Links: Mexisms, Respect, Stayin’ Alive, Pitcher

by Mike Nichols on June 20th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Brooklyn Met Fan is proud to present his newest feature, “The Mexism of the Day.”

…my favorite mexism so far is Keith telling the story of his time running out in to a tornado…classic stuff…

Will Sommer of Mets Fans Forever lists three reasons why the Mets have more respect for Jerry Manuel than they had for Willie Randolph.

Speaking of lists, Newsday‘s David Lennon lists five ways for the Mets to stay alive this season.

Over at Hot Foot, Gary Grund, posts hilarious video of a cat and mouse situation between Pat Venditte, who is an ambidextrous pitcher for the Staten Island Yankees, and Ralph Henriquez of the Brooklyn Cyclones during last night’s game.

Read: Managing Reyes

by Mike Nichols on June 20th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Billy Witz of the New York Times, writes an excellent piece on the Jerry Manuel‘s difficult task of managing Jose Reyes.

Manuel’s approach with Reyes is much different than one Willie Randolph took, writes Witz…

“In the end, the somewhat restrained Randolph got along with Reyes but never seemed able to establish a special bond.

Manuel’s approach to Reyes already appears to be more personal and contemporary than Randolph’s. It may be the difference between formal and familiar — or, in Reyes’s native tongue, tú and usted. When Randolph did criticize Reyes last season, he paused in his remarks, choosing his words cautiously. Manuel seems to have no such filter.”

…managing reyes has always seemingly been a seperate entity from managing the Mets…it’s not because he has the superstar ego, but different because reyes wears his emotions on his sleve at all times, as evident by is immature tirade on Tuesday night…

…as witz points out, many still point to a benching in july of last season as the turning point in the reyes/randolph relationship, as reyes went in the tank inthe months following, but perhaps with manuel taking a different tact, reyes will again flourish under the guidance of his new manager….

Read: Hope Is All We Have Left

by Mike Nichols on June 20th, 2008 at 10:05 am

In his latest column for the New York Post, Mike Vaccaro that despite their comeback win on Thursday against the Angels, the Mets still have a lot of hard work ahead of them.

Vaccaro writes…

“For all the good things the Mets awaken to this morning, there is still this ultra-sobering fact: They are still a game under .500. There are still two teams to leapfrog in the division, and three in the wild-card standings…There is still baseball, and a baseball season, left for the Mets, and their wounded fan base, to care about if they so desire. Time may be the best healer of all wounds. But hope isn’t such a bad option, either.”

…as Janish wrote yesterday on MetsBlog, the odds are stacked against the Mets this season, but clearly the underdog role is a position most of us as Mets fans are comfortable with…

…i mean, it’s nice to hear the pundits pick the Mets to be the favorite to win the national league, but those predictions also make me a bit unformtable…this franchise was built on hope and if hope is all we have, so be it…hope is what makes me a Mets fan…

…ya gotta believe…

Read: Five Ways to Succeed

by Regis Courtemanche on June 20th, 2008 at 7:44 am

In an article for Newsday, David Lennon lists five things the Mets need to do to salvage their season, including, “Connect With Clubhouse,” of which he writes:

“Manuel already has relationships in the clubhouse, but this is a player-controlled team now, with little respect for authority. Manuel is off to a good start by forcing David Wright to DH and pulling Jose Reyes. But staying on top of others such as Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado – two of the team’s biggest underachievers – is going to take work.”

…i think this team needs to refresh their mindset and play the season like it has just begun…put the past behind them and stop looking ahead, play to win every game like it’s their last…

Read: Willie on Firing

by Regis Courtemanche on June 20th, 2008 at 7:29 am

In today’s Daily News, Willie Randolph relays exactly how the firing went down, and his feelings on how it was handled.

Randolph on the moment he was fired:

“He said it was time to make some changes, and I waited for him to talk about whacking Rick and Tommy, but he just kept talking about how the team was better than it was playing, about all the stories that were out there and the cloud hovering over the team.”

“As Omar went on this weird chill started to course through by body. I could feel myself going cold. Suddenly, it occurred to me that maybe he was talking about me. Maybe I was the one about to get whacked.”

“Omar, are you firing me?” I asked. He looked away for a minute and then met my eyes. “Yeah, I’m going to make a move,” he said. “It’s a hard decision, but I have to make it.”

…wow, this seems like an episode of the sopranos…rarely do you get this type of insight into a managerial firing and i applaud willie for being so courageous…i wish him the best and he’s sure to land on his feet somewhere in the baseball world soon…

…what amuses me about this situation is how the fickle media was so anti-willie before the firing, and now look at him as somewhat of a martyr…i feel like they’re always looking for someone to blame and i think omar will be the next to feel the pressure…
