Quote: Pedro still Believes

by Matthew Cerrone on June 9th, 2008 at 7:46 am

In yesterday’s loss to the Padres, Pedro Martinez allowed four runs on 10 hits, while walking none and striking out four, through five innings pitched.

Martinez has allowed seven runs in 11 innings since returning from the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Martinez, talking to reporters after the game, when asked about being down six losses to the Phillies, and when is it too much:

“Anything is too much.  We don’t wanna be behind anybody.  I’m very positive that we’re gonna turn it around…We still have plenty of time, we just need to consistently play better.  We need to start playing better and doing better and start winning more ball games, especially on the road…I don’t think we’re going to continue to play this way and continue to fall all of the time…With the guys we have, Johan and the pitching staff that we have, we have a great amount of talent in Reyes and Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Moises is coming back soon, so I’m expecting this team to actually turn it around.”

Quote: Willie is Speechless, Sort Of

by Matthew Cerrone on June 9th, 2008 at 7:35 am

Willie Randolph, following yesterday’s loss, and four-game sweep, to the Padres, while talking to reporters after the game:

“I don’t know what to say, gentlemen. I’m not usually at a loss for words, but what do you say…It’s frustrating. It’s embarrassing…It’s not the kind of a team we are. We’ve got to find a way to get it right and get it done…I don’t know that there’s anything else to say…

“Obviously, we’re not feeling too good about ourselves right now. But, this team never gives up. I think they’ve got to know that no one will feel sorry for us, and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. So, morale will be fine, we’ll be fine as a team. Again, these guys have been around long enough to know that this is part of the game, it’s a tough part of the game, but we have to fight through it. We’ll be fine. I’m still confident in this team. We’re taking our lumps right now, but morale is not the issue, we just have to go out and get it done.”

Quote: Wagner States the Obvious

by Matthew Cerrone on June 9th, 2008 at 7:24 am

The Mets entered the eighth inning of yesterday’s game with a two-run lead.

However, Duaner Sanchez let two men reach base – after which Billy Wagner came on for a four-out save, but allowed a single to Chris Stansberry and a home run to Tony Clark, which gave the Padres the lead.

Wagner, talking to reporters last night, when asked how the team will respond knowing it is six losses behind the Phillies:

“We need to start winning baseball games.”

seriously, all he had was cliches…and understandably so…wagner had a look of total defeat and devastation in his eyes as he looked in to the sea of microphones staring him down in front of his locker…he didn’t look mad, he looked beatwhich is exactly how i am starting to feel as well
