According to Adam Rubin at the Daily News, Tony Armas Jr. could be called up from triple-A New Orleans in order to spot start on Tuesday in St. Louis. After which, Armas could fill-in as a long reliever out of the bullpen.
Rubin also notes that Armas will most likely take Carlos Muniz’s new found spot on the roster.
Armas Jr. is 5-6 with a 2.50 ERA for the Zephyrs, and leads the team in strikeouts with 88.

anyone else have a headache?
Sosa cut.. Vargas up.. Vargas cut.. Muniz up… Muniz down.. Armas up….
good grief. why didn’t they call up armas in the first place? it ALMOST seems that no one knows what they’re doing over in metland…. :)
Because..they ditched Vargas cause they think he sucks..
So they called Muniz up so they have a usable pitcher between now and Tuesday. Otherwise Armas would just sit around collecting dust until then.
makes sense except for the fact that ollie is pitching this weekend and they have no long man
I totally forgot about this guy, what the scouting report? what pitches?
no worries. They’ll send Armas back down for Cancel or Casanova on Wed. Is the person making these moves bored?
He books the flights with his own credit card for frequent flier milers..then he’s going to quit and fly around the world.
“Armas uses a low-90s moving fastball and a sharp-breaking curve to establish what he wants to do with each hitter. He’ll mix in an effective slider, a splitter and a changeup to keep opponents out of balance. His slide step has improved to the point where opposing baserunners no longer take him for granted.” – Wikipedia
Career:
52-65
4.62 ERA
674 K
I wonder if he wrote that himself. maybe his agent.
It’s possible with wikipedia
Wouldn’t he know best about what he throws?
reads like skewing optimistic to me, that’s all. makes him sound better than he is.
…imo
Muniz has options, so you have him for four games over the weekend and then go to Armas and do not lose him on a DFA.
No one is really concerned about the Sosa release are they?
nope, people are just inventing ways to find things to complain about.
It makes perfect sense to release a long man / possible fill in starter who just worked 2 innings of relief and have a potential stopper in the your pen for a few extra days until the next fill in starter is needed.
I guess some people would rather they play short handed until Armas starts…
good point – i didn’t think about the fresh arm thing. however, there’s something to be said for allowing a player to settle in to see what they can do once acclimated
Maybe Mrs. Sosa? If there is one.
Not sure why Vargas didn’t earn the spot start, but whatever. Armas has been down there long enough…now he can reunite with Pedro, the man he was traded for.
I just don’t get what Armas brings to the table that Vargas did not.
He’s older.
Armas is better?
The guy has put up decent numbers, they want to take an assessment of whether his rehab from his arm trouble is such that he can actually contribute at this level, which suddenly gives the Mets some added flexibitly with their pitching.
vargas had Steve Traschel syndrome
how about that vargas just gave up 4 runs on tuesday…he is garbage…if armas has a 2.5 era, why not try him out?
Seriously i hope all met fans arent as dumb as half the people here !!!!
Change people, we need to shake things up !!! and sometimes its just little things like this…
However i do agree with garykeithron….the whole casanova/cancel thing needs to stop !!!
And i hope none are as shortsighted as you.
Vargas gave up 4 runs the other day, but had been fairly effective otherwise.
Armas has a 2.5 ERA – in the minors. His career ERA in the bigs is over 4.5.
That said, I don’t mind giving Armas a shot. We signed him for a reason.
Just keep things in perspective and stop calling people dumb.
Is anyone steering this ship? What is going on?
“Iceberg! Right ahead!”
In 100 inning in the PCL Armas has a 1.00 WHIP and has walked just 20 in those 100 innings.
Could it be that he is just having a AAAA wonder revival, sure, but guys who have been injured have found new ways to pitch before Armas.
The Mets rode a staff with two guys just like that in Al Leiter and Rick Reed.
So it might be a stretch, but it is worth exploring.
Why was Vargas cut? Do we have to pass him through waivers? I thought he was serviceable. I hope we can stash him in Nola for insurance.
Do we have the pieces to get Oswalt?
Stop dreaming
Can Oswalt play left field, right field or first base? And how does he hit?
I think the Mets insist on having 3 catchers because they want to have the option of Castro pinch hitting. He won’t be able to do that if he’s the only catcher left.
In his last 8 starts, 7 times Armas has exeeded a quality start by +1 IP or -1 ER. 4-2 record, 52 K to 9 BB with 40 hits in 53 IP.
Thats a nice role for a starter to be on. Lets see what he can do.
Vargas had a chance he did ok but really was it something to cry about. not really. the moves make sense its just things they have to do for the roster. Honestly are people really crying about Vargas. There are a lot of things to complain about this team Vargas is not one of them.
why not give f-mart a chance in left field later on when he is fully recovered from his hamstring injury? having a young player can spark the team and can be good experience for him before he starts as many scouts expect him to next year. does anyone know if the mets plan to call up f-mart this season?
And if he isn’t ready (which is the case) it can completely destroy his confidence, and be detrimental to the both in both the short and long run. Thats why he isn’t getting a chance.
Nick Evans is more prepared, and how did that go…
Having Castro availible to pinch hit makes sense – he’s probably got the most power of any right-handed bat on the bench right now. The thing is, they haven’t been using him that way…or, at least, Willie didn’t. Several times he sent Casanova or Cancel up as a pinch hitter and held Castro as his back-up catcher. That never made sense. If you want a third catcher to free up your #2 catcher to pinch hit, fine, but if the #3 catcher is just another bat off the bench, there are better bats to be had, even in the Met’s system.
I am so confused. LOL. Does this mean Johan won’t pitch next Thursday in St. Louis but instead Friday nite in Philly?!
