eMailbag: What Happened to the Apple?
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 16, 2008 11:44 am

Yesterday was supposed to be another day on which young children could run the bases at Shea Stadium prior to the game.

However, the last-minute double header canceled the event.

Pete Y sent in the following e-mail, writing…

“I bought tickets to Sunday’s game months ago so my two young daughters could run around the bases. Of course, fate strikes and the double header canceled it, much to their disappointment. But the real crushing blow? No Home Run Apple on the two Mets home runs. What the heck is up with that? They love seeing that thing come up on television, and they were almost in tears when it failed to pop up. So, my reputation took a big hit on Father’s Day. Dad says they can run around the bases? Nope. Dad says to watch the Apple come up? Nope. Thanks Dad.

“So, the burning question I have: is the Apple’s job in jeopardy? Was it benched for failing to hustle out of the hat on a previous home run? Did it oversleep and miss the game? Was it DFA’d?”

Ouch, Pete. Ouch.

According to the team, there was an electrical malfunction that shut down the Apple yesterday. They expect all issues to be resolved by the next home stand.

From what I can gather, the electrical issue had something to do with all of the rain that fell on Saturday.

there was an electrical malfunction that shut down the Apple yesterday

The hamster that runs around the wheel to make it pop up was found dead Sunday morning. Police are investigating. The Mets are expected to call up a replacement hamster from New Orleans before the next homestand.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Not surprisingly, they’re not going to put the dead hamster on the DL. Instead, they’re going to carry 3 hamsters on the roster.

      • DjDeF says:

That was great and gave me a good laugh

      • krumbledkookie says:

I dislike carrying three “hamsters” as much as anyone, but it paid off yesterday. I’d like to be able to say it was Willie’s genius, but it was just good luck.

        • There's Always '09 says:

Hey, with the amount of bad luck this team has hit into this year, we were bound to get a lucky break.

Not a moment too soon, either.

      • NorfolkTides says:

The dead hamster is still owed the last 5 years of his 8 year, $90 million contract. GM Omar Minaya now continues to look for other established hamsters, such as the Hamsterdance hamsters, to replace him. He looks to offer up the last three years first round draft hamsters in exchange.

    • patrick says:

Sadly Val Pascucci remains perplexed as the Zeps hamster gets the call before him.

In other news the Hamster was seen able to hit left handed pitching that Carlos Delgado could not.

    • garykeithron says:

rather than getting another hamster, the mets are going to try using a mouse or rat

    • lisametsfan says:

      Pete:
Hopefully you kept at least one ticket stub. I would write a letter ASAP to the Mets public relations office, saying exactly what you just wrote to metsblog about your children’s disappointment.

The Shea PR people in the past have been fantastic whenever we’ve had a complaint. We’ve gotten comp tickets on more than one occasion when we’ve reported incidents or poor conditions at Shea.

Good luck–I feel for you–every time I bring my niece and nephew to Shea, the minute a Met hits a HR, both their heads whip towards the apple in anticipation. So I can imagine how devastating it was for your kids to miss out on that…

      • atl0nym4 says:

that’s the saddest story I heard.I learned when i was way older kids, watching baseball and esp.rooting for the mets is filled with dissapointment and unrealized expectations.

    • gradeck says:

It stops working randomly and/or because of rain, but let’s move it over to Citi Field!

      Great idea, that.

The sentiment is nice but practicality is dead. Perhaps the “Save the Apple” people can focus their efforts to something more productive, like making the Citi Field seating chart available to the public. (Yes, the Mets have one. Why they won’t share it is a mystery).

  2. mrose says:

    booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  3. metmaniac89 says:

Willie should definately be fired for his failure to have the apple rise.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      lmaooo yes!!!

    • dcatmets41 says:

The sad truth is that most of the people on here probably feel that it IS Willie’s fault the apple doesnt rise. I mean its his fault for everything that goes wrong nowadays so the apple is just soemthing else, right?

      • ridethesnake says:

The sad truth is that no one feels it was Willie’s fault the apple malfunctioned, but that you believe the people that don’t like Willie have no rhyme or reason for their beliefs, and that all our criticisms are just pointless blame.

        • dcatmets41 says:

Actually I hear your criticisms and think that while some are legit most are unfounded and simply the whims of the average “what have you done for me lately fan” whose opinions on players, coaches, managers and front office personal change with the wind. Willie is second to only Davey Johnson as the most winning manager in mets history. He must be doing something right to get that many W’s with the old, aging, lazy, injury prone, poorly planned team with no decent backup plan that Omar put together.

        • recoton1 says:

I guess that Bobby Valentine character never managed here. Lord knows there have been so many managers that got the Mets to the postseason in consecutive years.

  4. Nutz15 says:

Do people not realize — the very same reason everyone wants to keep this apple…….is the reason we all want to get rid of it?

It’s simple: the thing’s a piece of crap, and has been for decades now.

I remember working downtown years ago, and a Yankee fan co-worker of mine telling me how he’d spend afternoons at Shea Stadium — while his electrician father was sent to work on and “fix” the elevator system in the “Crapple” — as he called it.

And this was back in the 80’s.

The staple of an afternoon at Shea….as a kid….was looking up to see the apple after a Darryl Strawberry or HoJo homer. More than half the time, the thing was out of order.

    DOWN WITH THE CRAPPLE!!!

Give us a new one, and don’t deface Citi Field with it.

    Thanks.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Was this topic really worth 200 words?

      • Nutz15 says:

If that was in response to me? I feel it was worth it.

Just for the very strange group of people who want to take a piece of crap papier mache — that never works — and make it the focal point of our new ballpark.

There are plenty of weirdos who actually want to do this.

        • reyesnwright says:

I’m not saying it’s not old and poorly put together, but this is the first time I have ever heard that it did not go up after a home run so to say that it never works may be a little harsh.

        • Nutz15 says:

You must be a new Met fan then…..and didn’t attend many games in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

        • reyesnwright says:

Well, I was born at the end of 83 so I guess I didn’t attend too many games in the 80s, and my memories of the ones I did attend are kind of hazy for some reason. I do however remember loving seeing the apple go up when I was about 5 or 6, so it must have worked at least some of the time back then. Even so, if this is the first time it didn’t work since the early 90s, about 15 years ago, itsn’t it a little much to say that it never works?

    • Ceetar says:

It amuses me that people want to transfer the decrepit thing.

Then again, there are people that want to keep that willet’s point area with all the junk yards, chop shops, and sump instead of a place with bars, hotels, a convention center..etc.

      • ravi3 says:

I’m fine with a new apple, but just not some cheap tricket out one

        • Ceetar says:

Not sure anyone was suggesting to be bright enough to be seen in Philly or shoot out parachuting Apples that kids could catch and eat..

          Hell..nevermind, I’m suggesting that. that’d be cool

      • dave27 says:

We should just leave the old apple right where it is – it’ll be sitting right outside Citifield. Put a fence around it and call it a day. It could still go up when someone homers inside.

        • effectivelywild says:

Thats what I’ve been saying. Leave it in the parking lot (where Shea currently stands) as a monument to Shea so fans can go take pictures in front of it. Then put a new one in Citi Field.

        • ToastyJoe says:

You want TWO apples? Oy vey…

  5. krumbledkookie says:

In different news, it’s pretty bush-league to cancel the kids opportunity to run around the bases because there was a double header.

They should have just canceled one of the games, because the kids would have run harder than some of the Mets probably did.

  6. swirlywand says:

Maybe the apple is JUST P*SSED OFF THAT IT’S BEEN DORMANT FOR SO LONG…It’s probably rusting from inactivity (and rain!)…and it’s been even longer since it’s popped up to celebrate a grand slam…(i know! i Know! anyday now, the METS might have a grand slam for the first time since 2006)…

At least our beloved Mr. Met will always be smiling….

    LET’S GO METS!

    • garykeithron says:

the apple’s sadly waiting for dwright…..

    • ToastyJoe says:

That’s a funny image – the apple comes up and it’s been so long that it’s covered in cobwebs and rain water.

    • garykeithron says:

      btw, Mr Met rules! :)

      • swirlywand says:

Absolutely he does! When I called my dad for father’s day yesterday he was watching the game on TV and said “It’s 7-2…can you believe that?…and Mr. Met is just shaking his head with his hands over his eyes…”…and something about that just made me **sigh**…. I then thanked my dad for raising me as a Mississippi State Bulldog fan so that I was well equipped to handle bad times for my teams! haha

        LET’S GO METS!

        • garykeithron says:

they need to bring back some mr met commercials. I saw one on youtube from years ago. the mets were on the road and a homestand was upcoming. one showed mr met spending his free time running in front of the radar gun and it kept showing his speed at 7 or 6. another showed him shooting tshirts at a groundscrewman and trying to hide in the seats with half his head sticking out

        • “you know, like 80% of your head is showing”

          good stuff

  7. Confused says:

it wasnt the rain, the apple wasnt working on thursday either.

  8. dykstraw II says:

while we’re complaining about crap – any other queens residents absolutely MISERABLE since the post game express 7 started running?

  9. Wayneoo says:

Was a post just taken down or am I losing my mind?

    • garykeithron says:

didn’t notice. do you remember what it said?

      • Wayneoo says:

Something about the Mets looking bad because of the way they are handling the manager situation.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Yeah, it was an excellent read too. What happened?

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yes, I saw it too. I clicked on it to start reading it, my screen froze, I hit refresh and it was gone. Saw enough of the title though to agree it was something about the Mets looking bad becasue of the way this whole Willie thing has been handled up to now.

I figured it was pulled for a reason, but hoped it was to reappear. So far, I haven’t seen it.

  10. Felix the Cat says:

Pretty funny. I took my two young daughters (5 and 8) to the game yesterday too and they were also disappointed that they weren’t go to be able to run the bases. My oldest daughter even asked me why the apple didn’t come up and I didn’t have an answer for her.

  11. ness589 says:

They should just dump the apple. I saw it’s canister in Citi Field and I hate it. It’s gonna mess up some HRs.

  12. TurboDan says:

I was at last Thursday’s day game and it didn’t come up then either. It didn’t have anything to do with the rain.

    FIRE JAY HORWITZ!

    LOL.

  13. metsfanbook says:

I reported on my blog that it didn’t come up on Thursday for Castro’s home run. I think something is up, or at least seriously broken. Unlike some of you, I want the real, crummy stinky original apple to make the move to Citifield. I want some link to the Mets’ scruffy past in the new yuppie stadium.

  14. nrmax88 says:

Pete should feel lucky the dynamet dash (if that is still the name) was cancelled. I went to that as a kid, and I hated it even then. You get to stand in the blazing heat for about 2-3 hours, then walk around the field. Yay. Fun.
