For player reaction to yesterday’s events, including quotes from David Wright, Billy Wagner, Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, among others, check out David Lennon in Newsday and Bart Hubbach for the New York Post, as well as the Daily News.
To hear what the Phillies think, including quotes from Charlie Manuel, Brad Lidge, Jimmy Rollins and others, read Brian Costello’s report for the New York Post.
According to Wayne Coffey, in the Daily News, Willie Randolph’s personal friends are not very happy with how things went down yesterday.
In Newsday, media critic Neil Best claims that the media really ‘stoked the fire,’ with regards to how Randolph’s firing was covered.
…as i mentioned yesterday, i thought the perception of ‘outrage’ was a little out of control…i mean, you would have thought the actual reporters had been fired at midnight…it all came off as beyond personal…very weird…
…i think SNY did a great job with commentary, but even they were a bit overboard with the dramatic music that led in and out of every commercial…while watching it, you might have though the President had been assassinated…

I thought the same thing, I was watching a memorial for Tim Russet on NBC and their music was eerily similiar to that of “METS IN TRANSITION” lol. SNY really needs to stop all these tacky/cheap shows/programming/productions.
Lets see if this gets edited out???
It kind of reminds me of “FOX NFL:Sunday” With their ridiculous graphics, logos, transformers robots stomping all over the screen and corny “humor” segments.
First we had “Mets Inbetween games live,” then “Mets in transistion” tomorrow, “The funeral and burying of the 2008 Mets.”
Top Ten Ways the NY Mets can Turn Things Around
10. Less horse-play, more grab ass
9. Ask Tiger Woods to switch to baseball
8. Stop leaving games early to beat traffic
7. Convince superdelegates to put them in the playoffs
6. Ask President Bush how he was able to turn things around in Iraq
5. For starters, pay the poor bastards enough to live on
4. Jetpacks
3. Before every game, feed the other team tainted tomatos
2. Replace batting practice with frozen head of Ted Williams and dunk tank
1. Start fixing games like they do in the NBA
“you might have though the President had been assassinated…”
Or Tim Russert died.
Hey, Hey, Russert was a Journalisim Icon, Matt will tell you the same.
I work in that same industry that Russert did. I’m well aware.
Ah, sorry. Thought your original post was sarcasm, theres been a lot of that going around lately, it’s getting hard to distinguish.
“i thought the perception of ‘outrage’ was a little out of control…”
Totally agree, and I posted about this today…
My thinking exactly — the print media is throwing a fit because they couldn’t get the story in their morning papers. There’s nothing “disgraceful” or “cowardly” or “clumsy and bumbling” about firing a manager after a night game. The fact that he did it on the road was no great insult to Willie — if anything, it made things easier for him by letting him avoid some of the media glare.
Do the NY tabloids really think Omar is going to make the decision and then say “Oh, I can’t do this now, it’s 2:00 a.m. on the east coast?”
All the print outrage is so transparently self-serving, it’s far more “disgraceful” than the actual story they’re covering.
Yes, finally I get to hear what Jimmy Rollins has to say! Woohoo!
I’d like to hear what Chase Utley or Ryan Howard have to say. Please keep Rollins’s, Burrell’s, and Myers’s comments out of the NY media. They don’t deserve the print space.
Breaking news; President Randolph has been shot. Vice president Manuel will be assuming all duties. Also there might have been a second shooter as Governor Jacket was also shot. No one cares about Janitor Nieto.
HA!
Where the heck is Pagan and F. Mart?
Delgado needs to sit. I hope J.M. has the ability to make unpopular decisions, especially regarding his veterans. The Mutts will have a very long summer and fall if we are dependent on Delgado’s offense to get us over the hump.
Delgado will/would be a good 7th hitter when/if Alou and Church come back. That is also provided Alou doesn’t get hurt again. Possibly the single biggest “if” in the history of the world.
F-mart hurt again………..oh course he is! Been hurt every year.
We can’t expect to go very far if the 1st baseman is your #7 hitter, unless of course your #3,#4, #5, and #6 are all legitimately placed in the line up. I don’t think Beltran is truly a #4, and I know all of you think the same. Church should not be a #5 or #6, but, we are forced into this situation because an offensive position such as 1st base is manned by an overpaid meathead who can’t hit a fastball over 92 mph or a curveball. That is the problem here.
Way over blown, what was even worse was the fans on this blog over reacting, falling right into the medias trap.
C’mon not only did Willie fail as a manager but he disrespected this organization with his ‘racial’ comments.
Most overblown thing ever, but when the media is controlled by the generators of the story, they can do whatever they want, and make more money in the process!
now if I wanted to know something from J-Roll, I’d ask him where he came up with the idea to write his smash hit song “The Thong Song”…..I loved that one Jimmy, you were brilliant in it!
Wow he does look like that platinum hair wearing freak.lol
Man, I’m glad I found this site earlier this year and loved this post. Saves me from having to search the net and look for associated stories I might want to read. Matt did it all for me – lol.
I know this will be an unpopular opinion but I enjoyed SNY’s broadcast yesterday. I know it was a bit overdone and they
were repeating interviews to fill up space, but again, I got to hear all I was hoping to hear comments from all on one station in a several hour time span.
Just sign me ‘one obsessed, lazy-ass Met fan’.
I very much do not want to know what the Phillies think, thanks.
The press in the US is completely out of control, and are convinced that THEY are the story. Whether it is the psychos O’Reilly and Olbermann, or the complete set of pathological liars at Fox News, or the ESPN talking heads who are 100% focused on things like firings, steroids, etc, the press at this point are concerned with two things. One is their parent companies, who long ago ceased to have even a pretense of journalism or news—it is about ratings—ratings and nothing more. The higher the ratings, the higher the ad revenue, so controversy—no matter how fake and manufactured—is the coin of today’s “news” realm. Second, the reporters are all 100% convinced that they are the perfect, error-free, all-knowing arbiters of everything—-the reporters must be given what they want, how they want it, or they will scream like 6 year olds.
Forever, the press screamed and bellowed for Willie to go, and then they all act completely flabbergasted at how he was fired. “Fake indignation” it is, and a very sorry spectacle. The idea that even one of these jerks cares how Willie feels is comedy, and not very funny comedy at that.
They want ugly stories, and they will exaggerate and overblow anything to create ugly stories, with the completely ridiculous reaction to the Willie firing being exhibit A.
I cured myself of the illness of watching television news. It is time to do the same with ESPN, WFAN, and most of all the screaming idiots on SNY’s Loudmouths and other silly shows driven by yelping mediocrities, which exist for one reason only—to get us idiots to watch. The internet and independent press is full of real news—and now that the sports press has followed the “news” press into the sewer, I would imagine that sites just like Metsblog will continue to grow as a more reasonable way to follow teams than the National Enquirer-like constant sermon on steroids, Pac Man Jones, the Patriots’ cheating, money to NCAA athletes, etc, which ESPN has sadly become.
As I have said, 2009 could be bright, but last night shows what we have in store for the rest of the year. That little Reyes-Manual incident in inning 1 sure showed the respect “OG” Jerry commands from his team. What a sad, sorry joke 2008 is.
100% correct assessment……just like caffeine, sugar, artificial flavoring, etc., it’s designed to make us hooked, slower, dumber, and dependent……sad shiit
I agree about the news media focusing on the controversy. I watched the game last night (after a one hour nap of course) and was amazed at the Reyes/Manuel incident on-field. However, it was good to see Reyes cool off and stand with Manuel in the 4th inning and apologize (it seemed anyway). Sometimes you have to cool off. Reyes let his emotions get the best of him, but I think he realizes how important he is to the team and this was a good decision.
That being said, I wouldn’t have known that Reyes came back to the dugout if I didn’t watch the game and instead relied on ESPN as my source for Mets information. They showed the highlights of the game and began with Reyes storming off the field and not even once mentioning he would return and share a laugh with Manuel. It’s pretty disgraceful if you ask me. They left the “story” as Reyes upset with Manuel, when in fact it is pretty much squashed.
You point out SO perfectly what I was talking about—the point is to create and inflame a controversy—show Reyes angry, and probably show him throwing his helmet 10 times while some clown like Olney or Phillips is babbling, but then NEVER show the ultimate result, where Manuel talked to Reyes, Reyes apologized, etc.
News, truth, info, etc have absolutely zero to do with US news today, be it politics or sports. Sports news is just trying to fan a controversy to get more dumb, non-discerning viewers.
We need to move on. now that the leadership question has been answered, we can focus on some on the field issues.
I would like to know if Mike Carp is ready to take over 1B for Delgado. This cannot be answered while the kid is in Bingo.
When Ryan Church comes back, an OF of Nixon, Beltran, Church isn’t bad. When Alou comes back, we’ll be pretty strong.
Get a couple guys back, and wish carlos well, and I think we can move in a very positive direction
Let me commend you Matt on pointing out SNY’s exaggerated lead-in music, but they were guilty of “false outrage” too. I, like many other Mets fans are really down on how negatively they portray the Mets in comparison to the YES Network and the coverage of their home team. Some may say it’s because SNY doesn’t want to be partial, but I say what’s wrong with a team’s network to show some love and favoritism for the team that owns them and helps make a living for hundreds of the SNY employees? The things that made Bob Murphy, Ralph Kiner, Gary Cohen and Lindsay Nelson such icons in Mets history, is because they were homers and made no bones about it. I can’t think of one host or analyst on SNY who come off as someone who loves the Mets. All they do is sensationalize any negative thing they can find and wrap 30 minutes of dialog around it and call it cutting edge sports talk. It gets a little old and overbearing at times.
Matt,
Weren’t you one of the people saying you teery eyed and shaken up by the firing?
MSM weren’t the only ones overreacting.
The media is doing this because it sells. Plain and simple. The only thing that matters to them is advertising dollars.
Basically the media created, set up and executed this entire story to play out in a way that would be beneficial to selling copy/getting rating/increasing web hits.
The only way to change this behavior is to stop giving these idiots your attention when they behave like this. Of course this will never happen. It’s the same reason why half of you continue to tune into WFAN and listen to people that you hate and never agree with and yet they will be on the air forever.
In this day and age we can afford to be selective on our choices of sports coverage and news in general. If you do so you will greatly increase the quality of news as a whole.
Unfortunately Matt you also played right into the entire mess by covering each and every nuance day in and day out. It is obvious that you (as both a fan/blogger/budding media personality) were caught up in the media swarm through the entire soap opera.
Of course no class out of the comments from Charlie and Jimmy, not surprised Francona showed his respect, he is a class act and surprisingly, the same with Girardi last night.
listen, i am also trying to be optimistic, but how can i? who knows how the pitching is going to be now since peterson has gotten fired? schneider still cant hit a ball it it was on a tee. delgado swings at the ball when it reaches the catcher and he is not the best defensive first basemen. castillo is playing with two bum knees. reyes is still immature, and d-wright is still batting .270. beltran is starting to swing better but his numbers are still not that great, alou has yet to play more games than his jersey number, and the only good thing the whole year was church who took a big step back with the concussion and we have to wonder if that concussion will affect him. i mean, dont get me wrong i want to root for this team but it is really hard. the team is not ready to play. its hard to accept, but its the truth. ugh.
Just in case anybody wants to see my opinion on Delgado continuing to drain this lineup with his weak performance.
That is the problem here.
that is correct.
so let me get this straight. you’re a delgado supporter?
i think the team doctors should be fired for not supplying him with any HGH. that is “clear”-ly the answer. no pun intended.
wait, some writer wrote about how willie randolph’s friends thought willie randolph got a raw deal? for real?
matt, you don’t have to link to everything.
I’ve been a baseball player, coach, and fan all of my life. I’ve been a loyal fan to the Mets for over 30 years, but this team is really getting the best of me.
It is just plain sad. Booted routine ground balls in the infield and outfield. Terrible AB’s. Not covering second base, by a guy who is a career second baseman. NO EXCUSE ALLOWED, because there should never be one!
I hope the team can start turning it around, because as of now I have a hard time watching. The only players on this team who I respect, admire, and would keep are Wright, Santana, Maine, Church, Schnieder, and Wagner. I do respect Beltran, but have never understood his lack luster attitude. Reyes is just overrated, and there are several better shortstops in the NL.
The others I won’t even comment on. Enough is said on this site about how much they suck. As for the earlier comments on Delgado…you forgot to mention how he swings at terrible pitches that are inside, low and in the dirt.
I sure did have high hopes this year. I even had high hopes at game time last night, but couldn’t even maintain that through the first inning.
Yesterday Matt put something up on the site momentarily about can explain your feelings in one word. Well here goes…”SAD”
Beltran doesn’t have a lack-luster attitude. It’s just his personality. He isn’t as warm and friendly as a guy like Wright. But he isn’t a jerk. I truly believe he cares about winning. He just doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve.
I agree with your assesment of Beltran. I probably should have worded my comment differently and said he comes across with a lack luster attitude. Don’t get me wrong, as I mentioned above I really do respect him. There is no doubt he is very talented. However, if it was my choice though, I don’t think I would build my team around him. Not without several other players already on the team who have leadership skills and do show heart. Then Beltran probably would probably perform very well and not be under so much scrutiny.
With the current Mets team I think there is an expectation of him that may be too much.
i know – that was weird that he posted it briefly and took it down. maybe everyone was trying to post curse words
They should have reporters take IQ tests. did the guy for the post really ask the Phillies if they felt bad for the collapse last year? What an idiot!
what was this about an email? did omar send an email to the team or to media?
Anyone notice that amidst all the “breaking” coverage of a story more than 12 hours old, they could not find a slot for the only relevant baseball show on the station, Playing for Peanuts? Pre-empted on Sunday and Tuesday. We had Loudmouths, Wheelhouse, Mets in tranistion (with everyone from Loudmouths and Wheelhouse). Lost to viewers was the story of the man who should be managing these Mets now that Willie is gone, Wally Backman. Google “Wally Backman Petition” and let them know you want a real NY Met at the helm.
At least I feel somewhat vindicated for being one of the few posters yesterday that thought the whole “classless circus” nonsense yesterday was way overblown melodrama. And it was driven by th emedia, because they were POd that everything wasn’t done based on their wishes.
gary cohen sounded almost suicidal after that first inning last night. i was at the ‘86 parade when i was 8 years old, but i have not gone to a game this year and don’t plan on it. caring about this team is a waste of time.

The Mets have no class. I’m becoming a Padres fan in July.
I think Trot Nixon just specifcally asked to be traded BACK to the Tuscon Sidewinders
