Church
    Xavier Nady

    All the same players…

  186. Dirtysanchez says:

    davis…

  187. djbutler says:

If Ike’s power bat doesn’t work out they can make him a pitcher. He can throw in the 90s, but he needs work on the breaking ball according to Keith law.

  188. the Straw says:

next two picks better be starting pitchers. the kind with good enough stuff and a good head on their shoulders.

I want the Next John Maine X2.

  189. metsfan119 says:

    Thanks Mr. Coupon

  190. beltran the warrior says:

    omar likes ike.

  191. Metdamage says:

Ok they didn’t get ripped for taking Ike Davis. He could be a nice addition to the farm system but does this mean that Carp is on the way out?

  192. napes22 says:

Terrible pick with Cole on the board.

  193. WrightsRight says:

Maybe Ike Davis becomes Phil Simms….

  194. Philnym31 says:

Next pick better be a pitcher, Cole or Friedrich

  195. metfanb says:

No we get gerit cole. he looks like the next joba. his slider is sick. and his change up is almost like johans. it is a 12mph difference and you cant tell the difference in his motion.

  196. MacD81 says:

    Law’s analysis on ESPN.com:

“The Mets said they wanted to focus on college bats with their first two picks, and Davis was probably the best hitter left on the board. His pitch recognition is good, and he has a clean swing once he gets it started. 30-plus homer power in the big leagues if everything clicks. He’s also a good defender with a plus arm at first base. ”

I don’t know anything about these guys. Why was everyone so down on him?

    • hyperion4 says:

BA’s mock actually had Davis going 17th, so this is not some sort of off-the-wall pick.

  197. heart of the city says:

we need a 2nd basemen and 1st basemen … i think we got the outfield covered ..09 fernando martinez in left field !!!!!!!!! CROSS FINGERS hope he will be ready by next season

    cf beltran
    lf martinez
    rf church

    • npanzeca says:

If he is to be ready next year he better start being healthy enough to play THIS season.

  198. beltran the warrior says:

what does this mean for lucas duda? we’re going to have a bunch of guys changing positions in the minor leagues.

  199. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Anyone else notice that right before the Mets picked they had the camera on the Mets drafting desk and the guy there had his hands up like “What do we do?’

  200. Santanaman says:

Lets see we passed on the second best lefty in the draft to take the fifth best 1B. wow

  201. the Straw says:

this may sound like total over-thinking. but by taking a 1st baseman with their 1st pick, does this mean they have no desire to sign Teixeira after this year???

  202. Ryn05 says:

Be happy guys, we didn’t take Cashner.

  203. npanzeca says:

We need a 1b guys and this seemed to be the best one we could hope for at this spot. Give him a chance.

  204. Maineiac says:

To those who didn’t believe me that Omar is horrible when it comes to the farm system… maybe you’ll believe me now?

    18th pick… Issac Davis

    • GravediggerHebner says:

he was excellent as Chef on South Park but isn’t he kind of old?

  205. twassel says:

Keith Law’s analysis on ESPN.com: The Mets said they wanted to focus on college bats with their first two picks, and Davis was probably the best hitter left on the board. His pitch recognition is good, and he has a clean swing once he gets it started. He has 30-plus homer power in the big leagues if everything clicks. He’s also a good defender with a plus arm at first base.

  206. mex84 says:

Friedrich and Cole still there, we will get one of them!

  207. theperfectgame says:

Look on the bright side fellas, at least we can’t draft Ike Davis at #22 :-)

  208. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Please, please, pleaseeeeee take Cole at 22, Omar.

  209. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

I think all you people are so idiotic…none of you have any idea what this kid will be in the pros…you’re just b*tchin to B*tch….

    • mex84 says:

      Thank you

    • GravediggerHebner says:

While I agree on the “no idea” part, I disagree on the other points. All I know about these players is what I read written by the supposed experts, and the supposed experts say this was not the best guy at 18, that’s why I’m b*tchin. I hope I and all the experts are wrong.

  210. kandiman says:

I love how people on here are pissed at a draft pick as if you know hes gonna be a bust.

Some people just read 1 scouting report and become convinced. I’ll take the mets scouting department over you guys anyday

    • napes22 says:

We aren’t pissed about that. We just are annoyed that we didn’t take the best talent. We overdrafted Davis

  211. napes22 says:

We need a 1B so we draft the best left with an early pick, rather than taking the best available player.

It’s like sinking a canoe with a torpedo.

  212. metsfan119 says:

I’m sure the big spending Tigers will take Cole or Friedrich

  213. Philnym31 says:

Definitely a starting pitcher at 22

  214. Santanaman says:

Cashner or Friedrich would have been great. Cashner is gone to the Cubs

    • npanzeca says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m reading that Cashner is a RP and nobody here wanted a RP.

  215. Maineiac says:

Ok the Cubs are dumber then us. They picked a guy with velocity but little control.

    1st relief pitcher.

  216. metfanb says:

hey guys we r forgetting about the players we have in the minors right now like dan murphey. he is a monster but where will he play. where will carp play where will ike davis play.

    • npanzeca says:

Ike Davis may be better than them. He seems like a good defensive player which Carp is not.

  217. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Apparently people are saying bad things about Brett Wallace’s “Lower Half.” Ha, sounded funny.

  218. CaseStreet says:

Mayo has us taking SS Havens next.

    • Maineiac says:

Why a shortstop. Jose will be our shortstop for the next 10 years or so, while Castillo will be our second basemen for the next 4.

  219. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I’m terrified that Detroit will take Cole.

  220. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Fields is gone. Good.

  221. KFS says:

Well, at least Omar didn’t draft a Latino guy:)

  222. Ryan Synagogue says:

    Cmon Cole

  223. Metdamage says:

    Cole is going to Detroit

  224. hyperion4 says:

So Friedrich or Cole will be availalbe at 22. But don’t be surprised if the Mets pick Gillaspie.

  225. Ryn05 says:

    Okay, take two.

    CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH!

  226. backinbusiness says:

Good SP left….please please Omar no RP.

  227. metfanb says:

    who is havens???

    • KFS says:

Coming off a strong showing in the Cape Cod League last summer when he hit .314 with five home runs, Havens positioned himself to be one of the top middle infielders in this draft class. Steady and durable, Havens has been a fixture in the middle of the diamond for the Gamecocks since his freshman year. His consistency in always being in the lineup parallels his consistent improvement offensively and defensively every season since arriving in Columbia. Drafted out of high school by the Rockies in the 29th round, Havens has improved his range, hands and agility and now has the defensive ability and arm strength to stay at shortstop in the professional ranks. He makes up for his lack of foot speed with proper routes to the ball and advanced instincts. At the plate, Havens changed his hand position this season, moving them lower to an unconventional location around the bellybutton. Scouts have split opinions on his new batting style, but he he has hit for better power and average and leads off for a strong South Carolina lineup. He has great makeup and is a prototype “baseball player” with all the intangibles.

      - per Baseball America

  228. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Also why does Selig say where each University is located? “From the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. Sounds so stupid.

    • theperfectgame says:

Yeah, for the University of Georgia it sounds stupid, but not everyone knows where Rice, or Marshall, or Ball State are.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I hope a player is drafted from IUPUI

  229. Coolpapabell says:

Well, at least Omar got his guy. It better work out.

  230. huge_mets_fan11 says:

    Hopefully Detroit takes a reliever

  231. metsfan119 says:

Tigers won’t dick around, they actually develop good players

  232. Maineiac says:

The Mets have to get the best pitcher available because the Phillies are 24th.

  233. Philnym31 says:

We need to take a starting pitcher here, either Cole or Friedrich.

  234. hyperion4 says:

Detroit is pretty sure to select Cole.

  235. Philnym31 says:

    YES!

  236. theperfectgame says:

    Perry to Detroit

  237. Maineiac says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  238. nymrod says:

    Here comes the reach catcher.

  239. metfanb says:

YAY!!!! WE GOT IT NOW WE NEED TO GET GERIT COLE. I AM FEELING GOOD ABOUT THIS DRAFT!!!!

  240. Ryn05 says:

FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH FRIEDRICH

  241. Philnym31 says:

    Gerrit Cole or Christian Friedrich!

  242. KFS says:

    Hunt, Cole, or Freidrich

  243. CaseStreet says:

    Friedrich please

  244. hyperion4 says:

    Tigers select Perry!

  245. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Cole!!

  246. metsfan119 says:

No faith the Mets will take the best player available

  247. AzMetsFan says:

how come no one is picking this Friedrick and Coles that you guys are speaking so highly about?

  248. anthony.velli says:

some of you dudes are thinkin about this draft like its football. teams usually don’t draft to fill need. drafting a 1st baseman, even if he pans out, won’t solve our problem at first till 2010 at earliest. + most players can play multiple positions or at least be taught to. that pick has nothing to do with us not going after texiera.

  249. Metdamage says:

    Matt wants Dykstra’s son

  250. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

    TAKE DYKSTRA HERE!!!

  251. metfanb says:

look up both guys at milb.com and u will se why. they are both dirty but i think cole is better

  252. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

If they take Gillaspie… uugh god I dont want to even think about it.

  253. statnut says:

    C’mon Melville.

  254. KFS says:

    Take the power arm…idiota!

  255. the Straw says:

Pick Darren McFadden. Come on…..i mean….nevermind.

  256. Ryn05 says:

    WHAT THE F…

  257. Maineiac says:

    WTF?

  258. statnut says:

    I guess its Safe Havens.

  259. KFS says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  260. mex84 says:

    wtf

  261. GravediggerHebner says:

Havens = Future catcher per Gammons

  262. WrightsRight says:

I guess Reyes is not in the Mets’ long term plans…?

    • WrightsRight says:

      …note sarcasm…

there’s gotta be some logic behind this pick….but i don’t see it. then again, i’m sitting at my desk at work on my computer……

  263. Maineiac says:

Is this a joke? Omar you suck cock.

  264. Ryn05 says:

    David Eckstein 2.0

  265. the Straw says:

A Shortstop? Come on. Thats probably the one position you dont need to worry about for the next oh say 15 years!!!!

  266. statnut says:

Scouting report says Havens may have to move to third, so maybe the Mets are preparing to move Wright to 2B or 1B down the road. On the plus side, he was born in 1986!

    • MacD81 says:

      so he’s already 22?

      ….

Isn’t that getting a bit old for a drafted player?

    • AzMetsFan says:

      October of 06!

he’s a junior in college so thats a reasonable age

    • Airfeet says:

Wright is not a 2bman thats an outrageous comment…if anything maybe they will move him to first base…and you dont move a superstar to a different position for a prospect to take over…oh and wright did win the gold glove last year

  267. krumbledkookie says:

I dunno, Keith Law likes him.

  268. kandiman says:

    THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!

  269. CaseStreet says:

Meet our new 2B. goodbye Castillo. Mayo’s a genius or a witch.

  270. napes22 says:

    WTF!!!!!!!

  271. Ryn05 says:

Coming off a strong showing in the Cape Cod League last summer when he hit .314 with five home runs, Havens positioned himself to be one of the top middle infielders in this draft class. 272. Maineiac says:

    Phillies get cole… automatic.

  273. Airfeet says:

all the analysts say hes a good pick chill out…he’ll be our new catcher that hits .325…it woulda been nice to get a power arm though

  274. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Everyone on ESPN loves the pick, so I can’t complain.

  275. djbutler says:

David Havens is a GREAT pick! Stop hating if you don’t know.

  276. gipper82475 says:

Keith Law: Excellent pick – a ballplayer with great instincts, can easily move to 2nd. Slappy’s replacement.

  277. metsfan119 says:

Oh well, I haven’t actually seen any of these guys play so I’ll just hope for the best

  278. Philnym31 says:

I can’t believe we haven’t taken a starting pitcher yet.

  279. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    oh god….

  280. WrightsRight says:

didn’t this guy sing at Woodstock…?

  281. Metdamage says:

Everyone likes Haven except the blog.

  282. backinbusiness says:

Maybe I’m going to pitch for the Mets. Sweet!

  283. Maineiac says:

    When is our next pick?

    • Maineiac says:

11 picks. Cole is gone by then, and so is any chance of having a legit ace.

    • kandiman says:

      33

Due to his lack of exceptional tools, Havens probably would have gone at least 30 picks later a few years ago. However, there were a lot of teams interested in him at the end of the first round or in the the supplemental round this year. He didn’t seem likely to last at shortstop anyway, and he certainly won’t now that he’s a Met. However, he could turn out to be an excellent second baseman and there were some teams that really liked his potential as a catcher. He’s a nice pick.

      Relax Maneiac

    • backinbusiness says:

      33 i think

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      33

  284. hyperion4 says:

Well, Keith Law’s comments reassured me a bit. If Havens becames a major league 2B for the Mets, that could work out well.

  285. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

So much for taking the best player available.

…or hell, for that matter, even taking a position we need.

  286. huge_mets_fan11 says:

What pick do we have next?

  287. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Thats not Lenny’s son everyone. Don’t get worked up over it.

  288. Santanaman says:

This is crazy Dykstra goes on the very next pick

  289. WrightsRight says:

okay….the chatter is easing my mind a bit. Guy seems flexible – catcher, 2B perhaps?

  290. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

    lol and there goes Dykstra

  291. Metdamage says:

Havens sounds like a “grinder” type player that hits for average.
Keep in mind that the Mets really have no position players in the system that grade highly besides Martinez.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Great, a “grinder.” In other words, he’s a white kid who trys hard but has no skills. Fantastic…

      • nrmax88 says:

Nah Jose, this kid can play. He just hits, and just plays baseball. He doesnt have a standout tool, but he is above average everywhere but possibly in the power department. Great batspeed, should hit for average too, and could help quickly if Castillo goes down or just doesn’t produce.

    • metfanb says:

sounds like a pretty good ballplayer you might of heard of him. his name is
      David Wright

  292. no! they took Dykstra!!! we have failed at creating the second coming of the 86 mets :(

  293. Santanaman says:

The Phills will get the pitcher we wanted and we will be talking about it for a long time

  294. AzMetsFan says:

So far im happy with these picks. ASU has great baseball talent and SS make great 2nd baseman. Both guys seem very flexible in their positions too, so thats a bonus. Hopefully they pan out for us. Now lets hope for some magic in the later rounds.

  295. nrmax88 says:

I like Havens ALOT.

I know I can easily find this myself, but can somebody list me the Mets picks in the top 100 please if they happen to know?

    • statnut says:

I’m in full agreement with you on Havens. I’m hoping he can be up by 2011, and replace Castillo. Maybe even late 2010.

  296. Ryan Synagogue says:

PHEW! Phillies took a middle infielder

    • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Hewitt was 0-Summer last year according to Keith Law -4-6 years away.

    • AzMetsFan says:

that may decide on going to Vanderbuilt instead! Nice!

    • Maineiac says:

He’ll likely be an outfielder in the future. Decent, but at least he is not an ace. Hopefully the Yankees go for a position player also.

  297. KFS says:

    high risk high reward huh?

    • nrmax88 says:

Yes, huge reward, high risk. This guy could be an absolute stud, but that is if everything falls perfectly for him. Probably a better chance that he is a bust though.

  298. WrightsRight says:

looks like Jimmy Rollins loafing today has resulted in the Phils taking a SS….

    • kandiman says:

the kid was in high school. Where does the best athlete on a team in high school play???

SS, you can’t project where they are going to play in the majors on what they play in HS

    • nymrod says:

      lmho.

  299. Ryn05 says:

Well, we could still end up with a good pitcher.

It seems everyone is ignoring them.

  300. Metdamage says:

If Cole goes to the Yankees will there be a blog riot?

  301. metfanb says:

i will go berserke if the yankees get cole

    • KFS says:

Watch the Yankees take Casey Kelly who’s already committed to play QB for Tennessee. Can anyone say Drew Henson?

  302. Ryn05 says:

    Freidrich a Rockie.

    Thank you Omar.

  303. metfanb says:

    good pick by colorado

  304. metfanb says:

the mets will end up getting shooter hunt or tim meilvile

  305. backinbusiness says:

OT: just saw the torrealba/kemp fight on youtube and i’m so glad we don’t have him (torrealba).

  306. Maineiac says:

I was looking at Frederich and he doesn’t look too exciting. But I do think he can be an average to above average pitcher.

  307. Ryn05 says:

Omar, it’s time to man up:

    Give Alex Meyer big bucks.

Meyer threw his fastball from 92-95 mph, and his hard breaking ball was even nastier. Just like that, he was tabbed as a potential first-rounder for the 2008 draft. This spring, Meyer has continued to show the talent to go in the bottom of the first round, but clubs don’t think he’ll sign even if he does go that high.

Meyer throws his pitches on a steep downward plane, thanks to his 6-foot-7, 200-pound frame. Unlike many big pitchers, he doesn’t have much difficulty keeping his mechanics in sync and repeating his delivery, the result of the athleticism that makes him an all-conference center for his high school basketball team.

If Meyer does opt for the Wildcats over pro ball, it’s easy to envision him in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick in 2011.

  308. nymrod says:

Given Cashman’s record, I will be psyched the Mets didn’t pick whichever pitcher the Yankees take.

    • gomets6091 says:

yea, I’d hate to have Joba in our bullpen.

then again, with the Mets, he’d probably still be starting in AA, so I guess it’s ok.

  309. napes22 says:

I just hope we don’t take a Rice pitcher with our next. Bad news.

Yankees will take Cole hands down. Sigh…

  310. KFS says:

How do you go from picking Aaron Hicks to picking Carlos Gutierrez!?

  311. Metdamage says:

Off Topic- Watching Kyle Farnsworth makes me think Aaron Heilman is not so terrible after all.

  312. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Damnit…..

  313. KFS says:

    DAMN YANKEES!

  314. Metdamage says:

As I predicted. Cole to the Yankees.

  315. Ryn05 says:

    Hunt or Melville at 33.

  316. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, only 4 teams until us. We still might get Shooter.

    • KFS says:

Of course, we’ve already passed on him twice so a 3rd time would not surprise me.

  317. kandiman says:

Here comes the carnage, we didn’t get cole, oh no!!

  318. Airfeet says:

so basically the yanks are spending money on this cole kid because no one else wants to pay him bills…which is why he wasnt drafted much earlier in hte draft??

    • KFS says:

      bit more:

Cole does bring mechanical concerns. He lands on a stiff front leg, and he recoils his arm during his follow-through. Both hurt control and raise injury concerns. Complicating the situation, Cole’s adviser is the Scott Boras Corp., which may eliminate many clubs from consideration. Cole also hasn’t endeared himself to scouts or teammates with what one scout described as his immature mound demeanor.

    • hyperion4 says:

There’s always a reason to be concerned about drafting a high school pitcher.

  319. kandiman says:

I can’t wait for Gerritt Cole night at Yankee staudium in a year and a half.

Hes going to be yet another ridiculously over-hyped prosepct

  320. metsfan119 says:

You wonder if Pelfrey has scared the Mets off from drafting these high priced first round pitchers

  321. Maineiac says:

    Shooter Hunt!

  322. Ryn05 says:

CONOR GILLASPIE, 3B, Wichita State, our pick at 33.

    Calling it now.

  323. Maineiac says:

Well the Indians drafted a criminal, so Omar’s next pick won’t be as bad as that.

  324. Metdamage says:

Minor league baseball website compares Melville to Phil Hughes. In a good way stuff wise not the injury-prone bad way.

    • Ryn05 says:

A number of teams don’t like to take high school righthanders early in the draft, and that bias may be all that stands in the way of Holt High producing a first-round pitcher for the second straight year. Holt High grad and Missouri State product Ross Detwiler went sixth overall in 2007, and while Melville won’t go that high, he’s the top high school arm for 2008. Melville hasn’t pitched as well as he did last summer, when he tore up the showcase circuit, with his velocity slightly down and his curveball losing some tightness. He struggled in his first two starts but was throwing better as the draft approached, operating from 91-94 mph with his fastball and flashing a plus curve on a more regular basis. Melville is a very athletic 6-foot-5, 210-pounder who could be a star third baseman at the college level. He repeats his stress-free delivery with ease, allowing him to fill the strike zone. As a pro, he’ll have to throw more two-seam fastballs and changeups. Melville probably won’t follow through on his commitment to North Carolina unless he somehow falls out of the first round, and that would be an upset.

  325. npanzeca says:

Interesting pick for Cleveland: arrested for bugulary and grand larceny.

  326. metsfan119 says:

If the Mets can draft a guy named Shooter, I’ll be happy

  327. CaseStreet says:

Nah, we’re taking Brett DeVall. Best LHP out of HS.

    • CaseStreet says:

Or Hunt if they want a College pitcher, but he seems to have control issues with 42 walks in 77 innings.

  328. mex84 says:

Im all for Shooter, what a name. Reminds me of Turk Wendell.

  329. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Yea! Two more teams left before us. C’mon Shooter.

  330. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    What!? 15 mins, lol? Damnit.

  331. MetLifer says:

Looks like the Mets are going after polished, college level position players that can probably shoot through the system and be up here in 2 years.

  332. statnut says:

    Melville, Mets make it happen.

  333. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Oh boy, after listening to him talk, I sure am glad we didn’t take Josh Fields lol.

  334. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Melville or Hunt would work here. Come on, Omar!

  335. napes22 says:

Anyone else feel like we drafted a two mid level prospects rather than taking the top guy?

Nothing against our picks so far, but I can’t see either of these guys being ranked higher than a low B level prospect. But who knows, before 2006 Joey Votto was expected to be a 15-20 HR guy.

    • statnut says:

I dont know, scouts and experts seem to like those two guys. I dont think there were really any great picks at those two spots. It’s not like they passed up a top 5 or 10 prospect, you know?

      • Ryn05 says:

They could both end up being great picks. They’re also safe picks, and fans tend to want the flashier picks.

It’s just like the NFL draft all over again.

      • gomets6091 says:

exactly: everyone’s bitching and moaning about these 2 guys, but it looks like all the potential “over-slot” players that the fans wanted were already taken early in the round. The only guys left that the fans wanted were pitchers, which the Mets obviously weren’t targeting, and I’m fine with that. I like “best available,” but I also like drafting offense more than pitching, b/c it’s much more predictable. Just look at some of the all-star pitchers from last year who weren’t first round selections:

        Brandon Webb – 8th round
        Jake Peavy – 15th round
        Roy Oswalt – 23rd round
        Dan Haren – 2nd round
        Brad Penny – 5th round
        Chris Young – 3rd round

obviously, there is pitching talent available in later rounds. Just gotta get lucky with it.

  336. AzMetsFan says:

Just picked up tickets to see our 1st round pick at the Regional Tournament this weekend, ASU vs. Fresno

  337. Metdamage says:

    Giambi 2-run walk-off homer.

  338. AzMetsFan says:

is there less time between picks in the later rounds?

  339. WatchReyesRun says:

I don’t respect anyone that wants Cutter. The draft is for making your team BETTER, not acquiring guys that have connections with a Mets team two decades ago.

  340. metsfan119 says:

The Mets may draft Shooter…and Grizzly Adams had a beard

  341. Metdamage says:

    More Ike Davis news:

    Sophmore year; .346 7hr, 22 dbls
    Last year; .394 16hr in 46 games.

The kid can swing a bat.

  342. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    uugh, there goes Hunt

  343. Metdamage says:

Shooter gone. So Melville or something else….

  344. Jay says:

Shooter gone. Who is the best pitcher left?

  345. There goes shooter

  346. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Ok, Melville is there! Lets go

  347. mex84 says:

    Mellville?

  348. backinbusiness says:

    “control issues” – no thanks.

  349. KFS says:

Melville or Meyer at this point.

  350. Metdamage says:

    More info on Havens;

    Last year; .359 18hr in 63 games.

  351. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Who?

    • Ryn05 says:

Holt emerged this spring as the ace of a surging Seahawks baseball team. His fastball has improved since arriving in Wilmington and now sits between 92-94 mph, touching 96. Not only does he have a big arm, but he is able to maintain his velocity deep into games. However, the major difference between this year’s Holt from the past is his vastly improved command. Holt at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, has a perfect pro body with a clean delivery and a first-round arm. He is coordinated and athletic on the mound, attacking hitters with his fastball. The only thing holding him back is the lack of a usable secondary pitch. He offers a slider with loose spin and tends to slow his body and arm down when throwing it. Even though his secondary stuff is in need of refinement, teams will not walk away from the pro body, strong arm and life on the fastball.

      • Jay says:

Sounds like Pelfrey… But hey, let’s hope for the best.

      • gipper82475 says:

Counds like a reliever unles his secondary stuff develops quickly (see: Pelfrey, Mike)

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

        Thank you sir!

      • AzMetsFan says:

I was really excited up until that secondary pitch problem. That seems critical.

      • dave27 says:

Perfect pro body, strong arm, life on the fastball…sounds like a Mets pick.

        • nrmax88 says:

Holt is a very interesting guy. He is a college starter that burst onto the scene this year because his velocity moved from 90-92 to 93-96. He shows that he knows what he is doing out there. He has a good slider, but doesn’t throw it with consitency yet, and has shown the ability to throw a good changeup. He is a starter who can move quickly, lacks any ijury history, and has good command of a plus fastball. He has the potential for 3 plus pitches.

  352. Airfeet says:

why didnt they show a clip of HOlt!?!?!??

    • Ryn05 says:

      They likely didn’t have one.

BA had him as the 98th best prospect.

      • theperfectgame says:

Well what does Baseball America know? It’s not like they devote a ton of time and energy to researching and comparing minor league players or anything.

    • KFS says:

      take a good guess.

      • gipper82475 says:

Not good when first reaction of ESPN guys to our pick is “so, what’s the staregy in supplemenmtal round – to take a flyer on a longshot?”

  353. Airfeet says:

98th best prospect…that was the 33rd pick uh oh

  354. Maineiac says:

    Next pick is 68. UGH!

  355. Maineiac says:

Why didn’t we get Melville? Omar you are crazy.

  356. Ryn05 says:

Teams must think Tim Melville won’t sign.

  357. CaseStreet says:

That blows. I was hoping for DeVall.

  358. Airfeet says:

Omar only understands Latinos…has no clue what these white americans can do

  359. Ryn05 says:

    DeVall to the Braves.

That one will hurt in a few years.

  360. napes22 says:

Omar’s buy low technique doesn’t apply to drafts. Why would we take such a low rated guy – we saw how the lack of a secondary pitch is hurting Pelfrey.

Sigh…way to blow it Omar. So many better arms out there.

    • nrmax88 says:

I love how you act like you have any idea what you are talking about. Odds are, you know nothing about any of these guys. Every team wanted Pelfrey, and the fact that you talk about Pelfrey as if he is already a bust shows what you know about drafting.

  361. Maineiac says:

Now is the draft over at 6, or is ESPN’s coverage of it over at 6?

  362. Maineiac says:

68th pick and then 100th pick next.

  363. Jay says:

Yanks are going to take melville

  364. mex84 says:

Melville to us at 68, get it done Omar!

  365. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Wow, teams must really think that Melville won’t sign. Yankees even passed up on him.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

…and so did the Sox. Odd.

      • Maineiac says:

Who is his agent? Did Tim say he wouldn’t sign this year? It certainly is odd why teams are passing over him.

    • backinbusiness says:

maybe he will go to STL, he’s from MO? what college has he committed to?

  366. backinbusiness says:

    MELVILLE, from Baseball America:

Melville had an uneven spring and also has informed teams through a letter that he will not sign unless he’s treated like a top-15 pick. He’s a North Carolina recruit.

  367. gipper82475 says:

    Winfield is a smart guy.

  368. Maineiac says:

When will there be a next pick? Are they taking a break?

  369. Maineiac says:

Cutter has been drafted by the Brewers.

  370. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Mets are picking at 68. After the 58th pick, Melville is still on the board.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

If we could get him this late and muster up enough money to get him signed, this could be a huge baseball and PR win for Omar.

  371. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Our Pick! Melville is on the board

  372. Maineiac says:

    Javier Rodriguez, what a suprise!

  373. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Javier Rodriguez out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. Ok

  374. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I guess Melville is asking for Porcello like numbers at this point. Pretty much every big parket team has passed up on him at least twice.

  375. Maineiac says:

Unless someone signs Melville, this draft is getting boring. Ike Davis, Reese Havens, Brad Holt, and Javier Rodriguez is what we have. It’s not great, but its not horrible. These are all young guys so we’ll have to wait to see if they have talent.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I agree. I’m waiting for somone to sign Melville and then I’m out.
