postGame: M’s 11 Mets 0
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 24, 2008 10:27 pm

The Mets (37–39) lost to the Mariners (28–49) by the score of – wait for it – 11–0 at Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

However, in case you missed it, know that Oliver Perez continues to be a total mess; it’s weird seeing David Wright on the bench; Jose Reyes was the only player in the Mets starting lineup under the age of 30; Luis Castillo lost the handle on a ground ball that could have ended the inning, but instead let two runs score; the Mets offense can not get on balance; Fernando Tatis and Brian Schneider are the only one’s capable of hitting a knuckle ball; and the most entertaining part of the game was not the game, but when Jerry Manuel got ejected defending Carlos Beltran, who was baited in to an argument about balls and strikes by the umpire, who then ejected Beltran.

The Mets are 3–4 since Jerry Manuel replaced Willie Randolph.

The Mets conclude their three-game series against the M’s tomorrow night at Shea Stadium, with John Maine (7-5, 3.78 ERA) facing Miguel Batista (3-9, 6.26 ERA).

    Jerry Manuel for President

  2. kd bart says:

2006: 3 regulars and one semi-regular batted .300 or better.

2008: No one currently batting .300

    2006: 200 homers

2008: On pace for 130-135 homers

Pre-testing for ‘roids and greenies, respectively: Tatis and Nixon are formidable.

Post-testing: Your 2008 New York Mets.

Did we have a right side of our infield tonight? Why bother?

I was so disgusted with this game, i left at the end of the 5th inning because i couldn’t take it anymore. Down 6-0, i knew the game is over. This team is a joke, what a waste of time

  6. MetsFan4Decades says:

Man, watching that game…..well, I’m running out of words lately. Awful is about the best I can do tonight. Of course, I’ll be back tomorrow…

Good for Jerry on that umpire confrontation and good for Beltran on having Jerry’s back as well. Beltran said he thinks that’s the angriest he’s ever been during his career.

And Kudos to Jerry for saying ‘We are just a bad offense ball club right now’. He knows it, he knows we know it, no sense beating around the bush on that. He actually said the fans deserve better.

And from his post game comments, it will be interesting to see what he does with Ollie now….

    • kd bart says:

When your are batting Nixon, Tatis, Schneider and Chavez you are truly a bad offensive team. That lineup is not going to runsgenerate 5-6 runs a night. You got to hope for great pitching and hope to squeeze 3-1/2-1 type victories where you can build runs. Big innings are not coming around too often

  7. Jova1931 says:

I missed tonight’s game, and I’ve come to the conclusion that these are our Mets. Complete inconsistancy. But I will say this, I loved what Carlos Beltran did. Loved it! And the umpire was totally in the wrong, and you never see Beltran like that but I just liked the emotion of the entire season being exerted on the umpire’s unprofessionaly actions.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Huh? Oh yeah, that blip on the radar. Most of it was just a solid, endless expanse of black.

    • Mookie1986 says:

This is when you finally were able to come to that conclusion? Not at any other point during this horrific season in which the Mets have continued (from last season for cryin out loud) to play a nice, mediocre .500 ball?

Kudos for the glass half full, but welcome to reality. Sorry it blows.

  8. Deaner says:

That’s why I like Manuel in this spot.

Is he better than Willie? Maybe, but that’s not saying much.

What he doesn’t do is mince words. He says it and it’s out there, which is great to hear as a fan.

  10. garykeithron says:

i think what the mets should have learned from these 2 games is this: intentionally walk the pitcher.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Wish I could laugh at that but that turned out to be dead accurate these past couple of games….

  11. garykeithron says:

did i hear gary apple say that the mets made a move?

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

muniz is up, vargas down…who cares, the season was done after the brave series

      • Deaner says:

        Vargas?

Of all the people who suck…

        • ravin108 says:

seriously.. vargas is perfect for the long man role. when the game is over in the 4th inning, he’ll eat up innings for you.

        • Danny says:

I have a feeling that the Mets are prepping to move Ollie to the bullpen with this move.

        • metsfrenzy says:

he should be moved to the minors or moved in a trade in July.. there should be no chance of resigning this ineffective lefthander for the 1in 5 chance he is going to piutch a good game… get somnething for him while you can…

  12. hbean says:

New Slogan for the 2008 Mets:

The New York Mets: We make bad teams look great!

    • hbean says:

I mean seriously. We just got beat 11-0 the *worst* team in baseball.

Last night we lost because our “ace” gave up a grand slam to an AL *pitcher*.

Its time to dump what we can, call Minnesota, beg for Carlos Gomez back, and batten down the hatches for another losing season.

  13. WrightsRight says:

I was out to dinner tonight and checked the game on my Blackberry. I noticed it was 10-0, and nearly puked up my steak. 11-0 and there goes the creamed spinache.

Just catching up on the post-game show now but it takes a lot of hard work and effort to lose – no, to get blown out – by the worst team in baseball. I haven’t been big on hyperbole on this site, but a loss like this demands it – get rid of OP Einstein. His inconsistency is murdering this team. Make Castillo strictly part-time. Call up Carp or Murphy or someone from my company softball team and get rid of Delgado. And yes, get rid of HoJo. I loved him 1986-1990, but I want a Tony Gwynn/Paul Molitor/George Brett type to be my hitting coach, not someone like HoJo as hitting coach…the way this team hits, I feel they’re out of the movie Idiocricy. They’re morons at the plate. No approach whatsover. Whatever, it’s a mess, these are the games you win….horrid..

  14. SantanaCYYOung says:

    release delgado
    trade beltran
    buyout castillo
    trade perez
    trade pedro
    trade heilman
    trade showenweis
    fire hojo
    dfa: tatis, anderson, easly

    find new players.

  15. Mookie1986 says:

11-0 against the worst team in the entire universe.

Why bother writing a wrap-up thread? So not worth the effort.

    Take the night off, Matt.

“In case you missed it, know that you’d have had a better time thumb-wrestling with your garbage disposal.”

    Ollie to AAA.

    Castillo to the unemployment line.

    Delgado to a ledge somewhere.

Mike Carp and Argenis Reyes to the starting lineup. Wagner traded at the deadline. Thank you and good night.

    It’s a start.

    • Mookie1986 says:

No. Ollie to single A. Let him and D-Train work it out together in nowheresville.

  17. bigben10471 says:

There’s a video of the ejections on mets.com right now. Unbelievable, that ump needs to be disciplined, just like last year when Mike Winters baited Milton Bradley. Despicable.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

That’s all well and good, but there’s an elephant in the room, and someone spray-painted METS SUCK! on its ample derriere.

  18. stickguy says:

I’ve said for a while now that while the Mets could theoretically get ehalthy and hot and make a run at the playoffs, it seemed unlikely.

Some years just aren’t meant to be, and a combination of guys losing their talent, and a ton of injuries, and you get a .500 year.

As others have noted, this off season was going to be a major overhaul anyway, win or lose (intentional? WHo knows).

So the question becomes, do you wait it out and see how this bunch finishes the year (who knows, maybe the OF gets healthy and they go on a run!)? Try to clear out the dead wood (much of which is leaving anyway) to get some prospects?

Or option #3, the scry one: Make trades trying to add more band aides for a PS run in 2008. WHich probably menas goodbye to the few good prospects left, which means they are in a much bigger hole in this off season.

I am OK with run out the string, or sell deadwood. I don’t support panic trades, since most likely it won’t work.

ANd if it fails, it could sink them for many years to come. Right now, they can easily be competitive for the PS in 2009, with a couple of shrewd moves, a little health (and just a smidge of luck!)

I also like the idea of getting some prospects a look now, so they won’t be as overwhelmed if they win a job next year (say, Carp?)

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Ibanez and Kendry Morales. That way you get the best of both worlds and you dont lose any valuable chips.

    • ginsengbomb says:

Probably the most reasonable, even-handed, thoughtful post I have ever seen on here. Seriously.

  19. beef says:

I am finishd with this team, until they get rid of delcrapo and bring up carp and evens(who was never given a real chance) i am done following………..

    • niteplanner says:

it really sucks when a Mets game puts you in a bad mood for the night.
To me, that ump started with Beltran. I could have sworn he mocked Beltran by saying, ‘would you like me to clean the plate for you?’ – and then bumped Jerry. Too much.

But regardless, that didn’t cost them the game. It’s all the offense right now. Hopefully, Church helps a bit, but that’s it…a bit.

I was really cursing the TV when Vargas was kept in for so long, but then realized it didn’t make a difference who was pitching at that point.

I still vote for Bonds in left field. Can’t get much worse can it? Would definitely keep the focus off the rest of the underachievers! (And for those who criticized me a few months ago about speed….Speed means nothing if you’re not on base!)

  20. toomanyuniforms says:

Hey, give Omar a break! If Church had been out there, it might have been 11-1!!!

  21. Jose Reyes was the only player in the Mets starting lineup under the age of 30

    D: D: D:

  22. tengobotas says:

The only thing Jerry did was give the fans something to clap about when there was literally nothing else worth cheering for the whole game. Beltran was just letting lose because he hates every person on the team and cant take it anymore. The whole thing just looked sad to me.

  23. Matt Hinrichs says:

    Typical Mets…RA Dickey…

Why do I continue to watch?

  24. dykstraw II says:

i dunno. between the grand slam last night and the 11-0 tonight i have to just laugh it off.

  25. FOUL-BALL says:

I was watching tonights game with a calm and peacefulness I never had before, no, it was not drugs, it was a zen type of chant I keeped repeating over and over again; the met are a .500 plus or minus club, the mets are a .500 plus or minus club, and it help me smile as the roof of shea stadium was crashing down on my team. The mets are a.500 plus or minus club, the mets are a .500 plus or minus club. I use to be angry with the mets when they lost to last place teams. I was under the impression that this club had first place type of players, how foolish of me. now i’m at peace. The mets are a .500 plus or minus club…

    • rsbayridge says:

you’re right on.. this is an average ball club right now. No consistency in any area over a decent stretch. Good starting pitching and defense for a few games. Good bullpen for a few games. A few clutch hits here and there. Nothing over a decent stretch of time and rarely are all areas clicking simultaneously. All signs of a mediocre team. Of course, I thought the same about the football Giants last year up to the last couple of weeks of the season.

The good news is that nobody seems to want to take control of this division. Ya Gotta Believe.

  26. steve333 says:

    FIRE OMAR
For crying out loud put us out of our misery already. Get rid of Omar the mediocre, get Bernazard out of Shea, dump everyone and start all over.

    This team is a trainwreck.

    • ginsengbomb says:

I tend to agree. Omar did a fantastic job of bringing respectability back to this team, and I still think the Johan trade was outstanding, but his “young and athletic” mantra has proven to be, for whatever reason, total bunk. I think he, like so many of us, is stuck in 2006, when his major FA signings brought us within an inch of the World Series. He got lucky that year, plain and simple.

The core of the team is still good. Reyes, Wright and Beltran are excellent, and Santana is an ace. It is unfortunate that the team will now need some damn good luck to build a young set of surrounding parts for them. As long as those four remain young, productive and healthy, this team will always have a shot at greatness, but it’s becoming harder to envision everything coming together at once the way it did in 2006.

      • gomets6091 says:

oh come on. Omar didn’t “get lucky” in 2006. He designed a great team that was built to win in 2006, and unfortunately, they didn’t. Since then, however, he has failed to adapt and turn that team into one that could win in 2007 or compete in 2008. That is his failing. But lets not pretend like he didn’t do a great job building that ‘06 team: luck implies he was incompetent and fell into that team, which he was not and did not.

  27. Adam_Jones says:

At least the Phils, Marlins and Braves all lost.

  28. patrick says:

Ladies on the field, Gangsters are comedians.

Jerry will save us all…oh HE JUST REALIZED he is managing the same team Willie managed and he was coaching.

What was it Billy Wagner said…oh yeah

    F#$CKING SHOCKER

  29. johnnyvegas77 says:

How many “well, at least it can’t get any worse than this” moments can this team have? Pretty remarkable, and, to coin a phrase, “Amazing.”

Flipped on the game when it was 6-0 and laughed. Later on, I flipped back over and pointed out the (at the time) 10-0 score to my wife, who simply said “Oh, that can’t be good”, which, IMO, pretty much sums up what it’s been like being a Mets fan over the last 12 months.

It is clearly time to move our eyes to 2009, which is fine. The last thing we want is a rerun of 2004 (ill-advised panic trades) here. If the club does that, they run the risk of being MLB’s version of the Knicks– lots of old, expensive players and no hope of getting younger anytime soon.

Well at least we have Gary, Ron, and Keith to keep us entertained. These guys are continually phenomenal and surprisingly candid. This is (and remains) very refreshing, given the sorry state of the team.

  30. koosman says:

What a hungry, passionate team. Fun to watch and easy to root for. This is clearly a group of players who only care about one thing: winning. Whether it’s Delgado going all out, hustling down the line and sacrificing his body for the good of the team, Castillo with his blazing speed and awesome power, Alou and his iron-man endurance, Perez and his bulldog mentality, Wright and his Brooks Robinson impersonations down at 3rd–the list never ends. These Mets are a pure joy to behold. Reminds you of 1991 or 2003.

  32. RockfordMetsFan says:

    Matt,

Love the Charlie Brown pic. I’m a huge Peanuts fan, and it occurs to me that the Mets are starting to remind me of CB’s baseball team. Perez is the now new Charlie Brown.
