Note: Pelfrey is Wagner’s MVP

by Matthew Cerrone on June 12th, 2008 at 6:40 am

Billy Wagner followed up Mike Pelfrey‘s eight scoreless innings last night by allowing a double and a home run in the ninth inning to tie the game, while blowing his second consecutive save.

Wagner, talking to reporters after the game, said:

“Pelfrey pitched great…To go out there and lay an egg, it’s hard. It stinks…Any time you’ve got the lead going in to the ninth, you gotta win that game. The guys battled, the guys came in behind me and kept us in the game. Beltran did what he usually does, and he won the game for us…Unfortunately, Pelfrey didn’t get the win, but he was the MVP of this game.”

In the span of two appearances, Wagner’s ERA has jumped from 0.36 to 1.73.

Following Wagner’s blown save last night, Pedro Feliciano and Claudio Vargas each pitched a scoreless inning, while Aaron Heilman tossed two scoreless innings, during which he struck out three – combined, they allowed just four runners to reach base in the four total innings.
