Quote: Manuel in Search of a Consistent Formula
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 24, 2008 10:35 pm

Following tonight’s 11–0 loss to the Mariners, Jerry Manuel told reporters that his team needs to figure some things out, as a staff, ‘to get on track and stay on track,’ adding:

“We might have some tough decisions to make…We can’t continue to go play good, don’t play good, and not find a consistent formula. We have to find a consistent formula at some point, and we have not found that yet. So, we’ve got to do what we can. It could mean some tough decisions…Could be lineup changes, could be rotation changes, could be all types of changes, we have to do what we have to do to get this team on track. We have such great fans, and they’re just waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting for us to do well, just hoping we do well and we’re not giving them anything and that’s not fair to them.”

According to Manuel, he and Omar Minaya have not yet talked about potential trade acquisitions, however he says they soon will, ‘No doubt about that.’

This is what I like to hear from a manager.

    • Really Carl Pavano says:

I would rather here they fired delgado and that they won’t ever not let Wright play. JESUS. we need him in there clearly.

if reyes is the heart of the teams momentum (when playing well) then wright is the frickin kidney

    • anditsouttahere says:

      where is carp already?

  2. NCMetsGuy says:

    Good to hear.
    Release Delgado.
    Trade for Morales and Ibanez.
    Trade Perez for prospects.
    Trade Heilman for Fuentes.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

Ibanez is old and will cost prospects. If Morales was that good, he would be playing everyday for the Angels. i agree that we should release Delgado and trade Perez for prospects(if anyone wants him). I’d rather have Heilman than Fuentes….Heilman is coming around now and is younger than Fuentes. Lets just build for next year because, clearly this team is mediocre and by trading for band aid solutions will further gut the farm system. It doesnt matter who the manager is when you dont have enough talent to win games, especiallythe offense.

    • dwright2 says:

trade santana for R.A dickey. santana is a nice pitcher but his velocity is down and is struggling. as we can see R.A dickey is a guy that can go out there and dominate great lineups like the mets. wemreally need him to help this team

      • patrick says:

        LOL, now yer talking

        • There's Always '09 says:

What dwright said:”R.A dickey is a guy that can go out there and dominate great lineups like the mets. wemreally need him to help this team”

What dwright meant to say: “R.A dickey is a guy that can go out there and dominate AAA lineups like the mets. wemreally need him to help this team”

  3. DMAT89 says:

big move made by omar..vargas DFA, Muniz up! DIVISION TITLE HERE WE COME!

    • NCMetsGuy says:

What the hell is the point in that? Vargas is better than Perez at this point. Trade Heilman and bring up Muniz but why on earth with Pedro and Perez struggling would you release a guy with a 3.86 ERA?

      • ravin108 says:

I believe Omar should definitely entertain trade offers for Heilman. I’d love to see him moved for a mid-rotation potential ground ball pitcher.

Perez, I have no clue what to do with.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Heilman for a mid-rotation ground ball pitcher? I’d be happy with a mid-career backup second baseman, and that’ a lot more realistic. Wagner should traded at the deadline. He’s the only vet with value. Tell me he wouldn’t waive a no trade to be helicoptered out of New York a la Kurt Russell.

        • ravin108 says:

Heilman has more value than you think he does

        • toomanyuniforms says:

          I really hope you’re right.

        • metschamps says:

Heilman is starting to come into his own now – like he typically does this point in the season -why would you want to trade him now? He’s been looking nasty out there lately.

        • als102 says:

the team needs bats does anyone see that, pitching could be worked out but the fact that they cant score runs is the real problem

        • patrick says:

Heilman has plenty of value, he could donate all of his organs

        • There's Always '09 says:

i think we should buy tickets on the first base side of the field level….storm the field…tar and feather delgado….and leave.

  4. dave27 says:

I don’t care where we are on 7/31, I want Ollie Perez gone. He’s a gutless loser.

The history on MLB is littered with guys just like him, with – in the immortal words of Crash Davis – a million dollar arm and a 5-cent head.

Btw, remember when we thought we might sign Kyle Lohse for the #5 spot? Anyone seen his numbers? Good times.

    • The Glider says:

Lohse wouldn’t have signed a one year deal with an east coast team, I don’t think. And we didn’t want to commit to a 3 or 4 years to him. But, yes, I did take notice. How could you not.

But is our starting pitching the problem? I don’t think so. Though I don’t know how much longer we can go with Perez if he continues to stink up the joint. Perez, however, was not the big question mark in the rotation, it was One-Pitch Pelfrey. Now Pelfrey is up and Perez is down. Maybe we should just look at Perez as our 5th stater and Pelfrey as our 3rd?

      • als102 says:

I agree i think thats what manuel was hinting at Perez is on his way down in the rotation

        • There's Always '09 says:

I think Pelfrey is coming into his own and I can’t say enough how happy I am that we were able to keep him in the Santana deal. He has a top of the rotation fastball. If he can develop 2 pitches in the next 2 seasons, we will be going into 2010 with a 26 year old starting pitcher with a few years major league experience under his belt, with a mid-90s fastball and a few out pitches. All of that, in the prime of his career. Pelfrey may be the one lone bright spot in this otherwise pretty dim season…….so far, anyway.

    • WrightsRight says:

5 cents is being generous….i don’t think there’s any change in the skull of his.

  5. Really Carl Pavano says:

    clowns

  6. gottabelieve07 says:

Jerry Manuel is a straight shooter and I like him as manager.

That this team still stinks doesn’t vindicate Willie Randolph, who was clearly part of the problem, but just highlights how poorly designed this roster is.

The simplest way to see it is that this team has 4 core players in their prime who are worth building around both this year and in the future in Reyes, Wright, Church and Beltran. It has a solid platoon of 2 good catchers in Schneider and Castro.

Other than that it has a lot of holes. Since there’s no messiah on the horizon you have to fill those 3 remaining spots (LF, 1B and 2B) with the best role players you can.

There’s just no reason not to call up a guy like Carp and give him a chance to try one of those spots. There’s no reason not to at least try Val Pascucci as a potential role players or part of a platoon in LF. And while I doubt Castillo is going anywhere, would anyone be crying if he were replaced briefly by someone like Argenis Reyes who will at least get to balls hit his way?

Aaron Heilman and Oliver Perez are complete headcases. If at all possible, send them down to AAA and let them get their therapy there. Tony Armas (can’t believe I’m saying this) is probaby a better option than Perez right now. Muniz was called up after the game tonight, and he could help in the pen.

This team needs major changes. Might as well get some hungry players up here and cut the fat.

  7. shadesofshea says:

Well, in better news, only 2 more months til football season starts!

  8. NCMetsGuy says:

Anyone know for sure if we just released Vargas? Shoot I would think considering his numbers he would have had some trade value.

    • stickguy says:

Earlier someone said he was sent down. That is OK if they are keeping him. Losing him though wouldn’t make much sense.

Time for some of the underperforming vets (Cstillo, Delgado) to go on the DL (R&R), and let guys like Reyes and Carp have a taste of the big time. Can’t really hurt at this point.

      • There's Always '09 says:

I think the player with the best trade value other than the obvious pieces on this team (Wright, Reyes, Beltran) is Pelfrey.

I really hope Omar isn’t tempted to make a move with this guy. I still feel like he can be a #2 pitcher in this league. He can be an ace if his secondary and tertiary pitches develop.

  9. Mookie1986 says:

Apparently firing half the coaching staff isn’t cutting it. Time for massive changes on the player end, and that means no cutting corners!

Release players, trade players, send down players… major tree shakage! I don’t care if they exchange the entire Bingo squad for this group. At least they will play hard.

If they are gonna lose anyway, may as well make some very drastic changes. It’s now that time.

  10. WrightsRight says:

Nice to see Manuel lives in a reality-based words. Smart words…let’s see if they turn into action…

  11. Wayneoo says:

    Walk the walk buddy.

  12. 4eyeJoe says:

great job by oliver perez……….cannot beat poor offensive teams and can only do decently against power house offense. he has a great arm but the mind is the size of a peanut. when your freakin slider is not working, throw your damn curve ball and fastball, but no you continue to throw the slider. get rid of Perez after the Yankee series or something.

  13. DMAT89 says:

SNY Postgame show said Vargas was DFA’d for Muniz which would make it true…i think

  14. spscorpion says:

This reaffirms my belief that most mets’ fans know nothing about the Mets. The Mets’ are not a winning team, we have never been a winning team this year. Yet, most mets’ fans want to act like this team was a playoff contender; haha. We let go of a manager that gave us 3 consecutive WINNING seasons in a row, and we didn’t even let him finish a year where he was .500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This drives me crazy, because unlike a lot of Mets’ “fans” that show up on this page, and complain on sports talk radio, I’ve been a fan for life. I’ve been through the Bonilla days, the Mo Vaughn days, and now I guess I have to go through the Omar days. Because, instead of building a consistent winner with a good manager, we look for the quick fix. We get older with players and let the team get worse in the process.

So, all you idiotic mets’ fans that wanted the change for the sake of change; congratulations, you got your wish. A BAD TEAM, A BAD MANAGER, FILLED WITH BAD PLAYERS!!!!!!! So, shut up and stop complaining, because you got what you deserved and wanted. IDIOTS!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Um . . . oh gosh . . . you’re . . .I . . . you’re right. It is my fault. I blew that 7 game lead, signed a bunch of aging veterans to contracts that will outlast their social security, took away Delgado’s HGH. . . . Yup. My bad. I’m sorry to have ruined your precious Mets. Now go shove it up your ass.

    • stickguy says:

all your points are fine, but I disagree that Manual is worse than WIllie. You seem to be implying that they had a strong manager in place that would lead a sustained winning program. And I really don’t think Willie was that guy.

I will give you that Manual might not be better than WIllie, but he certainly isn’t worse, and more improtantly right now, he is different!

      • Ceetar says:

I’ve been saying that if you make change for change’ssake, get rid of Manuel too otherwise it doesn’t work.

But..What’s the obsession with change? Maybe what we needed was consistancy? Sign/promote a guy for LF taht was going tostay healthy. Have Omar come out and guarentee Willie was going to be manager all year (not like he couldn’t have then fired him anyway, without the month of distracted wondering if/when)

If anything, this team has lacked consistency, so why did we think change was going to make them settle in?

    • MetsFranz10 says:

you’re a total idiot. you are pathetic and are an embarrassment as a mets fan. like we need some jackass like you to act like you know it all…go cheer for another team you idiot

    • ravin108 says:

Usually when I hear a guy talk about being a “Mets fan for life” they usually revert back to the days before Bobby Bo.

      • als102 says:

Lol thats exactly what i was thinking so your Mets History goes back to Mo Vaugn and Bonilla thats pretty weak. try again buddy. get some real historyy under your belt and then come bash the real Mets fans

  15. fortleemets says:

    Pirates beat the Yanks 12-5.

  16. NegativeFan says:

Don’t wait too long on changes…get it done by end of the week.

Release Delgado, Perez to AAA or bullpen, Castillo officially designated platoon player, etc

Not that it will help them win but at least I don’t have to look at the dead weight anymore

    • 4eyeJoe says:

i think it is better off if we can trade Perez for maybe two double a prospects to a contending team. it seems more and more likely that we won’t get any draft picks when perez leaves at the end of the season with the way he is pitching.

      • Bench5urvivor says:

perez to st louis for anthony reyes and some other part, anyone?

looks like the cards are ready to give up on him, still has talent, maybe change of scenery for both guys. Just hope it doesn’t work all that well for ollie

    • Ceetar says:

As the writer of Optimistic Mets Fan I feel the need to respond to your stupid negativity.

There isn’t a more productive option for Delgado in the minors or on the market. Perez would be even worse in the bullpen, he walks too many. Castillo isn’t have a great year, but he’s not horrible, not killing this team, leads with RISP, and Easley sucks.

If you think the Mets have no chance at winning, why are you commenting and watching? turn it off, starting doing mock fantasy football drafts and berate the Jets on thejetsblog.com

  17. stickguy says:

hopefully Manual speaking out is intentional, and supported by Omar. If so, it is laying the groundwork (and calling out the players!) for upcoming shake up moves. Hopefully lots, and swift and painful if need be.

If he was just spouting off, it is just wishful thinking (getting the fans hopes up!), although it still might put a burr up some players butts.

    • spscorpion says:

Manuel talks the talk; but he doesn’t walk the walk. That’s why they ran him out of chi-town. He talks a great game. He says what EVERYBODY wants to hear. But at the end of the day, the results are never there. When he was manager of the year he had an UNREAL team in chicago; check the squad. Manuel is overrated just like the mets and omar. PERIOD. It sucks that SNY keeps talking about this guy like he’s the second coming.

      • fortleemets says:

Manuel was waiting to get thrown out of a game. Don’t think for a second he was hearing dumb mets fan on WFAN screaming, “Why doesn’t Willie go out and kick some dirt and scream!” I do like what I am hearing, but I miss Willie. Please listen to yourselves…stop with the crazy talk of “we need new blood, new players, etc.” Most minor leaguers dont pan out and if they do, they are almost never immediate impact players. Can you guys name me one player who has played for the Mets as long as Derek Jeter has played for the Yankees? No you can’t. Why? Cause the second our team starts looking shaky, our thought process is to get rid of everyone. That worked well in the late 70’s, that worked well in the early 90’s. You fans who are complaining will be the first to leave once they are completely out of it. You are likely the same fan who hasn’t watched a Knicks game in 7 years.

    • NegativeFan says:

Hey, if there AREN’T changes, Manuel has a shot to be here longer than Overrated Omar

  18. 4eyeJoe says:

The only thing that i am looking forward with confidence on this team is seeing John Maine pitch and also Mike Pelfrey. Hopefully, the Maine Event will stop this crap tomorrow.

  19. DMAT89 says:

A caller just said on the FAN that they heard a trade including Jason Bay to the mets…but the host(i completely blanked on his name) said hes hearing that rumor too but has not heard any truth to it.

  20. metsfan119 says:

Let’s give Manuel some time, Willie managed over 180 games of crap play and he didn’t do sh!t. At least Manuel overachieved with an average team and won a manager of the year award. The guy deserves the rest of the season.

    • fortleemets says:

actually willie managed approx. 550 games and had a winning season in each of his three seasons and brought the Mets to the NLCS during his second season. Joe Torre didn’t get to the CLS until his 22nd season as manager. I can’t wait until Willie goes in the Hall as the Yankees manager; btw, he is definitely going to be hired if Girardi doesn’t pan out.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Great. If you’re more a Willie fan than a Met fan, I think you got fired last week. Bye.

      • metsfan119 says:

Willie also had Pedro, Beltran, Wagner, and for all intents and purposes, a good Delgado bought for him. So comparing Willie to the pre-Yankee seasons of Torre (who at least made the playoffs with the Braves) is pretty misleading. Point being, the Mets downfall (which was around 180 games) came under Willie’s watch. The guy did not do a good job.

  21. Jmiles says:

Putred,Pathetic,Disgracefull.Miserable.Take your pick to discribe tonights game.
One of the most miserable losses of the last few years.I would love to know what Scott Boras’s game plan is to get Perez big $$.
Ron Darling so nailed it during the post game show.Perez’s head is all screwed up and it may never straighten out.
I can’t take Castillo anymore, 1/2 of the team is absolutely useless.
Delgado was laughing in the dugout during the game-he’s got to Go!!
Oh yeah did I mention Putrid,Pathetic etc

  22. spscorpion says:

In response to the two comments:

    1) Blowing the 7 game lead was OMAR’s fault, not the fans or Willie’s. I blame the fans for the talk radio and media BS that happened afterwards. So, why do I blame Omar? You can’t blame the manager for a situation when everybody he puts in fails. When you put in your closer with a 2-run lead; he should close the game; right? If you put in your lefty specialist vs. a lefty, he should get the guy out or atleast not give up a homerun right? Therefore, the problem isn’t the manager, its the GM. Because the GM gives the manager the talent.

If you noticed, it was Omar that decided to trade ALL of our good bullpen help for elderly pitching in 07. I remember from the beginning of the year, and I knew that we would be in trouble. The bullpen was our key in 06, but if you saw every game, then you would know that.

Willie has no say in players or contracts. He didn’t even pick his own coaches for God’s sake. I can tell you don’t watch every game, because if you did, then you would notice how we lost those games at the end, and you would see my point. But, you obviously don’t watch the games.

    2) As far as the second comment is concerned. Only time will tell if I’m right with Willie vs. Manuel. But, it shouldn’t have come down to that. Mets’ fans got cocky. They believed for a second that they were a winning franchice. And like I said, I’m a lifer, which means that I KNOW that we aren’t a winning franchice and never have been. We look back at 86 like it was yesterday and not 22 years ago. PATHETIC! We call on people like Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter as true Mets’ players when they spent most of their career with other teams.

My point is this, as we started to build a winning tradition with Willie; Going far into the playoffs when we didn’t expect it, and showed back to back to back winning seasons, you don’t fire that guy when he has a .500 record before the all star break when your franchice isn’t a winning organization!!!!!!!!!!! That’s stupid and bad business. Someone tell me the last time that was done.

I would understand firing him if he was below .500 at the end of the season. But damn, he won 4 out of 5, started to look good, and then they canned him. And I find it funny how so many mets’ fans are asking for bobby v, when these same fans wanted him fired too. Its a cycle with the Mets and I’m tired of it.

    a) get a good manager
    b) get rid of young talent for old washed up players
    c) fire manager
    d) fire GM
    e) repeat A through D for another 20 freakin’ years.

    • fortleemets says:

      Here, here!.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

We started to build a winning tradition with Willie? Did I miss that during the 180 games of sub-.500 ball or the worst collapse in baseball history?

      • TobeRinkler says:

Somebody said they saw you sorting through your uniforms, apparently looking for something to wear that was more to your choosing.

    • metsfan119 says:

I see, well then by your logic Willie had nothing to do with the Mets success in ‘06. You know what, let’s not even have a manager, we can just have a robot set the lineups of the players that Omar compiles.

By the way, “going far into the playoffs when we didn’t expect it,” are you fkcing kidding me? The Mets were BY FAR the best team in the league that season and they lost to the damn Cardinals. I understand you like the guy, but enough of the baseless pandering for Willie, the guy didn’t do anything.

      • TobeRinkler says:

The team’s had flat spots since the days of Howe, & 2006 was no exception–in regular season and playoffs. It wasn’t all fun & games.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

sad but true….history repeats itself with the Mets.

    • als102 says:

Really a winning tradition did i fall a sleep during one of our World Series wins when Willie was here i must have missed it. I was awake to watch us crap the bed last year though. Are. you kidding me go route for some other team dude youre a joke with that starting winning tradition crap. Dude get over your boyfriend Willie is gone, its over move on Im tired of hearing about the guy hes not with us

  23. spscorpion says:

hey moron, shove it up your ass. Look at the facts and come at me when you know something. IDIOT

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I’m sure you’ll figure out the mysteries of the comment nesting system by the end of the year, round about when your phonics are taking shape.

    • TobeRinkler says:

Why are you so disproportionately angry? You seemed very rational & on the money when writing that nice analysis…

  24. teufelshuffle86 says:

I still like Manuel as a manager. The guy seems like he wants to win ball games right away, While that’s not happening right now at least he has been vocal about things changing and wanting to improve. He’s also taken steps to try and get this team going while Willie just sat there. I like him getting tossed tonight and the fire he showed. Give him some time.

  25. AlreadyMissShea says:

    Here is the bottom line.
    ANYONE…
ANYONE who says they liked Willie or they missed Willie at this point should be BANNED from posting on a blog for Mets fans. There are plenty of places for Yankee fans to post.

From time to time I am just going to have to check in here to remind some of you that you are retards who come from bad families and don’t know the first thing about sports.

At this point, since the team is not going to win anything this year anyway, the goal should be to completely remove ANYONE who supports Willie Randolph at this point. Keep them out of Shea. Keep them off of this blog. Send them back to Yankeeland to their true favorite team. Let them find other places to post.

ANYONE who supports Willie at this point is a GUTLESS COWARD.

    • tengobotas says:

      Meds. Stat.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

        Gutless. Coward.

        No need for meds here.
I just don’t have any respect for closet Yankee fans like you. You’ll get your chance to cheer for Willie again when your Yankees hire him back in a couple of years for 3rd base coach.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Hey wait! We were “building a winning tradition with with Willie!” Also, Mo Vaughn was a spectacular Met!

        • beltran the warrior says:

you are an idiot. gutless cowards? please take a pill…or three.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

        Life. Stat-er.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I really don’t care. I said I wouldn’t post on this blog again, and a few people didn’t want to let it go at that. Well I don’t really have the time to waste sitting around here reading and commenting all day like most of you do. I go outside and do stuff and have friends and money and things that keep me busy.

But every now and then I will check in and remind the Willie-Lovers that they aren’t fooling anyone. No real fan of the New York Mets would say they miss him or want him back.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

That was really directed at Tango-bot, or whatever his name is, but hey, congrats on having friends outdoors, or whatever.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

          Thank you ma’am.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

          Welcome, Ms. Shea.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Blow it out your ass retard.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You can stop sniveling any time now. . . .

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I did long enough to laugh at you.

          Your turn.

    • Mookie1986 says:

      Crazy person says what?

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Eh, I’m not crazy. I’m working late and I’m board so I figured I would just troll some of you. I’m probably the only one who has posted here tonight that’s actually in a good mood.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

OOPS, meant I’m bored. Not board. Anyway, the whole thing was basically a joke. I didn’t even watch the game tonight. The ticket is still sitting in my briefcase.

    • grmetsfan says:

Couldn’t agree with you more, I was sitting section 10 lodge tonight and this guy a couple of rows down was chanting ‘We Want Willie!” over and over.

You can’t make stuff like this up, people like this should not be posting on this blog or showing up at Shea.

    • patrick says:

Weren’t you going to stop posting already. Don’t throw HTML in glass blogs.

  26. spscorpion says:

yeah, i’m still figuring this thing out; but its all good. As far as the 180 game comment goes; I completely understand. However, when you look at the facts it becomes a little clearer. We have actually been a .500 team since omar decided to fire our past hitting coach Rick Downs. And as you have probably noticed, our ability to come back has went to crap. Not to mention that our offense has consistently been in the middle of the pack or below since, and the only reason nobody brings it up is because HOJO is the hitting coach. (and I was a hojo fan, but come on!)

Nevertheless, I understand your point and I would have better understood his firing if he was sub .500 at the end of the year, its not like by firing him we would have made the playoffs anyways. So, if he couldn’t turn it around by the end of the year, then fire him. That’s the least you can do for a guy that gave you 3 winning seasons in a row. Which doesn’t happen that often for the mets’ organization.

  27. washtiger says:

Willie had to go. Plain and simple.

    Now let’s move on.

The spotlight is now on the GM, where it rightfully should be. Omar put this flawed team together. Now it’s time to cut the deadwood and begin to build around the 4 or so core players. Either he figures out how to fix the mess or be gone at the end of the season.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Exactly. You don’t fire the GM without at least taking a shot with a new manager. Right now, they’re still feeling phantom pain in the dugout, dealing with Randolph residue. In a month, if they’re still putrid (and yeah, all signs point to that), we can start discussing assumed names for Omar.

    • metsfan119 says:

Exactly, I don’t understand the people who are still whining about Willie. It’s over, the guy had more than enough time to get this team back on track, he didn’t, he deserved to be fired, the end.

      • The Glider says:

Right. Now we’ll find out what, at least, I already knew: this team sucks and it wasn’t Willie’s fault. You want to blame him for the collapse and fire him then, fine. But this year is not about Willie. It’s about Omar.

  28. dominicanboy08 says:

guys we are getting jason bay, just heard it in the radio

  29. freubr01 says:

We all need to take a deep breath…this team doesn’t look good, true…but we are only 4 out of 1st, and the phils, up until now, have been playing way over their heads…lets wait til church comes back to see if this team is as bad as it looks….at least manuel is open to change, unlike will, and look on the bright side..if all else fails, we can trade wags, schoe, heilman, etc. and get some good prospects or young players that we can plug in next year so we can go after cc or a big bopper in the offseason

    • The Glider says:

Agreed. We’re a move or two from bouncing back. Omar has to step up and make a couple of moves.

      • metsgo says:

thats a far stretch we are about five or six moves from bouncing back we need a left feilder a firstbasemen
a second basesmen a starting pitcher and a bullen arm

        • The Glider says:

. . . in a perfect world. All of that’s for next year. Right now, you can’t be so greedy. I think we can overcome the Phils with a LF and maybe a starting pitcher (though I believe if Perez continues to pitch like he has that Vargas would do a decent job in his place).

  30. EV says:

Omar has to go, people wanted Willie fired, fine, I have no problem with that, and in a COMPLETE SHOCKER the team basically plays the same way under Manuel. FIRE OMAR!!!!

    • freubr01 says:

omar may look bad, but lets be honest…should DW be batting below 300? beltran on pace for 25hrs? johan .500? i dont think anyone saw that coming…or OP totally s’ing the bed and maine not pitching like 07…but if he doesnt make moves to put them in the playoffs or in a better position for next season, fire him at the end of the year

      • EV says:

Ok, I hear what you are saying. But may look bad, no he LOOKS BAD. It’s Omar’s fault we have gotten ZERO production from left field and had to rely on a 41 year outfielder. It’s Omar ’s fault that we do not have a good minor system, and that it’s so bad and has a complete lack of depth that Robinson Cancel somehow stays on this team eventhough he has contributed what one hit. Plus the other retreads he has brought up, Raul Casanova, etc. Under Omar’s watch we had the worst collapse in the history of regular season baseball and this year’s version of the Worst Team Money Can Buy. No, he does NOT get another year, he needs to be fired this year.

        • freubr01 says:

alou is def on him, we all saw that coming…im not saying he should get next year, i mean until the end of this year to see what he does…im nt going to blame him for delgado cuz that trade should have put us into the WS in 06 and keeping him this year would be bad but there weren’t any other options (i do blame him now for holding on to him)…the only bad trades he made that hurt the farm was lindstrom (def a future closer) for jason vargas and bannister but he isnt doing so hot now…he shouldnt have resigned castillo, but who cares, not our money…the rotation looked solid from the beginning and still is

  31. dominicanboy08 says:

if the rumors are true about jason bay, omar needs to do it, we a right-handed power bat

    reyes
    castillo
    wright
    church
    beltran
    bay
    delgado
    castro

    much better

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

THERE WAS NO RUMOR YOU IDIOT.

Let me say it one more time.

A CALLER, someone who can dial a phone, called the station.

They asked the HOST if he knew anything about a trade for Bay.

The host said there was nothing to it.

You know who is keeping this rumor going now?

      YOU ARE.

    • Philnym31 says:

The Mets aren’t getting Jason Bay, it’s that simple. The Pirates are going to ask for a boatload of prospects in order to get him. We are in no shape to compete with other team’s farm systems around the league after the fallout of the Johan Santana trade. Frankly, you can forget about any big time trade happening by the Mets. We aren’t going to part with Fernando Martinez and rightfully so, because it is in our best interests to keep him and build on youth going forward.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      I hear we’re getting Bay

  32. EV says:

Oh will people stop with this 4 out first crap, we just lost two games to the Mariners,THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL, 16-2.
If we can’t beat the Mariners how the hell are we suppossed to beat the Yankees, Cardinals, and the Phillies. You could have had Church and Wright and the lineup and we would have probably lost 11-2, relax with this Church coming back going to change everything nonsense.

    • The Glider says:

I think you hit the nail on the head – inadvertently, though. The problem with this team is that we beat the Yankees, and Phillies, and Dodgers. It’s the stinky teams we can’t beat.

    • freubr01 says:

look at the phils last year, they were horrible against the nats and marlins but beat the mets…head to head is going to be key…and as for church, nobody thinks he is god, but it would help to have someone protecting beltran and wright, as there is nobody now, and from endy to church everyday is an enormous difference

      • EV says:

I agree Church coming back is big BUT I dont think that means they are going to go off on a 10 game winning streak. Face it, this is a bad Mets team that is going nowhere this year. Metsgo said it best we have to think like sellers.

        • freubr01 says:

we should definitely be sellers if we are still at .500 and 6 or 7 out…but lets give it another month, who knows what will happen…come on, if you’re a met fan, you have to have at least that much in you? we have dealt with a lot worse

  33. The Glider says:

Good news. A’s go up 3-1 against Phills. Game is in bottom of the 7th.

  34. EV says:

I agree, I like Bay, but the Pirates aren’t going to give him up for NOTHING. I’m pretty sure the Pirates are going to want something good for him, he does have 15 homers.

  35. metsgo says:

listen all of the fans writting in talking about the trades that need to be made have to stop and think that maybe this team needs to start thinking from a sellers point of veiw
Any trade made at this point is going to cost us talent which we dont have much of and if a trade is made we will still be to shallow and still wind up short of the ultimate goal of a world championship
start the sale now Pedro will be needed and can garner some young talent
Heilman still is interesting to other teams
Wagner will be another year older and worn down next year his services are still a asset to a team in the hunt
Pray for a team to need a second baseman and dont ask for nothing in return
Delgado wont muster any interest alou wont either perez might fill a need for some one in their bullpen
And I dont want to hear about these players no trade clause thats only a negotiating pont and means nothing at the end of someones contract after all what teams are going to need these guys in the last year of there contarct teams in stong contention
This team keeps looking like it has hit the bottom but then they do somthing like tonight and only makes the bottom look further away
I know that they are only 5 games out but with out any fight they are not going to make any surge they havent showed it by now and they wont show it by the end of the tyear

    • EV says:

Metsgo I agree with your thinking. I think the Mets have 4 trading chips:
      Perez
      Schoe
      Feliciano
      Wagner

      • metsgo says:

I forgot about show and feliciano but two left hand bullpen arms are an asset that we might want to keep

    • Tim in LA says:

Finally some sanity. Let’s be smart traders, dump some surplus and some bad blood and start being long-term thinkers again.

But of course it’s not going to happen because of the “media hit” and “fan perception”. The world is run by idiots.

  36. Midtown says:

Is anybody else completely in love with Jerry Manuel? I seriously had no idea he was such an intelligent human being who is sincerely passionate about the game of baseball and, more importantly, winning.

When I first heard Willie was fired and replaced by Manuel, I felt like I had gotten punched in the gut. Of course I was basing this solely on what I had seen from him as a bench coach. I assumed he’d be Willie the Second, the calm, cool, collected guy that seemed almost afraid of his own emotions.

Man was I wrong. The guy speaks his mind, stands up for his players, has a freakin’ PERSONALITY (maybe it’s overrated, but I love it nonetheless), and has a clue about what he’s doing out there. This team, over the last 7 games, has been much more entertaining to watch, despite the results being the same as they were pre-Manuel.

Obviously, as a die-hard Mets fan, I’d love to see this team start playing to their potential and stringing some wins together. And of course they need to make a few DRASTIC changes in regards to this disgusting, lazy roster. But to be completely honest, if this team plays .500 ball the rest of the way, I’ll take it a lot better with Manuel at the helm as opposed to Willie.

I can’t explain it. This team has just been given an unexplainable boost in likability.

    • freubr01 says:

well i think coming from willie, who never admitted his or the teams faults, it is refreshing to hear honesty, which is all mets fans want to hear…since we have been bs’ed our whole lives with things like Bobby Bo, Generation K, the 07 collapse etc….

      • The Glider says:

Willie wasn’t given that amount of rope to make these kinds of comments. Willie was a company man and didn’t undermine his GM or anybody else in the organization for that matter with the press.

        • freubr01 says:

but telling the media that his team needs to step up would not have been backtalking to his owner…but calling them racist on the other hand…

        • The Glider says:

Willie made comments to that effect. He supported his players to the press. What’s important is what he tells his players in the clubhouse; not what he tells the fans in the press.

        • freubr01 says:

ultimately, we dont know what he said in the clubhouse…i just never liked willie from day 1, he was a yankee and always will be, let them take him back

    • The Glider says:

You probably weren’t around when Gil Hodges managed the Mets. Hodges was about as no nonsense as they got. Willie reminded me a lot of Hodges and that is, amongst other reasons, why I liked him.

So, while I’m happy for you that you like Manual’s personality, . . . that, and a few more games like yesterday and tonight from the Mets, will get him fired too.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

        Manuel, not Manual.

      • istillhatemdonaldgrant says:

Willie is like Gil Hodges?? The Gil Hodges that walked out to left field and pulled Cleon when he loafed after a ball? Wille would have said that he liked his guys, Cleon shows good hustle, etc., etc. And he would have lost that team too.

Sorry — Willie is nothing like Gil Hodges.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

This guy knows what you want to hear, and says it. Just like any other manager, it will all mean squat if the team doesn’t win. The guess here is that he’s keeping the seat warm for whomever leads whatever collection of retreads is calling itself the Mets into Citi. “New stadium, new attitude!”

      • garykeithron says:

I’m starting to think that too.
-Telling us he’s going to bench shoddy players and then “resting” Castillo and Wright the day after they make fielding mistakes. Possibly true but a little suspicious.
-Assigned roles for relievers. Anyone figure out what those roles are yet?
-Leaving relievers out to pitch longer so as not to warm up as many relievers. Um….

  37. metsgo says:

I think manuel got thrown out because he knew this team was at the point of no return and he would win some fan fav plus watching this game from the club house was less painfull

    • The Glider says:

I was thinking the same thing. Strictly a PR move.

      • garykeithron says:

if that’s the case, he should have sprinkled handfuls of fertilizer around home plate

      • Midtown says:

Strictly a PR move? What a load of bull.

Managers really can’t win in New York. If Manuel pulls a Willie, and watches the whole argument unfold with a “duh!” look on his face, he has no backbone and is a wimp. But when he goes out to stand up for his player, it’s “strictly a PR move”. Give me a freakin’ break.

Any manager who has a brain and cares even a little about his team and his players would have went out there to give it to the ump. Showing up Beltran like that was completely uncalled for an unprofessional.

        Give it a rest.

        • andyncmetfan says:

Thanks Midtown. You are exactly right, I have been saying this forever. You just can’t win with New York fans. Some fans are just fair weather, band wagon fans who don’t understand the concept of supporting their team through the good and bad. They have beer bellies and play Sunday softball with their buddies, and think they “know” how to run a professional team, or worse, think they “know” how to play professional ball. Grow up people.

  38. The Glider says:

Phillies score a run in top 8th. Now down to As 3-2.

    • garykeithron says:

      is this on tv?

      • The Glider says:

        Yeah, I live in Philly.

        • garykeithron says:

lol, how’d you end up a mets fan in the midst of phillies country?

        • The Glider says:

I grew up on Long Island and ended in in law school (Temple U.) in Philly. My mom’s side of the family is still here; got a decent job out of law school here; and really didn’t want to live on Long Island after living in Boston and Philly the prior 8 years.

          But I still love NY!!

        • garykeithron says:

do you go to baseball games in philly? ouch. must be fun to be a mets fan at that stadium

        • freubr01 says:

i live in philly also…what part you in?

        • The Glider says:

It got so crazy there towards the end of last year and we’ve been on our heels lately, I’m not going there right now. But when we’re up and the Phillies are down, man, it is a lot of fun. Mets fans from NJ take over the joint.

          Right now, not so much.

        • The Glider says:

          Northern Liberties.

        • freubr01 says:

i can remember seeing the mets and phils at the vet back in the mid 90s when they both stunk…75% mets fans, at least…phillies fans are pathetic, all my buddies never even watched baseball, but they made sure to rag on me after last year and now they all go to every game and get drunk and heckle the pitchers warming up in the pen all night

        • freubr01 says:

cool i live near pats and genos

        • The Glider says:

          Oooooooooooo, Geeeennnnnnosssss.

        • garykeithron says:

haha, ya, we NJans are a little too embarrassed to go to Philly right now… :(

        • freubr01 says:

haha, i was worried moving here that i’d eat myself into a heart attack but ive kept away pretty well, besides when my buddies come down and all want to go there

        • freubr01 says:

well, if ur a giant fan, where your met jersey and ur g-men hat…thats what i do when i go to the bars, and not a word

        • garykeithron says:

I hope you look big enough to scare off the drunk phillies fans….

        • freubr01 says:

no, im a smaller guy, but i think the fact that all my buddies usually wear some sort of philly stuff, i guess they figure im alright, or they realize im a real fan, we stick out in philly

        • garykeithron says:

well that’s nice of your buddies to let you hang out with them. I hope they don’t try to spill beer on you when the mets are winning, though :) Do Phillies fans spill beer on or heckle female Mets fans? I’m small too, so I could get beaten up pretty easily

        • freubr01 says:

most of my friends are the jerk fans you hear about, and overall they are the worst…i saw a philly fan heckling a 5 year old met fan at a game…and his father almost killed the guy…my brother and i went to a game, and he is a pretty big guy, he isnt fat but he has a little beer gut, and the whole game they were calling him fatso and horrible things…real classy…my brother followed them out to the parking lot, and they ran away since they were half his size

        • freubr01 says:

as for females, i wouldnt know, but i’ll tell you after july 4th when my girlfriend and i go…she wants to wear all the met gear, and i wasnt going to but now i guess i have to or else i’ll look like a wuss to her

        • garykeithron says:

yup, no wussing out! (bring pepper spray)

  39. EV says:

After watching the embarassing way the Mets played against the worst team in baseball, does it really matter if we are 4 or 5 games out against the Phillies?

  40. The Glider says:

I’m going to stay up, watch the Phillies lose, and try and go to bed on a relatively happy note.

  41. The Glider says:

Oakland goes up 5-2, bottom of 8th.

  42. J0eSmiTh says:

well. if there is a silver lining to today

A)good thing we never traded for joe blanton. 10 losses
    B)he’s beating the phillies tonight

    phils down 5-2 bottom 8

so everyone chill out, have a beer, and get ready for tomorrow.

its funny how you guys tear each other apart over this team.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I keep trying to tell them, it’s just sports.

      • The Glider says:

        JUST SPORTS??????? (lol.)

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

That’s right. At the end of the day, if it stops you from enjoying the rest of your life, something is wrong.

      • Prismo says:

I thought you were leaving us for good. ;)

I was going to change my nickname to:
        AlreadyMissAlreadyMissShea

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I’ve left for good two or three times now. I thought about staying away, but most of these guys have suffered enough this season. I’m not gonna punish them any further by going away. That would be too cruel.

  43. J0eSmiTh says:

by the way, an 11-0 loss is just as bad as the 4-3 heartbreaker the braves suffered today.

  44. mistermet says:

I have a homework assignment for you guys. Please go back into the National League Record books, over the last 120 years, and tell me how many other National League teams have carried 3 catchers on their roster for more than 50 games in a season. I was complaining about this last year, and you people told me I was stupid. Does anybody here think this is a smart roster decision? This is an absolute joke, a complete waste of a roster spot- starting with Casanova, and now this piece of tr*sh Robinson Cancel. It’s lunacy, plain and simple. The fact that bonehead Minaya carries a 3rd catcher is bad enough- but the fact that he is carrying a no-talent latino who has had 1 major league hit since 1999 is that much more of an indictment. Please let me know if any of you can find another National League team that has carried 3 catchers on its major league roster for more than 50 games in a season. If you find it, please post your source, thanks.

    • The Glider says:

You may be right, but do you honestly think that that is the reason why we are losing?

    • metsgo says:

the cubs last year lou always has a third capable catcher but last year for the first half he carried 3
By the way the reasoning for this is for interleague play if you want to use castro as the dh and schnider gets hurt there is a third

  45. JoeFruit says:

Once again, this loss means basically nothing, as the Phillies just lost for the 6th straight time and the Mets are only 4 games behind. BIG WHOOP. What it is about stupid NY’ers that they panic at the drop of a hat? Colorado was in the World Series and is now 14 under .500. 2007 ALCS runner-up Cleveland is 7 under. The Mets are only 2 under. RELAX. Give Jerry & Co. time to work it out. This is no time to panic.

    • The Glider says:

I agree. In the immortal words of Hubie Brown: “Plenty of time, plenty of time.” But we can’t stand pat. Omar’s got to make some moves by the trading deadline.

      • als102 says:

Thank you finally the sensible people are here. I know were playing like crap, but cmon people 4 games out the nl east is not that strong at all. everyone lost in the division today. Philly is tanking it. We get some bats in that line up we will come out of this.

    • metsgo says:

colorado also had 3- 6 game winning sreaks and 2-5 game steaks before the went on there ride they were consistant they just kept losing on the road in the 9th inning

  46. The Glider says:

I like this Huston Street for Oakland. He looks tough. Kind of reminds me of Roger McDowell’s wind-up, but he throws in the low 90s (91-94).

    And . . . Phillies lose 5-2!!!!

Ok, make sure to say your prayers before you go to bed. I’m saying mind to Saint Lindsey Nelson and Saint Bob Murphy. I only hope they hear them.

  47. JoeFruit says:

Chase Utley: Last 8 games 1 for 31 with 0 HR.
    Phillies losers of 6 straight.

    • freubr01 says:

oh you mean Christ reincarnate? that cant be…how did howard do tonight? phillies fans have been on him, booing the heck out him

      • JoeFruit says:

Howard is making Delgado look like an All-Star. Down to .220 after tonight’s loss.

        • freubr01 says:

but isnt he still on pace for over 40 dongs and 120 rbis? his BA with RISP is pretty good….oh well

        • JoeFruit says:

True, but Jimmy Rollins is down to .276, is at half his HR pace of 2007, and has scored a paltry 34 runs thus far (Reyes 55).

        • freubr01 says:

i love how people say rollins is the best ss in the east…look at his numbers at reyes’ age…and reyes has so much more range…rollins is solid, but he is in his prime so his numbers should be better…i will give him a pass this year though since he missed about 3 weeks

        • metsftw says:

uh, no. howard >>>>>>>>>>>> delgado. he’s getting extremely unlucky (BABIP of .270, career of .340). i wish we could get howard. but then you retards would complain that he strikes out too much or something equally as dumb.

        • freubr01 says:

i didnt say anything about howard, i was commenting on how shocking it is that phillies fans boo him…he is clutch, as is shown by his high rbis despite the low avg…no need to call people Retards

  48. istillhatemdonaldgrant says:

Too many fans are giving up on this year. So here’s the bright side:

    1. So far the division stinks.

2 Maybe Mets haven’t permanently damaged Church and he picks up where he left off.

    3. Alou comes back, plays 30 or 40 games and rakes.

    4. Pelfrey continues to use his plus fastball and comes into his own.

    5. Pedro gets into a groove.

    6. Santana gets into a groove.

    7. Mets move HoJo to some other spot and get a real hitting coach.

    8. Mets go on a nice winning streak and in 2 or 3 weeks we’re in first.

    YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!

    • SlowRoller86 says:

      1. So far the division stinks.

counting on your competition to fail is a fatally flawed plan to succeed

2 Maybe Mets haven’t permanently damaged Church and he picks up where he left off.

or maybe he goes back to what he has been so far in his careet and his numbers dip a bit

      3. Alou comes back, plays 30 or 40 games and rakes.

Alou is likely done for his career and counting on him to return from injury is another brilliant plan

      4. Pelfrey continues to use his plus fastball and comes into his own.

maybe second time around the league, the batters adjust and he is back to the 5’s in ERA

      5. Pedro gets into a groove.

Pedro continues to get pounded and is back on the DL by the end of July

      6. Santana gets into a groove.

he continues to pitch as he has: not bad, but the record speaks for itself

      7. Mets move HoJo to some other spot and get a real hitting coach.

a new batting coach is never the answer

      8. Mets go on a nice winning streak and in 2 or 3 weeks we’re in first.

they cant string together 2-3 days, expecting a turnaround like that has no basis in fact.

Anybody work on the homework I assigned above?

  50. MetsFan21 says:

Here’s my two cents or four cents if that’s what it should be called:

    1) OIiver Perez should get what Bobby Jones got and Steve Trachsel got: a dose of playing in Triple-A to straighten himself out. If he doesn’t like the idea, he has no choice. Perez has minor league options… if he refuses, trade his candy ___ for prospects and a reliever. I don’t think there is no way he will resign with the Mets and if he is with the Mets past the trading deadline, I still want draft picks coming back regardless where it’s slotted. I believe Perez is a Type-A at the end of the year.

    2) If Heilman is to be traded, I prefer we get a prospect in return. One guy to keep an eye on is OF Colby Rasmus. Not to say the Cardinals would entertain it, but someone of his caliber would be nice.

    3) The price of getting either Joe Blanton or Rich Harden is too much… so is CC Sabathia. You might as well scratch their names off and accept that if this team performs like this, we might as well do something to change the roster up a bit. Best chance is that if Freddy Vargas is healthy, overpay the name if you must. Your rotation is 90% Latin for anyone who wants to bring up that notion: Freddy Vargas, Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, John Maine & Claudio Vargas. If David Wells is out there, as long as he can get ground ball outs, bring him in as the #5 and have Claudio Vargas become the long man in the bullpen with El Duque whenever his 75 year old body allows him to pitch. Should Ollie have his head screwed on well provided he is still with the team, he can rejoin the rotation if Wells isn’t brought on board. Then your top five is: Ollie Perez, Freddy Vargas, Johan Santana, John Maine & Pedro Martinez. Maybe Wells could come in as a spot starter and long man, who knows.

    4) Move Claudio Vargas into the rotation (if he is there already or hasn’t been released) as the #4 or #5… Get Muniz into the bullpen as well as Willie Collazo.

    • MetsFan21 says:

Sorry… I omitted Mike Pelfrey. As long as he pitches the way he is pitching now, even better.

Pelfrey, Santana, Freddy Vargas, Martinez and Maine.

    • JoeFruit says:

Forget Sabathia. Too many good pizza joints in NYC he could not resist.

      • metsftw says:

yeah, because being overweight means you can’t pitch! well, that’s probably true in your case, but it doesn’t mean it applies to everyone.

    • garykeithron says:

sorry, vargas got DFAd. Muniz is up

    • Bench5urvivor says:

no kidding someone like rasmus would be nice

he’s the top prospect remaining in the minors

  51. shiprdr19 says:

Like JoeFruit said above. The Phillies lost tonight. So did the Marlins. So did the Braves. Mets lose no ground. Let’s go out, get ‘em tomorrow, then jump-start our season by taking 3 of 4 against the Yanks!

  52. mistermet says:

Silly Willie should have been gone last year, and all the real Mets fans wondered why he was retained, and why it took so long to fire him this year. But in his interview with Mike and the Mad Dog, Minaya reminded us that “you have to remember that Willie is African American.” And thus his race was the reason for the delay in firing. In the Mets organization, it’s apparent that winning takes a back seat to affirmative action. Definitely not surprising on the team known as “Los Mets!” You’re an idiot, Fred!

    • freubr01 says:

thats the way the world works unfortunately…gotta cover your butts for the lawsuits…even if the employee isn’t earning his paycheck…which, by the way, HE IS STILL GETTING PAID!!! poor willie

  53. shiprdr19 says:

Hey Mistermet, who cares how many catchers we are carrying and how many teams have carried 3 catchers in the past 120 years. Waste your energy on trying to figure out the real reason the Mets are losing. Puhleeeeeeeze.

  54. mistermet says:

    Shipdr19,

The ridiculous/idiotic carrying of a 3rd catcher for 2.5 months is a microcosm of Minaya’s incompetence….It would take me 6 hours to document the totality of his transgressions, failures, mistakes, etc. He should have been fired long ago. But I’m hearing that Tony Bernazard is the air apparent….Los Mets now and forever!

    • shiprdr19 says:

If Bernazard is the heir apparent, we are in trouble. Big time. Listen, I didn’t like the idea of carrying 3 catchers either, but it’s becoming apparent that that’s not the reason this team is losing. There’s about 30,000 reasons this team sucks right now.

      • SlowRoller86 says:

The Mets still have a manager problem, the GENERAL Manager.

Omar’s philosophy has been shown to be weak and vulnerable.

that is to say, signing star players on the back side of the hill (Alou, Pedro, Delgado, Castillo, Santana in his 3rd year with the Mets=$60M) counting on both health and production and get neither.

building around core young players (Reyes, Wright, Maine, Smith, Perez, Church) which is nice, but most teams now possess that quality, giving the Mets no advantage

and then there is the AARP crew (Easley, Tatis, Anderson, Nixon, Duque, and countless other characters)that Omar thought would fill in the gaps, but has really turned into a complete circus.

an then there is the minor league system which is absolutely bankrupt compared to other ML teams.

In need of an outfielder for a three week stint? the Mets have NO MLB talent at AAA and call up a 21 year old from AA, who after getting his bat to collide a few times with a pitched ball, then looked totally overmatched.

this philosophy counted on the health and production from older players and basically have gotten none of it. the youngsters have been very good, but not yet great. OP is a disaster and the BP is inconsistent.

this is a team built for .500 and is roughly performing to its potential.

BTW- willie cashed a check for over $150k this month and will do so for the next 18 months.

Nothing burns Coupon’s rear end like eating a managers salary and seeing that nothing has really changed must have him ready for a coronary

  55. metsftw says:

those scrappy phillies. their heart and grit has led them to…6 straight losses.

    • freubr01 says:

having 3 possible mvps in a row + having the mets collapse=grit

      • metsftw says:

their “grit” caused the mets to collapse? alright, buddy.

and having 3 possible mvp’s in a row = combination of media hype and…TALENT.

        • freubr01 says:

first of all “buddy” my point is, they aren’t “gritty” they just flat out have talent, having 3 players who could all win an mvp consecutively, along with the mets collapsing, is what people claim as “grit” when it is just talent and good fortune…i dont understand posters who get all angry with other posters, we’re all mets fans, no need to get snippy

  56. metsfan1 says:

I have been done with this team for weeks but to me, as bad as the Willie firing was, this is the low point. The absolute worst team comes to Shea and outscores you 18-1 in the first 2 games. This after a winning road trip. Talk of change is in the air. It is time to either look to see if an AL team would want Delgado down the stretch or cut him. The Mets have 2 minor leaguers that can play first. We should take a look. Castillo, Reyes and Wright aren’t going anywhere. Neither is Schneider and Church. I would seriously look to see if anyone would take Beltran. He is talented but not a leader. He has 3 year I believe on his contract and a no-trade clause but in the right situation, I could see him wanting out. I would look to see if there are takers for Pedro and maybe even Wagner. This team plays to the level of its competition. That is why they are around .500 There will be no stretch drive watching the Mets win 20 of 30. They need to be something like 20 games over .500 to just get to 90 wins. That isn’t going to happen. Dump players and salary, and build through the draft. That will free up money for free agency this winter while giving minor leaguers a look for a few months before determining who to target in the off season.

    • shiprdr19 says:

wow. i agree with getting rid of delgado, but you can’t really be serious about getting rid of beltran. he’s a very talented player. makes center field look effortless. gets it done with the bat every year (2006’s final at-bat aside…) i love how beltran continues to get criticized yet wright is wearing a bullet-proof vest.

    • grmetsfan says:

Getting rid of Beltran is not the solution. Your an Idiot.

We simply need to cut Delgado and see what Carp gives us at 1st. Or even try A. Reyes at 2nd, how much worse than Castillo can he be?

  57. metsgo says:

sell sell sell sell smart ,sell old for ,young ,sell and wait for next year

  58. metsgo says:

wright is becoming a jeter like presence without winng anything

  59. freubr01 says:

yeah but DWright was voted one of the top overrated players in that players poll…i dont agree but there are some people who think dw is overrated…i like beltran, but even if we wanted to trade, nobody will pay him 17 mil a year

    • metsftw says:

shows how much the players know (or don’t know) about their own sport.

      • freubr01 says:

thats probably also the NY bias, since everyone is jealous of ny players and fans because we are the mecca of the sports world

    • Midtown says:

You know who else was on that list? A-Rod.

      Conversation over.

  60. metsftw says:

oh wow now wright is getting criticized. if i were a free agent, i would never want to play in a new york, a city full of people who know next to nothing about the sports they claim to love.

    • Jmiles says:

Yes I would want to work my whole career to get to be a free agent then sign with kansas City or maybe Chicago? yes they are so kind in Chicago. The fans would never give someone a hard time there-now would they?

  61. metsgo says:

    the dodgers will

  62. playmaker3128 says:

Well at least manuel acknowledges changes need to be made. Something willie didn’t do. He’d just run the same lineup out there everyday, i can only hope manuel delivers on that promise.

Quite frankly though, i understand where still only four games out of first place. However how long do we have to keep this charade going before we actually play with some consistancy. The phillies aren’t going to stay cold forever. What happens when they get hot again? We’ll be right back to 7 games out. the standing aren’t worrying me right now, its this team. They have played like this for 2 and a half months now, up and down, up and down, and give no indication their going to come out of it.

Changes that need to be made? How about taking castillo the hell out of the 2 hole. Yeah he has a decent obp, but his avg is down to 250. Plus unlike a lot of other 2 hitters in baseball with high obp, he has no pop whatsoever and kills rallies. Not to mention his defense has struggled as well.

Delgado. Again had a few good weeks. Back down to 230 now. Something has to be possibly done with him as well. Although if we get church and maybe another hitter via trade i wouldn’t mind him staying as idk what better options their are.

Is it me or does our offense play alot worse with castillo in the lineup? Seriously i know omar is probably thinking it was a mistake to give this guy 4 years, but if omar wants to keep his job and wants this team to start winning, he’s going to have to make some changes. If he can’t see what us fans see (that some of these guys are playing horrible) then he needs to go right now.

  63. Metshead1974 says:

What a loose and fun loving clubhouse atomsphere they have now under Manuel! Boy, move over Miller Huggins, make way for the Gantsta Manuel. He has all the solutions to all the problems. Let’s trade Tony Armas for Mark Texeiria. Dopes…

  64. Adam_Jones says:

At least everyone in the NL East lost last night. Another wasted opportunity to pick up ground, but at least we didn’t lose any. At some point we’ll need to win some games.

    • patrick says:

At some point we will need to win games.

      WHAT A HYPOTHESIS!!!

Soon if you rush that one to the lab, you could turn it into a practicing theory, in fact, I think you could skip directly to a law of mathematics.

  65. Agees Catch says:

Kind of reminds me of 1962. We drafted aging veterans off of teams that didn’t need them. 5 years younger, the team would have probably been good enough to win a pennant, Some of those guys had been that good

Give me Delgado, Castillo, Alou & Pedro from 2003, and we’d be running away with the pennant.

The point is that a team on the plus side of 32-33 is going to have a short shelf life and will show signs of decline

  66. patrick says:

Hey Jerry, you go Girl. Ladies on the bus.

  67. mr.gee21 says:

I heard a rumor that a fan was talking about a trade for Bay last night.

  68. andyncmetfan says:

Can you imagine getting paid $16 million to suck? What a life Carlost Delgattago! (Props to whoever made that up – I read it yesterday thought it was great) He sucks, and laughs about it. He needs to be released. Bring up Carp – get Mike Jacobs back. Anyone who thinks Beltran should be traded is retarded. D-Wright is slumping and making errors. He was benched yesterday to clear his head. He was not benched to “freshen up.” Props to Manuel. Pray for a healthy Church. Not from a selfish, he’s the difference maker standpoint because he isn’t, but from a human being standpoint. Some people don’t seem to get that serious concussions could be career enders. Let’s think about the person not the player. And get Barry Bonds for leftfield for the rest of the year. It can’t hurt. Thanks for letting me vent. “Looks like we’ll be doing a little more venting!”

  69. The Glider says:

“Ok, you know what I mean? Ok.”

  70. garykeithron says:

you know, that would help with communication. Everyone could speak in Spanish and there would be fewer misunderstandings. I mean, who needs Wright or Wagner or Maine or Pelfrey…. (wait, maybe you can make a special exception clause for pitchers)

  71. garykeithron says:

    Ok…OK…OK…okay?…ok….Ok…okay?

did you listen to that spliced audio? awesome

  72. freubr01 says:

i do feel for omar in that he seems to have grown up a met fan, and to be failing and having other fans call for your head cuz you cant hack your dreamjob, that sucks

  73. garykeithron says:

ya and him fighting back tears at the press conference for willie.

btw, the fans who stay up late are a lot nicer than some of the ones during the game…some of them are kind of scary

  74. freubr01 says:

i wouldnt know, havent been on the site long, im sure everyone has already wasted all their energy yelling and being miserable during the game

  75. garykeithron says:

i wrote something asking people to stop saying willie would have done this or wouldn’t have done that since it’s sort of moot at this point, etc. and someone replied kind of nastily, but the site removed his post, thankfully.

  76. freubr01 says:

well why would you argue with a fellow met fan…i think met fans are the best..you have to have character to be a met fan, its like Dem Bums from the early part of the 20th century, with the evil empire stealing all the glory, we toil in anonymity and undergo the pain of being losers…thank god im a Giants fan or else I’d be utterly miserable right now

  77. garykeithron says:

I’m a Giant fan too! Yup, basking in their glory is keeping us afloat!

why argue? It’s the winning cures all syndrome, and since we’re not, everyone’s bickering like kids.

  78. freubr01 says:

yeah i guess, it is just nice to hear from people on the same side since basically all my friends are philly fans, i feel like i have to talk down to them…yes i am a sports snob, but trust me, if you hung around philly fans u’d understand….their biggest sports idol is a fictional character

  79. patrick says:

Hey grammar critic, go IT something for your boss.

  80. patrick says:

    Sphincter says what?

    BUY AN EXTRA CONSONANT!

  81. patrick says:

Oooh. You called me son, I am petrified.

  82. patrick says:

We go nowhere, that is to say me with you, other than the fact that you will stalk every post I make on here for the remainder of my time here, that much seems obvious.

    You missed the y dunce.

  83. Adam_Jones says:

No-No, young lady. You are the fair God-Mother.

  84. patrick says:

    Continuing to prove my point.
