News: BP on Peterson’s Status
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 16, 2008 9:05 pm

Earlier tonight, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus reported that Rick Peterson had been fired by the Mets.

However, in an update a few minutes later, he wrote that his sources were ‘incorrect,’ adding…

“My apologies for the error.  I consistently got “no comments” from Mets sources and do believe that Peterson remains in jeopardy.  However, that decision has not yet been made … or made public.”

…will has solid sources, and is ahead of the curve on a lot of inside information, so, i wouldn’t dismiss what he was getting at…in other words, my hunch is that peterson is in super-serious trouble at this point…we’ll see…

…either way, it’s official, i’m going off the rails on a crazy train

To quote a great man, Wesley Willis, may he rest in peace, “Cut the freakin mullet.”

  2. pac_manjones says:

PEACE JACKET. I bet Omar told the Wilpons he could fire Rick “in ten minutes.” Hopefully, Willie comes within the next 10 minutes. Jerry Manuel for manager by gametime!

    • Midtown says:

In reference to the 10 minutes comment, GET OVER IT. Aside from that, Rick has done nothing but work miracles with the pitching staff (Maine and Ollie were scrubs, and I’m not inclined to believe he didn’t play a large part in their resurrection).

Somebody please explain to me why Peterson is on the chopping block, when our BA is 22nd lowest in baseball, and our offense can’t score more than 3 runs a game. Moves like this are precisely why this organization is going nowhere.

      FIRE HOJO!

      • Met_Fan_from_MO says:

My sentiments exactly. I like Peterson, he has done great things for our pitching staff over the years. I think Hojo should be gone before Petersen. The Mets are not hitting, period. I hope the rumors are not true but I fear that they are.

As far as Willie goes, I think he needs to go. Not that he is mostly responsible for it all, I just do not think he is a good fit for this team.

  3. Church4prez says:

LOL F MANUEL. ALL HAIL BOBBY ZEN!!!

  4. shannon says:

Fly him out to California just to have him fired? Nice…

    • NYCESQ says:

I was writing the same thing, but then I realized I wasn’t logged in.

Why would they even do that? That’s absurd, and in poor taste. However, all things aside, nice knowin’ ya.

      • Mayflower says:

Poor taste? That’s being kind to this bungling bunch of clowns running the Mets. It’s downright despicable. I shudder to think what will happen to this franchise the day Fred totally entrusts it to Jeff. For all his bluster, at least Hank seems to be something of a straight arrow….this Jeff is a weasel of the first degree. They’ve made Willie a sympathetic figure (who does deserve better) and now emasculated Mr. Omar Autonomy. A true joke.

    • pac_manjones says:

I said this last night, why would they fly out Nieto and Peterson just to fire them? All the talk about Willie possibly being fired and not being around for tonights game, why would they fly them to Cali to fire them? Couldn’t they have met in the clubhouse after last nights game? This move is right down Omar’s alley.

      • 7-train says:

I believe the theory is that you do the firing when the team is on the West Coast because there are less media members around.

Its sucky, because imagine how bad that plane ride home by yourself is, but the team feels PR wise its easier. Then if the team can “get on a nice little roll” and come home with momentum the Press is eating out of the new manager’s hand.

In Politics this happens all the time too. John McCain releasing his medical records on Friday evening before Memorial Day is a recent example. Its less of a story because the big shot journos are on vacation and people aren’t really reading the political news on the holiday weekend.

      • miker94 says:

why the hell isn’t hojo the one being fired? of ALL the coaches, his particular forte happens to be suffering the most.

        • Really Carl Pavano says:

you have no clue how to send back a comment on a blog. your comment strikes at the very core of good comments. reconsider your comment

  5. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

    Jeez…

Well, great our problems are freekin solved. I just hope this works out as well as firing Rick Down did last year.

    Dumb move.

  6. JefJarrett says:

Look at the link….already reported as false…..but he remains in jeopardy….so we are exactly where we were before this thread, lol

  7. ness589 says:

This will solve nothing. Just like Rick Down. The only reason firing the staff in 99 worked was because Bobby V was a brilliant manager.

    • NadyFan says:

This is becoming Circus, again. They are the laughing stock in the NL. Omar and the Wilpons need to grow some balls. Either fire Willie and the coaching staff or anounce they will remain to finish the season and then get them some hitters who can actually hit!

    • cleonsvan says:

I beg to differ. Once of the big resutls of the 99 firing was hiring Dave Wallace, who was a huge imporvement over Apodaca and improved the starting staff as well as the bullpen.
That being said, I would make sure they hire Mazzone.

      • whenslydale says:

if the met coach’s get canned in Anaheim,
        they’ll always have Disneyland.

why did Bobby V hate Wallace so much?
        probably bad breath or something..

these guys practically live together on the road.

  8. shannon says:

    Baseball Prospectus:

UPDATE: The sources were both incorrect. My apologies for the error. I consistently got “no comments” from Mets sources and do believe that Peterson remains in jeopardy. However, that decision has not yet been made … or made public.

    • seanmcsean says:

      HA.. Exactly.

Thats some quality detective work there Baseball Prospectus.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, this made no sense. Getting ready to fire Peterson or not, you don’t put him on the plane for the west coast, only to fire him hours before the game and give him a ticket back….

  9. seanmcsean says:

I’ll believe it when I see it.. I bet these are the same chowderheads who reported that A-Rod to Boston was a done deal a few years back.

    • rock4989 says:

A-rod to Boston was a done deal, until the league reviewed the trade and said the financial part of it could not be done

      • seanmcsean says:

Like I said.. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Peterson is still wearing a Mets jacket, and A-Rod never put on a Sox uni.

It doesn’t matter why it never happened, it just didn’t happen period.

        • rock4989 says:

i understand “the believe when i see it” but you’re complaining about a report that was never true, the A-Rod trade was 100% true, just a few hiccups caused the trade to fall apart.

the two are completely different situations

  10. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

    so….this fixes what?

  11. Gina says:

Meh. I’m not a fan of the jacket but I can’t imagine firing the pitching coach in the middle of the season could be good for the pitching staff.

  12. pac_manjones says:

Take down the link/post Cerrone, I’m sure SNY doesn’t appreciate this false information on one of their network sites.

  13. whenslydale says:

    let’ me get this straight,
“unconfirmed reports tell us he’s definitely maybe been fired?

we see the difference between blogs and true reporting.

    I guess you can say;

    “BLOGS HAVE MORE FUN”

    • Ceetar says:

all “true reporters” will be reporting the same thing tomorrow, that Peterson may or may not be fired, is in hot water, etc. The difference is that blogs are where the information is, but if you don’t have a computer and wait a while, you can get the same information with all the details and reactions laid out for you.

  14. pac_manjones says:

“…i’m wondering if this means he will be fired…or, maybe it’ll be announced after the game…stay tuned, i guess…”

Matt – Are you kidding? How many instances do you remember where coaches were fired, yet allowed to manage a game afterwards? C’mon you’re better than that.

  15. bambergerrip says:

    classy

  16. Hellbelly says:

……are the Wilpons taking their “how to screw up a potentially great franchise” lesson from the Dolans?

There make me ashamed to be a Mets fan.

  17. garykeithron says:

lol, Loudmouths just said ‘the coaches will be on the bench for the first inning…no word yet on the 3rd inning”

    • MC Censor says:

its also filmed around 3 in the afternoon. carlin doesn’t work during dinner time.

for real though, carlins a good guy.

    • NadyFan says:

IN the mean time, there is a game tonight right? This is a joke and everyone around the NL is laughing at us, thank you Omar, than you Wilpon. As if last year wasn’t embarrasing enough.

      • MC Censor says:

I bet this is all being done to take attention away from the impending release of some wierd fetish Wilpon sex tape onto the internet.

  18. pac_manjones says:

Nice sneaky move Cerrone. Maybe you shouldn’t report “NEWS:BP REPORTS RICK PETERSON FIRED.” Instead try “RUMOR:BP REPORTS RICK PETERSON FIRED.” A least you’ll learn a little lesson to be careful from what you read from Will Carrol and Baseball Prospectus from now on.

  19. mistermet says:

I’m baaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaack- above was a diatribe I composed on Friday.

  20. jbinva says:

Nice Ozzie lyric. Do they ever play that at Shea? If not, they should.

  21. metsfan119 says:

If he is fired, can we ceremoniously burn his jacket at the next game at Shea? We could then bury the remains with a Victor Zambrano jersey.

  22. Flushing_is_Burning says:

this is like watching a soap opera, only the people are not very good looking, but much better actors.

    ugh! and THE DRAMA CONTINUES

  23. Mingo says:

Its confusing when you use the term “it’s official”

    • pac_manjones says:

and when he posts a blog post titled, “NEWS: BP RICK PETERSON FIRED.” Advice: Wait for REAL SOURCES to break news, baseball prosepectus, not being one of them.

  24. Hellbelly says:

    …….is Frank Cashin still alive?

The Wilpons wouldn’t pull this sort of crap if they had an adult as GM.

  25. Methtical says:

My uncle knows someone that works in the mets org. and said that randolph and peterson are gone this week. So i believe this information. Albeit, i believe HoJo should go first.

  26. neoncleon says:

Some of us oldtimers remember the REAL Mistermet, and you, sir, are not him. Without claiming that “this team is dead to me”, mentioning The Coupons, or using the word “dormant/dormancy” a couple of times, this pale missive does not carry the obsessive taint that permeated all of the real, true, Mistermet’s screeds.

    Thank you and goodnight.

And as an aside to Churf4Prez, you posted some major bull-hockey last nite about the Mets “brass” meeting before the team left for Cali to determine Willie’s fate. Total shiznit, man. You, sir, are a bounder and a cad.

    • pac_manjones says:

Yeah, I couldn’t believe how many people in the comments section believed him before they realize he didn’t have a source. That was quite pathetic, oh well, at least Church4Prez has been banned.

  27. mistermet says:

I was the orginal Mr. Met- changed my name to Mistermet when I got banned. For whatever reason, the ban has now been lifted. “Dormancy” was my word- as was “Coupons” and “this team is dead to me”…You people were loving Willie back then- how do you like him now? I’ve been proven correct. But then again I’ve wanted Willie gone since his first day on the job, when he forgot to double switch (and by the way, he still hasn’t figured out the double switch yet- he screwed that up yesterday). And why wasn’t Schneider pinch run for? It’s not like there are a shortage of catchers on the roster.

    • Really Carl Pavano says:

thats a foolish comment. coming from a player like myself i have to say im mad at you.

  28. mistermet says:

The idea that a struggling offensive team has to have 3 catchers on its rosters is one of the most absurd, most assinine things I’ve ever seen in my life- how many other teams in MLB have carried 3 catchers on their roster? What a waste of a roster spot- especially on a team that struggles to score runs.

  29. heart of the city says:

why would peterson be fired or in jeopardy the rotation out side of perez as been pretty solid this season so has the ball pen… if he should had been fired at any time it should have been last year.. hojo needs to be fired on site tho… and willie jus sucks as a manager …

  30. Really Carl Pavano says:

This type of thing scares us players.

Players like myself are scared of this.

  31. Really Carl Pavano says:

YOU CLOWNS LISTEN. THEY IS JUST WAITIN FOR THE TEAM TO WIN. ONCE THE METS WIN THEY WILL FIRE WILLIE AND STAFF. THIS WILL THROW THEM OFF AND ALSO THEY WONT BE AS TENSE.

    CARL PAVANO

  32. BeatWritersSuck says:

    PSYCHO

  33. pac_manjones says:

I agree with almost everything you’ve said up until you said lets go rangers this weekend? Dude are you on crack? We just played the rangers LAST WEEKEND, moron.

  34. No…..it can’t be……is this the one and only original mistermet??
weren’t you banned like last year??

  35. NadyFan says:

LOL. I also agree with everything you said above. This franchise is the laughing stock of the NL if not all of baseball. You are correct, the BIGGEST Collapse in the history of the sport and no one was held accountable, that’s unforgivable. This year is just a natural continuation of the way last season ended.
