News: Hank Wants Willie Back

June 25, 2008 at 12:45 pm · 95 comments

by Mike Nichols

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports Yankees Vice President Hank Steinbrenner would welcome former Mets manager Willie Randolph back with the team if Randolph is looking for a new job.

Steinbrenner, who did not comment on which position would be available for Randolph, holds no grudge against the former Yankees second baseman for leaving the organization for their cross-town rival, as quoted by Puma…

“If he had left to take over the Red Sox maybe I would have had a problem with that. He’s a Yankee. He’ll always be a Yankee. Even the Mets never completely accepted him because they thought he was a Yankee.”

…hank has said a lot of stupid things in his short tenure as the “new boss” of the Yankees, but he is spot on with his comments about some not accepting willie as a Met…

…i’ve never held it against players/managers who have crisscrossed between the two boroughs, including willie…if willie wants a job with the yanks or any other club, for that matter, so be it…good luck, willie…

Coolpapabell June 25, 2008 at 12:49 pm

If he does take on a job with teh Yanks, does he forfeit his 3.5 this year and next?

I thought he would be right back with the Yanks.

Que Sera Sera, now lets please get at least one frigging game over .500?!

Really Carl Pavano June 25, 2008 at 1:52 pm

I’m a lawyer so yeah I know once again how this here stuff works

If william goes back with the yanks in 08 he loses all the money

If he goes back in 09 he loses 1.324 million

In 010 he loses 799 thosand

And so forth

radiopam June 25, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Oh that Hank!! He’s just too much isn’t he?

Coolpapabell June 25, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Oh and if he thinks they will hire him in the near future as a manager he is sadly mistaken

John The Mets Fan June 25, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Its really sad and pathetic that Hank feels like he has to try and stick it to Mets and their fans. Talk about a blowhard, just like his dad. Well, at least his dad built something from nothing. Lets see how Hank does with the keys to his dad’s mercedes…

whenslydale June 25, 2008 at 1:36 pm

what the hell is Hank talking about
“we never accepted him because he was a yankee”?

we s-canned Bud Harrelson for less.

dave27 June 25, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Spot on? This guys is a major league baseball owner…this is more of the same.

Seriously, the Yankees are like Big II, where a 13-year old becomes and adult, and takes the millions he made from his Toy Advertising campaigns in the first movie and buys the New York Yankees.

He’s a complete idiot…just say you’d be interested in hiring him back. The commentary about the Red sox and Mets is typically undignified.

AzMetsFan June 25, 2008 at 1:33 pm

there was a Big II? That movie with Tom hanks?

CharlieH June 25, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Hey, it worked for Yogi back in ‘75, so why not…?

gbaked June 25, 2008 at 12:57 pm

“If he had left to take over the Red Sox maybe I would have had a problem with that.”

Johnny Damon loved that comment.

MajorLeagueSarcasm June 25, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Just like he loves his paycheck.

shea_guevara June 25, 2008 at 1:02 pm

I love how Hank is now the arbiter of all things ‘Yankee’. And thanks for telling Mets fans who they did and did not accept.

Classic example of a guy born on third who thinks he hit a triple.

theperfectgame June 25, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Well put.

beltran the warrior June 25, 2008 at 1:05 pm

he didn’t tell us anything. if you read metsblog, people were bitching about that very point from the word go.

Borat (Formerly '09) June 25, 2008 at 1:20 pm

This is true. But by that rationale, Beltran is a Royal. Yuck.

In my opinion ,Beltran is as much of a Royal as this suit is black pause not.

Tidewater June 25, 2008 at 1:27 pm

The “pause not,” was funny in the movie, not funny the first time on Metsblog, and getting older by the second.

Borat (Formerly '09) June 25, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I agree with you not.

Think of it as my response to the endless fire willie posts.

EliPorter June 25, 2008 at 1:07 pm

i hope he goes to the braves

LongJohnMaine June 25, 2008 at 1:11 pm

While I certainly didn’t like Willie’s Yankee background when he was hired, the real reason I didn’t like him was because he was a terrible, terrible manager, to put it mildly.

That being said, you can have him Hank!!

chew13 June 25, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Exactly let me also add stubborn, nieve, and this sense of entitlement that trickled down to the players.

cver June 25, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Maybe Willie will join the Braves “think tank” or join the Yanks in some capacity in time to have him be named as an AL coach for the All Star Game. It’s better if he goes back to the Yankees where he belonged all along and in nearly all circumstances, whatever team secrets he has, won’t affect us. Thanks for 06 though, Willie!

JefJarrett June 25, 2008 at 1:29 pm

I know what you mean, but lol…..”team secrets”…….what might those be.

Delgado can’t turn on a fastball anymore….

Ollie Perez is nuts…..just don’t swing and he’ll walk/hit you and then start making crap up and tossing meatballs over the plate.

Hit it to Castillo’s right or left cause hobbles can’t get to it.

Thee Bruce Dickenson June 25, 2008 at 1:16 pm

As messed up as this guy is, if he had to fire Willie he would do it in a classier way than the Wilpons did.

Mets Fan on Wall St. June 25, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Would this be before or after Willie gets an ultimatum to win or not return right before an elimination game in the playoffs?

LongJohnMaine June 25, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Yea, maybe he’d fire Willie the same way George fired Yogi Berra in the 1980’s. The Steinbrenners, what a classy bunch they are.

Borat (Formerly '09) June 25, 2008 at 1:22 pm

They are a classy bunch. They have made the playoffs every year since 1995. I’m so sick of them. I really hope they don’t make the playoffs this year. Then Hank will go on a spending spree and guess what Yanks fans. All that money that you say is coming off the books after this year….will be piled right back on to the tune of $300MM.

I hope the yankees make the playoffsnot.

MajorLeagueSarcasm June 25, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Got it. Let’s go Braves… not.

chew13 June 25, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Just like he did Joe Torre, right? Even worse the guy smeared him after they fired him. Know the facts next time.

Borat (Formerly '09) June 25, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Willie liked talking about his days with the Yanks, that’s for sure. People forget that he grew up a Mets fan. To me, that is special. Sure, he only got one year to play with the Mets, but growing up as a fan, to have that team accept you after so many teams passed on you for their managerial opening has got to be special. I think Willie will look favorably upon these years. I know I will. I think he helped bring the Mets back to relevance and I couldn’t thank him enough for that.

That being said, I think he is a Yankee pause not. I think he is NOT a Yankee. I think he is a yankeenot.

mavicario June 25, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Please stop with the “pause not”, it’s really not funny.
Not even a little bit.

RetireNumber17 June 25, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I think it is a little bit pause not.

Willie ain’t gangsta’!

als102 June 25, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Honestly who gives a bleep about Willie now. He’s not my manager anymore. Nice guy nothing personal but im over Willie and have been for awhile.

Knuckles99 June 25, 2008 at 1:33 pm

exactly.

NY Cuban June 25, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Even I’m over Willie.

Lets just hope Jerry can turn this sinking ship around.

jamie June 25, 2008 at 2:58 pm

let’s hope he keeps the sinking ship afloat, then turns it around.

Adam_Jones June 25, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Agreed. However, Willie ain’t any of our managers, unless the players are wasting their time reading this blog and judging by their play lately they might be doing just that. My manager is in the next office across from me, his name ain’t Willie! Or Jerry!

Knuckles99 June 25, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Don’t worry, he/she probably knows you are blogging at work. Internet access, and everything under, is completely trackable.

Really Carl Pavano June 25, 2008 at 1:54 pm

To be warned that is wrong

mavicario June 25, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I’m not gonna be over how bad Willie was until his garbage lineup is gone.

ness589 June 25, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Just so you all, Randolph would not make his salary with the Yankees in addition to what the Mets paid him to buy him out. Whatever the Yankees pay him, the Mets pay the rest to equal the rest of his buyout.

So if the Yankees paid him $1M, the Mets would have to pay $1M.

als102 June 25, 2008 at 1:33 pm

IM only concerned with the crap were putting on the field now

MajorLeagueSarcasm June 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Can we please refer to crap as fertilizer?

Gasface77 June 25, 2008 at 1:43 pm

…and the key word being CRAP.

gameball June 25, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Crap’s not ready yet. He should get a full year at Binghamton.

the_other_matt June 25, 2008 at 1:35 pm

It’s funny how Hank the, and most Yankees fans, seem to have selective memory when it comes to remembering who were the integral parts of their last 4 WS: Cone, Straw, Gooden, Torre, Mazzilli….Ex-Mets. Yes Hank. Ex-METS. I don’t heart Hank.

CharlieH June 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm

The Steinbrenner family has had an ex-Met fetish from day 1.

One of George’s first major acquisitions after he bought the team in ‘73 was Ron Swoboda, f’r chrissakes.

haplo June 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Even the Mets never completely accepted him because they thought he was a Yankee.”

Yeah, they just gave him his first and only chance to be a major league manager – something the Yankees would never, ever have done.

MetLifer June 25, 2008 at 2:38 pm

I think he was referring to Met fans as not accepting Willie because he was a Yankee for so long.

I would have to agree after reading some of the posts on MetsBlog. It just seems a some Met fans have an inferiority complex and find the need to constantly bash the Yanks.

I mean, I do it too with my friends that are Yankee fans but it’s all in good fun. The venom that some posters on MetsBlog spews and the hatred toward Willie is just sickening!

haplo June 25, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Then he should have said that. Mets fans are not “the Mets.”

The Mets as an organization chose to make Willie its on-field leader, and committed millions of dollars to that choice. To say that they never accepted him is beyond absurd.

MetLifer June 25, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Well.. Not all Mets FO was on board with his hiring. It sounded like TonyB was planning his ousting from the begininning.

boozermetsfan June 25, 2008 at 1:47 pm

The Mets Will Win Big Tonight.

metties1 June 25, 2008 at 1:52 pm

I miss Willie.. This team does not suck any less without him

This team needs a serious shakeup

The Glider June 25, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Tell me about it. Willie was never the problem. It’s amazing how many classless Mets fans there are out there as evidenced by the comments on this thread.

Some of these yahoos know nothing about baseball and I bet couldn’t identify 5 alleged boneheaded move Willie made since he became Mets manager.

Ok, Hank maybe does want to take advantage of the Mets mishandling of Willie’s firing and make the Yanks look like good guys. So what? They did it with Doc and Straw and no one seemed to mind then.

Willie should take Hank up on the offer. And I say “good for Willie.” He’s a class guy and good baseball man.

MajorLeagueSarcasm June 25, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Come on everyone. We all know that it is TOTALLY THE MANAGERS FAULT and NOT the GM or Player Fault.

For more on that check out a great article written by my dear friend at majorleaguesarcasm.com

The Glider June 25, 2008 at 2:48 pm

LOL

Ladies on the field, ganstas on the bus.

LongJohnMaine June 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Is that you Willie?

And just for fun: a) messing up a double switch in 2005 vs. Cincinnati b) Making Floyd bunt in Game 7 c) Just generally being a spineless weasel and never getting thrown out of a game to protect his player(s) d) Leaving Heilman to pitch to Mike Jacobs last year and Jacobs hit a GW HR (just one game man) e) Repeatedly hitting useless Castillo in the 2 hole

The Glider June 25, 2008 at 4:13 pm

OOooooooo. You got me good. Ouch. And you think that Manuel the Magnificent isn’t going to make those kinds of mistakes if he’s around here long enough? Do you ever take notice of the mistakes that ALL managers make during the coarse of a season? Oh, that’s right, you know more about baseball than Willie Randolph (who had the benefit of Manuel the Magnificent’s baseball insights throughout – as he sat next to Willie every inning of every game).

Manuel will do no better than Willie with this team.

BTW, you’ve now been nominated the All Nimrod Team (2008).

The Glider June 25, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Oh, wait a second, Nimrod. What’s Manuel The Magnificent’s record since taking over the Mets from Willie?

3-4? I rest my case.

LongJohnMaine June 25, 2008 at 4:31 pm

3-4? You “rest your case” about what exactly? You’re rendering a verdict on Manuel after 7 games? You’re a very open minded person, a real fair guy.

You asked for five managerial blunders Randope committed, and I gave you five. Don’t give me this “you got me good” crap. I called you on your stupid BS.

Did I say I know more about baseball than Randope? No, I didn’t, but I still think he’s a terrible manager. I’m sorry, Willie bleeding hearts like yourself can go root for whatever sucker of a team hires him next, because it’s obvious you are more interested in rooting for this race-card playing idiot of a “manager” than rooting for the New York Mets.

metfan435 June 25, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Off topic, I just read on Yahoo sports that the METS DFA Vargis. This wasn’t the pitching move I was looking for. Not first anyways.

marvelousmarv June 25, 2008 at 2:34 pm

There’s a lot of people here calling Hank an idiot and dismissing the idea that we didn’t accept Willie b/c he’s a Yankee. Since last September, not once, not twice but dozens of different posters have indicated their dismay with Willie and the last point has always been, that he’s always been and always has been a Yankee.

Hank i’m sorry to say is spot on folks!

MetLifer June 25, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Totally 1000% agree!

marvelousmarv June 25, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Seems like everyone has a short (or selective) memory.

MetLifer June 25, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Regarding?

There's Always '09 June 25, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Regardless of whether Hank is right or not, the situation had nothing to do with him. All he needed to do was say “no comment” to the question he was asked. Did you ever hear Fred Wilpon talk about how Darryl or Doc were Mets? Nope. We all talk about Fred Wilpon, but the guy does have a tad more class than Hank Steinbrenner.

So as not to upset mr. mavicario, I will not end this post with “pause not”………………………………………………………………………………………………………..NOT!!!

marvelousmarv June 25, 2008 at 3:54 pm

So What. Have you gone back to see Wilpon’s comments about Doc & Darryl? Pause…not! and lets not get Darryl mixed in there. Before he got to the Yankees with was the Dodgers and the Giants (Sure he’s known more as a Met, but thats irrelevant). Doc was kicked off b/c of his own problems. They were given second & third chances with the Yanks as players. Willie NEVER had that baggage so lets becareful on how we compare people.

Does Fred have more class, sure! No doubt! But what does that have to do w/ anything here. Hank didn’t say anything in accurate. Heck this blog is proof of what he said. If you got the time go back and research the posts that say Willie isn’t a Met b/c of his Yankee background.

marvelousmarv June 25, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Metlifer, my selective memory comment is regarding posters dismissing the idea of giving Willie a hard time b/c he’s a Yankee.

SudAtlanta June 25, 2008 at 2:45 pm

EliPorter, I think Randolph would do a little better if he were the Bravos manager because our media down here is soft and our fan base is in between the MIA and DC as far being rabid. I doubt he’ll come here but it if he does come here and have success I would for sure let all on here know, and send Cerrone ATL colered met caps (with “property of the Braves” stitched on the side) with a mathing “New York Mess” shirt. Yes, I am aware that the Villians lost last night along with everyone else.

SudAtlanta June 25, 2008 at 2:48 pm

I meant matching for mathing, my bad.

jamie June 25, 2008 at 3:04 pm

yikes, trash talking from a 4th place team?

There's Always '09 June 25, 2008 at 3:25 pm

i didn’t get to the trash talking part….i read up to the “colered” part and decided it wasn’t worth my time.

i guess hampton went to atlanta for the school systems too not.

SudAtlanta June 25, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Long sigh. Thanks for the heads up, I think . I was talking on the phone and typing, what’s your excuse? I ask because I see six errors in your post, it’s a blog let it go. This was just a playful jab Mets fans, no need to try and be personal.

There's Always '09 June 25, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Didnt mean for you to take it personally. It was the funniest thing I could come up with regarding a Braves player and fan.

Out of curiosity, what were my errors? Not that I should be taking English lessons from you ;-)

SudAtlanta June 25, 2008 at 7:18 pm

For the record I always see my typos after they’re submitted. I didn’t take it personal but I know some fans act as if they grew up with the team they root for and they would take my joke as a personal offense against them. Your joke was good but ironic because you failed to capitalize your I’s along with Hampton and Atlanta, there should’ve been some sort of punctuation between too and not. This is the first time that I brought grammer/punctuation/sentence structure up when talking sports and it’ll be my last. Do you mind if I refer to your team as the Mezzopolitans or is that to harsh (add smiley face)?

SudAtlanta June 25, 2008 at 8:00 pm

When I say fans act like they grew up with the team I meant that some fans act like they grew up in the same household as the players.

dwright57 June 25, 2008 at 2:53 pm

willie sucks ass…..they can have him

Knuckles99 June 25, 2008 at 2:59 pm

To all us fans who were broken after last year. Forget the collapse, move on, we are a good team, etc. 3 months and 75 games later. Where is the great hope? F Mart?

Johan did a good job of making me believe again. Worth every penny.

NegativeFan June 25, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Good.

Let Willie go back to the Yanks just like Glavine did with the Braves.

Willie is a nice man and a clueless manager, let him go lead a placid, do-nothing existance sitting on Joe Girardi’s banch for the next 20 years

tengobotas June 25, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Kinda like every Mets player at Shea right now…

JsyCtyFan7 June 25, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I believe Willie was welcomed at Shea with open arms. No sense in trying to re-write history. He just wasn’t all that great as a manager.

MetLifer June 25, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Some fans give managers way too much credit when the team is doing good and too much blame when they fail. How can you say he “wasn’t all that great”. Under his helm, the Mets turned 3 consecutive losing seasons (by 20 games under .500 in two of those) into a winning season. Every full season under WIllie, that Mets have been over .500. If you don’t want to give him credit for that, and say it’s because it was the players that did it.. Then you also can’t blame him for the Mets losing, because under the same logic, the players is causing the losing too.

The Glider June 25, 2008 at 4:14 pm

OMG, a Mets fan with common sense!!!!!!

mavicario June 25, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I’ll give Willie full credit for the wins, and now that they’re losing he got full blame. I’m glad he’s gone. I just wish the new manager wouldn’t send out the exact same lineup as Willie did.

NadyFan June 25, 2008 at 6:13 pm

off topic, you guys have got to see this if you’re a baseball fan.

Go to YouTube and on the search field type in “Ballgirl Catch”.

You have to find the video that’s still available. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. If the Mets would give just HALF the effort this BallGirl gave we’d be in first place. Unbelievable.
