The Mets (37–37) defeated the Rockies (32–44) by the score of 3 to 1 in Colorado this afternoon.
The Mets now trail the Phillies by just two losses for first place in the National League East.

However, in case you missed it, know that Jose Reyes started the game with a triple, and eventually scored; Mike Pelfrey did not allow a run in 5.2 innings of work, was aggressive and ahead of the count all day, while continuing to look like a more mature, totally-different pitcher than the guy we watched earlier in the season; Carlos Beltran clobbered a two-run, second-deck home run; and, lastly, Duaner Sanchez (the set-up man) and Billy Wagner each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to close out the game.
The Mets return to Shea Stadium to take on the Mariners tomorrow, starting at 7:10 pm, with Johan Santana (7-5, 3.04 ERA) facing Felix Hernandez (6-5, 2.87 ERA).

When asked if there is any player in the majors that reminds him of himself, Keith replied; “No, I haven’t really thought about comparing someone to myself.”

The injury occurred when Todd Helton fouled a pitch off of Schneider’s finger in the first inning. By the way, this is the same finger that kept Schneider out of the lineup for nearly two weeks in April.
Jerry Manuel on Schneider’s toughness:
“He got beat up tonight, man. He could have been in there with [Mike] Tyson tonight.”
…is it me or does it always seem like two steps forward and two steps back with this team…
…speaking of mike tyson, now king hippo will get the majority of the starts at catcher…sorry, i couldn’t resist…get better soon brian…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche |Pedro Martinez allowed just two hits through the first four innings but then got lit up for six runs in the fifth.
Jerry Manuel on Pedro’s performance:
“Man, I’ll tell you he was cruising. He was probably the best that we had seen at this point. But he’s just at that point of his career where a little mistake here and a little mistake there maybe cost him.”
Martinez, regarding his outing:
“I’m paid to do one thing here. And I tried to do it today, and I didn’t do it very well. The pitches that they hit were the pitches I wanted to throw, there is no whining. You just have to give them credit and hope for another chance.”
…it was as if pedro just couldn’t close the door on what could have been a great outing…let it go, move on, and get ‘em next time petey…
Tagged Pedro Martinez, Regis Courtemanche |The Mets (36-37) lost to the Rockies (32-43) by a score of 7 to 1 tonight in Denver tonight.
For a complete recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.
However, in case you missed it, know that:
- Pedro Martinez cruised through the first four innings, but couldn’t get through the fifth as the Rockies caught up to him, scoring six runs, including back-to-back homeruns on consecutive pitches to begin the inning. I’m not sure if Pedro’s early success tonight was helped by the shadows on the field that disappeared after fourth inning or not, but up until the fifth Pedro was masterful.
- Jose Reyes lead off the game with his National League leading seventh triple and later scored the Mets loan run on a Luis Castillo sac fly. After scoring the run, Reyes needed oxygen to recover. I’ve never seen a supply oxygen avaiable in team’s dugout before, but with the thin air in Denver it’s to be expected.
- Other than Reyes’ triple, the Mets managed only one other hit off Ubaldo Jimenez in the first eight innings, further solidifying the legend of lack of production versus pitchers making their first start against them.
- Endy Chavez, who doubled-off the pitcher on a line drive in the third, is as slick as come in the outfield and would most certainly win a Gold Glove if he was an everyday player.
- Aaron Heilman‘s strong June continues, as he threw another scoreless frame. Heilman has allowed only one run on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over 9.0 innings this month.
The Mets look to take the rubber game of their three-game series versus the Rockies tomorrow with Mike Pelfrey taking the hill, starting at 3:05 pm.
