Vote: Jerry Manuel Confidence Rating

by Matthew Cerrone on June 25th, 2008 at 9:56 am

As noted in an earlier post, Jerry Manuel had the following to say to reporters after last night’s game:

“We might have some tough decisions to make…We can’t continue play good, don’t play good, and not find a consistent formula…It could mean some tough decisions…Could be lineup changes, could be rotation changes, could be all types of changes.  We have to do what we have to do to get this team on track.  We have such great fans, and they’re just waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting, they’re waiting for us to do well, just hoping we do well and we’re not giving them anything – and that’s not fair to them.”

According to Manuel, he and Omar Minaya have not yet talked about potential trade acquisitions, however he says they soon will, ‘No doubt about that.’

that said, from what i can gather, manuel has met individually, and as a staff, with his coaches and different team executives following each of the last two games

also, from what i understand, manuel and Howard Johnson have been talking about different ways, such as switching up batting practice, changing the lineup, using different drills, practicing situational hitting, etc., that can help improve the team’s offense

…of course, better players would help, too…i mean, last night the Mets were hitless in nine at bats with runners in scoring position, but also had Trot Nixon, Endy Chavez and Fernando Tatis in the starting lineup, while Jose Reyes was the only player in the starting lineup under the age of 30…

much like was the case under Willie Randolph, this roster – and specifically the starting lineup – is a mess

That said, it’s not too early to ask:

Note: Manuel Concerned about Oliver Perez

by Matthew Cerrone on June 25th, 2008 at 8:23 am

In a loss to the Mariners last night, Oliver Perez let up six runs, seven hits and a walk in five innings pitched.

Perez has allowed three runs or less in eight of his 16 starts, meaning he has allowed four runs or more in the other eight.

In his last four starts, he allowed five, four, one and one respectively.

…and that’s the problem…for a team desperately trying to get over .500 and put together a winning streak, it’s difficult to do it with a guy who is so back and forth…and not only he is all over the road from start to start, he’s all over the road from inning to inning, and batter to batter

…Mike Nichols sent me a text message during the game last night saying, ‘Perez is the new Steve Trachsel,’ but, frankly, i don’t think that’s being very fair to trachsel…

Following last night’s game, asked whether Perez will be dropped from the rotation, Jerry Maunel said:

“I’m definitely concerned about his struggles.  We’re going to have to address it at some time.  There will be some serious discussions about him and he will be a part of it…I don’t want to really get that far into it.  In order for us to compete and do what we need to do, we’ve got to have better. Period.”

so, i’m wondering if this means the Mets may seriously consider demoting perez…i’ll believe it when i see it…though, it may not be a bad idea at this point…the question is, who will replace him in the starting rotation…any ideas…any one…Aaron Heilman, what do you think of the situation

News: Muniz Up, Vargas DFAd

by Matthew Cerrone on June 25th, 2008 at 8:11 am

Claudio Vargas has been designated for assignment, and will be replaced by RHP Carlos Muniz.

of the people who pitched last night, i’m not sure vargas is the guy who should be getting sent to the minor leaguers, quite frankly

Prior to letting up four runs in two innings last night, Vargas had a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings since moving to the bullpen on May 30.

Nevertheless, Muniz did not allow a run in his first five appearances for the Mets this season, but let up four in his final outing on June 2.

…muniz had a bad outing that last time up, otherwise he had been looking pretty good…get him off the Heath Bell Express and just let him settle in…i’d like to see what he’s got
