Claudio Vargas has been designated for assignment, and will be replaced by RHP Carlos Muniz.
…of the people who pitched last night, i’m not sure vargas is the guy who should be getting sent to the minor leaguers, quite frankly…
Prior to letting up four runs in two innings last night, Vargas had a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings since moving to the bullpen on May 30.
Nevertheless, Muniz did not allow a run in his first five appearances for the Mets this season, but let up four in his final outing on June 2.
…muniz had a bad outing that last time up, otherwise he had been looking pretty good…get him off the Heath Bell Express and just let him settle in…i’d like to see what he’s got…

does vargas have to clear waivers?
Does Perez not have options? I mean, I think it’s pretty clear something’s wrong, whether it’s mental or he’s injured, I would think it would make more sense to send him down than someone who’s actually been useful.
Does Vargas really deserve to be DFA, shouldn’t Perez get sent down if he has options? I know Claudio didn’t pitch that well last night, but overall the guy has been solid, especially after being moved from the rotation to the bullpen. It can’t be easy to go from being a starting pitcher to a longman and he Vargas handled it pretty well. This is another move I honestly don’t understand, why risk losing a quality pitcher, whose pretty versatile. I’m sure Vargas is going to get picked up by some team thats desperate for pitching.
yup. and he probably will after that display.
not that it would have mattered, but did anybody else think that ump was tim donaghy-shady last night?
Its a little odd that Vargas would be DFA and they would consider dropping Perez from the rotation, at the same time. I mean, who rather than Vargas would we want in the rotation? Tony Armas? blech…
Muniz should be a help if Manual is willing to use him as a set up man rather than a mop up man the way Willie tended to use him.
No kidding. I wonder if Ollie is going to be put in the pen as mop up man. Altho, then why would Muniz be up? Can he start? This all makes no sense.
Muniz has been a closer at every level so far. I would assume he could handle 7th and 8th inning set up man use. He could be better at it than Heilman with some regular success.
Perez would have to be a mop up man, like a Sele role. He’ll work on the side with the coaches and not really be available for most games.
I’d give Armas a shot… can he really be much worse?
Maybe – as they say- you catch lightning in a bottle
Im pretty sure vargas has to clear waivers and im afraid someone will pick him up..that said i like muniz..he did well for us when he was up here.
I like Vargas too.
Is his slow delivery annoying someone?
ive NEVER said this cuz i NEVER though it would happen..but if they REALLY are thinking about removing ollie from the pen AND they DFA’d vargas…i wouldnt be surpised if they FINALLY let Heilman start again, since they brought up Muniz…i mean, we basically had ollie’s “replacement” in Vargas and they let him go
And i agree with others here, who else could gonna replace Perez? Tony friggin armas?? There’s nobody really…
hey, pedro is shaky, ollie is shaky (although according to his erratic ways, he’s due for 2 killer outings in a row now), maine cant get thru 6…and even though Big Pelf has been good, he’s still got A LOT to prove…if a way to improve is heilman, so be it
If they were going to try Heilman out as a start wouldn’t it make more sense to send him down and let him get some innings in in triple A rather than just throwing him out there.
no i agree, i dont think they just ognna throw him out there, but maybe they’re gonna start “stretching him out” as soon as today…mabye they’ll do a joba type thing with him too, who knows…there’s other ways besides just sending him down
The timing of all this is quite odd considering the Mets will need
a 6th starter at some point in the next two weeks bc of the DH with the yankees. I would have thought they would use Vargas.
maybe muniz is up until then, then they will have to bring up a spot starter anyway (Armas?). Probably will need him for the tuesday game vs the cards next week.
can someone give me a good reason why MIKE CARP is not in the biggs? hes just batting like .340?

ThIS TEAM IS A JOKE
Do you want one reason, or three for each time you posted this?
Carp is young and he was awful last year. If the Mets want to make sure he’s the real deal in the minors first, I think that’s fine.
Let him feel like a world beater before he gets here. Mike Carp could possibly give you more than Delgado right now, but you just don’t know. And even if he did, he’s not going to turn this season around, so better to nit rush a 21 year old, IMO.
Yeah, he’s hitting .340 in AA. If there’s a savior for this team this year, he’s most assuredly not in the minor leagues right now.
At first I was surprised that they would send down Vargas right after Manuel said that he will be seriously looking into the Perez issue, but I think this might be a chance for Vargas to really get into a rhythm as a starter. If Ollie has 2 more bad starts, I can definately see Vargas come back as a replacement…
This could also be a warm up for him so that we can bring him back when we need a #6 guy during that double header with the yankees.
He will definitely get into a rhythm…in Atlanta or the Bronx or anywhere else they need a starter due to injuries.
Matt- this is the second time you don’t know the waiver/DFA rules…….DFA does not mean being sent to the minors. DFAing somone means they need to clear waivers and then can if the person does, they can send him to the minors (with his approval), trade him, or outright release him.
A player only has options during their first 3 years of major league service. Oliver Perez has no options.
Don’t tell him he doesn’t know how the standings work though.
You cant go by ERA alone with relief appearances. He has allowed 19 baserunners in 13 innings pitched and has been horrible with allowing inheritted runners to score. His ERA with guys on base is 44.50.
Hey that should read 14.50 not 44.50.
i was hoping to wake up and see oliver perez DFA’d. thats too bad, i liked vargas. in his 4 starts, he averaged 6 innings and 3 runs. that isnt spectacular, but its consistent and it will keep a team in the game. im tired of oliver’s jekyll and hyde routine- we’ve seen him shutout the braves and give up 7 runs to a crap giants team in .1 inning. id like to DFA ollie, call up a new starter and then call up figgy to move him to the pen as the long man
mets going with no long-man out of the bullpen again. foolish.
Heilman, unlike Willie, Jerry doesn’t use him in tight spots.
he hasn’t pitched more than 2 innings in 4 years. his arm is hardly stretched out. he also need to return to 7th or 8th inning form for this team to have a chance at the nl east.
What;s the problem? Their starters consistently pitch into the 8th, right?
In the immortal words of Scooby Doo, “Ruh Roh!”…
Agreed, especially if they just lose him.
What ashame, I did like Vargas. He shouldn’t of been the one to get DFA’d today.
This is a terrible move. Vargas is a valuable asset. If you want to think about who might claim him, look no further than across town, as the Yanks are reduced to starting Sidney Ponson on Friday night.
We probably need an extra starter next week, which probably foreshadows a start for Armas and possibly the long-man spot afterwards. Warthen was with him all year, so moves are going to start reflecting his advice and input.
Muniz has really been terrible in some of his auditions though, and this move is puzzling. I get wanting a fresh arm, but not at the expense of losing Vargas from the organization.
Omar is grasping at straws. There are high priced dead wood players that he’s afraid to bench, cut, etc. Claudio Vargas isn’t the problem!!
Can someone give me a real reason why Vargas was sent. I dont get this teams moves they make no sense everyday they do something that makes no sense. Can someone explain to me the bigger picture here cause i dont get it. Really Vargas was the problem i must have missed it since I turned it off at 10-0.
I have a homework assignment for you guys. Please go back into the National League Record books, over the last 120 years, and tell me how many other National League teams have carried 3 catchers on their roster for more than 50 games in a season. I was complaining about this last year, and you people told me I was stupid. Does anybody here think this is a smart roster decision? This is an absolute joke, a complete waste of a roster spot- starting with Casanova, and now this piece of tr*sh Robinson Cancel. It’s lunacy, plain and simple. The fact that bonehead Minaya carries a 3rd catcher is bad enough- but the fact that he is carrying a no-talent latino who has had 1 major league hit since 1999 is that much more of an indictment. Please let me know if any of you can find another National League team that has carried 3 catchers on its major league roster for more than 50 games in a season. If you find it, please post your source, thanks.
DFA/Option Perez to AAA and call up Tony Armas.
Of course Boras will have a fit that Perez gets demoted. If I’m Omar, I tell him to fornicate himself. He robbed them in arbitration and he’s god-awful this year. He has no right to complain about his idiot client getting demoted.
I wonder is a Freddy Garcia signing is on the way now. I’m still not sure about his timetable to return to pitching, but Perez out and Garcia in could make some sense.
But all in all, Vargas didn’t need to be DFAd. He was worth keeping around.
I wonder if his agent/him told the Mets that they signed with them to be a starter and that is what he would like to do and have a chance at.
amen! every time i watched this vargas guy pitch i broke out in a cold sweat and suffered from steve trachsel flashbacks when runners reached base… good riddance!
does anyone have any explanation at all for this?
because DFAing vargas strikes me as absolutely idiotic.
it makes as much sense – or less – as having brought up Nunez earlier in the season. I’m waiting for another move to be made soon to make this move make sense…but not holding my breath
My wild guess is that Muniz is only here to be in the bullpen for tonight, then he gets optioned out for Armas (or some other minor league starter) to pitch in the DH on Friday.
