Following tonight’s game, Omar Minaya announced the Mets have acquired OF Trot Nixon from the Diamondbacks for cash or a player to be named later.
Nixon was batting .309 with a .437 OBP, 15 2B, 10 HR and 31 RBI in 181 at-bats for the D-backs Triple-A Tucson affiliate.
He hit .288 after the All-Star break last season, and reached base safely in 67 of 98 games.
…i like the move…i will like it even more if he replaces Robinson Cancel on the roster…
According to Minaya, Nixon will join the team tomorrow and be ready for the game.
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…i like this guy…he’s a tough, hard-nosed player, who can hit from the left side, who was won in the past, and who’ll play solid defense…but, most importantly, he’ll bring a little grit that i believe this team is need of…
Tagged Mike Nichols, Trot Nixon |The Mets (32-34) defeated the Rangers (34–34) by the score of 7 to 1 in Shea Stadium tonight.

I’m not one for using the term ‘must win,’ unless it’s a game that can mathematically end a season, but this game tonight, given all the turmoil and rumor surrounding Willie Randolph’s job, was as close to a ‘must win’ as you’ll get in June…and the Mets won it.
However, in case you missed it, know that the team played with a lot of hustle tonight; Oliver Perez looked great while keeping the ball down in the strike zone; the Mets tacked on insurance runs, including a two-RBI single from Perez; Carlos Delgado did a lot of smiling, as did Randolph and others; and, lastly, Scott Schoeneweis and Duaner Sanchez pitched two scoreless innings in relief, during which the large crowd was mostly silent, probably because it’s hard to shout and scream when you’re holding your breath and praying the entire time.
Hopefully this is the start of, ‘a nice little rhythm.’
Like NBC’s Tim Russert, a man who I idolized, used to say, ‘Go get ‘em, guys.’
The Mets continue their series with the Rangers tomorrow night at Shea Stadium, with Pedro Martinez facing Kason Gabbard.
Willie Randolph, prior to tonight’s game, when asked if he is aware of rumors that his job could be in jeopardy:
“I’m here. You see me. I’m still here (patting himself down). Yeah, man. I can’t control what’s said and written and stuff. I just come to work here ready to go, and put these guys in a spot where they can produce and finish up strong on this home stand.”
…you know what, this is freaking ridiculous…i mean, either come out and say the guy is your manager, through at least the all-star break, or can him…seriously, by letting all of this ‘buzz’ leak, they are undermining his authority, putting the team on eggshells, and, more importantly, driving me crazy…
…what i don’t understand is, like Matt Yalloff said during SNY’s Pre Game Show, if willie was good enough for ownership at the end of last season, and good enough to start this season, and good enough to manage tonight’s game, how is he not good enough to manage tomorrow’s game…
…make…up…your minds…already…so this team can know who is boss and get on with concentrating on winning baseball games and making the post season…

Tagged Mike Nichols |The Mets have announced that they will make up last month’s rainout against the Yankees on Friday, June 27, at 2:10 pm as part of a day-night, split-stadium doubleheader with Game 2 back at Shea Stadium at 8 pm.
The Mets have put Moises Alou back on the 15-day disabled list and recalled C Robinson Cancel from New Orleans.
…i swear i made this exact post last month, didn’t i…
…i just don’t understand why a third-string catcher is promoted to replace a top-hitting left fielder…
…the buzz from people around the Mets is out of control, all suggesting that Willie Randolph could be fired as early as this weekend, depending on how the team performs in the next few days…
…in short, all sorts of people connected to the team are preparing for how best to handle life after willie…
…initially, i was under the impression he would at least get until the off day between playing the Angels and Rockies on the road, but things are sounding more serious than that…
…it appears willie only has one or two supporters left among the braintrust, and those supporters are running out of ways to defend him…
According to a report by SI.com’s Jon Heyman, if Randolph is fired, Jerry Manuel will take over as manager.
…Update…5:30 pm…
Omar Minaya told reporters before tonight’s game that, just like on Memorial Day, Willie Randolph has his support and the support of the team’s ownership.
Tagged Willie Randolph |The Mets will officially announce tonight that they have signed first-round pick Reese Havens.
Havens will be at Shea Stadium to take batting practice.
…lovely…the kid has front row seats to what will certain be a total pre-game circus involving questions about the manager, losing streaks, the state of the team, etc.,…take notes, kid, this could all be yours in a few years…
Two weeks ago, Willie Randolph ‘rested’ Carlos Delgado two games in a row, gave a few bench players the chance to start, and inserted a green rookie into the lineup. The result was seven wins in the team’s next nine games.
More importantly, it appeared as though their attitude had evolved, delivering come-from-behind wins and showing a ‘fight’ we haven’t seen since 2006.
Heck, even Delgado started hustling.
But it wasn’t enough of a spark, and the fire went out quickly.
Now the Mets are back to where they were before ‘the meeting,’ and
Maybe it’s batting Carlos Beltran leadoff, or sending Oliver Perez to the bullpen, or promoting Mike Carp and Val Pascucci and putting them both in the starting lineup. It’s more likely none of those illogical ideas, but the point is, what’s been done for the past 167 games has not been working.
It’s time to try something different – very different.
