Video: About Last Night, with Burkhardt
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 17, 2008 1:27 pm

In a recent appearance on this morning, Kevin Burkhardt had the following to say about the time line of last night’s events:

“After the game, everything was normal, Willie did his post-game presser like normal, the clubhouse was normal, and every one walked out like it was a normal day. So, we all kind of figured another day went and the Mets are playing well, they’ve played some spirited games, and maybe Willie is buying some time here.

“Turns out, two hours later, around 12:15 am PDT, Omar Minaya was in town, he did not go to the game, he was the hotel, and it turns out he was simply waiting back at the hotel like the Grim Reaper to give Willie the news. And when the guys got back he summoned them to a meeting in his room and told Willie Randolph, Rick Peterson and Tom Nieto that they were no longer employed by the New York Mets.”

According to Burkhardt, citing ‘some one who knew the details,’ the organization knew that this was going to happen on Monday morning, ‘but Willie and the coaching staff had no idea.’

By the way, will go live at 1 pm EDT today with coverage labeled, “The Mets in Transition,” featuring all sorts of guests, which will air up until the team’s press conference at 5 pm EDT.

poor kevin looks half asleep after staying up all night.

  2. Midtown says:

So HoJo keeps his job, despite the fact that we’re one of the most embarrassing offensive teams in baseball?

This organization sucks, top to bottom.

  3. StrawberryCoke says:

If I was Willie I would have stole some towels and mini shampoos on my way out. Oh also rented some movies. Take that Omar and Wilpons!

  4. nyleetch2 says:

it just amazes me that the organization actually planned this out. The way they did it, you’d think they just sort of did it on a whim at the last second. So poorly planned, so horribly strategized. What a mishandling of a move that should have come long ago.

  5. backinbusiness says:

Kevin did a good job there. Very upfront and honest and yet professional. Probably didn’t get him any points with the Mets but it should have. Listening to the part about “the guys had no idea” made my stomach turn.

  6. Wow. I can’t get over how tired Kevin is! Poor thing!

  7. Azman426 says:

Like I said, I do think Willie knew.
There is no way his daughter goes on Facebook to write ” I am no longer a Mets fan :) ” at around 7pm if she didn’t know something beforehand.

Its too coincidental for her to write that , as less than 10 hours later her father was fired.

Doesn’t anyone think that some of these players recieved this information in the middle of the night 12-1am and actually lost some sleep because of it? Which would lead me to believe that it would not be surprising to see the team sluggish tonight. I know if I found out my manager was fired, partly due to my performance, I would have a tough time sleeping well.

    • Horseman says:

I might have a tough time sleeping but, they are on the west coast. And they don’t play tonight until 10. The mets better not look sluggish. Hell I had to get up at 6:30 to get on work on time after staying up late to watch the game.

      • Jova1931 says:

        Same here brotha.
What I meant was that when something upsets me really badly it doesn’t allow me to sleep. I wake up every 30 mins or hour, etc. I can’t rest properly and I don’t know if the Mets players can/cannot either.

  9. metsfanatic says:

    OK Here’s the plan guys:
We wait until he starts winning. Then we pay for his airfare to California. Omar will stay in the hotel. Then Omar in a trenchcoat at 3am EST meets Willie in the hotel. He fires him. We haven’t lined up a real replacement. We promote the guys from AAA because whenever we have a problem that’s what we do. NY and the press have a big party because we are heroes

I’m lost on 1 thing. Why was doing it in a hotel room, as opposed to the stadium, so “brutal” to quote Kevin?

ANd midnight after a night game is probably a normal time for these guys to be doing stuff!
