Ramon Castro was scheduled to start yesterday, in place of Brian Schneider with a day game after a night game.
However, Castro did not arrive to the stadium until 45 minutes
before the game started – and so Raul Casanova got the start instead.
Castro told reporters that he goofed up the times on his team-issued pocket schedule, forgetting to adjust for the time zone change.
…unreal…this is up there with Pascual Perez doing loops on the highway outside Atlanta…either castro is lying or he’s losing his mind…you choose…
…by the way, from what i understand, Petco Park is located less than one mile from the team’s hotel…
Willie Randolph told reporters that Castro’s excuse was ‘unacceptable,’ adding, “and he’ll be fined for it.”
…i don’t want to get too high-horsed about this, because who the hell really knows what’s what in this situation, but it seems to me that a united team, which is focused on winning, will not allow this to happen…i mean, even the 1986 Mets got to the ball park on time, even after spending a night in prison…
…come on, guys, get it together…

Or that what everyone has been saying for a long time is quite true….Willie has lost this team.
See… they knew what they were doing carrying 3 catchers! Bite your tounges everyone!
And pinch hitting Cancel over Castro on Friday…
This is what we’re rooting for and getting so upset over? Ughhhhh.
haha the ‘86 Mets were on a mission…this team….not so much
Shrek..nice. I always called castro the Boriqua Shrek, I feel validated..lol
And yes, after a night in a Pittsburgh prison, the Mets did make it to the game the next day..lol.
Tuefel/Ojeda and who else was involved? I believe their were 3 misfits.
that was houston, no? the little fight/skirmish they got into? Damn, I loved that team…
…maybe someone should play the “1986:A Year to Remember” video over and over and over in this clubhouse…
It just goes to show — you can’t have just a bunch of nice mild-mannered guys. The fire inside that gets them in trouble is the same fire that motivates them to excel on the field.
Having said that, I don’t mean that you need a bunch of guys drinking and driving and raping women or shooting people in strip clubs. But what the Mets have is a bunch of millionaires that don’t seem to give much of a damn one way or the other whether they win or lose. They still get paid and the money spends just as good either way. Plus, there is no pressure on them. I used to hate Steinbrenner for the way he ridiculed and challenged his players and he DID take it to the extreme. But apparently there is something to it because when there is NO accountability (NO ONE in the Mets organization has been held accountable for the past year), this is what you end up with.
I’m sorry, but when the mets need their backup catcher to get hits, that means the team is in trouble. And what a lame ass excuse Castro gave.
The excuse is so lame, that I think it may be true.
Don’t these guys generally have roommates?
No Gary and Keith were talking about that the other day on the brodcast. Used to be for the first two years you roomed with someone. But now everyone has there own room if not suite depending on contract stipulations.
Is he joking? It was 1pm in California and 4pm here. He went out and got drunk and overslept.
Although didn’t Gooden miss the ticker tape parade b/c he was hungover? But hey, at least he a good reason to celebrate.
Keith has been saying for a while that the team needs an inspiring bonding moment. He applauded the idea of getting into a bench clearing brawl (he said the same during game 161 last year). While I doubt this team would get into a fight for the sake of getting into a fight, it seems pretty clear that this team doesn’t really play for each other.
Mets Fan on Wall St. — Your answer is actually in the first sentence of your post: “…ticker tape parade.” THEY GOT THERE! THEY HAD ONE! THEY ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING! THEY WON!
Who gives a rats arse whether he missed the parade? They were champions. This team is in no danger of having a parade to miss. If they aren’t going to make drastic changes (Omar AND Willie as well as several players) soon, then they should be sellers. Beltran? Bye bye. Castillo? Bye bye. Ditto for Heilman, Chavez, Delgado, Ollie, Castro, etc.
Wouldn’t someone have called him? I know it’s not their responsibility, but you’d think someone would wonder or worry where he is?
I don’t think any of them realize they are part of a major league baseball team … let alone where their teammate is.
Has no one mentioned yet that he seemingly remembered the time zone issue for the first 3 games of the series??? This excuse is completely ludicrous.
Time zone change? They’d been in the PTZ for a week! Either he’s lying, or he’s dumber than a bag of rocks. Wow.
Things like this make you think the team is coming apart at the seams. I hope I’m wrong.
The rest of the line up is apparently confused by Runners In Scoring Position.
Got em
The ‘86 Mets showed up because they liked each other and the game of baseball. The ‘08 version shows little evidence of either.
dont teams have like team breakfast or team lunchs something so everyone gets up and gets the game plan before having to be at the ballpark.
Nope. Football does that. Baseball teams run 2 scheduled busses from the hotel to the ballpark that are not required and are generally used by team personnel, press, and family. Rookies and coaches generally fall in also.
The core of the team generally cabs it to the ballpark at the last possible moment before reporting time.
this is so unacceptable – cut him!
also by his “logic” wouldnt he have arrived at the park 3 hours early? hey ramon, the clocks are set later in CA buddy!
Fat, lazy catchers are hard to come by. You have to remain stocked. This team is a disgrace.
This particular screw-up is easier than it sounds. I’m on the west coast, and do most of my work with companies in New York. Even if you’ve done the 3-hour transposition correctly for 4 days in a row, it’s entirely possible to wake up (possibly hungover), have a brain fart and calculate 3 hours in the wrong direction. Entirely possible.
I’m inclined to agree, this is an easy thing to screw up, especially if you travel a lot, which baseball players do. But this really doesn’t bode well for what’s really going on in that clubhouse.
He does have a checkered past.
I was out in San Diego for the first 3 games of the series, and the Mets hotel was definitely only a mile or so from the Stadium. I stayed at a hotel a few blocks away and walked to the stadium in about 15 minutes.
I ran into a lot of Met fans out there for the series – which was great – and a few of them had run into Mets (including Reys and Castillo) out at the clubs well after midnight. I understand that these guys want to party when they’re out on the town, but when you’re struggling like they have been it’s important to get rested up. If you’re 10 games up in first place then you can go out all you want. but being 7.5 back, that crap shouldn’t happen.
That is COMPLETELY unacceptable. Not that I am shocked but that is something there should be rules against. I dont care if you are winning or losing. Teams should have curfews on the road and should be permitted to do whatever they want ONLY on nights before off days. Obviously you cant control what guys do at home, but when the team is on the road in one hotel, fines should be handed out for behavior like that.
Two posts on Castro being late? Either Matt has a man crush on Ramon, loves Darth Vader, or he hates the Castro’s guts… which one is it? lol
In defense of Matt, first post was by Regis Courtemanche, not him.
Mets should cut Castro to send a message, but I’m sure they feel Ramon is an important spoke in this well-oiled tricycle of a team.
I’m sure it won’t happen.
This is also the team’s fault. I mean, say all the players are supposed to be at the field by 10:00am. Shouldn’t someone have called the hotel or his cell phone once they saw that he wasn’t there by 10:30? That’s what happens in every other business when someone is late.
They did call the hotel which is why the Hotel Security opened his room to find him in the shower
I actually think Castro is in willies doghouse for actually getting a few clutch hits against the dogers. Willie must of hated that
the only way this excuse even approaches something close to valid is if ramon was also late for every other game on the roadtrip, which i’m sure he wasnt….i mean the timezone difference was the same in the previous six west coast games, wasnt it? and i’m sure he had no problem being on time for those.
