postGame: D’Backs 9 Mets 5
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 10, 2008 11:41 pm

The Mets (30–33) lost to the D’Backs (35–30) by the score of 9 to 5 in Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • John Maine looked good, for a while, though he let Arizona chop away at a four-run lead.  He was removed after the fifth, after which Claudio Vargas let the game become tied at five.
  • Then, what looked like a tornado struck Shea Stadium – literally.  The team returned, and a tornado hit Shea Stadium – figuratively – as the D’Backs treated Joe Smith and Duaner Sanchez like they were throwing batting practice.
  • Earlier today, Elias released some stats that showed how the Mets play best when Moises Alou is in the lineup.  Tonight, on the first pitch thrown to him since returning from the disabled list, he ripped a two-out, two-RBI single.  He left the game after the rain delay, and all hell broke loose.  Bizarre.
  • In what is great symbolism, in the ninth, with a slight moment of hope in the air, David Wright hit a ball that died just short of the warning track, after which Carlos Beltran ripped a ground ball, hard, to the first baseman to end the game.
  • With the Mets down four runs, several members of the small 3,000–person crowd were chanting, “Bobby V., Bobby V.,” which is funny and sad at the same time.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the D’Backs tomorrow at 7 pm when Mike Pelfrey faces Brandon Webb.

It’s one thing losing, but losing without pulling out your Abe Nunez weapon is unforgivable.

  2. ToastyJoe says:

Not to worry. Before the game, Willie told Eddie Coleman that the Mets are due to get on a “nice little roll.”

    • dwright012 says:

I was at the game for all of it tonight.. this team could not be more done…

To quote Randy Quaid in major league two “bring out the pooper scopper”

There is no hope for this team as its assembled right now.. they didn’t score a run from the 2nd inning on!

They pull Maine cause his pitch count says so in favor of Claudio Vargas!

There is no limit to how many ways this team can find a way to loose.

    • mavicario says:

Willie Randolph is an idiot and comments like this annoy the hell out of me.

You would think he would’ve learned with his “the champagne is just gonna taste sweeter” comments last year.

He’s learned how to manage from Joe Torre, but Torre never had to go through anything like this. No matter how bad the Yankees looked mid year you can always say atleast they won the division the previous year and his quiet demeanor was somewhat forgivable.

He needs to go. He’s never been a leader and he’s not the winner he thought he was.

  3. KinersKornerman says:

OK, in the interests of saving time, here’s the top 10 comments after a loss:
    1. This team has no heart/fire/passion/guts.
    2. Getting rid of Gotay/Bannister/Bell/ Lindstrom/ Milledge was a terrible mistake
    3. This team is no better than .500
    4. Castillo/Delgado/Heilman/Easley/Tatis/ Endy sucks
    5. Alou/Pedro/ElDuque are on the DL all the time
    6. Perez/Pelfrey is a head case
    7. Santana isn’t as good as we thought.
    8. Bring up Valentin/Carp/Murphy/Armas/Pascucci
    9. Get Nady/Dunn/Lofton/Bonds
    And of course,
    10. FIRE WILLIE

    Did I miss anything?

    • Church says:

      omar

    • Steve in DC says:

      You forgot:
      11. Omar only gets declining Latin players.

    • NegativeFan says:

      Yeah: “Fire Omar!”

    • ravin108 says:

Here’s my argument for keeping Omar. He brought the Mets back to respectability very quickly in 2005 and 2006. To do so, he had to sign some free agents. which killed our early draft picks for two years. This year, when those high draft picks would have been approaching the majors (and we made a good trade for Johan that hurt the system more), we don’t have them and are experiencing a severe weakness in that department. Hence is a fair cause of the lack of depth this season.
However, we all know there is a boatload of talent on this roster signed to long term contracts. They are clearly underperforming or we wouldn’t all care so much. While I like Willie, he has not changed his approach despite seeing that his approach stopped working a year ago. It might be time for the Mets to let Willie walk, replace him with the AAA guy, and at the same time, replace a lot of the veterans with youth. We can make a bunch of small trades getting rid of Alou, Heilman (who has a lot of value), and our veteran bench guys to be replaced by some folks in the minors. I know Anderson Hernandez is a garbage hitter, but he can most effectively replace the defense of SS or 2B if need be. With the young guys, the Mets can see who can help them to make a run next season.
With this process taking place, I think the Mets retain respectability and effectively change the culture of this old team.

      • Gina says:

I don’t think him bringing them back very quickly is an excuse. If anything I think that was his biggest mistake. He tried to build a house with no foundation. Now whether that was a poor decision and poor long-term thinking on his fault or he was forced to do it because of pressure from the Wilpons I don’t know but don’t think it should be an excuse for the state of the team now.

    • sidd finch says:

      don’t hate on endy

    • shortstop says:

The “Fire Willie” comment should have been #1.

  4. NegativeFan says:

    Matt-

Please use your influence to have SNY skip airing the Mets and air Beer Money instead please?

    • UpperDeckDweller says:

hahahaha that Beer Money show is downright horrible, but i think i agree that i would rather watch that than this team. You cant get your hopes up for one minute watching these guys…they will just dash all your hopes and dreams before the 9th inning

      • Deadpanwalking says:

You’re right about Beer Money, it’s terrible. I’m seeing no heart and definitely no skill. Here how to fix it:

        1. Fire both the hosts. Chris isn’t TV-ready and Julie is downright nasty to the guests. I’m not sure what’s going on behind the scenes with her but she’s so dark and depressing it’s like watching Louis Anderson host Family Feud.

        2. Make K-Berk the host, the guy knows how to hold a mic, he’s an expert at Mets history and he’s quick on his feet. He also has that “aww, shucks” appeal backed by a big brain. It’s kind of slumming for Kev, but he needs to buck it up and do it for the network.

        3. Actually screen the contestants. Not before they play, but in the editing booth. Have more contestants participate but only put the ones on the show if they have some pop (See Cash Cab, they do it right.)

        4. For the love of Mr. Met, put some production credits behind this thing. Give the audience a Pavlovian intro song and more in-game stats, info, and anecdotes. Maybe cut-away to archive tape that compliments the trivia in question.

        5. $10 for a question is “Beer Money?” Not a Shea. That buys one beer with tip. They have to up the ante, put their money where their mouths are, go for broke. Make a goal to be $100 or $200 per contestant, topping out at around $500. The biggest hit of the ’90s wasn’t “Who wants to be a Hundredaire.”

Anyway, that’s my take on fixing Beer Money.

  5. ccmetfan says:

we started losing when the guisseppe franco commercials stopped airing

    • drewblood says:

I live in los angeles…i think i’m going to pay mr. franco a visit. and punch him in his balding head. this team is painful to watch.

  6. MetsFan4Decades says:

Yes. I think you’ve lost your mind, dude. There is no way I want Bonds on this team. I don’t care if it guarantees a world series ring. Never mind the drugs - the lying and thinking he’s untouchable b/c, well ‘I’m THE Barry Bonds’, makes me hope and wish he disappears, never to be heard from again….

  7. kd bart says:

Team plays like they expect to and wait to lose. Complacency andacceptance of it have definitely set in. as there seemed to be no anger onn the bench at the end. The culture of the club must be changed and that starts by firing Willie and his entire staff.

    It is time.

  8. Skyhigh980 says:

The Wilpons need to stop expecting that THIS is the roster they can win games with. The organization needs to look into bringing up young talent and making as many moves as they can (minus trading Wright, Reyes, Maine, Santana) This season is all but lost and I think give the squad two more series’ and if the losing continues, start making the changed neccessary to right the ship.

  9. metsfan119 says:

I blame the fans negative attitude

  10. metsjam says:

I’m very curious how many comments will be registered tonight. I’m predicting the disgust factor is pretty high and apathy > anger right now.

  11. drodro22 says:

agreed…..it is NOW TIME TO FIRE WILLIE AND EVERYONE ELSE….

  12. Two-By-Four says:

Like Willie I see a major positive. The club is no longer playing inconsistent baseball. :)

  13. Skyhigh980 says:

Is anyone watching the post game interviews, and if so has Randolph spoken yet? PLEASE PULL AN OZZIE GUILLEN

    • ToastyJoe says:

Why do you need to watch his postgame interview? Here it is:

“There’s a lot of season left…we just need to get on a nice little roll, get a nice little rhythm going. I’m not gonna overreact to one game. Just gotta go out and get ‘em tomorrow.”

    • Boooooo says:

he talked and said.. We battled, what can you do, hit the ball rigth at people, maine had to go longer, alous calf was tight..

      thats about it..

a bunch of bitch ass questions and nothing else, no fire, no passion, no cursing, no nothing!!!!

I want to see a lou pinella, cursing and screaming, blaming mgmt for not sending him anyone who can hit..

      that would be AWESOME!!!!

  14. Mr. Mets Butler says:

Fire Willie. He should have pinch hit Nunez instead of Marlon.

  15. Skyhigh980 says:

    BRING BACK THE STACHE

  16. ditas says:

Well, in games like these I usually find myself throwing things across the living room, but not tonight I have reached the point of no return. Should we even care anymore? I want this team to totally drop out of the race so ownership will finally wake up and start making some moves. And I don’t want them to stay close because then I feel that Minaya will try to make some desperate moves to save his job and he might deplete our already depleted farm system even more.

It’s time to start selling and hopefully replenish our horrible farm system. That’s if any other team wants to take any of our scrubs of our hands.

  17. Mookie 1986 says:

    SNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE

  18. ccmetfan says:

I actually don’t care anymore. If they win, fine. If they lose, oh well. There’s other things to worry about. The Mets won’t make the playoffs so we shouldn’t heighten our expectations anymore. everybody should just enjoy the games and pretend it’s 2005 again. Luckily I got other teams to root for in other sports such as in soccer where my team is in the South American final.

    • therealsince86 says:

What is this mysterious sport you call soccer? i have never heard of it.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

I’d rather watch the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS over and over than watch soccer.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think i remember something about it. Isn’t it that communist sport they play on football fields when a real sport is not using it?

      • KinersKornerman says:

it’s that great women’s sport where the girls remove their tops after they score a goal. Quite enjoyable.

    • Mr. Mets Butler says:

yeah…but does your soccer team have Abraham Nunez on it?

    • NegativeFan says:

      HEHEHEHE…..you a Ronaldo fan? ;)

      • ccmetfan says:

used to be but after hearing his latest scandal he’s just sad

        • NegativeFan says:

I gotta give it up for soccer players though….they’re the world’s best athletes.

        • therealsince86 says:

Not true, they don’t run as much as people think. They have a portion of the field that they are most accountable for. Try basketball as the world’s best athletes.

        • Deadpanwalking says:

I’ve heard that Water Polo players are in the best shape of any athletes. They’re also playing with like 9 uniforms on (at least early in the match.) I’d also throw gymnasts, boxers, decathletes, and John Daly in there.

  19. teufelshuffle86 says:

Willie just had the balls to say “I still saw some positive things tonight”. Was he watching the same game I watched?

  20. Boooooo says:

anyone ever se that CURE auto insurcance commercial?

that is awesome.. that little blue dude has more heart than our manager..

    its like:

” Some auto companies dont reward people for good driving, i say FCK them..

    THATS FCKING HILLARIOUS!!!!!

    • therealsince86 says:

Booooooo are you trying to get banned? Every post you have made tonight has the Fword in it? Look in real life i say those words quite often when upset but on here isn’t it kinda repetitive and against posting rules?

      • Boooooo says:

i misspelled it though… doesnt that count?

        • therealsince86 says:

No it does not Booo. I actually think below all the garbage in your post usually there may be something there somewhere. However, tonight that is not the case. You have constantly played games all night with the censors and made Metsblog a worse place for being here. Thank you and good night.

  21. drewblood says:

    BRING BACK DARYL BOSTON!!

  22. yougottabelieve84 says:

You know its becoming quite difficult to have any confidence in this team at all. Why would anyone believe this team can overcome a 7.5 game deficit in a season, when they lie down and die after going down a run in any given game. You watch them and theres always an uneasy feeling. They score 3 or 4 in the first couple innings then let the other team nibble away at the lead, while going down 1-2-3 for the next 6 innings. When they give up multiple run leads on a daily basis, and have no fight when they are down, how can we expect anything to change going forward?

    • m00kie says:

“becoming” ?? have you been paying attention? If you have any confidence left at all you’re doing better than me.

  23. Boooooo says:

im so sick of seeig david wright interviewed.. he whispers like a bitch so none of the ‘others’ hear him..

    GROW A SET DAVID!!!!!

  24. Mookie 1986 says:

Who else can’t wait to miss Webb shut down the Mets for their 6th straight loss?

    Hands? Anyone?

I’m not even going to waste the energy it takes to press 6-0 on my remote tomorrow. Just not worth the aggravation.

  25. JSC1968 says:

I can’t say I disagree w/ the sentiment of cutting bait. But, what is out there to be had.

We need to objectively look at what is different about this team from the ‘06 team.

    1) Reyes & LoDuca at the top vs Reyes at the top Snider at bottom. LoDuca was a great contact guy. The Mets could use a Russell Martin type guy, but so could the rest of the league.

    2) Endy vs Endy, the spark plug and great defense vs. he dude who left 6 guys on base tonight and is batting .210

    3) Delgado the superstar vs Delgado the aging player, he has picked it up of late, but Delgado in his prime or near the end of it in ‘06, could carry almost any team. It’s hard to ask anybody to be that good, but he was.

    4) Unstoppable bullpen vs inconsistent bullpen, Duaner was better than any setup man we ever had in ‘06. That type of performance is just so hard to duplicate, Heilman did blow as many games either (that’s big too).

I’m sure you guys can come up with way more. I’m tired so are the Mets. I would love for us to get out of this, but it’s starting to look alot like September.

How sad. It seems when we pitch our butts off, we can’t hit and when we hit, we can’t get guys out. It’s so frustrating, that’s why Met fandom is not for the faint-hearted.

    • therealsince86 says:

Castillo actually makes more contact than Loduca and has a higher OBP. That is not where the problem is. It’s everything. When you get in these kinda funks everything goes wrong and we have been in one for too long. At this point the players expect to lose and that is the difference in these kinda games. You have to give them a reason to think something is different.

  26. Boooooo says:

    so tomorrow, mets lose 3-1?

Webb goes 9 pelfrey goes 7?

wright homers, no one else does anything?

  27. teufelshuffle86 says:

At least we won’t be trying to end a 5-game skid against the best pitcher in the NL……oh wait.

  28. kd bart says:

Look how much things have changed in two years. In 2006, there wasn’t a game you felt they were out of. You always felt they could come back and win as they played with confidence. Now, you get the sense that they wait for that “uh-oh” moment in each game when they expect the other shoe to drop and the loss to come no matter what the score is. Expectance and acceptance of losing has set in and that is the worse thing that can happen. The culture must be changed and that must start at the top. Willie and the staff must go. Changing the 24th and 25th man won’t do it. A signal must be sent that this is totally unacceptable.

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think anyone on the team is accepting losing. However, I think that all of them are expecting to. Thus they are pressing and playing just plain ugly baseball.
You have to change the perception of the team. Get rid of Willie so the players understand that it’s on them now. If they continue losing it’s their fault. Right now Willie is THEIR scapegoat.

      • casey s. says:

i think as punishment, the mets should be forced to play in pink uniforms…bunch of pathetic nillies.

  29. dr jones says:

I can’t believe I feel this way but I actually hate the 08 Mets. Most of all Willie and a very close second in Omar. I can’t remember being this angry at a Mets team in my life. this is a all time low.. Thanks Wilpons.. Great Job… Top to bottom this organization might be the most poorly run in baseball. Way to act like a top 5 Mlb franchise.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

It’s all part of the master plan to recreate the Brooklyn Dodgers. Winning 1 world championship in 60 years is the goal while we play in the best ballpark in baseball, New Ebbets Field sponsored by Citi.

  30. drewblood says:

    BRING BACK MIKE BORDICK!

  31. NadyFan says:

I think this is all part of George Steinbrenner’s evil master plan to have Willie manage the Mets into Oblivion!

  32. Boooooo says:

if i were randope i would borrow castros alarm clock..

i love how willie goes out of his way to NOT do somethign ballsy..

how he comes out and says nothign ELSE will be done to castro…

how about fining him, benching him, cutting him, benching beltran, moving him OUT OF THE 4 HOLE????

HE HAS 6 HOMERS!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? REYES HAS MORE!!!

MOVE HIM to 3 and move wright o 4. DO SOMETHING!!!!!

    • Mr. Mets Butler says:

      Castro was fined.

      • Boooooo says:

        i know, but thats it..

he doesnt play anyway, so it doesnt matter.
im grasping at straws here… there is nothing left..

        • EliPorter says:

beltran is in the 4 hole with the approach of a leadoff man. hes very timid at the plate and is trying to get on base rather than drive the ball. it doesnt help that everytime he hits a rocket, its directly at someone. but for f’s sake, i want to see things shaken up. could wright get moved to the 4 spot and beltran to the 3? randolph needs to manage with urgency

  33. Sasseroni says:

The Mess lost? no way. The shockwaves are rippling through me right now……nooooooooooo waaaaaaaaaay.

I’d say it’s about time that people stop showing up at Shea, maybe then the Wilpons would get the idea. But that won’t happen, too many fans either living in lala land or just don’t really care about the results.

Gotta win 60-65 of 99 games………..not gonna happen my friends. Not gone happen.

  34. NadyFan says:

The future is already here. This team is done.

  35. ccmetfan says:

it would be interesting if the fans didn’t attend a single game or walked out like in that Orioles game. I know it won’t happen and it shouldn’t but it wonder how ownership would react

  36. NadyFan says:

I for one will not attend. These clowns are not going to get one penny of my hard earned money. More Fun spending it on a lap dance.

  37. Boooooo says:

guys i have to stop posting..

the boss therealsince86 has said my posts are too obscene for him tonight.

im so sorry i upset you thereal.. i forgot you are the king of metsblog.. doesnt everyone know that?

how you always post your BS comments demeaning someones post, or saying how wrong it is, or why your opinions is right.

you are the one who makes this site worse.. everyone on here would agree, except for your little group of butties. and that is not a misspelling, i meant butties

    • therealsince86 says:

Thanks Booo. i try to be as rational as I can on here but why let that get in the way. I have never tried to be a boss or king of Metsblog but I do remember a different time on here where posters were respectful to each other and we blogged about baseball. Like so many of my “butties” your type has ran them all off. Guys like me and darkstar are about all that is left from the first few months of Metsblog. I will miss it but you Win. At least you will win at something in life. Maybe now you won’t be such a loser.
You have what you want. I will not post on Metsblog until after the allstar break.

      • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

You have what you want. I will not post on Metsblog until after the allstar break. …………….. YES!!!!!!

    • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

      I agree with you 100%.

“the boss therealsince86 has said my posts are too obscene for him tonight.”

“Booooooo are you trying to get banned? Every post you have made tonight has the Fword in it? Look in real life i say those words quite often when upset but on here isn’t it kinda repetitive and against posting rules?-The real”

I dont know if you remember boo but there was a time not to long ago that the cursing became too out of control that matt had to screen the posts before they appeared on the blog. From what i see here the real was just trying to look out for you so you dont get banned or get all of us in hot water with matt again.

“im so sorry i upset you thereal.. i forgot you are the king of metsblog.. doesnt everyone know that?”

“the king of metsblog”… I believe that title belongs to matt cerrone.

“how you always post your BS comments demeaning someones post, or saying how wrong it is, or why your opinions is right. ”

Is it his fault that you cannot defend your opinions?? If this site was just to post there would not be a reply button at the end of your post. I believe matt made this option to engage in INTELLIGENT discussions. If you are offended by his rational or his points, how about doing more research or put more thought before you post something. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion at the end of the day. Why be mad at him because his point is better than your own?

“you are the one who makes this site worse.. everyone on here would agree, except for your little group of butties. and that is not a misspelling, i meant butties”

“butties” what are you twelve, grow up. If you want a site to post your mindless banter than perhaps its best you go to another blog. This is my first year on this site and i enjoy a good debate on this site from time to time. Contrary to what you believe people like real and AMS/Darkstar/Stick/Dave/Zen/Nate and others bring out the best in people by forcing them to actually think and prove their point about their opinions.

-To the real. I dont think you should let this guy get to ya. You should continue to post just like any one of us. If they cant handle it tough. Thats my vote.

      • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

You are thereal, aren’t you? you are not fooling anyone……haaaa

        • Dirtysanchez says:

nope…Granted im flattered for the comparison but no im not real. Im a noob here.

  38. dwright2 says:

the mets are driving so crazy i thought i saw wagner and show putting out the tarp

  39. kd bart says:

It is all about accountability. No one is accountable for th epoor play. You think anyone wll be sent down to Single A like Dontrelle Willis was?

  40. dr jones says:

    this is just sad..

  41. EV says:

Anyone want to take dibs on this homestand, I got 1-5, they are going to get swept by the Dbacks now after losing the most winable game of the three. I think they will somehow beat the Rangers in one game, probably the one Pedro starts. Watch Josh Hamilton will probably pull a Jose Guillen on us this weekend.

  42. Mr. Mets Butler says:

The bullpen didn’t totally let us down tonight guys. Wagner and Show looked pretty good holding down the tarp. No?

  43. NegativeFan says:

Willie reminds me of Norma Desmond at this point.

“We’re gonna get on a nice little roll” = “I’m ready for my closeup now Mr. DeMille”

  44. dr jones says:

Its time the paper bag heads come out to play. I’m thinking of going tomorrow night with a few buds and sitting in the upper tank with paper bags over our heads.

  45. NadyFan says:

Willie will be the one “Getting on a little roll” soon. He will be rolling right out of here!!!!!!!!!!!

    • metaje says:

nah….that would be the smart thing 2 do

      • metsgo says:

Willie will be here to the end of the year why fire him now its to late for anything to happen stop thinking that omars going to fire him or pull off some kind of a trade Omar is even starting to belleive that this year is just a big mistake look at his comments in yesterdays papers .
There is a very bright side to all of this
Next year Delgados gone Pedros gone Olivers gone Moises is gone Easleys gone El duke is gone I might have missed a couple others but the big thing is about 54 million dollars is gone to
Castillo can become a bench player, well get a left feilder
a claen up hitting first basemen and two starting pitchers and next year well be fine when the phillies will begin there never ending down turn because they will spend there allowance on lidge and burrell the braves will have no one left after this year as well the thing that we will have is empty spots to fill but money to fill them

I’m in Central Jersey, so all of a sudden I got Philly fans comin out of the woodwork. I got my Mets cap on (yes, I still wear it) in the supermarket, and some dolt yells out from across the aisle, “your team ever gonna win another game or what?”

Seriously, what the hell am I gonna do in the middle of a Wegman’s? I’d like to grab that Asian pear sitting beside me and chuck it at his fat skull, but it would be a pity to waste such a fine piece of fruit on this animal.

Instead I just resort to the ole classic middle digit and go on my way as he chukles in the distance.

    It’s just that painful…

    • Boooooo says:

im in central jersey too.. id rather fo to a lakewood blueclaws game than watch the mets right now…

i am realy considering making my 2 year old a phillies fan..

at least then he wouldnt have the whole ‘yankee step son’ thing goign on.

he would just have to suffer through jets, knicks, and rangers hell

    • KinersKornerman says:

Just say “10,000 losses. Still the all-time record.”

    • aznJoe says:

you sir are one of the remaining good baseball fans out there not using violence. i give u a two thumbs up.

    • NY Cuban says:

I was in that Wegmans today. LOL!

  47. NadyFan says:

I hope no is planning on waisting Fathers Day going to Shea to watch these bums. What a waist that would be.

  48. NadyFan says:

I think the Mets need to get pumped up on Viagra just like Roger.

    • aznJoe says:

nah……no v-roids for them. i think the team needs some of those Ms. beltran homemade sandwiches.

  49. NY Cuban says:

Well, we are still in first pl…. oh wait, that was last years line.
Well, its only Apr…oh, thats not it
Well, its only May…nope, thats done too
Well, we still have 100 ga…nope, under that number.

Whats the general consensus, anger or apathy?

    • Mookie 1986 says:

It’ll be that much sweeter once we’re sipping the champagne!

    • KinersKornerman says:

We’re in one of the five stages of Metsfandom:

      Denial
      Anger
      Bargaining
      Depression
      Acceptance

      • Lets_Go_Mets says:

I am somewhere between depression and acceptance. I entered the denial phase last summer, anger in September, bargaining at the start of this season, and depression after this season started going downhill in May.

        • aznJoe says:

i am almost at the point of acceptance. if Webb destroys the Mets tomorrow, then i will be at the acceptance stage.

  50. NY Cuban says:

    Bring back Anna Benson!

  51. NadyFan says:

Consensus? How about “Resigned” As in resigned to the fact that this team is done.

  52. NadyFan says:

Resignation: The formal act of giving up or quitting. It can also refer to the act of admitting defeat

  53. Airfeet says:

    I’m NOT happy….NOT happy

  54. Airfeet says:

THe best thing we can do is go into 2009 Citi Field with a new team. Keep Wright Reyes Santana and i guess Maine and get rid of the rest of the team and rebuild for the future…we’ll begin our dynasty in 2011 some time

  55. ravin108 says:

I made a similar comment above but I will post my plan for the Mets if I were GM.

    1. Let Willie go, hire Ken Oberkfell as manager (if he’s not a controversial character). The reason is that managers need not be big names. The focus should be taken away from the manager and placed more on the players.
1a. Give Oberkfell the rest of the season and off-season to decide his coaching staff. If he doesn’t work well with the current coaches, allow him to select new staff at any time. Communication among the coaching staff is essential.
    2. Change the culture of the team and define the clear leaders of the Mets as Johan, Maine, Beltran, Wright, and Reyes (Wagner to a lesser extent).
2a. I believe Alou has value and if we can get a B-prospect for him, we should take it.
2b. Trade Heilman if we can get a young starter with middle rotation potential. Preferably, a ground ball pitcher because I anticipate the Mets to having solid infield (and outfield) defense.
2c. Determine the value of Easley, Anderson, and Casanova on the trade block. Either Easley or Anderson should be traded.
2d. I see the Mets bench consisting of solid defensive players like Endy, Anderson Hernandez, and Pagan and solid hitters like the two AAA sluggers. Delgado is best served staying on the team and the Mets trying out the minor leaguers (like Carp) to be the Mets 2009 starting 1B. I don’t want our 2009 1B to be Tiexeira. He’s streaky, which bodes poorly for new york and he’s not worth the long contract.

With a form of this realistic plan put in place, there is much for Mets fans to watch for. Also, there is not much the Mets will lose here. In fact, this equation could spark contention among a team that will still be very talented

    • metsgo says:

Have you ever sen carp or pascucci play first base they both suck

      • metsgo says:

Also the only thing thats going to happen for easley and anderson as far as a trade is that they are going to both be released

        • ravin108 says:

If its even some “player to be named later” that we never hear from again, that’s fine. It would be nice for their contracts to be picked up though

      • ravin108 says:

Point taken. What about Murphy. And I was aware of Pascutti’s bad D. That’s why he’d just be used as a PH.

        • metsgo says:

More of a third basemen he will be good trade bait

        • metsgo says:

There is a reason why the mets arent bringing some of these guys up and the reason is to trade them if they bring these guys up and they nick evans it or in other words stink they are forever jaded

        • ravin108 says:

I don’t get how Carp, Evans, and Murphy all field righty. Carp and Murphy bat lefty. It would be nice to get good fielding from one of these guys batting 270 with 15 homers, 65 rbis or something of the sort.

        • metsgo says:

These guys need to keep having the years that they are having till the deadline so they could bring us younger talent no other team is going to trade major league ready talent for this group unless they are pending free agents or there is an overabundance in there club

        • ravin108 says:

Trading AA talent for even younger talent isn’t what they need to do. The Mets need to see which one or two from this group will help the Mets the most in the future which may take 1 or two more seasons. The players who are not helpful will be traded for another need.

    • ravin108 says:

With this in place, I want the new Mets lineup to be
      1. Reyes
      2. Castillo
      3. Beltran
      4. Church
      5. Wright
      6. Delgado
      7. Schneider
      8. Endy/Pagan/other possibilities
      9. Pitcher

Of course, these players need to be healthy. But the reasoning behind this lineup is that the OBP and speed of Reyes, Castillo, and Beltran are all great. Church should always see men on base and has protection with Wright behind him. Wright is just a good hitter. Delgado and Schneider is the dry spot of the lineup, unfortunately, but speed in the 8 spot can help transition the lineup back to the top.

    • ravin108 says:

This plan is by no means perfect. I just checked and Anderson Hernandez can’t hit a softball at AAA and he has 10 errors. I think this plan has the right approach though to change the culture of that clubhouse and restore leadership where it truly belongs.

  56. aznJoe says:

C’mon Big Pelf…just keep the team in the game and help get this pathetic a W tomorrow to start a winning streak. Let’s go Big Pelf aka Big Donkey.

    • NadyFan says:

Yeah right, I’m sure Webb will have something to say about that.

      • aznJoe says:

yeah…Webb is almost unstoppable at Shea but i just hope this time luck will be at big donkey’s side.

        • NadyFan says:

I think this team is beyound luck. luck would be if Willie would walk in tomorrow and just throw his hands up in the air and say “That’s it, I quit” Now that would be luck in our favor.

        • metsgo says:

If I were willie I wouldnt care if they fired me At this point I probabley would quit

        • aznJoe says:

for willie to say i quit, is a luck that will never happen. he ain’t stupid to give up on a lot of money.

        • NadyFan says:

          I know, just wishful thinking.

  57. Airfeet says:

First of all..we need to trade Beltran and Wagner…From both of these players we can get some serious young arms and bats…The reason we need to trade Wagner is simple. Wagner is very old, and i really dont think the team can win within hte next 2 years, so trade him.

  58. NadyFan says:

At this point Airfeet, any move would be appreciated by mets fan. What could it hurt? What is painfully obvious is that the current players are just not getting the job. Heck, I’ll even applaud a change in Bat Boys! Just do something, Please.

    • aznJoe says:

why is it that this team does not have ball girls like other team does?

      • NadyFan says:

Because the Ball Girls are already playing on the field!

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Because the Wilpons want people to have fun, but not TOO much fun. The Brooklyn Dodgers would never approve of all of the resulting impure thoughts.

  59. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

considering how much value bullpen arms have at the deadline if we’re out of it i say trade wagner you could definitely get GOOD value for him and frankly i dont see us winning the WS in 09 anyway so he’d be gone after that season if he doesnt retire at the end of this one.

  60. sidd finch says:

Cow bell man is the most dedicated fan ive ever met. haha seriously though.

I’m pretty much giving up on this team, but I still won’t boo ‘em. Leave that to the fans who have been going to Shea for 2 years and expect the world and don’t know baseball.

What do you guys think about Kenny Lofton? Could it hurt? Or will his bad clubhouse attitude bring us down more?

By the way, I don’t know why I dont boo Heilman when he comes out. I cheered right in his face cuz i was in right field orange corner by the dream seats. He always lets me down. The whole team seems to. I don’t know what we’re gonna do.

Sorry, not much of a productive post. I think everyone can appreciate my venting.

    Lets Go Mets.

    • aznJoe says:

i have come to the point of accepting the team as a bad team now, i will never boo any of the players.

  61. Airfeet says:

maybe the problem is that our entire team is latino, we have only 2 black players on our team and they are useless utility men, and we have a black manager, obviously theres no communication our manager doesnt even speak the same laguage as all our players. We either need a latino manager, or start getting some american players on our team

    • sidd finch says:

Pulling the race card (AGAIN) is the last thing we need i think

      • aznJoe says:

i don’t think the problems is due to race, it seems to be more about the mind-set of the manager. willie does not seem to be challenging any of his players on different aspects of the game like he did in 2005 and 2006.

        • sidd finch says:

I think they need a manager who’s gonna scream at them after a game like this.

I don’t know what goes on in the clubhouse but it doesnt seem like WIllie is doing anything to spark this team.

  62. metsluc says:

finch your right, a week or so ago, the white sox lost a terrible game (much like the one the mets lost tonight) .. ozzie guillen went crazy, threw a fit ……. and the white sox went on to win something like 7 in a row.

  63. a817 says:

Any Body else rooting for the mets to loose and get a better draft pick.?…

Oh wait Omar will loose that pick for a type A aging FA

  64. dykstraw II says:

the folks that were preaching restraint and patience 2-3 weeks ago are the ones posting the fix-it plans the alarmists were posting 2-3 weeks ago.

sorry, that train has sailed. insert fork into team.

  65. Chris in Japan says:

Wow! Even the Pirates have a better winning percentage than we do!

As much as I hate the fact that our bullpen can’t seem to hold a lead half the time, it’s the lineup that it the most depressing thing about this team. Since we can’t realistically rely on Alou, the only consistent hitter on this team is Wright now. If I we’re Omar I’d do anything in my power to bring in a guy who’s capable of hitting .280 or .290 with some pop and can play the corner outfield positions. I don’t care if he occasionally butchers a ball in the OF here and there as long as he can hit for christ’s sake!

Somebody said it earlier, but have you looked at Beltran’s numbers lately?!! This guy should not be hitting cleanup for us!

The idea of signing Bonds is becoming more appealing each day.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind seeing Fernando out there in RF–if he’s healthy. Is he still on the minor league DL?

  66. ryno says:

I thought that Bobby would come back here no matter what, but it might take a lot of convincing if they continue to play this heartlessly the rest of the year.

Bobby has shown he doesn’t need a ton of talent to win, but he does need players that are willing to play all out, team baseball every game. There are, what, three players on this team that fit the bill?

  67. sincekindergarten says:

I think that we all can agree that Mr. Beltran’s words in ST (”Tell Rollins that we’re the team to beat now”) were just that. As much as I can’t stand Rollins, I have to give him credit–he goes out and backs up his words.

We now know that Willie’s words, whatever they are, are just that–words, with nothing to back them up. We can figure that the Wilpons’ words about the team are just that–words, with nothing to back them up. If the Wilpons told Willie to “Just win, baby” a couple of weeks ago, and he hasn’t, and the Wilpons kleep Willie asa manager, then we know that the Wilpons didn’t mean those words.

So, why should we believe anyone on the team when they say that they can turn it around? It’s just talk, and talk is cheap.

Back it up and get the fans back.

  68. rusty shackleford says:

Blow this team up and take us out of our misery. Just field minor leaguers. Let the others be sent down and traded, The rest can sit on the bench for the rest of the year and embarrass them the way they embarrassing us.
Burn them all. And by the way, helping with the tarp, doesn’t show hustle. It shows utter stupidity. Blow your shoulder on a tarp incident. We got people for the tarp jack**s, go work on your slider!
Dear Mets fans, meet your new manager: Groundskeeper Willie.

  69. Bogar says:

According to the Daily News, the Mets had a team meeting before the game and the plan is to win 92 games. This year!

  70. npanzeca says:

In the Mets land of no accountability Randope, Omar, HoJo, and Jacket all still have jobs while the Wilpons continue to collect millions from the fans. What a nightmare and a joke, this team must be sold to someone who cares about something more than building a shrine to a team that doesn’t even exist (Brooklyn Dodgers).

  71. theperfectgame says:

Sweet, Mike “The Stopper” Pelfrey up against the puny Brandon Webb! Can you say guaranteed Mets victory??

    ugh…

    • rd says:

I heard the shops and restaurants are going to be beautiful in city field. You think there will be a lower ticket price option to use the shops and restaurants, and not be forced to watch baseball?

  72. terpz06 says:

Here’s my story from last night. We had seats in row Q, section 3 of the upper deck (I asked the guy for as close to the field as possible, so he gave me 6 rows from the top). Anyway, when the wind and rain came, we were sitting in our seats, enjoying the lightning and other elements. Then of course, Alex Anthony made the announcement that all fans should immediately get inside - the security guys came running to say it to.

Anyway, we’re dillydallying on the concourse and my friend says we should go sit in the field level. Our plan worked perfectly. We stood at the ramp where people were leaving the field and asked “are you leaving? are you leaving?” If we got a yes, we asked if we could have their tickets (provided they were field level). We wound up with 5 tickets for 6 people.

Five of us went in gate B, the other waited at gate D (we had tried to get in at gate C without tickets, so that wouldn’t work). So then one of us went and got the 6th (with 2 tickets) and went in at gate D. We wound up 10 rows behind the Mets on deck circle.

Which, incidentally was where the moronic “Bobby V” chant was coming from. This was while Sanchez was in the process of giving up 2 hrs and 3 runs, so I started my own chant: “Turk Wendell! Turk Wendell!” The point is, Willie is and never has been the problem. Is he pitching? Is he hitting? The team is not good, can’t anyone understand this? This is, apparently, a .500 team AT BEST. Let’s get used to it and lower our expectations so the summer isn’t too long.

  73. capitalcitygoofball says:

The most entertaining thing about that game was the home plate umpire’s strike calls.

    HIIIIIIIII—EEEEEKKKKK!!!!

    The Mets are a joke.

    • NYMBosco says:

I was at the game last night and most fans I spoke to could not believe that willie pulled maine after 5 innings! So he was at 100 pitches why the hell did he not go out for one more inning? Vargas???? Willie is a dope….He just keeps giving games away…Get him out of town forever and throw petersen out with him!

  74. First of all, Maine looked good, for a while, is slightly difficult to analyze since “A While” was really only 5-innings. In addition, it doesn’t necessarily seem too fair, when your bullpen pitches almost the precise amount of innings as your starter.

I have a slight issue with a Mets’ pitcher being completely analyzed when they don’t even make it to the 6th-inning.
