According to the food blog Endless Simmer, Mama’s Italian Special Sandwich, which you can get at Shea Stadium, checks in among the Top Five Best Ballpark Food.

any one who knows of my love for sandwiches, or, ‘sangwiches,’ as my nana insists on saying, will not be surprised to know that i have had one of these…as far as sandwiches go, it’s good…as far as food at Shea Stadium goes, it’s great…

I was surprised that the Times article didn’t mention the Shea Stadium knishes, which I always find to be quite enjoyable.

  2. fsa3 says:

Where are these sandwiches? I never see them by the upper deck :)

  3. bigchart333 says:

Mama’s better carry over into CitiField…there’s really no reason to eat anything else at shea besides mamas

i like the turkey, fresh mozzy, and peppers better though

  4. cb32 says:

    where is it?

    • bigchart333 says:

field level, towards left field, near the SMALLER mets store

see, me and my boys always say, NO ONE knows about this…

they also have bowls of mozzerella balls, salads, and canolis

prices arent bad either, u get a giant hero for 9 bucks

      • fsa3 says:

Just to confirm, you can get their even without field level tix right?

        • bkdrew says:

No, you can’t – at least during game time anyway. I haven’t tried before the first pitch.

        • bigchart333 says:

no u DEFINITELY can, i have many times, since my 7 pack tickets are upper deck…there’s a ramp u can take down, like i said, it’s between 3rd and left field

        • OriginalMetsFan says:

There is a cart on the Mezzanine level that sells Mama’s sandwiches. It is located around section 8 on the first base side. They come in a white box with a red design; so if you take a quick look you might think they are boxes of popcorn.

        • OriginalMetsFan says:

          Sorry I meant section 9

  5. Cactus says:

Boog’s is the best. I challenge anyone to match my triple play feat – turkey, pork, and beef sandwich plates all in the same game.

    • hot stove chef says:

I didn’t realize that gluttony was something to aspire to. I hope you have good medical insurance

    • bkdrew says:

I agree. I’m surprised Bull’s BBQ in CBP didn’t make the cut, too.

    • Danny says:

I agree with this. And Boog himself is there to shake your hand, which is fun.

  6. bigchart333 says:

oh, and u dont hAVE to be sitting in the field level to eat there, u can get there from the ramp anywhere in the stadium

    • Ceetar says:

Good luck finding it that way though. And not missing half the game walkign down the ramps.

      • bigchart333 says:

yeah, it’s hard to explain…u just gotta know where it is. I cant describe how to find it from upper deck or wahtever…

but i’ll be at the game tonite, and im sittin field, so i’ll be sure to take a bite for all the posters here

        • Ceetar says:

I don’t really like sandwiches so I’ve never eaten there. I guess the best wyt o figure it out would be to go there via the field level and exit out. Of course it’s only useful knowledge for about 3 months anymore.

        • ToastyJoe says:

          “I don’t really like sandwiches…”

Weird. I’ve never heard anyone say that.

        • Ceetar says:

Guess i’m one of a kind.

Always makes finding myself lunch harder.

  7. bigben10471 says:

Hmm, I’m going to the game today and would definitely give Mama’s a shot, if anyone’s willing to explain how to get there from the upper deck…..

  8. BaysideBillyD says:

    As a devotee of Mama’s here goes….
Field Level near Gate D. Follow signs for The Hot Corner.
You can get into Mama’s without a ticket for the Field Level.
If you are entering the stadium via Gate D, go up the short escalator directly ahead of you. Immediately after going up the escalator, veer to your right and follow the arrows.

Have the Hot Turkey (great recommendation on a day like today) with Fresh Mozzerella and Gravy sandwich.
By far, the best meal at Shea.

  9. saltzy007 says:

Can I just say that I basically live at Shea, and I had no idea this place existed…

Im guessing its cause A. My seats are in the UD, and B. I try to stay on the RF side so I can beat the train traffic….

    I’m gonna give it a whirl tonight….

  10. Kevin Elster says:

Matt, this is the kind of stuff that makes you stand out.

    • bkdrew says:

Totally agreed…. I never quite know how to appropriately convey this on the Metsblog surveys. ;)

  11. BaysideBillyD says:

By the way, the sandwiches up on Mezzanine are cold and nasty compared to the deliciously fresh delicacies that are sold on the field level.
You’re spending over $9 on a sandwich, it might as well be the real deal. Take the walk, it is well worth it.

  12. Joe Bacci says:

Mama’s Italian special is the balls.

  13. Slob says:

Why is it that whenever they’re on the road, and they show the opponents’ food it always looks so much better than anything at Shea? i.e. PNC Park’s cole slaw-laden hot bologna monstrosity.

  14. wa2k99 says:

Boog’s is amazing and I give it an 11 out of 10! To the guy who got all three sandwiches, well, you can die happy now!

I’m flying in to NY in July and I can’t wait to go to Mama’s.

  15. dykstraw II says:

i never realized you can get there without field level tix. this is honestly the only edible food at shea other than peanuts and faux dippin dots.

  16. BaysideBillyD says:

I went to the game last night and noticed I made a mistake… it is Gate B that you must enter to get to Mama’s on the way in.
    Sorry for the mix up
