Note: When Umpires Attack
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 25, 2008 10:17 am

During last night’s game, Carlos Beltran leaned back after the call of a questionable second strike.

The umpire, Brian Runge, removed his mask, walked in front of Beltran, they exchanged words, Runge began cleaning off the plate and so Jerry Manuel rushed out to wiggle between the two men.

Manuel and Runge then began a heated exchange, Runge bumped Manuel and then tossed him from the game.

of the two, runge is the one who should have been ejected, a) for instigating the fight with beltran, b) showing up the player and c) bumping manuel…what a joke

Manuel left the field, Beltran than quietly told Runge what he did was ‘weak,’ and so Runge tossed Beltran, who went absolutely wild, pointing and cursing at Runge as players and coaches did their best to keep the two men apart.

note to umpires, keep your masks on…we don’t care what you look like…you’re job is to officiate the game, not show off for the camera…sad, but true…so, do your job…if a player visually shows you up, eject him…that’s totally fair…if, however, the 50,000 people surrounding you have no idea that your delicate ego has been injured, zip it and just call the game

To watch the entire scenario, click play below:

Beltran, talking to reporters after the game, said: “After what he did to Jerry, I really got mad, because he bumped Jerry to get an excuse to throw him out of the game.  I just let him know that was weak, the move that he did, and he tossed me out of the game…This is the first time that I’ve been so angry in my career…But, I feel I have reason.  If I get punished for my actions, he should get punished for his actions also, because that was horrible.”

I have never seen beltran that mad before LOL. The gangsta in him came out of him…of course after the OG manuel said his words. I hope that ump gets suspended for a while..there was no need for what he did. Like matt said just do your job.

why not replace Beltran with Wright in the batting order last night and give him today off so he has 2 days of rest before the 4 game subway series? It would have probably given them a better chance to get back into the game… I’m sure Wright wanted to play… tired or not

…..no one in this organization seems to have common sense

Runge is soooo lucky he didn’t get cut up right there at home plate by either Manuel or Beltran. We’re Gangstas now-doesn’t Runge read the papers?

Brian Runge has a long way to go to be half the umpire his grandfather and father were.

This phuckwad was born with a silver umpire spoon in his mouth, hopefully the MLB drops a bigtime hammer on him,

If a manager as much as brushes up against an umpire, MLB automatically suspends the manager for at least one game.

If an umpire does the exact same thing to a manager….well, it remains to be seen what happens….In my opinion, they better suspend Runge, becasue there was no excuse for his actions - bumping Manuel OR showing up Beltran.

Love the fire from Carlos and Jerry though…..Backing each other up….good to see.

Agree 100%. There might be some hope for this team, Beltran getting ticked off could be just what this club needs. If this doesnt get them going, who knows what will…..

Apparently, it didnt “get them going” cuz they lost 11-0 to R.A Dickey.

I hope Manual (AKA OG) really shuffles up this line-up and pitching staff to show that changes need to be made…. then he “cuts em”

from the way manuel is talking, it looks like delgado will be soon to go, and castillo will find some time on a 30 day DL.

Beltran is also the one player good enough offensively to put this team on his back. If Beltran catches fire in the second half like he did in Houston the year before he signed with us we’d be just fine, even with all our other problems. I know it’s wishful thinking, but he’s done it before so why not?

Maybe this will show everyone that Beltran cares. If stealing 3rd with 1 out and scoring on a ball that got away from the catcher didn’t do the trick.

Don’t know why people on this blog constantly get on him. They are clearly the ones that watch games here and there. Watch him day in and day out. Even if his bat isn’t there, he always brings the glove and a level head. We need more guys like him that just play the game.

I totally agree and I sometimes think the same thing. A lot of the Beltran haters on this site clearly don’t watch every game. If you watch Beltran play on a day to day basis, there is no doubt that the guy is passionate and goes all out on every play. I have never seen Beltran dog it like Delgado. Not to mention, he is in my opinion the best centerfielder in baseball. If anything, his defense is underrated. He is an excellent baserunner and has excellent baseball instincts. I would take a team full of guys like Beltran any day.

Dont tell that to alot of people here. They want to trade him away in june…not realizing that we may need beltran to make a run at this thing. We have all seen what beltran can do when he gets hot. I like beltran and he is the least of my concerns about this team. Great CF, Great baserunner/stealer, Good bat….Definatly one of the core pieces imo

Beltran is no doubt the best centerfielder in either league. Most of the plays he makes where hes running full-tilt would require a diving play by most other player. He’s a freakin gazelle out there - graceful, fast, vegetarian….(just kidding).

Seriously though, I dont want Beltran going anywhere, hes due for one of those months where he hits 13 HR with 32 RBI and scores 25+ runs. Even though this last month he has been on fire also.

To me personally , Beltran is ONE OF THE ONLY players on this team right now that I have NO reason to get on for, say, lack of hustling etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc etc. etc. etc.
Thats’s on other players. Beltran is NOT the problem.

If there are suspensions, fines, etc. will MLB make that determination quickly or will we have to wait two or three days?

Well, this whole incident sure didn’t fire up the team at all last night, did it? And by the time the game was over, Carlos B. seemed like his usual self, nary a trace of anger in his manner or voice… I just keep wondering whether or not everybody associated with MLB, not just other MLB teams, thinks the Mets are fair game right now….

Great point debmc. It was just good to see some fire in Beltran last night regardless.

Thats what worried me more than losing to the mariners. The fact that manuel and carlos can get thrown out and the team seemingly was not effected in the least. To me that was very concerning. As somers put it last night “Carlos Beltran is as mild manered as clark kent” and for him to blow up like that…..

Fired up or not, did you notice the lineup we had out there last night? There was no way the team was going to win down 5-0.

honestly the team not playing well was due to RA Dickey. I know, I can’t believe I just said that but his knuckler was everywhere last night. I was in the upper deck and it seemed like every pitch was a nightmare for johjima from up there. If the catcher is having problems, I’m sure the hitters are having just as bad a time.

I witnessed the guy throw a complete game shutout in triple A in 2006 when he was in the PCL. Our lineup last night was basically a triple A lineup.

I don’t know how many times Randolph got ejected as a Met… maybe 2 times at most. But it looks like Manuel as a Met has already been ejected at least as many times as Randolph. Now that’s funny.
