I’m not one for using the term ‘must win,’ unless it’s a game that can mathematically end a season, but this game tonight, given all the turmoil and rumor surrounding Willie Randolph’s job, was as close to a ‘must win’ as you’ll get in June…and the Mets won it.
However, in case you missed it, know that the team played with a lot of hustle tonight; Oliver Perez looked great while keeping the ball down in the strike zone; the Mets tacked on insurance runs, including a two-RBI single from Perez; Carlos Delgado did a lot of smiling, as did Randolph and others; and, lastly, Scott Schoeneweis and Duaner Sanchez pitched two scoreless innings in relief, during which the large crowd was mostly silent, probably because it’s hard to shout and scream when you’re holding your breath and praying the entire time.
Hopefully this is the start of, ‘a nice little rhythm.’
Like NBC’s Tim Russert, a man who I idolized, used to say, ‘Go get ‘em, guys.’
The Mets continue their series with the Rangers tomorrow night at Shea Stadium, with Pedro Martinez facing Kason Gabbard.
