Note: Jerry Manuel is a Gangsta
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 19, 2008 1:24 am

Jerry Manuel, with a smile, speaking to reporters prior to Wednesday’s game, regarding what he told Jose Reyes in the locker room on Tuesday after the shortstop stormed off the field and tossed his helmet in disgust of being pulled from the game with a possible injury:

“I told him the next time he does that, I’m going to get my blade out and cut him, right on the field.  Hey, I’m a gangsta now.  You go gangsta on me, I’m gonna have to get you now.”

i don’t know whether to laugh at this, or be afraid…

…apparently, jerry refers to himself and his players as gangstas

In fact, during Manuel’s introductory press conference on Tuesday, he told reporters that he often uses the expression, “Gangstas on the field, ladies on the bus.”

Manuel, on his relationship with the players, and whether his confrontation with Reyes allowed him to how his team who his boss, while speaking to reporters prior to Wednesday’s game:

“Once you step into an authoritative position, you’ve got to be an authority.  That’s the bottom line, and that has to be accepted.  I’m not here to make friends, or for people to like me, or for people to say this or that about me, I’m here to run the club in the best way that I think is possible.”

In a post to Hot Foot, Anthony De Rosa has created the perfect movie posted to honor ‘the new boss.’

Haha, I don’t get the whole gangstas thing, but I love it.

Also, I know I posted this earlier, but I’m trying to gauge some interest, here goes:

I know this is a little off-topic, but I bought a huge lot of 100 tix to the Mets Rockies Sunday night game on July 13th- the last game before the All-Star Break. Game will be on ESPN Sunday Night- this should be more reason to go as you will not have to listen to Morgan and Miller announcing the game if you’re there live.

Anyways, I got the seats in the bleachers, the bleacher tickets run for 42 bucks face value (can you believe that?!?!). I want to sell them at face, I’m not trying to make a profit, I just wanna see a game in the bleachers at Shea with some like-minded Mets fans, so I figured I’d extend an open invite to any Metsbloggers to grab a ticket or four at face value for this game. I figure I’ll get there real early, tailgate all afternoon, then go in at around 4-5 for BP, catch a few homers in the stands before the game, then see a Sunday night game in the bleachers at Shea. If you’d be interested, e-mail me at

  2. dontstopbelieving says:

So can we change the postgame win music at Shea to “Gangsta’s Paradise?” Or, alternatively, “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta?” (which, naturally, I only know about from Office Space).

    • domosnacks5 says:

      American Gangster- Jay-Z?

I think we, as fans, should just start the old Jerry Springer “JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY!” chants everytime he steps out of the dugout.

Would be way better than the booing we used to do everytime the old manager (I refuse to say his name), would step out of the dugout.

      • Ceetar says:

So the bunch of you that were classless fans then suddenly realize it and want to be supportive? I don’t believe it.

There is nothing Manuel did today that Willie wouldn’t have done. they’d be in the same place in the standings with or without the firing.

        • KingWright says:

What you can’t see the in the clubhouse is what changed attitudes, not strategies during the game. Positive attitude sparks momentum.

        • gipper82475 says:

Some are deserving of support; others weren’t. This isn’t rocket science.

        • Ceetar says:

ha. Manuel was just as much a part of the past failures and collapse as Willie was.

The team itself hasn’t changed, so I don’t see why you wouldn’t suddenly believe when you haven’t before. They play the same way, and they’ve won five of seven, most of which were before Manuel showed up with his ‘changed attitude’.

        • mr.gee21 says:

          Willie wasn’t gangsta’. That’s the difference…

        • jamie says:

gipper, don’t you mean rocket surgery?

        • anditsouttahere says:

1st – well played with the rocket surgery.

2nd – Manuel is not just as much to blame for past failures. He was the bench coach. It is clear from the way he is speaking that this is something hes been itching to do. As a bench coach, your muted and your opinion becomes secondary. Im sure there were pleanty of times where Manuel felt and believed very strongly that he could be doing a better job then the past coach but was in position to call things out. Now that he has the reigns its a different story. Theres soemthing different about the view of the dugout yesterday. It felt like there was actually a manager present and not a statue.

    • ToastyJoe says:

I LOVE this idea, and I vote for “Doesn’t it feel good to be a gangsta.” And they can show the guys smashing up the fax machine on the diamond vision.

  3. Kugaa says:

Reyes showed fire when he got out of the game yesterday…that’s what they needed to get it together.

    • Midtown says:

Yeah, the Mets need more players to throw hissy fits when they’re removed from the game. Why couldn’t they figure this out earlier?

      Give me a break.

      • DaN22CaP says:

        if fired jose up obviously

        • Midtown says:

It didn’t fire anybody up. I love when people make random connections between things that are absolutely unrelated.

Maybe it’s the fact that Reyes has been swinging the bat well for ABOUT A MONTH NOW.

Or maybe it’s just that he acted like a baby the day before.

          Which is more logical?

        • Danny says:

Reyes has been hot for almost 2 months.

He’s crushing guys like Rollins and Jeter in production this year, but many Mets fans still aren’t satisfied.

        • Gina says:

Yeah I don’t understand what else they could want him to do. He’s on pace to pass most of his 06 numbers, yet there are still people on here saying he should be traded.

      • Kugaa says:

Hissy fits are emotions..that is what they needed…2007Mets=2008 Phillies they choke.

  4. ravi3 says:

7.5 down to 5.5 … If the Mets can get some wins together, that 4 game set in Philly during the July 4th weekend is going to be huge.

    • KingWright says:

This cannot be stressed enough. This is the time for a surge.

      • Ceetar says:

Well…duh? As I’ve been saying, it’s way too early to panic. The goal for June is and was to put themselves in position to at least be able to take the division with a sweep of the Phillies in early July.

They’re not that good, and this 4-6 last 10 for the Phillies is not surprising. Now they’re facing an Angel team that’s likely to bounce back from losing a series.

    • There's Always '09 says:

Yea…as much as I hate that place, I just might have to make a trip down.

  5. Midtown says:

I like Manuel more and more every day.

  6. Prismo says:

    Gangstas on the field,
    Ladies on the bus!

    • That should be the new phrase for Metsblog T-shirts!

      • Mookie1986 says:

        On the mark, bro!

        I so want a t-shirt of this!

But it’s gotta be simple and well designed. Hell, I may just make one for myself. That phrase is just begging to be placed on a t-shirt!

  7. dykstraw II says:

    GANGSTAS ON THE FIELD
    LADIES ON THE BLOG

    does cerrone ever sleep?

    • ravi3 says:

I’m actually surprised that nobody has accused Jerry of being sexist after that statement….Though considering what his successor in Chicago did with that blowup doll, this is tame.

  8. VladCruz says:

Shea Stay Gangstas. I have a good feeling about this. I think the players felt really tied down with Willie and Manuel is a little bit more liberal.

  9. AlreadyMissShea says:

The media has been very unfair to our team. Right down to trying to convince people about a firing that happened at 3:14am, as opposed to 12:14am local time which is a huge difference. If you have listened to any talk radio or read any papers, there are people who are not Mets fans who believe that Willie was fired in the middle of the night. It’s the Mets vs. the World now. Everyone wants them to lose. We need to support them now, more than ever. I no longer care about how it was done, I’m just glad that the Wilpons and Omar took out the trash this week. Now our team has a chance to reach its true potential.

    • Ceetar says:

The media is a joke. The middle of the night thing only refers to them, not to Willie. Of course the whole flying him out there and firing him after a win in early june…

I wish the Wilpons and Omar _had_ ‘taken out the trash’ as you say, but they made a lateral non-move and hope it’ll look good when this already good team figures out it’s good and wins.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

I admit I did feel bad about how the firing was handled, but only for a moment. Then I remembered that the former manager used the same media to launch a verbal assualt against our team’s own network, as well as against every fan who was there before he arrived (and not hiding as he claimed)… Not to mention the whole racial thing which was based on absolutely nothing. Well he sure didn’t mind humiliating everyone else to make himself look good and further his own agenda.

Make no mistake about it. They waited a little bit too long, but they did in fact take out the trash. If this team never wins another game after tonight, which I know will not be the case, they finally do have something they haven’t had for years. Leadership. I firmly believe they are going to respond in a way that will make us all very glad that what’s done is done.

        • Ceetar says:

hahaha. It’s so funny to see you so delusional. Jerry Manuel is not leadership.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I am not delusional you idiot. Randolph was a piece of garbage. My grandmother would be leadership in the wake of the disgrace that was already there. Manuel would not be my first choice, but he is my first choice among what we just had and what we have now.

        • TenTonHammer says:

Nobody agrees with you that Randolph is a piece of garbage. Maybe he wasn’t a great manager, but don’t make yourself look stupid by judging his character through a TV screen.

And for a Mets fan to be criticizing Randolph’s opinions on race is laughable. 80% of Metsblog is VERY very free to bust out the latino “jokes” when the team is losing.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well you’ll just have to excuse me if I think a guy who plays the race card and says Mets fans were in hiding before he showed up is garbage. It’s my opinion, and I’m not the only one who feels that way. Maybe I’m one of the few people here who has the courage to say it. I don’t know where you live, but on the streets of New York there are a lot of people today who are saying the same thing I am. There are also some columns in the papers that take that point of view, but they will never be referenced on this blog.

And finally, if you are going to continue to support this person after he is gone, I will have to call into question whether or not you are even a fan of this team.

        • patrick says:

nice try on the in hiding, but any met fan with a sense of intellectual honesty fully admits that before the 2005 season, the Met fan was drifting toward paper bags on the head, and enough of the “race card” it gets played by half the moronic fanbase every time the Mets lose and Carlos Beltran or Carlos Delgado do not hit a homerun

        • pac_manjones says:

Patrick, it’s time for you to move on. I thought I told you to get back over to the Yankees blog and learn your time zones. The reason you chimed in on this post was because you were one of those commenters the other day saying the mets fired Willie Randolph at “3AM IN CALIFORNIA” meaning, they fired him at 6am EST. It’s not too expensive for a young female to get an education these days, so why don’t you apply for some financial aid and get to studying? Jerry Manuel told ya to get on the bus girl!

        • Are AARP and Social Security jokes OK?

        • patrick says:

pmj, nothing shows rising intellect more than a sexist moron who selects a criminal as their screen name, well done, I and the hordes of Mets fans are so proud to have a primate like you in our midst.

You continue to harp harp harp on the wrong note, but go ahead and play your out of tune fiddle, sadly your ego is just a screen name that is likely a cheeto munching pile of zits.

        • cleonsvan says:

boys and girls come on now. Its time to put this BS aside and support the team. Enough with the negativity. Let’s give the gansta a chance here at least before we start throwing him under the ladies bus and calling him the same as Willie. Attitude is everything in this game. As Yogi once said “Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical.”

        • dykstraw II says:

who is this willie you all speak of?

          TURN THE PAGE GANGSTAS

  10. AlreadyMissShea says:

And on that note, I will no longer be reading or posting on this blog. I fully believe the New York Mets are going to turn the corner and for the first time this year I see them as a playoff team in the making. I really don’t need to argue with people on a blog anymore. I can just enjoy the wins as they come. There are some very good people posting here, and it has been a pleasure talking to them. I am happily moving on. Enjoy the rest of the season.

    • Prismo says:

I agree mostly with your side of the “debate” up there.

But if you can’t handle other people’s opinions, I’m glad you’re leaving.

I disagree with a lot of what’s said here too, but I ignore what I don’t like. It’s better than fanning the flames, so to speak.

    • patrick says:

you’ll be back under another stupid screenname

    • NCMetsGuy says:

I should give you the same advice that you gave thereal guy but maybe a break would do you some good as well.

  11. Metshead1974 says:

Don’t drink the kool-aid folks. Manuel has been here since the collapse started. All of his retoric with the media doesn’t fool me. Win 20 of the 30 first, and then maybe I want to hear about “gangstas”.

    • patrick says:

      very well said Metshead1974

A lot of the “dreamers” here want to play fairly tale imagination land in just sheer ecstasy that Randolph is gone.

Fine Randolph is gone, who the hell cares, the players are the exact same group who had a 7 game lead with 17 games to play last year and the same players who routinely mailed it in this year.

I think it was awfully risky to give the reigns to someone who had been sitting right next to the manager all that time, and it is a big catch 22, the best I think we can expect is the uncomfortable aura of trying to save the former managers job will lighten up this team, but that does not answer the larger question, changing the overall approach.

Thus far we have two games to view, one prototypical dud, and one semi nice win, in which a lot of the same old same old happened. Reyes scores 60% of the runs, Perez has a three run lead, coughs it up in the 5th, you have to sit and hope the none pen holds it once, because by the way, Oliver Perez 104 pitches and done.

So congratulations to Manuel, he is a nice guy, but thus far we have seen nothing to get excited about.

In fact, I will say this, go pound the hell out of a miserable team in Colorado, then we can start even considering t-shirts, new songs and high fives, let alone where the Mets are in the standings.

I’ll get optimistic about Manuel when I actually witness a series of different changes, moves and actions that result in wins.

      • Mookie1986 says:

        I aint drinkin no kool-aid.

All I want is a t-shirt. Is that so wrong? :(

        • patrick says:

that is a funny looking t-shirt for a 1-1 guy and a team still below .500

this is all typical met fandom, jump to the conclusions before ANYTHING has happened.

play the games, get somewhere and then lets get excited.

        • theperfectgame says:

Whether or not you think this team has turned the corner, it’s a funny phrase, and if that motivates some people to stop being so negative, then where’s the harm? I’m all for (almost) anything that helps people enjoy watching this team again. For a franchise that has been TERRIBLE at marketing, maybe they accidentally stumbled in the right direction with this.

        • patrick says:

I dont want them to Market anything but victories, call me crazy, but I am sick of the slogans, stupid pet tricks and all else.

        • anditsouttahere says:

i could be wrong but if JOBA can have tshirts in Modells than Jerry Manuel can get a tshirt.

        • Berbalerbs says:

I think the T-Shirt people are showing something known in other regions of the country as “fandom.”

I realize it’s too early to proclaim Jerry Manuel the cureall of the 2008 Mets, but did you REALLY enjoy the miserable feeling that’s been around since last September so much that you need to hold onto it???

Try being excited about baseball for a little while. I’ve read it’s a zesty enterprise.

        • dykstraw II says:

i’m seeing way too many busladies and not enough fieldgangstas

  12. NY Cuban says:

    JER-RY JER-RY!!!! I love this guy.

  13. Metsology says:

Gangster? Lets get serious people…its time to FIRE OMAR. Now.

    • mr.gee21 says:

What? Heck no, not while we are on a nice little roll!

    • cleonsvan says:

settle down with the firing BS already. Hold it until the year is over. Let’ see what this team can do. Until then try to enjoy the team, life and be hopeful for a change

  14. With all the BS the last few weeks/months, how about we all just have some fun for a bit. Lets save the craziness for later in the season, if they are truly out of it.

Willie is gone, lets see if the team can turn the page and get it going. Maybe we can enjoy the ride for a while

    • We can’t have fun, because if we do the Negative Nancies will come along and spoil it…So it’s best just to use sarcasm.

      • theperfectgame says:

Being positive and being sarcastic don’t have to be mutually exclusive. But yes, in general it would be nice if people lightened up a bit.

  15. jamie says:

This makes the picture on teh back page of today’s Post even funnier…if you haven’t seen it, check it out with this thread in mind.

  16. DontShakeAlousHand says:

patrick your annoying and corny. I can’t stand mets fans who are just constantly negative and are always looking for something to complain about . Just bc manuel was around for the collapse doesn’t mean he cant turn things around. There’s a big difference between a bench coach who gives an opinion which the manager can choose to ignore, and a manager who has full decision making authority. I don’t know why I’m even acknowledging u when u won’t be able to read this until u get back from school at 3:30, btw u forgot ur lunch in the refrigerator, mommy is dropping it off at the school later.

  17. Dirtysanchez says:

Manuel is a true gangsta..stabbed willie in da back per the nypost.

    • NYMBosco says:

      poem to willie……

willie, willie willlie where have you gone?
it’s sad that you are in the dugout no more, darn

you were the manager now you are unemployed
you should never have pinch hit with Cliff Floyd!

now your friend jerry has taken your place
and he has put it in your face

Jeffy, Freddy and Omar did not appreciate you
now go back to the yankees to see what you can do

  18. cleonsvan says:

I like Manuel attitude and I love the “gangsta” thing. I always thought
that after 2006 this team needed to loosen up a little. Maybe Willie’s button-down, conservative, Yankee-like approach made this team too uptight. They need to cut loose and let it hang out. Just look at Boston after Nomar left in 2004. Let’s go Gangstas- time to boogie down.

  19. mookstra says:

Williw seemed like a good dude, but proved to be WAY too sensitive, and obviously really paranoid with all of his conspiracy theories. Maunuels demeanor and charisma has been the perfect remedy from Willie’s stubborness and personalityless post game interviews

    • dykstraw II says:

i’m loving how willie is talking himself out of his next job. what a moron!

      • There's Always '09 says:

Willie deserves a job. We’ve seen in the past that spending money doesn’t guarantee wins. His record (the 2nd best winning % in Mets history) is definitely a testament to him, not the fact that ownership spent money.

He got nothing out of Pedro. One big year from Beltran. Wright and Reyes emerged under him. But most of all, he brought a winning attitude to Queens. As Mets fans, I think we should be grateful and not bash the man. But to each their own.

        • dykstraw II says:

he bashed me and called me a fairweather fan (and possibly racist). and he is sitting home crying to the media about everyone who betrayed him, while wearing his negro leagues shirt which i am sure is a complete coincidence. so i think this is well deserved.

        • mookstra says:

I think Willie deserves another job too and will probably do much better in a smaller market where he won’t have to deal with the media, which was obviously something he could not handle here. As far as the third best winning percentage in mets history, while it may be technically true, he had one year that he finished 32 games over, so those #’s are a bit skewed. He did a good job changing the culture in his honeymoon year of 05, but they also replaced al leiter with pedro, got rid of john franco, brought in the best FA on the market in Beltran. He had minimal expectations that year wnd we would have been happy to be close to 500, let alone above. they came into 07 with huge expectations and eventually collapsed, and he would have been 500 this year if he finished the year. Agan, i’m not saying he was a bad man, but his time ran out here and the team needed a new voice. Manuel might be part of that regime, but at least now he’s in charge and can speak his mind, I’m sure he is a lot at fault for the collapse and the mediocrity this year, but i’m sure we have all hadd jobs where we disagreed with our bosses on a lot of thier managerial aspects and the way they ran things but were forced to bite our lips because we had to know what our role was.

  20. Bruce Boisclair says:

Matt, are those sunglasses supposed to represent the gangsta look, or a replica of Jerry’s glasses?

You need to find a nice image of Jerry’s glasses to put up there when you speak about him. Alternatively, when you do the gangsta thing, put a fedora up there (I read somewhere that when Jerry managed one of the squads in an intrasquad game, he named them the gangstas and borrowed a fedora from Carlos Beltran….)

  21. It’s not about the salary, it’s all about reality. Is Jerry the leader of MWA?
