Note: Manuel Concerned about Oliver Perez
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 25, 2008 8:23 am

In a loss to the Mariners last night, Oliver Perez let up six runs, seven hits and a walk in five innings pitched.

Perez has allowed three runs or less in eight of his 16 starts, meaning he has allowed four runs or more in the other eight.

In his last four starts, he allowed five, four, one and one respectively.

…and that’s the problem…for a team desperately trying to get over .500 and put together a winning streak, it’s difficult to do it with a guy who is so back and forth…and not only he is all over the road from start to start, he’s all over the road from inning to inning, and batter to batter

…Mike Nichols sent me a text message during the game last night saying, ‘Perez is the new Steve Trachsel,’ but, frankly, i don’t think that’s being very fair to trachsel…

Following last night’s game, asked whether Perez will be dropped from the rotation, Jerry Maunel said:

“I’m definitely concerned about his struggles.  We’re going to have to address it at some time.  There will be some serious discussions about him and he will be a part of it…I don’t want to really get that far into it.  In order for us to compete and do what we need to do, we’ve got to have better. Period.”

so, i’m wondering if this means the Mets may seriously consider demoting perez…i’ll believe it when i see it…though, it may not be a bad idea at this point…the question is, who will replace him in the starting rotation…any ideas…any one…Aaron Heilman, what do you think of the situation

  1. nomoredelgado says:

trachsel was mediocre but steady. perez is just enraging.

    • Knuckles99 says:

That was a brutal loss. Back breaking. No offense. No pitching. Suspect defense.

  2. Dirtysanchez says:

Nothing will happen with perez as far as demoting imo. If anything they will move his spot in the order down to 3 or something but perez isnt going anywhere this year unless he is traded…and i doubt that senario as well. Just hope the new pitching coach can “fix em in 10 min”

  3. Andrew says:

I don’t see how Perez and Steve Trachsel are alike in any way. As far as I can tell, they’re as different as two pitchers can be. So Mr. Nichols will have to explain that one to me.

Maybe the time has come to explore Aaron Heilman in the rotation again, eh? Ain’t no one says Johan Santana has too few pitches, and he throws the same pitches Heilman does.

  4. Prismo says:

Trachsel gave up around 4 runs/7 innings every start. Gave the team a chance to win almost every time he was on the mound.

Perez gives the team a great shot to win half the time, but a lousy shot the other half.

One of those two scenarios breed mediocrity much more than the other… (surprisingly, it’s the less mediocre one)

    • Nate W. says:

actually that is statistically wrong, but I dont think it matters much…

The pitcher who is up and down will end up with a better record because sometimes his offense will outscore his bad outing. And he wont lose wins because his good outings will be very good.

      • Prismo says:

        Actually, you’re statistically wrong!

Perez this year: 5-5; 5.29 era
Trachsel in his final year with the Mets: 15-8; 4.97 era

ERAs are comparable, but look who has the significanly better W-L record…

        • Andrew says:

Well, you have to look at the run support, too. The Mets scored a lot of runs that year, particularly for Trachsel, but are hardly scoring any runs this year.

        • Gina says:

Perez is like 7th in the NL in run support.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

prisimo the year isnt over yet bud

        • Andrew says:

          I just did the math.

          Mets for Perez, 2008: 4.94 runs/game
          Mets for Trachsel, 2006: 5.5 runs/game.

And that’s counting the first game Perez pitched, when they won 13-0.

The really interesting thing is WHEN they score runs for Perez. They score a lot when he pitches well, and few when he doesn’t.

          To wit:
-In Perez’s 5 wins, he has given up a total of 6 runs.
-When Perez gives up 3 runs or fewer, the team averages 5.75 runs/game.
-When Perez gives up over 3 runs, the team averages 4.13 runs/game.

Which says to me that he disheartens them.

          Which is bad.

        • garykeithron says:

when he pitches well, the team knows he’s liable to give up a ton of runs (in the 5th inning), so they keep trying hard to score more to add a cushion. But when he pitches badly, they know it’s going to be really bad, so they lay down and die.

        • Nate W. says:

          no actually I’m correct…

there are articles and mathematicall derisions to prove it. But lets let one example be the deciding factor…

        • OrangEandBlue says:

Nate W., you come out looking like an idiot from this response. Please save yourself in the future.

        • Andrew says:

Nate W, if you want to actually prove that point, linking to such an article would be of great help to you.

        • Gina says:

I was wrong. According to ESPN Perez is 2nd in the NL in run support. But it’s calculated similar to how ERA is. So it’s probably skewed by some of his ridiculously short outings.

  5. Nate W. says:

after Thursday’s off day the Mets play 18 games in 17 days starting with the double header. If Perez is being pushed back a few days or skipped for a turn, they will have to find another starter to use in his place. And will have to play shorthanded as Perez will not be a reliever of any usefulness…

I guess Armas Jr would be the logical (read: only) choice to take his spot.

  6. NY Cuban says:

    Forget Perez…

I can’t take this much more…I can’t take watching Delgado, Castillo, and even Wright anymore.

    I want a lineup of
    1B – Bugs Bunny
    2B – Bugs Bunny
    3B – Bugs Bunny… you get the idea…

There isn’t even anyone on the bench worth using. Cancel? Easley? Anderson? These aren’t everyday players. Where is Mike Carp? How is A-Hern doing these days?…he has to be better than Castillo. Why not bring A-Hern up and send Cancel down? Pascucci? SOMEBODY…S.O.S…S.O.S

  7. VelvetFoot says:

Peterson had him working a little better, for a while anyway.

  8. I am so sad right now I cannot even be sarcastic.

  9. shiprdr19 says:

What could it possibly hurt to give Heilman a chance to start? I want to see it. As for the as*-clown Brian Runge, he better be suspended and fined. What a joke.

  10. Adam_Jones says:

If Jerry is so concerned about gangsters, Delgado needs an extended benching. Delgado is not a G. Mike Carp is a G. Call up Fernando Martinez now, he’s playing in double A, he may not be hitting, he can’t be worse than the tools we are fielding now. Shea Stadium is a giant toolbox with these clowns in there day in and day out.

    • Andrew says:

F-Mart just came back from an injury like two days ago, and hasn’t ever hit extremely well in the minors. He still needs at least another full season in the minors before he can be brought up.

    • Hubie says:

Lets call up Martinez after a hamstring injury and only 100 abs in AA this year. He should not even be an option for next year. Let the kid grow up first.

  11. Hubie says:

I would prefer Carp not be rushed, but I guess it can’t hurt to give him a cup of coffee and see how he does. Delgado can hit an opposite field bomb one day and look so bad the next few days. The guy has had such a great career, bu they may to cut bait. Any pitcher that can hit the inside corner with a fb get him out.

On Heilman, he looked very good throwing the slider the other night. I’ve never been a Heiman fan, but would love to see him in the rotation. I don’t want Ollie back and Heilman would be a decent option as a starter behind Johan, Maine and Pelf next year. I would not trade him for Fuentes. Our bulpen is good enough, its the line-up and starting pitching that are the inconsistent problems.

Castillo looks bad right now. A shame they cut Gotay for his glove and Castillo has ben subpar in the field. Porlbem is there is no option on the farm.

    • garykeithron says:

too bad we can’t trade castillo for gotay

      • There's Always '09 says:

castillo’s spot in the lineup is a black hole.

        • There's Always '09 says:

If Castillo was “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince”, his symbol would be “o”….a symbol for a corn hole.

      • SheaVendor says:

Gotay sux!! Why the fixation on this guy?

        • garykeithron says:

he’d just be better than castillo. plays with a lot more effort and has speed

        • NY Cuban says:

Cuz Castillo sucks just as bad…only he’s older, breaking down, more expensive and we are stuck with him for 4 more years.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Does gotay start for the braves…….I mean from the way people talk about him he must be a starter because he’s just that good. sorry to take a page outta ya book majorleaguesarcasm.

        • garykeithron says:

it’s all relative. relative to castillo, he’s good

  12. rogasm says:

Cerrone, why are you so infatuated with Heilman starting? I still don’t get why people want that! He had ONE good game as a SP, that’s it!

    • Hubie says:

Its that that people are obsessed with it, its just that it could be a viable option right now. Heilman has good stuff. Its worth a shot given Perez’s struggles.

  13. gowrightgo says:

My frustration in this team goes beyond just Perez’s struggles. It seems we can never get all facets of the team going at the same time. We hit, then can’t pitch. We pitch well, can’t hit. We get good hitting and starting pitching and the defense fails us, We get good starting pitching and hitting and the pen blows up.

To me it smacks of the reality that this group of players can not get it done together.

Tough to expect too much though right now considering we have replacement Lf and RF along with an ineffective 1b, 3b, Ca and an injured 2b.

Bottom line with 25% of the regular lineup out (Church and ALou) and with an additional 50% underperforming due to age (Delgado) fatigue (Wright), injury (Castillo) and poor hitting ability (Schneider), we can’t expect sustained winning.

Further, with an up and down Pedro, a very up and mostly down Perez, a mediocre Maine, a developing Pelfrey and a less than acelike ace in Santana ……the pitching is not dominant enough to expect sustained winning either. No need to get into the pen though it has been pretty good of late (Vargas recent troubles aside)

  14. There's Always '09 says:

On a lighter note, Hankenstein says Willie was and always will be a Yankee. Even the Mets fans realized he was always a Yankee. Everyone that is good is a Yankee. He will forgive Willie for going to the mets. If he went to the Red Sox, we would have a problem. God is a Yankee. The NL is stuck in the 1800’s.

  15. RetireNumber17 says:

Everyone knows you can’t convert a reliever into a starter mid-season.

What’s that you say? Joba? Joba who? I’m sorry, I don’t get your point…

    • Dirtysanchez says:

You are putting joba and heilman in the same league?…..

      • There's Always '09 says:

No. One is in the AL and another is in the NL. :-)

        • And as we all know; “The NL needs to get out of the 1800s and into the 21st Century.”

          God I love Hank.

        • There's Always '09 says:

I love Hankisms. I loved when he was whining about their offense:

We have career .300 hitters that are hitting .200. I mean, it just doesn’t make sense. Our hitting has just got to come along.

Obviously he doesn’t watch many Mets games. I think Giambi is juicing again.

      • Gina says:

But Joba was a starter in their system less than a year ago. Heilman is how many years away from his starting days?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          2 1/2 years roughly….

        • Hubie says:

Why does that matter? He’s a pitcher. Its like a player coming off the bench in hoops and then becoming a starter.

Its a bit of a reach trying this in 2008 as you’d have to send him to NO but he has to be considered an option for the rotation in 2009.

Unless you are getting great value for Heilman, absoloutely silly to trade him right now, his value can’t be that high and I am intrigued to see how he does now that he is finally throwing his slider again.

  16. anditsouttahere says:

i’m glad manuel is honest about perez’s struggles. willie would have said that “he trusts his guys, and they will just need to get in a groove.” its clear manuel doesnt believe in grooves and desires consistency. get rid of perez already!

  17. ugbmets21 says:

can someone give me a good reason why MIKE CARP is not in the biggs? hes just batting like .340?

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      and aparently horrible defense…..

      • There's Always '09 says:

.230 and very horrible defense? Or .340 and apparently horrible defense?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          that is the question…..

        • There's Always '09 says:

no question about it…bring up carp. bring up or trade for a corner outfielder that has a chance of hitting the ball out of the park.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          lol i couldnt resist.
Ok carp has a what .340 avg in the minors right. He is not on the 40 man roster. If i understand this correctly omar would have to purchase his contract and then most likely dfa or demote someone. I dont know the hype behind cancel and keeping him up here. Willie didnt follow the gameplan hopefully jerry will in using castro as a PH.

        • There's Always '09 says:

I just don’t understand how Robinson Cancel keeps getting pinch hit at bats. Is his defense that bad? I think Lord Helmet should get more starts quite honestly.

    • Hubie says:

Carp has been slumping the last 7 days. He’s only 2 for his last 25. The numbers for the year are very good though. His prior struggles and lack of defense are probably holding him back right now.

  18. Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

Last night it wasn’t just a loss to the mariners…. the mariners DEFEATED the mets.

The word defeat should be used also when the mets lose not just when they win……… especially, after last night’s game.

    • There's Always '09 says:

One could argue we use “loss” because the season is a lost cause.

What does anyone think of Jose Guillen or Milton Bradley trade acquisitions? I think Guillen could be had at the all-star break. Right handed pop that we need. Has 13 HR this year. Good defense too.

      • Andrew says:

I agree that Guillen can be had, and would be a good — nay, an excellent — acquisition for the Mets.

  19. reyesnwright says:

I agree it would be very hard to turn Heilman into a starter for this year. However, now that he has a pretty good third pitch in his slider, I wouldn’t mind seeing him work a little more on the slider and be given a shot at a starting role next year. I have never really wanted to see him start until now for a number of reasons; he had always done a good job in the 8th inning and we didn’t have anyone to replace him, we have had decent depth in the starting rotation for the most part, and he only had 2 pitches. Now we have Sanchez for the 8th, we only have 3 reliable starters that are more than likely coming back next year (Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey), and he has 3 pretty good to very good pitches now.

  20. Dirtysanchez says:

Look guys…silver lining..Phils/Marlins/Braves all lost yesterday.
Bottom line i really dont care what manuel or anyone has to say to the media. IMO show me your concerns about ollie by taking action. Do something about it. Like yesterday with the ump baiting beltran. He came out and defended his guy..i like that. We need to see more action less talking period imo. Mets fans arent stupid..we dont need someone to state the obvious…well most of us dont.

    • There's Always '09 says:

Um, what about the Nationals? :-)

      • Don’t count them out. I would not be surprised if they won every game from here out. They have the line-up to do it. I mean don’t they have like 6 guys going to the all-star game?

        • There's Always '09 says:

Yes, and their pitching is second to none. Matt Chico is the next Johan Santana. Is that even a compliment anymore? haha.

That’ll stir the pot a little bit.

        • Andrew says:

          Ryan Zimmerman poops home runs.

  21. VelvetFoot says:

That Marlins fill-in pitcher kept the Mets off balance the entire game. Are there any knuckleballers in the NL?

  22. VelvetFoot says:

ooops, of course I meant Mariners.

  23. ugbmets21 says:

think its the mariners, you should stick your velvet foot on your mouth!

  24. I think I will just go to Binghamton Games… 4 tix, 4 hotdogs, 4 cokes for 24 dollars fifth of captain for about 5 more it’ll be a great time.

Plus they are 8 games over .500

  25. We need to get a roadtrip from New England to Bighamton this summer. Anyone in?

    (no sarcasm)

  26. capitalcitygoofball says:

Enough with Oliver Perez already. It’s time to end this experiment. He has a big league arm and a little league brain. Pitching coaches can’t fix dumb.

  27. Justin4383 says:

As much as Pezez and Co pitched badly yesterday it really doesn’t matter. If he pitched a 1 hit 1 run game for 9 inninngs they still would have lost 1 -0

    • There's Always '09 says:

Tough to say that. Your approach is much different when you’re down 5-0 after 3 innings, as opposed to when you’re down 1-0 after 3. I mean, the Mariners scored 6 runs in the first 5 innings. That’s so deflating.

      • John The Mets Fan says:

That’s why there’s 9 innings in baseball and not 5. Look, in 2006, if the Mets were down 6-0 in the 6th, I believed that they would come back at least make it a game, if not win it. They had that mojo. This year’s team doesnt inspire any confidence whatsoever, and thats being kind. Especially with Ollie on the mound, he’s a real numbskull of a pitcher, I dont think he even contemplated changing his “approach”…..

  28. John The Mets Fan says:

Did someone just write that they would consider Jose Guillen or Milton Bradley trade to the Mets??? Smart move, lets trade for an unstable head-case to a demoralized group of under-achieving ballplayers in the biggest media market in the sport. And what would you trade for those knuckleheads? You’re really willing to gut our already weak farm system even further for mental cases like Bradley or Guillen? Look, going into this season, after the debacle in 2007, there were two options, whether we liked it or not. Either we:

    a) Win the whole thing as we now have the best pitcher in the game, etc, etc OR

    b) Pack it in, assess what we have and rebuild for the future.

It looks more and more likely that we’re having option B shoved down our throats. Having Guillen or Wilson will NOT get this team to the promised land. No offense, but what are you friggin nuts??

    • There's Always '09 says:

Trading for Guillen would hardly “gut” the farm system. It would take one prospect, who in all likelihood will never see the grass on the field at Shea (or Citi).

      • John The Mets Fan says:

LOL. I heard that same argument in the Kazmir for Zambrano trade. And just one prospect is one prospect too many in my book, especially for Guillen. He was brought to KC for the very reason you want him to come to the Mets, to “bring pop to a pop-less line up”, so much its helping the Royals. He’s one tantrum away from ruining any sort of cohesion this team may or may not develop in the near term. Bad news for a team that, needless to say, has plenty of it. And I repeat what I said earlier, none of the two would bring the Mets to the World Series let alone win it. This mentality of “lets trade for this idiot because he COULD bring some pop to the lineup” for prospects is what got us in this mess to begin with. Garbage in…garbage out. Enough already…..

        • Andrew says:

Jose Guillen is hitting .291 with 13 homers and 60 RBI. On the Mets, only Reyes and Church (and Alou, but he doesn’t count) are hitting for better average, and no one has more HR or RBI.

Look at some of the lineups the Mets have fielded lately. Forget headcase this, tantrum that. The guy can hit. The Mets need that. Period. Get it done.

        • John The Mets Fan says:

Great. So Jose Guillen would have scored 12 times last night? Or wait, maybe he could have hit 12 Home Runs to win the game for us yesterday. Or maybe he could have walked alot. Why dont we call up Bobby Bonilla and see if hes in shape? Why not get another headcase to the team.

          Jose Guillen? Lol……seriously. Enough.

        • Andrew says:

What you’re saying here is totally irrelevant. No, of course Jose Guillen would not have gone 145-for-148 last night with 72 home runs and 418 RBI. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t make a positive impact on the lineup. Comparing him to Bobby Bonilla is just stupid and shortsighted.

        • John The Mets Fan says:

Again. This team doesnt need Jose Guillen. It needs a positive addition both in the clubhouse and on the field. He fails miserably in one aspect and has a great chance of failing in the other. Just another “bring this AL player to the NL and he’ll light it up” mistake……Like I said, enough of this mentality.

        • zer09 says:

In all fairness, Guillen has been well behaved the past couple of years, so I don’t think that it’s a problem. And it won’t take “one prospect, who in all likelihood will never see the grass on the field” – that’s just nonsense. I don’t care what the guy’s rep is – if he’s having a great offensive year, there will be plenty of contenders who will want him on the team. He won’t be got for a throw-in. And who knows what impact he can have on the team once you plug him into the batting order – look at Alou, he makes the Mets play like a 1st place team…

  29. metaje says:

please bring niese up and give him a chance….also cut delgado….give carp murphy pascutti and evans jobs….infsion of youth…id rather lose with them and see what we got …cant be worse

    • There's Always '09 says:

Not sure I agree wtih bringing up Niese. I would bring up the kid bats though. Let them try to handle the majors together. If it works out, that’s wonderful. If not, at least you can demote them to AAA and let them develop there.

    • Chiefman says:

      How about this:

      1. DFA Delgado and bring up Carp to replace him every day.
      2. Send down Perez and bring up Armas.
      3. Send down Cancel and bring up Pascuzzi. Two catchers are plenty.
      4. Take a serious look at DFAing Alou. Enough is enough.
      5. Marlon Anderson looks like he has nothing left. If we come up with anybody decent on the waiver wire we should release Marlon.
      6. Take a serious look at making Heilman a starter. What’s there to lose?
      7. See if anybody –ANYBODY– will take Castillo off our hands. I’d rather pay half his salary to watch him play for somebody else than to have him in there for us. I am not an Omar basher, but Castillo for four years was by far his worst move.
      8. Consider bringing up Murphy and Evans later on if we fall eight or more games behind. Get rid of Tatis and Anderson to make room for them.
      9. Leave Niese and FMart where they are. No point bringing them up when they’re just not ready yet.
      10. I’d say fire Hojo as hitting coach, but I don’t have a decent idea of who should replace him.

      • Andrew says:

Alou’s on the DL, it’s not like he’s taking up anyone’s roster spot. No harm, no foul keeping him around.

Castillo’s making little money, so he’s tradeable.

Otherwise I mostly agree, though I don’t really want Tony Armas starting for my team. Rather try Niese. He’s been doing pretty well in AA.

      • zer09 says:

Well, problem #1 is you can’t just send down Perez. He’d have to clear wavers – which he won’t…
Alou is on the DL – why the heck would you DFA him?
Anderson is a guy who can play any position and is a good pinch hitter. i don’t think you’ll find anyone on waivers anywhere close.
Heilman – you lose a great reliever. He’s been groomed as a reliever for a while, it doesn’t look (by all media sources) like the Mets will ever consider converting him back to a starting role.
Castillo – I’ve heard plenty that his contract was a predecessor to Santana agreeing to come to NY. Omar did what he had to do. And who the hell do you think would want this washed up guy anyway?
Hojo -should have been fired along with Willie and Peterson, but wasn’t. You think there’s something more to this? I think you can replace him with pretty much anyone who can toss batting practice – wouldn’t be much worse…

  30. EliPorter says:

right now, the NL East is becoming like the NL west we’ve known for the last 5 years. 4 decent teams vying for the division lead, with no team taking command. thankfully the braves, phils, and marlins all lost keeping the mets only 4 behind. its truly a shame this team couldnt take one of these first two games, but we’re still in striking range and have maine going tonight. yes, we’re frustrating. yes, the wildcard might be out of reach. but as far as im concerned, the division is wide open, and weve gotta step it up.

LETS GO MANUEL- the fans support you.

    • You’re right. This division’s future is uncertain. The Phillies have not run away with a lead and have proven to be streaky because, despite their potent lineup, they have major holes.

The Braves are decimated with injuries so I think their chances are limited.

I really believe we have yet to play our best half of the season. Church will be back soon, Reyes and Beltran are grooving, Santana is a second-halfer, Wright is getting the rest he needs, Pedro is back, Pelfrey seems to have found the switch to his lightbulb and, who knows, we might even get a game or two from Moises Alou.

      Lesgo Mets

After attending the game, I realized I support an over-paid, under acheiving team! If I wanted to support an under-acheiving team, I’d support the Pirates or the Royals! At least their budget is comparable to their record! This team has me scratching my head! What makes the matter worse, the team does not see their lack of heart! WTF?

  32. miker94 says:

a little off subject, but the mets vs. 2 horrible west coast teams this month= S.D. Padres and Seat. Mariners:

0 wins for mets and 6 losses
total of 11 runs for mets and 30 for the other teams
total of 42 hits for the mets and 64 for the other teams

that is absolutely NOT the production and/or lack of production from a playoff team. i’d say there is about a 0% chance the mets make the playoffs. i bet it would be hard for anyone to find a playoff team from the past who put up that string of results against 2 worst teams. probably never happened and never will. can’t wait till 09′

  33. foul bunt strikeout says:

anyone read Beltran’s comments on how he got even angrier after Manuel got bumped and ejected?

Good to see that the players (at least beltran) and the managers got eachother’s back

Lets get a 2007 Maine performance tonight and end this dismal series on a high note

Oh and if you’re at thr game tonight as I was at the monday one and you get heckled by the 2-3 random mariner fans in attendance, just remind them that they are losing their NBA team to Oklahoma City…losers! hahahahaha

    It got them pretty feisty

  34. stickguy says:

to the original question, it looks like Armas is the next guy in line if they need to add a starter for any reason.

I have always been on the start Heilmann bandwagon, so I will support that idea.

Also, Heilmann always had more than 2 pitches. He just didn’t use them all as a short reliever. With the slider, it looks like he dusted one of them off to give hitters a different look. Not sure if he has any others (say a curve ball) in the closet though!

    • Andrew says:

The funny thing is, in MLB 2K5 (obviously not, you know, a canonical source, but still) Heilman has FIVE pitches.

  35. He’s really starting to piss me off. And I love what Cohen said about Ollie costing himself dollars with every bad start. He seriously better not start next Friday in Philadelphia.

  36. RockfordMetsFan says:

Anyone out there feel that it’s time for the Mets to seriously think about rebuilding for the future? There are no quick fixes in their farm system, nor are there likely to be any in the trade market, unless you want to continue to overpay and mortgage the future.

I think the Mets are fooling themselves if they think they have a team that can turn things around this year. They’ve been a middling, .500 team for over a year and are unlikely to make any dramatic turnaround. 2006 and early 2007 was like a bull market when confidence was high and the team was on a roll. However, it’s obviously been a bear market since last June, and it’s time for the Mets to be sellers.

I think that Minaya needs to go back to his original plan of getting younger, and building around Reyes, Wright and Beltran. Unfortunately, there is no “fountain of youth” for these senior adult Mets that will help them recapture their youth. I always keep saying, “I wish that guy was 5/10 years younger.”, about so many on the current roster. It’s time to rebuild.

    • Chiefman says:

I agree it’s time to rebuild and get off this reliance on older guys. Release Delgado, bring up Carp. DFA Alou and replace him with Pascucci. Try to find a buyer who will pay part of Castillo’s salary and jump on it if anyone bites. Send down Perez (if out of options use him as long man). Send Heilman down to become a starter –what’s there to lose. Also, Tatis, Anderson and Cancel are really not helping us so we could also bring up Murphy and Evans to replace two of the. Yes, I know Evans looked overmatched when he was up but the guys in there now are equally overmatched. The only two I’d keep in AA are Niese and FMart because I wouldn’t want to hurt their confidence too much. There’s a similar risk with carp, Murphy and Evans but they appear to be further along.

      • Chiefman says:

I fogot…let’s also release El Duque. Not that it matters since he looks nohwere near ready to pitch.

  37. LIMetfan74 says:

I think they really have to consider trading Perez. Sending him down isnt going to matter. There is no way they are sigining this guy next year and I dont think he wants to come back here after being ripped by both managers the fans hate him and his teammates arent that fond of him. They should try to get something for him.

  38. LIMetfan74 says:

I think they sould also seriously look a Garcia replacing OP.

  39. MetsFan21 says:

OLIVER PEREZ IS THE LEFTY VERSION OF BOBBY JONES

    • Hubie says:

You obviously have no clue. Bobby Jones (Fresno version) was an effective pitcher for 5+ years and actually had very good control. However, once he lost speed on his fastball he was doomed. His breaking stuff also tailed off a lot once he had shoulder problems.

  40. metfan435 says:

Perez has to go. I don’t care where just not here. He has lost his heart and that was apparent not running the bunt out last night. We need to trade him and get whatever we can for him.

  41. patrick says:

Ya know, while we are all demoting Oliver Perez, we could key on the real issue.

No right or left fielder. No firstbasemen.

  42. metfan435 says:

Well hopefully we will have right fielder soon. But you are right definitely no 1B or LF.

  43. MetLifer says:

What does it take to bring up Armas? 2.50 ERA. 88K in 100 innings with a WHIP of 1.01. He’s a veteran.. ONLY 30 BTW.

  44. Joe Bacci says:

FIRE JERRY! FIRE JERRY! FIRE JERRY!

  45. The Glider says:

Perez, IMHO, will get another start or two. If he pitches decently in them, Manuel will keep him in the rotation. If he implodes again, then we need to think about a change. If a change in the rotation is made, I think Vargas deserves a shot since he’s shown that he can pitch effectively for us, or I think Heilman should get his shot at the rotation.

Say what you want about Heilman, and I know there are those of you out there who still have not forgiven him for the Molina HR in ‘06 (just like you never forgave Willie for the collapse). But Heilman does have nasty stuff – a 93-95 mph fast ball with sharp movement; a great change-up, and a decent slider.

  46. repeal the DH says:

i say we just dump this guy and get a few draft picks or a minor leaguer or two to bolster up our system before his contract runs out at the end of the season. this guy is a lost cause who will never fulfill his “potential.” not that he ever had any in my book. adios oliver!

  47. NadyFan says:

off topic, you guys have got to see this if you’re a baseball fan.

Go to YouTube and on the search field type in “Ballgirl Catch”.

You have to find the video that’s still available. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. If the Mets would give just HALF the effort this BallGirl gave we’d be in first place. Unbelievable.
