Stats: Where Mo Goes, the Mets Go
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 10, 2008 12:55 pm

In the 97 games Moises Alou has started over the last two seasons, the Mets are 53–44, during which they’re averaging 5.5 runs per games.

In the 127 games he has missed, the Mets are 65–62 while averaging 4.4 runs per game.

What’s more, David Wright is batting .339 with Alou in the lineup, while batting .291 in his absence.

Similarly, Carlos Beltran is batting .313 with Alou in the lineup, but .238 with him out of the lineup.

…thanks to the Elias Sports Bureau for the outstanding research

Following Sunday’s game, Alou told reporters that he will return from the disabled list today.

However, according to the team, Alou will work out at Shea Stadium this afternoon, at which point they will decide whether to activate him or not.

Doesn’t surprise me, this was the same problem we saw after they traded Nady, the offense became a lot more inconsistent because it lacked that right handed bat. Same kind of thing. Alou was a good solution to that problem…10 years ago.

  2. patrick says:

amazing, Wright and Beltran hit, the team scores a run extra a game and they barely fart out a couple more wins, that seems to indicate that they either score runs in bigger bunches or get walloped in the bullpen.

  3. fortleemets says:

That is a pointless stat. Alou was on the team last september. That’s the only stat that should matter.

  4. boozermetsfan says:

    sad

  5. UnclePauly says:

hard not to be negative, but lets hope he stays healthy and helps out.

This strikes me as misleading, though i may be misled by my own bad memories.

I recall that Alou’s big hit streak was right at the same time as the Mets collapse, and that really only Wright was also hitting. My memory is that Alou started and hit in many games the Mets lost down the stretch.

The man is a professional hitter, and I’ll take what he can give us **if** we got a more solid backup option, but I sure do wish that “where Mo went, the Mets went” last September and not over the course of 2 seasons.

    • stickguy says:

It wasn’t the offense that folded last September, it was the pitching (with a little hepl from the Defense)

Think about games where they would get a 2-4 run lead, lose it, get another one, lose it, etc. Well, those leads were coming from somewhere!

      • backinbusiness says:

That’s fair, but not entirely so. Here is September 2007 (close your eyes if you don’t want to revisit) starting Sept 11 (does anyone remember that we won 9 in a row the previous 9???). I have bolded those games where Alou hit and Mets lost:

        Sep 11 Home v. ATL (L: 5-13) Alou (2-4)
        Sep 12 Home v. ATL (W: 4-3) Alou (1-4)
        Sep 14 Home v. PHI (L: 2-3) Alou (1-4)
        Sep 15 Home v. PHI (L: 3-5) Alou (1-4)
        Sep 16 Home v. PHI (L: 6-10) Alou (3-4)
        Sep 17 @WSN (L: 4-12) Alou (2-4)
        Sep 18 @WSN (L: 8-9) Alou (2-3)
        Sep 19 @WSN (W: 8-4) Alou (3-4)
        Sep 20 @FLA (L: 7-8) Alou (1-5)
        Sep 21 @FLA (W: 9-6) Alou (1-5)
        Sep 22 @FLA (W: 7-2) Alou (1-5)
        Sep 23 @FLA (W: 7-6) Alou (2-6)
        Sep 24 Home v. WSN (L: 4-13) Alou (1-5)
        Sep 25 Home v. WSN (L: 9-10) Alou (4-5)
        Sep 26 Home v. WSN (L: 6-9) Alou (2-4)
        Sep 27 Home v. STL (L: 0-3) Alou (0-3)
        Sep 28 Home v. FLA (L: 4-7) Alou (0-4)
        Sep 29 Home v. FLA (W: 13-0) Alou (2-4)
        Sep 30 Home v. FLA (L: 1-8) Alou (1-4)

In other words, in a stretch where the Mets went 6-13, Alou went 11-13. The Mets scored 4 runs or fewer in 6 of those 13 games.

        • HoJoWright says:

don’t ever post those september results again, i feel like puking. thanks. i do see your point though

        • backinbusiness says:

yeah i felt the same way and removed the bold. disgusting.

        • HoJoWright says:

yeah, it really is unbelievable to look back at that, 2 five game losing streaks over a 19 game stretch, wow. this is the first time i’ve seen it broken down. wow. luckily things were looking good this off season with santana coming over and pagan and church raking to start this season…aaahhhh the life of a mets fan

        • SheaVendor says:

Actually they did not win 9 in row coming into the dates you mention. Going into the final 17 games however (beginning with the Sep 14th game against PHI.) the Mets had won 10 of 12 to stretch their lead to 7 1/2 games. Then came the unthinkable.

BTW the longest winning streak the Mets had in 2007 was 5.

        • backinbusiness says:

My bad — the Mets won 5, lost 1, won 4. Alou did not play in the intermediary loss and I was looking at his gamelog.

          Thanks.

        • MudvilleNine says:

To be honest, looking at those scores, it pretty much says the pitching was horrible for the most part. We scored plenty of runs in many of those loses.

  7. stickguy says:

This just proves what many said before the season. The line up was short 1 big power bat (yes, a Carlos Lee would look real good right now!)

Or more accurately, the offense looked good, on paper, but only if Alou stayed (mostly) on the field, and hit, and Delgado had a bit of a power resergance.

Well, neither one happened, and the problem was compounded by losing Church, and having Slappy at 2B (and 0 power from C)

    • mikey_FF says:

That’s right stick. All this proves is what some of us have been saying. The Mets don’t have a clean up hitter. Beltran performs better when we have a clean up hitter, because Beltran is not a clean up hitter. The team performs better when we have a clean up hitter.

The reliance on Alou and Delgado the past 2 seasons is a big reason why the Mets are where they are. Omar didn’t fix the problem, He ignored it.

    • redhobbes says:

exactly, Mets need to admit that they’re short a cleanup hitter and move Beltran the the 2 hole where he belongs

  8. Knuckles99 says:

Yup, that sums the Mets up.

  9. SheaVendor says:

What are the odds Alou gets hurt during this afternoon’s “workout”??

  10. altru426 says:

    this is exactly the problem
he has missed 127 games in less than 2 seasons…

  11. iamatwork says:

I wonder what the mets record with Endy in is… probably like 48-188.

    Just a guess.

  12. Mike_M says:

I agree with the backinbusiness that this is misleading. First of all, merely citing what Wright’s and Beltran’s batting average was during an unspecified amount of at bats isn’t enough to me to show Alou’s impact on other players in the line up. Yes, I’ll agree that in limited time Alou had a very good year, but Church has basically replaced his production.

    Alou (328 ABs): 13 HR .341/.392/.524
    Church (180 ABs): 10 HR .300/.365/.522

Alou alone will not change this team. If the mets were lucky enough to have them both healthy and in the line up at the same time, I would be thrilled.
