Note: Thank God for Small Favors
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 25, 2008 10:39 am

The Mets have played .500 baseball since June 9, going 7–7.

However, the Phillies are 3–10 in the same span of games, during which the Mets have been able to pick up 3.5 games in the standings.

And thats why there hope for this season still. IMO phillies will get hot and then go ice cold…Marlins have come down to earth…The braves SP is shot. Im not saying our team does not have problems but its still possible to make up 4 games in the standings over 3 more months of baseball. I still have hope this team can make it..Once they figure out the best configuration to get the best out of everyone we can still take the division.

  2. the Straw says:

Maybe the Mets can win the division with an 81-81 record.

  3. AzMetsFan says:

all we need to do is swap out about 15 of our players for good players and we are there ;(

  4. zen says:

    2008 is the bizarro 2007.

  5. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Did Chase Utley take hitting advice from Carlos Delgado? 1 for his last 29 leads me to believe that he did.

    • mavicario says:

      He’s killing my fantasy team.

      • Hmm what would be the best Fantasy team right now…

        1b Delgado
        2b Castillo
        3b Dwright……

You get the point. Sad part is it hurts me to write Wright down but you have to… my own fantasy team knows that.

        • starz31 says:

your own fantasy team knows that? your team must suck then. Dwright is still top 5 3b in fantasy. Yea let me drop him. some value.

  6. Mookie1986 says:

This is no favor. This is also why the Mets will not be competing for the division title. When your so-called “rivals” take a bit of a detour, that’s when you strike and take advantage of their poor play.

Instead they play .500 ball (big surprise) and gain virtually no ground.

So no. This is no favor to the Mets.

Rather it’s a huge favor to the Phils who should be sending the Mets a Harry & David gift basket for allowing them to stay comfortably in first.

  7. Knuckles99 says:

How about those Mets? Been playing good baseball? No. I understand what the standings say, but they obviously do not measure a good team. This team needs to find out how they can win games.

  8. krumbledkookie says:

    That’s lovely. But guess what?

.500 baseball is not winning this division or getting the wild card.

I’ve officially given up hope. There is no way a team that gets swept by a bad Padres team and best case scenario loses two of three to worst team in baseball, including an 11-0 routing to a team that has scored fewer runs than any other in baseball. We got shut out by R.A. Dickey, whose ERA in previous starts was over 13!

If you all want to keep up hope, that’s great. Honestly, I applaud you. if you think maybe it’s a second-half team, or that Omar can make some move at the deadline to help this team. But I refuse to punish myself further. I’ll continue to watch every game, but my expectations for this group have been abandoned.

    • bhorn19 says:

indeed…i’m not seeing the light at the end of this tunnel.

    • BatteriesForRocker says:

The funniest part of last night’s game was when they were talking about how Dickey shouldn’t be physically able to turn a doorknob, let alone pitch. And then I looked at the score.

  9. toomanyuniforms says:

We went through this last year. Look at the team on the field. Watch the games. Sure, teams surmount four game deficits all the time, but there is absolutely no way THIS team makes up that deficit, leapfrogging two division rivals and holding off the Braves, without the kind of complete transformation that is rarely seen in baseball — doubly so for teams comprising primarily aging backup utility players and woefully inconsistent pitchers. Sure it could happen, and we’ll probably watch, and we can yak about “hope” all we want, but there have to be changes. Real, material, on the ground solutions to give meaning to the “hope.” Why is this sounding familiar??

  10. Hellbelly says:

…..once the Mets fired Willie the Phillies panicked.

    I guess we showed them!

  11. drodro22 says:

playing the worst team in baseball, with your enemies going on a 6 game losing streak, the mets should have capitalized……

IMO, they should trade perez ASAP…..not even cuz he is unpredictable, but because he is a lefty with great stuff who can net you something…….

as far as the platooning castillo, i’ve been harping on that joke of a baseball player for months……..and it is obvious that Jerry feels that Castillo just doesnt add ANYTHING, thus further proving how clueless Willie was comparatively……It is OBVIOUS that castillo is a MAJOR problem with the club…..he turns a double play well, but nothing else, and is a clubhouse cancer, a bad influence on reyes, takes the worst at bats ever, has no power, no average, no speed, no range on defense….NOTHING

  12. BaltimoreMets says:

83 wins has won a World Series before – there is no reason to completely lose hope for the season. It’s very ugly right now, but there 3+ months to go.

It’s still possible the Reyes, Wright, Beltran, and Church can carry the offense and that Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey (things have changed) can carry the rotation. Likely? Perhaps not – but it’s not out of realm of realistic possibility. Long way to go, everyone – a very long way to go.

    • John The Mets Fan says:

Dont take this the wrong way, but Reyes, Wright and Beltran are SUPPOSED to carry the offense. They are the main cogs in the machine if you will. Thats why they’re at the top of the lineup. Up until Monday night, Santana, Maine and Pelfrey HAVE been “carrying the rotation”, but the rest of the team stinks it up. Look at the starting rotation numbers since the Padres sweep, they have an ERA a little over 3.50 since then. The bullpen is erratic to be kind and nobody else even bothers to show any plate discipline. Lets just all stop with the “If so and so can bat .300″ and “If alou stays heatlhy” and “If El Duque’s bunion heals” and “If pedro pitches like he did in 1999″ Enough already….

  13. losmets5 says:

The Mets are lucky the Phillies are sucking up the field as of late. They’ve been playing .500 ball since the Phillies losing streak started. There should be more, considering who they’ve been playing. Whatever, I still believe.

  14. BaysideBillyD says:

Winning a division with an 81-81 record is like being a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind.
Where is it going to get us…. swept in the first round of the playoffs?!?!?!?
This team has some very serious fundamental problems that must be corrected if they are going to make a serious run at a championship, not a one-and-done run at the playoffs (that, afterall, is the Yankees schtick).

    • Gina says:

I agree, but I’m worried the front office won’t.

      • Borat (Formerly '09) says:

It got the Cardinals pretty far in ‘06. We are a much better team than them pause not.

      • dave27 says:

We’re not a better team than the 2006 Cardinals. People forget that before their September swoon they were right with us at the top of the NL…and more importantly that it was essentially the same team that had played in the 2004 World Series and 3 of the past 4 and 4 of the past 6 NLCS.

That team was as much an 83-win fluke as the 2000 Yankees were an 87-win fluke.

As for these Mets? Nothing resembling those pedigrees.

    • BaltimoreMets says:

I hate bad memories, but an 83-win team went through NY to win the WS just 2 years ago. Getting to the playoffs is the goal – it doesn’t matter how it happens.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Well, there’s also that whole “watching the games and enjoying good baseball” thing, but yeah, I wouldn’t mind watching postseason ball either way.

        • EliPorter says:

i dont care about record. we can get to the playoffs with a 75-87 record for all i care. once youre there, anyone can win it all.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Great. So stop watching until the playoffs.

  15. Gina says:

So say at the trade deadline we’re in the same position, under .500 but only a few games back for the division and we’re pretty much in the same pattern of winning 2 losing 3, we’re in now, do you think they try and buy to or sell and try to retool for 09?

    • Tidewater says:

SELL!!!!!! This is the position they were in when they made that Kazmir trade. They were close, but only because everyone else was sputtering. They had no core then and “went for it.” We have a decaying core now. Unless we have really hot month, and I mean REALLY hot, we should cut our losses and not sell what’s left of the farm.

      • Gina says:

I agree, but I’m really started to get worried.

      • wrightstuff08 says:

tidewater i agree with you but , only if we are not out of it at the trade deadline. This offense needs another bat to contend for the NL East title(plus a healthy Church) and the bullpen must gain some consistency every night.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

          *only if we are

        • Gina says:

The point is with the way our division is right now we could be 4 games under .500 and still not be out. Is it still worth it then to try and go for the play-offs, at the detriment of the future, or would it be better to try and sell spare parts that won’t be here next off-season anyway and retool for 09.

        • John The Mets Fan says:

Agree on your first point Gina. We’re not “out of it” and yes the division is weak. But honestly, do we really believe this team has the guts to make a run? They’ve had several opportunities to capitalize lately, and they’re just not getting it done.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

but its june…still have 3 months to figure out a way to capitolize

        • Gina says:

It’s the end of June. They’ve had half a season to try and figure it out. And the point is do we go all in at the deadline if they haven’t figured it out by then or do we go ahead and start trying to retool for next year.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

They would probably try to buy. Waving the white flag on this season will hurt the opening of 2009 in many ways. And it appears that Omar believes that this team is still the 2006 team and should be playing like it.

  16. SheaVendor says:

The problem is, as of now, I don’t see the Mets doing any better than .500. I know there’s still time, but the way they are playing right now, without any major changes, we are in for a long summer.

  17. lmf says:

I know it’s theoretically too early to give up on this season, but realistically, this team isn’t going to win a championship as is. The downside to the Phillies going on a losing streak is that it will cause some to believe that the Mets still can win. I would rather the Mets be sellers going into the trading deadline, dumping as much weight as possible in order to replenish the farm system. Maybe Ollie Perez has some value for a team that wants to rent an arm? Delgado probably doesn’t, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. I’m not a Heilman believer, so if we can get something for him we should (should be worth much more since I think he’s got time left on his contract).

  18. Thank God the Mets never give favors like this to the phillies. I would be devistated.

  19. guierllNO MOta says:

i think weve now learned that when willie said “these are my guys” he didnt mean it in an endearing way, he meant “these are the guys I am stuck with”

  20. Gasface77 says:

Am I the only person that thinks Reyes should be batting second in the order? I understand he is the sparkplug of the offense and what he can do on the base paths, but this team needs run producers. I think Reyes can be a good run producer, RBI guy out of the two hole. Batting in front of Wright with the possibility of a runner on would give him fatter pitches to drive.

Just an idea, but something has to be done. Bat Castillo first since his OBP is decent and he can still run (a little bit). Bat Reyes behind him and move everyone down in the order.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I agree with this too. He is simply too good a hitter to always be hitting with nobody on base. And since he is the best hitter on the team so far this year, might as well put him in a run producing role.

    • jamie says:

I floated this same idea a while ago, acknowleding that willie would never do it. Maybe Jerry would give it a try.

    • SinceSterns says:

If we had another legitimate tablesetter, I wouldn’t mind seeing Reyes hit 6th with Beltran in the 2 hole. I’m pretty sure that Reyes was moved to the 6th spot a few years ago (I think when his OBP. was less than anemic). He tore it up for a short period of time. It was a small sample, but he could be deadly in the 6th hole.

  21. robmenna says:

Anyone interested in going to the Phillies series July 4th weekend?

I have some extra tickets available for the July 4th and 5th games. Do not want to put them on ebay and sell to Phillies fans.

    Contact robmenna2@yahoo.com if interested.

  22. John The Mets Fan says:

The problem with the whole “the Phillies are losing so thats good news for the Mets” concept is that ideally, when the Phillies ARE losing, and when you have a team like the Mariners in a 3 game series AT HOME before a Subway Series weekend, you SHOULD BEAT THE MARINERS BRAINS IN to make some kind of statement and at leat take the series (I was hoping for a sweep), and NOT have your ace give up a Grand Slam to an AL pitcher with TEN major league ABs….and NOT lose 12-2 to knuckleballer who gave up 14 ERs in his last 3 starts. Ideally that SHOULD NOT happen, but whatever. You cant make this stuff up.

And dont look now, but the NL East may be our only hope. The Cards lead the WC race and theyre TWELVE GAMES OVER .500. We cant even get our heads above water. The Mets are 7.5 out of the WC and the Braves are only 1/2 game behind us, and the Marlins are 3 games ahead of us. Even if we DO leapfrog the Marlins, the Brewers are on a tear right now (won 8 of their last 10) and are only 1.5 games behind the Cardinals. The division may be all we have….

    • John The Mets Fan says:

Got my scores mixed up….11-0 for last nights game….but we get the idea. Sorry, a little agitated this am……

  23. washtiger says:

This year so far it’s the National League “Least” — remember 1973 when 82-79 was good enough for first.

    Ya Gotta Believe!

    • patrick says:

Show me Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack and Tug McGraw

then kidnap the corner outfielders, firstbasemen and okay I will believe.

  24. backinbusiness says:

This is my last shred of hope as an optimistic Mets fan…

We (fans and players) need to relax a bit and work on just making up one game here and there, even one game a week. July 4,5,6,7 are Mets v. Phils. If we are 2GB or even 3GB at that point and they win 3 or 4, the entire season changes, and there is still all of July, Aug, Sept to play baseball, including 8 more games against the Phillies.

500 ball is not going to cut it, but we really can feasibly be in first place by the end of next week and then I for one will be ready to Believe again.

    • jamie says:

I was thinking about that yesterday (before the game)…we’ve just got to focus on winning series, take 2 out of 3 every time. bad start, but totally reasonable day-to-day goal. we don’t have to win 10 in a row. I swear, if the philly series ends up with us tied or a game short or over, watch how fast the believers will return.

  25. dave27 says:

I can’t wait until the schedule gives us a break – ie, some good teams these slackers can get up for.

Ever since September, these guys can’t handle bad teams. We’ve lost 3 of 4 to the Nats, been swept in 4 by the Padres, and are now getting manhandled by the Mariners. And we got swept twice by the Braves – who, if it weren’t for playing us, would suck also.

  26. The Mets have played .500 baseball since June 9, going 7–7.
However, the Phillies are 3–10 in the same span of games, during which the Mets have been able to pick up 3.5 games in the standings.

The main point made here is with the Phillies and their dismal 13-game span of going 3-10, while the Mets barely took advantage at all – going 3.5-games up in the standings.

I believe the main focus with metsblog.com writing the preceding is how embarrassing the Mets should be viewed after their effort in creeping towards first-place in the NL East. Furthermore, the Phillies did nothing other than open the door wide open – and kept it open – for the Mets to earn themselves a closer look at first-place.

Nevertheless, the Mets instead lose 2-straight to the worst team in baseball. In addition, I understand that a loss is a loss, however, losing 11-0 on your home field is nothing short of pathetic.

I’ve stressed the word consistency time and time again; the Mets currently have zero consistency, therefore, they look to be playing with zero confidence. Two ingredients that if baked—will make something you should call failure. And, of course the ingredients stink!

    • wang923 says:

The Mets are consistently mediocre. In just about every statistical category they fall middle of the pack in the NL.

  27. wang923 says:

The NL East is on a collective 16 game losing streak. Whoopy!

  28. John The Mets Fan says:

Which makes the series in Philly on July 4th weekend seem even more HUGE. Talk about fireworks. I will be there on the 7th, at which time I hope the Mets will have some shred of dignity left. This could be Custers (ie Minaya’s) last stand of the season….

  29. repeal the DH says:

maybe it’s philly’s turn to choke this year… but how can you possibly lose in that joke of a ballpark? all you have to do is make contact and you can do 20-80-.280 w/o even trying. there are little league parks that are more spacious…

  30. als102 says:

Honestly if this team get two more productive players in the line up they can fix most of there problems oddly the season isnt over. If we go into the series next week with this line up we should just pack it in

    • Gina says:

The question is how do we get two more productive players

And really two more productive players aren’t going to fix an erratic bullpen, or give us 2 more reliable starters.

  31. aus1331 says:

In 2006 the Cards were not as good as people think ,during the regualar season. Here is a break down I looked up on espn.com.

    As of 8/15/06: Mets-71-47 Cards-63-55
    As of 8/31/06: Mets-82-50 Cards-71-61
    As of 9/15/06: Mets-90-56 Cards-78-68
    As of 10/3/06: Mets-97-65 Cards-83-78

We all know what they were like in September, but as you can see the Cards were not even close to the Mets in August too.
IMO, they got hot at the right time that season. Maybe this year Roman Castro will have the BIG hit to put us in the World Series!

  32. sirk says:

thats really scary thats its June 25 and the mets have 39 losses and on 8/15/06 they had 47 losses and this team is almost there and we’re not even in july yet…

  33. Bogar says:

Can’t pick up 3.5 games on this site. Has to be either 3 or 4 losses. We don’t do ‘games’ in the standings, that’s too trite.
