    Appropriate indeed.

  2. theperfectgame says:

Glad to see the ump was fined and suspended too. That went too far.

  3. Berbalerbs says:

I’d say how I really feel about Brian Runge, but I noticed no one curses uncontrollably or makes death threats on this blog, so….

um, he more than likely has a tiny pee-pee, which would explain his actions. Ok, I’m going to go find an R rated site and go buck wild!

  4. debmc says:

Beltran and Manuel should appeal; I think they have a very good chance of having their fines/suspensions overturned.

Runge, on the other hand, was clearly in the wrong, clearly the instigator and clearly acted in a totally unprofessional manner.

    • magic00700magic says:

They have no suspesion, only a fine.

      • debmc says:

Doesn’t change the point of my post — whether it’s a suspension, fine, or suspension/fine (note the “slash” there, denoting either, not to fine pick a point, but since you opened the door…), they should appeal it; clearly Runge was the instigator, and although they both responded, Runge did in fact “bump” Manuel, and did in fact apologize for it later, and he did, in fact, bait Carlos Beltran. If I were Manuel and/or (note the “slash” there, again) Beltran, I would certainly appeal the fine.

        • Gasface77 says:

          Nice…Magic got burned/owned.

        • NickA33 says:

          If you were Manual/Beltran…

That’s impossible, you can’t be both at the same time. Besides, Manual/Beltran doesn’t even exist…

        • nyleetch2 says:

I don’t know if the two of you have a history on this site, but if not, it seemed to me that magic was merely trying clarify a situation where your slash might have suggested that one of Manuel and Beltran got suspended, or at least the possibility that they did. Since there were, in fact, no suspensions given to Manuel and Beltran, I don’t think magic meant any offense, and there wasn’t really any reason to take exception to his clarification of your point.

That said, while the whole thing was instigated by Runge, Manuel and Beltran did allow his baiting to get to them and they reacted. I agree that they shouldn’t have been fined, but that happens (in hockey, if i guy instigates a fight, he gets an extra penalty, but both players get fighting penalties). At any rate, Beltran and Manuel make enough money, that it’s probably not worth their while to appeal. If it was a suspension that would be a different story.

        • bhorn19 says:

you are, in fact, lame. No way MLB lifts and “slash” or lessens the fine, clearly.

        • debmc says:

As it appears the average age and IQ of many of the posters on this thread probably match, there’s no point in continuing.

And name calling really becomes you, bhorn. So proud of yourself you must be. :)

        • bhorn19 says:

just poking fun at your ridiculously worded explanation/rebuttal but thanks Yoda.

      • thingshappen says:

It is really about who is on first and what is on second, and i do-no is playing third. I think?

  5. jamie says:

Heeyyy, sometimes MLB does the right thing.

  6. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Only one game?? where is the justice?

    • mikescud says:

exactly. if a manager or player bumps an umpire, you’re looking at 5 games minimum. More like 10 if there’s any actual force behind it.

1 game for the ump seems light.

      • debmc says:

Yes it does, especially when combined with the fact that Beltran and Manuel were fined, as well. Still, I think the umpire’s suspension, for even one game, was more than many fans expected, and was somewhat surprising, considering that historically, an umpire practically has to shoot a player on the field to suffer any repercussions at all from MLB, lol.

      • thingshappen says:

        Yea very light.

Actually for an ump to go this far it should be a heavy fine and suspension.

Just think of it if there was a tight race, and a close game and that happened?

And because he was the one that got it going that way i see no reason why a player or manager should have any fine.

  7. SuicideWatch says:

Major League Baseball announced today that Umpire Brian Runge has been suspended for one game for his conduct, which included making contact with Manuel, during the incident. Runge’s suspension will be served immediately. Mike Port, Vice President of Umpiring for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

    Statistical question.

for $200K, I give you a guy who hit 28 hrs in 350 ABs last year, avg. of .276, and an OBP of .410 and had 66 rbis. He can play first base, but prefers outfield. Would you take a flier on him over .250 avg 0 hrs in 350 ABs?

      • Knuckles99 says:

Mo. You know who I know. Come on. Just say it. You like those numbers? Correct?

        • Adam_Jones says:

Barry would put this team on his once roided shoulders. None of the haters would be saying a word if he took us to the WS. You idiots that say he was a cheat had no problem cheering for Lo Duca, who was a cheat, or Mota (ok we had a problem with that) or Shownweiss, so why do you have a problem with Barry? He obviously doesn’t do it anymore, as he was tested 300x last year and he still nearly hit 30HRs.

You guys honestly think Delgado was never on the juice or HGH? Please.

        • marvelousmarv says:

Its a truth that a large % of players have juiced. Delgado may have himself. Its so many that you can’t pick and choose anymore who you want to hate so you either accept them all or none of them.

With Bonds you can make an exception! And No Not b/c of race or anything. He has two of the most coveted records in all of sports. Thats a big deal.

        • Adam_Jones says:

Most home runs and most consecutive juicing season? Lol…

      • rogasm says:

        I would.

    • dykstraw II says:

this. let’s get it done. it is INSANE that barry is not already in queens. and why isn’t anyone in the media writing about him?

      • Adam_Jones says:

        It’s called collusion.

        • Knuckles99 says:

I’m just saying, those numbers, the Mets situation, the potential spin we could put on this? Charity? Maybe even like, everyone deserves a second chance?

        • Berbalerbs says:

I have a “spin” the Mets front office can use…

“We’d like to occasionally score runs.”

    • Adam_Jones says:

I’d love Barry Barry. Baseball been barry barry good to me.

      • Knuckles99 says:

Again, I will say this as I have said in other posts, we are media drones. They spin Barry. They spun Willie, asking how could he have a job. We fire him. They spin it like, how can the Mets fire Willie like that. etc.

By the way, Marrion Barry was a Mayor in DC, publicly admitted smoking crack. We voted him in for a second term. What up??!!!

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      No.

  9. UnclePauly says:

    EAT IT WILBON

    • LongJohnMaine says:

      EAT IT WILBON YOU BUM

At least Kornheiser doesn’t really know much about baseball. Wilbon claims to be a huge Cubs fan. What an insanely idiotic rant from Wilbon yesterday.

  10. ravi3 says:

unrelated, but MLB.com made some changes to gameday, and it looks really slick – full 3d views of everything

  11. Knuckles99 says:

MATT?? YOU THERE?? RUN A POLL. I want to know how many Mets fans would support signing a story like this…

For $200K, I give you a guy who hit 28 hrs in 350 ABs, avgeraged .276, had an OBP of .410 and smacked 66rbis, all last year. He can play first base, but prefers outfield and we the money would go to charity. Would you take a flier on him over an Andy Phillips type player who batted .250 avg 0 hrs in 350 ABs?

  12. ness589 says:

Bullplop!!! Runge gets a slap on the wrist. Why are Manuel and Beltran being fined when Runge instigated it?

  13. Don’t look now but the Phillies are losing

    • Adam_Jones says:

I’ve been watching the whole game via gamecast at work… mostly because I’m bored, but also because I really want to pick up a half game going into this weekend. They lost 6 in a row before finally losing, we don’t want them to get on a streak any time soon as we know they’ll get on a winning streak and start hitting when they play us in a four game set. Never fails.

  14. gradeck says:

    Point of clarification:

A suspension is more severe than a fine. Runge loses one game’s salary as a result of the suspension.

Beltran and Manuel’s fines were — in all likelihood — less than what they would’ve lost by being suspended a game.

    • RPsJacket says:

They are down 5-0 now in 9th.

It is truly amazing that our beloved Mets have not been buried by now.

If only they had another LF or 1B – not both, just ONE, plus Church returning they could be in the thick of it by the end of July.

I can’t believe I’m typing this, but any word on Alou? I mean, he strained his calf. You could recover from an amputation in less time.

  15. eddiekrules says:

I kind of look at the suspension of the Ump and only a fine to the players as embarrassing the umpire without really punishing him too much. Now Runge will be under the microscope each time an altercation arises. Perhaps MLB wants him to be so scrutinzied. I am guessing the fines will not hurt Manuel or Beltrans lifestyle significantly, but the suspension of the umpire seems unusual and will grab some attention. And it will certainly raise the eyebrows of the sports media the next time he is involved in something. I say well done MLB.

  16. Wellideclare says:

did i just figure out how to do this…

  17. Wellideclare says:

nice. what’s a URI? I’m not that computer savvy. Just moved to NJ, My dad is a die hard Met fan and he got me hooked. I entered into this season completely optimistic, knew nothing about 2006, so here I’ve been jobless, missing my peeps from FL, with just my crazy family and the Mets. Thanks Dad. thank goodness i got a job today, and thank goodness for the W. Sorry I’m off topic.

  18. Reyes N Wright says:

When Harden is healthy he is one of the nastiest pitchers in baseball

  19. Mr. Mets Butler says:

    What a joke MLB is!

Beltran and Manuel get fined while Runge gets a day off to relax.

  20. iluvbuckner says:

Relax people. Manuel’s fine was $500, Beltran $400. They make that in 1 out…not even. Some of us make that in a week. But I digress.
