postGame: Padres 8 Mets 6

by Matthew Cerrone on June 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

The Mets (30–32) lost to the Padres (28–37) by the score of 8 to 6 in San Diego today, ending a four-game sweep.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • Pedro Martinez gave up a ton of hits, but was able to keep the lid on.  However, Billy Wagner came on in the eighth for a four-out save, which was the right move, but he let up a three-run, pinch hit home run by Tony Clark to give the Padres the lead for good.
  • It’s a shame, because it seemed like the Mets day, up until that Clark home run.
  • Also, I hate to go here, but, Wagner was totally squeezed on a third strike in the eighth – I’m just saying.
  • The Mets did come through with a series of two-out hits, including a drag bunt by Endy Chavez to score Carlos Delgado late in the game.
  • Also, the Mets played outstanding defense in the outfield, including catches on the warning track to end back to back innings with the runners on base.
  • Since they had not been doing well with situational hitting, and getting big hits, Willie Randolph, who was clearly irritated with his team after the game last night, pushed the envelope today and had his team running hard with stolen bases, hit and runs, bunts, etc.
  • In the first three games, the pitching was great, but the hitting was awful.  Today, the hitting was alive, but the pitching vanished.  What’s the words I’m looking for?  Oh, right, inconsistent.
  • Tomorrow, the drum beat will begin around Willie Randolph, I bet, and, frankly, it shouldn’t.  He put his players in the best position to win on several occasions in this four-game series, such as using Wagner today in the eighth, but his players did not execute.  I’m not sure what else he is supposed to.
  • I don’t think he’ll be fired, but I’m fairly certain he has one feet on a banana peel.

In other words, like SNY’s Gary Cohen said:

“What the heck is going on here?”

The Mets are off tomorrow, and will then begin a three-game series at Shea Stadium against the first-place D’Backs, who will pitch Brandon Webb, Micah Owings and Dan Haren.

Note: Castro Overslept

by Regis Courtemanche on June 8th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Ramon Castro was slated to start today’s game but was benched and fined for being late to Petco Park.

According to SNY’s Gary Cohen, Castro showed up only an hour before game time due to “over-sleeping” and Raul Casanova will get the start instead.

by Mike Nichols on June 8th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

The Game:

The Mets (30-31) look to avoid being swept in the finale of their four-games series versus the Padres (27-37) today at Petco Park in San Diego, starting at 4:05 pm EST.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

RHP Pedro Martinez (1-0, 6.75 ERA) starts for the Mets. In his first start since coming off the disabled list on June 3 versus the Giants, Martinez allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks whiles striking out three through 6.0 IP. He is 10-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 23 career games, 16 starts, versus the Padres.

LHP Wil Ledezma (0-2, 4.43 ERA) takes the hill for the Padres. Ledezma earned a no-decision in his last start on June 3 versus the Cubs, surrendering three runs on three hits whiles striking out three and walking five over 4.2 IP. This is first career start versus the Mets.

postGame: Padres 2 Mets 1

by Mike Nichols on June 8th, 2008 at 1:40 am

The Mets (30–31) lost to the Padres (27–37) by the score of 2 to 1 in ten innings tonight in San Diego.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

Third verse same as the first, as the Mets lose by the same 2 to 1 score for the third consecutive game. The Mets were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position tonight, leaving 11 men on base. They are now 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position in this series.

However, in case you missed it:

  • The Mets scored their only run of the game on a Endy Chavez sac-fly with the bases loaded in the first inning.
  • With two outs in the third inning Sandy Alomar inexplicably held up David Wright at third base on a Carlos Delgado double to right field. With the Mets not scoring much in this series, that’s a spot were Alomar must be aggressive and send the runner to force the defense to make a perfect throw.
  • Speaking of Delgado, he was 3-for-4 with the aforementioned double and two singles. He also made a stellar defensive play in the sixth saving the Mets a run by throwing a runner out at home with the bases loaded.
  • Oliver Perez bounced back with a solid outing, allowing only a solo homerun in the fifth inning by Michael Barrett homerun in his 5.1 IP.
  • Scott Hariston ended the game with a walk-off homerun in the tenth off Pedro Feliciano.
  • Other than Feliciano, the Mets bullpen continues to pitch beautifully as the Joe Smith, Scott Schoeneweis, and Duaner Sanchez combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
  • Normally I love a good 2 to 1 ball game, but these games in San Diego are brutal to watch. I don’t know what’s worse the time of these games or the poor offensive execution by both teams.
  • The Mets are now one game under .500 and are 6.5 games behind the first-place Phillies.

The Mets finish of their four-game set against the Padres tomorrow at 4 pm, with Pedro Martinez, who is making his third start of the season, taking on Wilfredo Ledezma.
