By Regis Courtemanche - Jun 26, 2008 6:45 pm

According to BMets.com, outfielder Fernando Martinez has been selected to participate in the All-Star Futures Game on July 13th at Yankee Stadium. Martinez will play for the World Team under Tino Martinez.

As noted previously on Metsblog, the U.S. team will be coached by former Mets manager Davey Johnson.

Martinez is currently playing for the Gulf Coast Mets as he rehabs his right hamstring.

What exactly has Alou-lite done to warrant his selection for the All Star Futures game?

    • HOFMets57 says:

Exactly. These Future Games selections, media notoriety, etc are only getting to this kids’ head. Let him play and PROVE he’s worth attention before thrusting it in his face!

  2. KinersKornerman says:

I don’t like it. Nothing good can come of this exhibition game and the risk of re-injury looms.

  3. MetsFan234 says:

This is cool. Lets hope he doesn’t get hurt during the futures game.

  4. Justin4383 says:

FYI Church in RF so far 2 for 2 with a double

    • garykeithron says:

oh cool! did he DH earlier in the game or field the whole game?

How do you know this – are you watching on the internet?

    • NickA33 says:

Make that 3 for 3, w/ a double 1 Run and 1 RBI….God I hope he’s okay and can play well for us when he comes back. I know nobody saw him being THIS solid for us but we need us some Church!!!!

      • garykeithron says:

well, it is an A-ball pitcher. Is he getting creamed? Or just Church kicking his ass?

problem AND awesome thing with Church is that he plays with the mentality of “Got to get the ball” – no matter what. That means he’ll be more prone to concussions in general. Oh well, we’ll take what we can get

      • BatteriesForRocker says:

I liked the trade when it happened, and thought he’d be a decent player, but I never expected to be praying for him to lift the team. Unfortunately I don’t know if that’s because he’s been good, or the Mets have been atrocious, but i’m willing to compromise and say its a little of both.

  5. metsjam says:

To put Martinez’s potential in perspective, he is raking the ball in his rehab assignment in the GCL league, which doesn’t sound too impressive until you realize that the GCL is the league he should be in based on his age. He’s actually the second youngest outfielder on the team.

  6. EliPorter says:

the yanks-pirates are in a rain delay in the bottom of the 3rd- lets hope this game drags on and we face an exhausted yankees team

  7. garykeithron says:

omg, completely off topic but i had to write it somewhere. Watching a mets-yankees classic on SNY and mccarver just said “Some pitches are not designed to be put in play”

    Thanks Tim

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      Watching same game.
McCarver just commented on a ball down to second and thrown quickly to first:

‘The mind is a great thing if you don’t have to use it’.

Thank God he is not an SNY regular in the booth….

      • garykeithron says:

i guess he knows about that from personal experience :)

As you can see, I’m a fan of the current booth! I once watched a Yankee game and was about to fall asleep hearing Cone and the other guy.

        what a CRAZY game, eh?

  8. dave27 says:

Tino Martinez is managing this game? Against Davey Johnson? Huh? Has he ever managed anywhere, ever?

  9. NYCESQ says:

    In other news:

Ryan Church went 3 for 3 this evening. He hit a double, and had one run scored. He will play for the cyclones tomorrow, and will hopefully join the team on Saturday. He said he felt great physically.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Woo-Hoo !! Church on his way back. Really hope all is well with his health and stays that way – baseball aside.

  10. metfanb says:

does anyone think we should go out for garret atkins. the rockies are asking less for him than for holiday. atkins can play 1B also. we can send over three b prospects and that should do it.

    • -_- they’re gonna trade they’re most consistent hitter for 3 B prospects? get real

      • Tidewater says:

Don’t you know? Teams are always willing to part with their quality to pick up our crap.

      • metfanb says:

look at what we got for johan

        • beltran the warrior says:

we didn’t get anything for johan since johan was traded to the mets.

        • nrmax88 says:

Yeah, and besides all 4 prospects that we traded are better then any prospect we have now besides Fernando. Furthermore, Atkins should warrant a similar bounty since he is cheaper, locked up, and not demanding an absurd extension.

  11. meatloaf says:

Church started in RF and was 3-3. Brad Holt threw 5 hitless innings and struck out 6. Watch your back Ollie! I kid of course but nice to see. Need Church tomorrow!

  12. nova86 says:

for all you people freaking about about fmart playing in this game: in case you didn’t know, jose reyes played in the futures game about 6 years ago and was the MVP, so relax.

    • metsflip says:

ya but how was reyes performing before that?

    • KinersKornerman says:

Nobody is freaking out. We are expressing concern that a guy coming off an injury doesn’t need to show off in an exhibition game. That’s all.

And what does Reyes playing in this game six years ago have anything to do with anything?

      • nova86 says:

“These Future Games selections, media notoriety, etc are only getting to this kids’ head. ”

“Nothing good can come of this exhibition game and the risk of re-injury looms”

reyes was our #1 prospect and used to be injury prone also, and hes turned out just fine…and its one game

        • patrick says:

Reyes was never hurt until he stepped onto the field at Shea, Martinez is at this point a 19 year old Alou that hits like Rey Ordonez, but he is so special

  13. als102 says:

So Church played the field to? Do we get him back tomm. Or does he have to play another game out there

  14. ebfnyc says:

F-Mart isn’t as cool as the name A-Rod.

Every time this guy slumps with strikeouts he will be known as …

    K-Mart.

    …and that cheapens him too.

  15. garykeithron says:

    lol, “two WHAT?”

  16. Prismo says:

My cousin Vinny, is that you?

  17. metsjam says:

    Did you say “Yout”?

  18. ebfnyc says:

this really carl pavano guy is a character.

  19. groterules says:

Pavano… how old are you? Seriously, you write like a 3rd grader… and I’m not talking about spelling. You sentence structure is out of whack… you mix tenses… you mangle cliches…

    And you’re clueless about baseball…

Other than that, you’re OK for a Spankee fan :)
