During last night’s game, Carlos Beltran leaned back after the call of a questionable second strike.
The umpire, Brian Runge, removed his mask, walked in front of Beltran, they exchanged words, Runge began cleaning off the plate and so Jerry Manuel rushed out to wiggle between the two men.
Manuel and Runge then began a heated exchange, Runge bumped Manuel and then tossed him from the game.
…of the two, runge is the one who should have been ejected, a) for instigating the fight with beltran, b) showing up the player and c) bumping manuel…what a joke…
Manuel left the field, Beltran than quietly told Runge what he did was ‘weak,’ and so Runge tossed Beltran, who went absolutely wild, pointing and cursing at Runge as players and coaches did their best to keep the two men apart.
…note to umpires, keep your masks on…we don’t care what you look like…you’re job is to officiate the game, not show off for the camera…sad, but true…so, do your job…if a player visually shows you up, eject him…that’s totally fair…if, however, the 50,000 people surrounding you have no idea that your delicate ego has been injured, zip it and just call the game…

Beltran, talking to reporters after the game, said: “After what he did to Jerry, I really got mad, because he bumped Jerry to get an excuse to throw him out of the game. I just let him know that was weak, the move that he did, and he tossed me out of the game…This is the first time that I’ve been so angry in my career…But, I feel I have reason. If I get punished for my actions, he should get punished for his actions also, because that was horrible.”

I have never seen beltran that mad before LOL. The gangsta in him came out of him…of course after the OG manuel said his words. I hope that ump gets suspended for a while..there was no need for what he did. Like matt said just do your job.
Yes! I got you calling Manuel an “OG.” Good job dirty!
why not replace Beltran with Wright in the batting order last night and give him today off so he has 2 days of rest before the 4 game subway series? It would have probably given them a better chance to get back into the game… I’m sure Wright wanted to play… tired or not
…..no one in this organization seems to have common sense
FIRE JERRY FIRE JERRY FIRE JERRY!
i hope thats a joke, i never saw willie get that fired up during his tenure. 1st week and jerry is fired up.
Runge is soooo lucky he didn’t get cut up right there at home plate by either Manuel or Beltran. We’re Gangstas now-doesn’t Runge read the papers?
Brian Runge has a long way to go to be half the umpire his grandfather and father were.
This phuckwad was born with a silver umpire spoon in his mouth, hopefully the MLB drops a bigtime hammer on him,
If a manager as much as brushes up against an umpire, MLB automatically suspends the manager for at least one game.
If an umpire does the exact same thing to a manager….well, it remains to be seen what happens….In my opinion, they better suspend Runge, becasue there was no excuse for his actions - bumping Manuel OR showing up Beltran.
Love the fire from Carlos and Jerry though…..Backing each other up….good to see.
Agree 100%. There might be some hope for this team, Beltran getting ticked off could be just what this club needs. If this doesnt get them going, who knows what will…..
Apparently, it didnt “get them going” cuz they lost 11-0 to R.A Dickey.
I hope Manual (AKA OG) really shuffles up this line-up and pitching staff to show that changes need to be made…. then he “cuts em”
from the way manuel is talking, it looks like delgado will be soon to go, and castillo will find some time on a 30 day DL.
Beltran is also the one player good enough offensively to put this team on his back. If Beltran catches fire in the second half like he did in Houston the year before he signed with us we’d be just fine, even with all our other problems. I know it’s wishful thinking, but he’s done it before so why not?
Maybe this will show everyone that Beltran cares. If stealing 3rd with 1 out and scoring on a ball that got away from the catcher didn’t do the trick.
Don’t know why people on this blog constantly get on him. They are clearly the ones that watch games here and there. Watch him day in and day out. Even if his bat isn’t there, he always brings the glove and a level head. We need more guys like him that just play the game.
I totally agree and I sometimes think the same thing. A lot of the Beltran haters on this site clearly don’t watch every game. If you watch Beltran play on a day to day basis, there is no doubt that the guy is passionate and goes all out on every play. I have never seen Beltran dog it like Delgado. Not to mention, he is in my opinion the best centerfielder in baseball. If anything, his defense is underrated. He is an excellent baserunner and has excellent baseball instincts. I would take a team full of guys like Beltran any day.
Dont tell that to alot of people here. They want to trade him away in june…not realizing that we may need beltran to make a run at this thing. We have all seen what beltran can do when he gets hot. I like beltran and he is the least of my concerns about this team. Great CF, Great baserunner/stealer, Good bat….Definatly one of the core pieces imo
Beltran is no doubt the best centerfielder in either league. Most of the plays he makes where hes running full-tilt would require a diving play by most other player. He’s a freakin gazelle out there - graceful, fast, vegetarian….(just kidding).
Seriously though, I dont want Beltran going anywhere, hes due for one of those months where he hits 13 HR with 32 RBI and scores 25+ runs. Even though this last month he has been on fire also.
What do you mean `09? Everyone on Metsblog LOVES Bel-TRAN. Who doesn’t. Find me one fan who wants to trade him? hmmm i can’t find one!!
The suit is black pause not.
Lmao
Eh, this suit is NOT black.
To me personally , Beltran is ONE OF THE ONLY players on this team right now that I have NO reason to get on for, say, lack of hustling etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc etc. etc. etc.
Thats’s on other players. Beltran is NOT the problem.
If there are suspensions, fines, etc. will MLB make that determination quickly or will we have to wait two or three days?
Well, this whole incident sure didn’t fire up the team at all last night, did it? And by the time the game was over, Carlos B. seemed like his usual self, nary a trace of anger in his manner or voice… I just keep wondering whether or not everybody associated with MLB, not just other MLB teams, thinks the Mets are fair game right now….
Great point debmc. It was just good to see some fire in Beltran last night regardless.
Thats what worried me more than losing to the mariners. The fact that manuel and carlos can get thrown out and the team seemingly was not effected in the least. To me that was very concerning. As somers put it last night “Carlos Beltran is as mild manered as clark kent” and for him to blow up like that…..
Fired up or not, did you notice the lineup we had out there last night? There was no way the team was going to win down 5-0.
Not to mention, one of the guys that got thrown out of the game is the only guy in the lineup that can hit.
We have been playing with a B lineup for a while…Im sure with church back it might make the lineup a little deeper…
honestly the team not playing well was due to RA Dickey. I know, I can’t believe I just said that but his knuckler was everywhere last night. I was in the upper deck and it seemed like every pitch was a nightmare for johjima from up there. If the catcher is having problems, I’m sure the hitters are having just as bad a time.
But not tatis and schnieder…they both went 3-3.
I witnessed the guy throw a complete game shutout in triple A in 2006 when he was in the PCL. Our lineup last night was basically a triple A lineup.
thats why they are profesionals. even though it looks hard to hit the baseball they are supposed to
I highly highly doubt that Beltran or Manuel will be suspended, many comentators including blowhard John Kruk were pointing out what a fool Runge was last night.
I don’t know how many times Randolph got ejected as a Met… maybe 2 times at most. But it looks like Manuel as a Met has already been ejected at least as many times as Randolph. Now that’s funny.
And once was as a bench coach.
so we’re 1-1 in mets getting ‘fired up’ by ejections.
Totally agree. And neither Beltran nor Manuel should be fined or suspended, as far as I’m concerned. Runge should absolutely receive a suspension. As the old adage goes, no one pays for a ticket to see the umpire. Runge made himself the story and instigated the entire confrontation. Good for Jerry and for Beltran. Would have been nice to see the ballclub rally around it and play decently, but umpires who provoke players are an absolute joke.
This whole incident is so pathetic, and just shows how far behind the NFL and NBA that MLB is in things like this. You could watch every NFL game in history and not see an official argue back at a coach or player as regularly happens in baseball, let alone an outrage like last night. When Joey Crawford baited Tim Duncan and ejected him 2 years ago, the NBA immediately suspended him indefinitely and threw him out of the playoffs.
Runge needs like a 10 game suspension—baseball umps have needed to be taught for about 20 years that they are background and wallpaper of the game, not the main event.
Omar had better be busily contacting the league office this morning to get that complete jackass ump suspended and made an example of.
And on another note, the folks praising Beltran are 100% SO right. He is an excellent player, a phenomenal center fielder, a great baserunner, and is on pace for 100 RBI, 100 runs, 40 doubles, and 100 walks. He may not be like he was in 2006 every year, but he is a really, really good player.
without a doubt runge should be suspended…….what he did was almost violent, and for families watching MLB it is unacceptable……if the MLB does nothing, it is showing a lack of family values……..
and yes, that is how you spin it to get this prick suspended ;o)
To go even further with this, yeah he showed up Beltran but he also had a terrible strike zone. When the Mets were pitching he had a small strike zone and when the Marieners were pitching he had a huge strike zone. It was like he had some problem with Mets. It seemed every pitch Dickey threw he was calling a strike before the ball even hit the catcher’s mit. I remember one pitch to Chavez that almost hit the ground and he called a strike. Then Ollie threw a similar pitch that was by far more a strike then the one to Chavez that he called a ball. Absolutely horrible umpiring.
Matt, I am in agreement that the umpire was wrong for his actions, but as least reenact the scenario accordingly. According to your post, Beltran “leaned back” after a questionable second strike. You didn’t mention that Beltran started mouthing off to the umpire. Did you really miss Beltran’s mouth moving to the tune of “15-20″ words? Before the ump baited him. I am in agreement that the umpire baited Beltran, but be fair, Carlos did a little more than “lean back.”
Beltran was right.
Olilie threw that same pitch for a ball repeatedly, and was a strike for dickey.
Umpiring seems to have targeting the Mets for some reason like this lately.
Good for manuel to show some fire. Should be interesting to see how they react tonight.
last night does not matter. After that show of incompetence the umpire did not give mets pitchers anything.
Wow, an entire thread where people here are supporting the player and the manager. Is this a first?
Thank you Runge for being a big enough idiot to make this beautiful moment possible!
if the mets lose tonight…all this did was…nothing…
They better not lose tonight-I’m going to the game
Me too. Hopefully I WON’T regret not taking the advice to sell my tickets.
Mets won’t lose tonight, the gangsters are fired up.
Jerry Manuel will make his stay in NY (as long as it lasts) a memorable one. He has already shown more fire, honesty about the teams problems, and charisma than Willie did during his entire tenure here. He calls a spade a spade and I can appreciate that as a good way to start addressing the team’s problems. I am 100% confident that he is willing to make the changes that need to be made without worrying too much about the vets as Willie failed to do. When did you ever hear of Beltran showing any type of anger at something so vehemently? And it was in defense of “Jerry” as he stated. Think he appreciated Jerry sticking up for him? I think Jerry is winning this team over. Pretty soon we will have a whole gang of gangsters following the “OG”.
P.S. Any more mention of the Bay rumor being mentioned this morning?
I’m glad to see a thread supporting Beltran and Manuel.
Beltran has been there, giving his best EVERY game and now he is producing with his bat. Earlier in the season his defensive contributions were stellar, now he’s got his walks, baserunning, defense and batting on a roll. He is the best CF out there, in my opinion.
As far as Manuel…everything I’ve seen makes me like him more and more. He’s the guy to get this job done.
Last nights loss? I don’t care if the strike zone was fair or not. Dickey had a crazy knuckleball going that would have had most players off balance.
We do need a trade for …but I’ll leave that for another post.
Does the loss really surprise anyone? Seems any new pitcher they face they look lost. Remember Campillo’s start against us- thowing all that junk… That knuckler was all over the place tho and given Ollie’s ineffectiveness I knew it was over after 2 innings.
Runge is a dillweed. MLB should crack down on him along with other crappy umpires like Joe West and CB Bucknor. If he ejected Beltran for saying what he did was weak, then he needs to be reprimanded. If I was Perez, I’d have told Castro to set up low and then throw it high and let it go by and hit Runge.
BTW, on Loudmouths they showed Jeter checking his swing on a pitch at his ankle (the topic was does he rely on his reputation. Answer of course yes). Coincidentally, Runge was the ump and rung him up. The two exchanged words and no surprise Runge took his mask off.
Don’t forget Angel Hernandez.
Worst umpire EVER!
Runge is also the guy who refused to grant the batter time during the Brewers-Twins game, saying he had to “control the pace of the game.” He’s a joke.
DFA Delgado
DFA Cancel
DL Castillo
Bring up Evans LF (already on 40 Man roster)
Bring up Carp 1B
Bring up Val whateverhisnameis from triple A
Activate Church (when Possible)
Put Perez in the bullpen
Let either Figoro have another shot or let heilman have a start.
1. Reyes
2. Beltran
3. Church
4. Wright
5. Carp
6 Easly
7. Evans
8. Schneier
great Idea!!
Evans was 4-23 in his 9 games in the majors and 3 of those hits came in the firts game when they assumed they could just strike him out with fastballs.
Thats the guy I want as my starting LF’er.
Runge’s actions weren’t as bad as Bart Hubbach’s, but they were still pretty bad.
Would things truly change for the better – and would you all be satisfied if the same Metropolitans get swept by the Mariners, and then decide to step things up and either take 3 of 4, or sweeeeep the Yankees???
Thoughts?
If all the other NL East teams continue to lose, then yes, I’d be quite happy at the end of the week.
HoJo really should be the man to blame when it comes to not having this team prepared to hit these unfamiliar pitchers. Why is he still on this team.
Agreed 100%. As much as Hojo is a beloved figure in Mets history for ‘86, he is not the man for this job. He should have went along with Willie and Peterson.
Why do you think he got a free-pass?
Do you believe that since the NY Mets look like a championship-caliber team on paper — than Minaya and Friends issued the freebie to HOJO?
Do we need to look anywhere other than the current series, and what the offense has done lately?
A few-hits here and a few-hits there — everywhere a zero-run zero-run — Ole McHOJO it’s time to goooo.
it’s time for MLB to lower the boom on umpires who bait players. this is something that has gone unpunished for too long and it’s spiraling out of control. an example should be made out of mr. runge by giving him a lengthy suspension. it’s embarrassing to the sport and it’s an abuse of authority which eventually undermines that authority.
frankly this behavior from brian comes as a surprise to me. i don’t recall his dad paul or grandfather ed ever behaving like that. i’m sure one of them, or both, will let brian know that if he wants to be a successful umpire in the majors then he better grow another layer of skin.
If Manuel was truly “Gangsta,” than after clearly getting bumped by the umpire before tens of thousands of Mets Fans — we would’ve seen the umpires face get beat-up by Manuel’s hand.
HA!
I’ll admit I’m a bit of a homer when it comes to these things, but I feel like the Mets have been getting killed by umpires for two or three years now.
Reyes gets killed stealing 2nd. Good for 4 or 5 blown calls a year.
And strike zones are just ridiculous. Runge was terrible. Not that it would have made a difference, the way the game was going, but Ollie was grooving pitches for balls.
The one Carlos and Manuel got tossed on wasn’t really that off the plate, except that he had just called 6 of those balls for Ollie.
Runge sucks. I’d say that MLB needs to do something about umpires who think they are the main attraction, but when’s the last time Selig did anything of value?
off topic, you guys have got to see this if you’re a baseball fan.
Go to YouTube and on the search field type in “Ballgirl Catch”.
You have to find the video that’s still available. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. If the Mets would give just HALF the effort this BallGirl gave we’d be in first place. Unbelievable.
Hmm, I wonder if you’re referring to the same catch and video that my co-worker just sent. That would be rather weird timing huh.
If it’s the same one — I’ve yet to watch — and only heard some comments. It doesn’t sound real from what I’ve heard for a few-reasons. One, none of the team uniforms seem to be visible? Two, why wouldn’t a catch like that be on Sportcenter?? I know it may not be a college or professional team, however, Sportscenter isn’t prejudiced, and they always find stuff like this to show, right?
Lastly, I also heard how the chick doesn’t seem to make anything of the catch – like it was no big deal? I’ve yet to see, so I don’t want to assume, however, what I’ve heard about the catch would make anyone rather excited?? I’ll have to checkout and see with my own eyes.
It can’t be better than D-Wright’s barehanded catch, cmon.
No-Way that is real, no-way. The computer images/skits are definitely off; good try though.
