eMailbag: Why Charity Event after Trip
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 11, 2008 2:33 pm

Chris G sent in the following e-mail, asking:

“Can you explain to me what genius in the Mets organization decided it would be a good idea to schedule a charity event on the first off-day following a stretch of 21 straight games played, following their second road trip to the West Coast in two weeks?”

i complained of this yesterday, as well, as did Keith Hernandez during Sunday’s broadcast…

…from what i understand, to the team’s credit, they did check with all sorts of people during spring training, from the players to Omar Minaya to Willie Randolph, when trying to find a date that worked for every one involved…also, several players joined on last minute, which would suggest they did not view this as the monumental inconvenience that you and i see it as…

…that said, despite what the players said, i just feel like the decision makers could have done the team a favor of allowing a true off day following such a bizarre and tedious travel schedule…of course, if the team was winning right now, i doubt i’d be writing any of this…

What I don’t understand is why are the Mets going BACK to the West Coast again next week? What is that three separate trips in six weeks?

    • There's Always '09 says:

i couldn’t agree with you more. they were out there for dodgers/d’backs on one trip. then they went to colorado (i would consider that very close to a west coast swing). then they went to san fran and san diego. then they are going to L.A. and Colorado again!!! that schedule is insanity. Three west coast trips since April is poor scheduling, any way you slice it.

      • the Straw says:

I just hope most of the guys on this current team dont come back from the next west coast trip. They can stay in Cali for the rest of the year for all i care.

  2. commentswontnestbelowthislevel says:

everything is magnified right now and people are just pissy…

if we are winning, no one cares about this team doing a charity event after a road trip

  3. ebfnyc says:

The schedule-maker at MLB doesn’t care about how it taxes the players. The Mets didn’t complain to MLB about scheduling problems prior to the schedule completion. They dropped the ball.

  4. reddog2669 says:

Anyone hear Keith complain about it as Cohen awkwardly tried to change the subject?

    • metsfan227 says:

Yep….considering it was for charity maybe Keith should have only expressed his complaints internally.

      • Boscov says:

In other sports I understand the travel qualms. I understand because most other sports are contact sports. Sure baseball is a very long season, greuling on the mind, takes a physical toll, etc….but the reason these men are able to play 162 games is because the game is simply not that demanding on the body. Yes these guys need to be in shape to maximize their abilities, etc. But there’s no tackling, no fouling, no checking – maybe once every 6 games there’s a catcher getting bowled over at home plate. But I just HATE this travel shmavel excuse used for baseball teams. The Mets have made these trips before and come out winning most of their games. That’s it, case is closed.

        • Ceetar says:

Travel has come a long way in baseball. sure 3 hour time changes are kind of annoying, and a couple of long plane trips frequently are kind of a pain, but it’s definitely not an excuse.

I think it’s more of an issue than other sports though. often times baseball players have to travel in the night, don’t get much sleep, play in two cities back to back days..etc. Football players have plenty of time to get to a new city, all they have to do is sit on a plane, hell they’re already over jet lag by the time the game rolls around. They have almost a week from landing to playtime.

You know, something tells me a bunch of disgustingly rich men in their 20’s and 30’s wouldn’t have stayed in bed watching TV on Monday if it weren’t for the charity event.

They got the day off from the physical toll of baseball. So what if they spent a couple hours doing something good for teh world? They work 6 hours a day, including pre/post game routines. None of them are sleep deprived (avoiding the obvious Castro joke).

I’m not saying you don’t need a day off in the sense of not having a baseball game, but that doesn’t mean players should have to stay home and do nothing on that day.

Why don’t we commend these guys for using their time for a good cause on their only off day rather than criticize them for it? I think criticizing players for being charitable is grasping for straws at this point. Some commenters will find any reason to complain…

    • metsfan227 says:

I agree and posted somthing similar the other day. I have no issue with this. For me, this is a complete non-story.

    • Ceetar says:

I don’t know about 6 hours. They’re already taking public batting pratice 2.5 hours before the game, and by then they’ve usually been there for hours. Like 1pm and then don’t get to leave until probably 11. but I guess that’s besides the point. A lot of these guys would be up working out anyway, and a short trip somewhere for a couple of hours is basically nothing. It’s not like it was interfering with anything other than the ability to not leave their beds all day, but no one is suggestingtaht’s what they were doing.

  6. SoCalMetsFan says:

Well maybe… just maybe… because we are getting all of this out of the way now we will be all nice and rested and ready to start winning since we only travel west of the Mississippi once after the all-star break.

  7. stickguy says:

that’s the key. If they are being hurt by the bad schedule now, they need to take advantage of the easier one later.

Plus, the Phils seem to have spent all year on the east coast, most of it at home. Wait til they start accumulating some jet lag points!

  8. helicopter ben johnson says:

Ive noticed that the more this season circles the drain, the more often i check metsblog. i need to get a life.

  9. UnclePauly says:

reading metsblog is like slowing down to see a car accident. I can’t stop myself, but i know it’s nothing i want to see.

    • TBlz says:

That has to be the most perfect description of the way this site and season are going right now.

Let’s not give these guys anymore excuses for playing like this, please. It would be one thing if the SD series was hard-fought and full of energy-sapping offense. Uhhh, nope.

It would be one thing if the series was filled with gutsy starting pitching deep into the games. Uhhh, oops. Not that either.

      • Boscov says:

Haha exactly. This is how my mind works:

Oh man, bloew a 5-1 lead and lost. Tough loss. God dang they can’t get it together. If I go to Metsblog right now my computer will start smoking. It might blow up. I wonder what these guys are saying on the blog right now. But what’s the point in checking? I know what they’re saying? Forget it, I watched the game with my own eyes I don’t need to hear other people complain about it.

        [I sign onto the blog]

  10. RPsJacket says:

everyone is desperate for a 5 game winning streak, the fans more than anyone. god knows what will be blogged in a month if this keeps up.

  11. kingrw says:

    this is a total non-story…

they were schmoozing with rich people in a fancy upscale greenwich conn locale, not building houses….

if anyone of them needed to decompress in the dark of their secret caves, i’m sure ownership would give them a pass….

    • ebfnyc says:

the mets have a tough life. i feel soo bad that they have to do an event after playing a game on the west coast for big money. lol

  12. SheaVendor says:

A 5 game win streak? I think they haven’t had one of those in two years!!

  13. hbean says:

This wouldnt even have been an article if the mets went 5-2 or 6-1 (or even 4-3) on the road trip. The press is just silly.

  14. foul bunt strikeout says:

    Off topic

I don’t know why but when Ramon Castro overslept for the Padre game and was benched, it made me think of the move “Meatballs”

Ramon’s pocket schedule going off and him waking up on his bed on a raft in the middle of the lake, while the team laughs and rides away in the bus to Petco (all while that cheesy song from the movie plays in the background)

sorry if thats real random but just trying to pass the time at work

  15. slanginsanjuan says:

this is not fun for me. this is not fun for you. this is not fun for them. but i bet it’s really not fun for the metsbloggers who have to write something everyday about the team while trying to be politically and commercially correct…to a degree.

    gentlemen. this medalla’s for you!

  16. uncleixijesse says:

they get paid millions and get plenty of offtime…its charity…man up

  17. dap260 says:

Maybe they were prescient back in the Spring, and knew that this was one of the few forums where the team was guaranteed to get applause. It was also a relatively risk free way to spend a day for our injury prone players.

  18. slanginsanjuan says:

    prescient

*knowledge of things before they exist or happen; foreknowledge; foresight.

    prescient.

    *who tawks like that?

  19. Joseisbetter says:

How can people complain about this? There is more to life then baseball, ala charity! Good for the Mets to find time in their busy schedule to help people out.

Karma anyone? Maybe this will help…
