Stat: David Wright and K-Rod’s Curve Ball
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 19, 2008 2:52 pm

Last night, with two outs and the Mets down one run in the ninth inning, and the tying run on second base, David Wright ripped a single to left-center to push the game in to extra innings.

…wright remained patient, and hit what was a nasty curve ball from Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez

According to ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Wright is the second batter all season to get a hit against Rodriguez’s curve ball.

Also, Baseball Tonight points out that Wright had been just 1 for 20 in ninth-inning at bats this year prior to last night’s game.

Wow, just one hit on his curve. That’s amazin’ I honestly thought we didn’t have a shot once K-rod came in.

    • He’s on my fantasy team :o but once Reyes got to 2nd, i knew it was time…

    • nrmax88 says:

Wasn’t Reyes’ hit also on a curveball?

    • nrmax88 says:

Wasn’t Reyes’ hit on a curveball too? Besides, unless it was Tim K(which it would have been), I dont trust any stat baseball tonight gives you. A bunch of ignorant ex players (Kruk, Perez) doesnt’ mean much to me.

Was it the extra BP from Manuel that go this done?

    • Gasface77 says:

No, he wants them to “hit less.” No extra BP!

On a side note, I just watched Joba walk of the mound to a standing ovation at yankee stadium…..after throwing all of 5 innings!

there were a couple of shots last night in which D looked sooo exhausted, though his play certainly didn’t reflect it. But that hit made me jump off the couch, and as I said in another thread, I almost felt like we’d won teh world series. I love it when baseball is fun.

I have to say, I was one who wanted willie to stay through the year, then if teh ship went down, they’d all go down together…but it was really great to have the game be about baseball, rather than willie. We’ll see how the rest goes, but last night was awesome.

It was awesome last night. Whether or not you wanted Willie gone, I think we can all agree on that positive. No matter what, from here on out, the talk will be surrounding the players, not Jerry Manuel. I’m a firm believer that coaches have much less influence on results than the media/fans tend to think, but if there’s a damn Willie Watch every day it must get into players heads.

From this point on, baseball and nothing but. We’ve still got plenty of ball to go and the gap is closing between the Phillies and the Mets. It’s time to take the division crown back and shove it up their Philthy Asses.

    Gotta Believe! a great game.

hey, remember that time Willie didn’t even have our boys take batting practice before a game. so glad those days are over, eventhough i think a lot of it was on the players. hopefully we can all move forward and focus back on baseball…and winning baseball at that!

    LES GO

I thought it was a slider; didn’t know he had a curve.

    • sheaheykid says:

agreed I always thought he threw a slider and a cutter – albeit that assumption is based on MLB 2004!! haha

      • BIG17EASY says:

It is a slider. But some guys, like K-Rod, have such a sharp slider with more downward break that it looks a lot like a curveball. Pretty tough to tell the difference a lot of the time.

Last nights game was great! Dave is the man!

I knew he would come back when we needed him most. Dave is a very smart and talented player. Everyone goes through a slump, and I knew he would work through it with the dedication and determination that makes him who he is. Lets hope that he keeps moving upward. However, batting average is not everything. His RBI total is pretty good! I would rather see a lower batting average and a higher RBI count, but Dave is a power hitter so I know he can have both!

As I have said here before, Dave is someone who I look up to. His passion for what he does, his respect for the game and his determination not to fail all add up to a hero in my book. When I see people like him, they inspire me to do my work. As an audio engineer, I have had the chance to work with many celebrities, but if I could meet anyone it would be David Wright. It would be an honor to shake his hand.

    LETS GO METS!

.050 in the ninth prior to that AB, eh? Pressing much, David?

  8. LGNYM says:

It was great to see him finally get a hit like that. Off one of the best in the business no less.

It would be really nice if this finally gets him out of the slump

  9. chew13 says:

The clutch hit was great but after re-watching the game, even more impressive was his defense. He made some great plays. He seemed really focused in the field.

  10. domosnacks5 says:

only 2 hits off his curveball all year, ridiculous.

Should we go after him in the offseason? (K-Rod that is)

  11. metsftw says:

Except that K-Rod throws a slider, not a curveball. But whatever.

  12. Ah so you feel it too? :D

  13. OrangEandBlue says:

The Mets have to play with the men on the field now. No more relying on Alou because he is just a shot of energy that ends up crashing. However, get well Churchie. We need you.
