Note: Mike Pelfrey is Pitching Well

by Matthew Cerrone on June 23rd, 2008 at 7:19 am

In yesterday’s win over the Rockies, Mike Pelfrey gave up three hits, five walks, struck out five, and did not allow a run through the 5.2 innings of work.

In his last five starts, the Mets are 4–1, during which Pelfrey is 2–0 with a 2.79 ERA.

Pelfrey, talking to reporters after the game:

“I feel like I’m making progress…

“I’m headed in the right direction.  It’s a process and I feel like I’m starting to get there.”

In the bottom of the first inning, with a one-run lead, the Rockies loaded the bases against Pelfrey, who then threw a wild pitch by Ramon Castro, who chased after the ball as the runner from third broke for home.  Castro made a decent throw to Pelfrey, who tagged the runner sliding in to home plate for the second out.

Pelfrey then struck out Garrett Atkins to end the inning without allowing a run.

he’s being far more aggressive of late, all while using two different fastballs…

…also, is it me, or did pelfrey start growing the beard the minute Rick Peterson left the locker room

speaking of changes, on Friday, Jerry Manuel made John Maine stay on the mound to hand off the ball to the incoming relief pitcher during Friday’s game, so he would not have the chance to bark at the home plate umpire…Pedro Martinez then remained on the mound during Saturday’s game to hi-five Claudio Vargas…and so, pelfrey, not wanting to bream tradition, did the same yesterday as Joe Smith entered the game
